Absolutely love Central Bark so far. We've brought our puppy to puppy play time twice now and it has been a great experience. The two instructors are very thorough in explaining how things will work, when it's best to separate the puppies if they're playing too rough, and they do an amazing job at separating puppies by temperament into two groups. They're very knowledgeable and have taught us different facts about our pup and exposed our pup to different items and sniff mats. We are so thrilled we found this place so close to home. Absolutely amazing is all I can say. The facility is nice, with indoor and outdoor play areas and plenty of space. However what makes Central Bark is the people. From the owner to the GM to the employees, every single person we have met is outstanding, friendly and great with the pups. More importantly, our dog loves them all. He is a bit skittish around people, but every day he goes to Central Bark, he can't wait to get through the door and jump into the laps of whomever is working the front desk. We actually moved to Fishtown 5 years ago and still commute our pup over to Central Bark a couple of times a week. No place else in Philly compares, and we have tried several. read more

We have been sending our pup there for over a year now and we cannot say enough good things. The staff is professional, friendly, and most importantly clearly love what they do. Oliver almost pulls our arm off the leash he gets so excited when we go and sleeps for days when he comes home because of how much fun he had there. They also have what I think is the earliest drop off for daycare in the city (6:45am), which is great for us for getting to work on time. Couldn't recommend more! read more

Worst experience ever. I will never return to this establishment. Yesterday, I scheduled an appointment for my 5 pounds Shih Tzu (London) to get mini grooming services (Includes bath, nail trim, ear cleaning, blow out, brush out, and a foot, face and sanitary trim). The front desk staff, Ashley, confirmed with the location manager, Kristie, that this service is offered. Kristie confirmed that we can bring London this morning for grooming service. Before dropping off London this morning I called and spoke with the same person (Ashely), to confirmed that mini grooming is offered. I asked if I can get full grooming service to include full body haircut. Ashely said yes, they have groomer on site who can provide this service. When I dropped off London this morning, I confirmed with Ashely that this location in Philadelphia has full grooming service and that full hair cut is included. When I picked up London one hour later, she did not received full haircut, nail trim, or ear cleaning. She just received mediocre bath and blow out. Her tail and paws were still wet. Her face was not trimmed and she has crust in her eyes. She also did not received foot, face or sanitary trim. Ashely stated that your business does not have groomer on staff and that you are looking to hire someone. I asked her why this was not disclosed to me yesterday and this morning. She did not provide an explanation and just apologized. I asked if London received ear cleaning, she said no. Therefore, we took her to the back to clean her ear. Her right ear had a lot of wax in it and it was not fully cleaned after Ashely tried. I do not think that Ashley is a groomer. She just works the front desk. My dog has received grooming services in the past and never had an issue get her nails trimmed. London was also not happy and was clinging to me. I asked to speak with the manager. However, Ashely said that Kristie was off today. I asked if we can call Kristie but Ashley said no that we cannot reach her over the phone and that I will have to call tomorrow morning between 6am-9am. This was an awful experience. I was lied to numerous time and your company did not have the qualified staff to provide the service that I was promised to receive. read more

