I didn't find any reviews for Maryland Retina (I always look for reviews when searching new places) so I was skeptical when I found the location listed with my daughter's insurance. We initially had an appointment last week but there was a mix up with my daughter's doctor referral so we had to reschedule. The office staff was very understanding and scheduled a new date very close. On yesterday, my daughter did an initial exam with the technician and she was very sweet and kind. My daughter had her first exam 2 years ago and none since then, because she had no issues with vision. The technician guided her throughout the exam and was very patient. After getting her eyes fully dilated, she saw Dr. Syed. He listened very carefully to my daughter's concerns and his exam was very thorough. He even took a second look to verify his diagnosis of what he suspected may be an issue. The exam wasn't rushed but didn't take very long, either. We will be back in 3 months for a follow-up. -S. I made an appointment for the one annual eye exam covered by my insurance. I knew I likely wasnt getting glasses at Katzen and I didn't think that was secret. The appointment was for the exam. I'm one of many who just can't afford glasses from the optometrist. When I asked - at start of appointment- for my prescription with pupillary distance, I was treated like I was tricking them. "We know what you are going to do with that." Um, I would assume so? Then *after* the exam was complete, they said they would not provide the pupillary distance unless I ordered at least one pair of glasses from them. They also at this point appeared annoyed when I asked for information on changes in my prescription. I drove to the Lutherville Katzen location where I had an eye exam in a previous year. Luckily, the Lutherville staff were professional and answered all of my questions without issue. And for those who like the details: Katzen Reisterstown employee walked me through their pricing. Frame selection was limited and conservative and cost for my lenses and frames would have been $300 for the cheapest frames to $1000 for frames I still didn't want AFTER my puny insurance discount. That price is out of reach for me. I wasnt hiding that and should not be shamed for it. My cost at the local discount place (Optical Center Randallstown) which has a much wider selection of glasses, and with online vendors, is $80 to $180 all in for progressives. Katzen Reisterstown made the case that progressives will be of better quality if made by their office. I didn't have a problem with my previous discount progressives. But even if Katzen's are better, I still can't afford them. If Katzen had said to me when I made the appointment that they won't provide full prescription information to patients who don't buy glasses with them, I would have had my exam elsewhere. Won't be back and just made a family member an appointment to get his eye exam - and glasses - elsewhere.

I came in, perused the selections, and found one I thought looked good on me. I had been in for my eye exam in January, so everything was still valid. The glasses eye exam is done for everyone everytime, so imagine my surprise when I find out that there was NO GLASSES EXAM ON FILE. I had walked in wanting to buy glasses, and now I couldn't because the doctor had not filed them in the system so they could make the order of the right prescription. To top it all off, my sales associate, Joanie, advised that this doctor was also off all week and would be in Friday. She profusely apologized for the inconvenience, and proceeded to honor the coupon and add a very nice discount off due to the inconvenience and for the office dropping the ball. Her customer service with me and being able to offer such a discount for my troubles made the whole situation much better for me, and I left knowing that I would receive a call Friday. So....Friday rolls around and no one calls. I call in and give as much detail about my encounter with Joanie, but they say there are no notes or anything related to what I'm talking about. A bit peeved at this point but managing it. Joanie calls me Saturday and is very attentive to my needs and the lack of follow up that should have happened. She took my payment information over the phone and seemed to be very keen on making sure I was satisfied. The glasses should be here in about 3-4 days. Joanie was absolutely wonderful through all this, and I know the situation was out of her hands initially, and she followed through with me as soon as she was back in the office. Because of her, I will be returning to Eldersburg for exams and eye related purchases. Thank you!