I would be completely lost without my Central Bark family. My fur baby has been attending Central Bark Philadelphia for 7 1/2 years now. It is truly her home away from home. Anyone can attest that living in South Philly has many advantages, but yard space is not one of them. I work long hours and could not imagine leaving my baby home alone and unsupervised. The staff at Central Bark is absolutely amazing !!! They truly love animals and I feel so comfortable leaving my baby there. She comes home happy, tired and as soon as the alarm goes off the next day, she sits right by the door, tail wagging, ready to go back and play. I will preface this review with saying that the first 2 visits were great for my 5 month old Great Dane. The 3rd daycare visit my boyfriend received a call stating my dog had been scratched in the face by another dog who "did not want to play" and that it had stopped bleeding and they placed ointment on it. When I saw my dog in person after my boyfriend picked him up I was furious because what I saw was not at all lining up with what most likely happened. My dog had two very deep cuts under his eye and it was not at all consistent with a scratch not even from another dog who has as they said had very sharp claws but instead looked very much like puncture wounds from a BITE. I understand as a non first time dog owner that things simply happen when it comes to dogs however I did not appreciate clearly being lied to. The explanation I was given once I called to discuss what happened only further supported my suspicions that my dog was not being watched carefully and was clearly in an environment with either an aggressive dog or a dominant dog. The explanation was that my dog attempted to play with another dog and at that time the other dog exhibited disinterested behavior. He again later approached the dog and per central bark, pawed the other dog in the face first (right because he had to have been the initiator) and the other dog proceeded to paw him back in the face. Let me start by saying my dog is very much like a great dane, goofy and timid in playing with other dogs. Although he is playful he is very cautious at this stage and prefers to play with other puppies who don't jump and play too rough. He goes to the dog park almost everyday and it is the same behavior he exhibits (he's really still afraid of his own shadow). If there ever is a dog that doesn't want to be played with he doesn't even bother (like I said he is still very timid). I most certainly don't believe their story and would have really just appreciated some honesty and owning up on their part and Otherwise would not even being writing this review, even if he had been bitten. I should have gone with my gut when reading other reviews about how their dogs were injured and offered BS explanations. I suggest this establishment get more employees to monitor the dogs and to be trained to intervene when they see another dog exhibiting aggressive or dominant behavior. read more

I called around 7:30pm last night to inform my friends (not really friends, but if they decided I was worthy enough to be called such, I'd jump at the opportunity) at Central Bark and left the following message on their voicemailboxthing: Hi Portia. At first.. I was ecstatic about the doggie day care.. Friendly staff, large facilities.. Etc. Etc. Everything on their website seemed fantastic ! But what I loved the most was the intense detail they put into your dog, meaning assessment sheets and things like incident reports, who they played with and so on. I left my puppy there Memorial Day weekend and she came home a happy pup! Couple of scratches but we didn't think anything of it being we have a pitbull puppy and she's very hyper at times. Plus we loved the owner Portia. We recently left our dog with them on Saturday and retrieved her Sunday morning. When we picked her up and brought her home we noticed her face was extremely scratched up as well as her stomach. We called and called the facility only after numerous phone calls did someone answer. when we told her of the incident she became extremely passive aggressive and told us it was a result of our puppy ramming her face full force into the crate constantly. ?!?!. Complete nonsense. Our dog has been crated outside and at home, with other dogs and never has done that. The owner Portia returned my phone call and was very nice and asked me to email pictures of our dogs face and stomach and we did. Today my girlfriend was returning back their phone call and the husband or other owner answered and became very rude and aggressive telling her she needs to stop going on and on! We just wanted them to acknowledge the fact that maybe something happened while they weren't paying attention to the dogs. We used to love Central Bark for the 1st 7-10 visits. It concerned us when they mentioned Wheaten puppies do not do well at doggy day care? Aren't you trained to handle puppies and all breeds? We have had no issues at other facilities that do not crate the dogs. We now know they are NOT trained to handle wheaten puppies. He's been to 2 doggy training courses & is a loving, friendly, energetic puppy. That said, he nipped one of the staff after moving him from cage to cage---never happened anywhere else. (& we couldnt get an answer to why he was moved from cage to cage but we did notice he was wet every time we picked him up) Central bark asked us to pay for training. Since the 1st issue they had with him "nipping a staff member while moving him from crate to crate" he started coming home smelling like urine and all wet....clearly peeing on himself even though he is 100% housebroken. I feel that a doggy day care should be trained to handle all breads--especially, gentle playful puppy breeds & not expect you to pay for training on-site when they clearly aren't trained to move dogs from cage to cage. We asked them why they move dogs from cage to cage & why is he always wet & covered in pee & poo during overnights---the staff did not answer & were rude after that point. Everything is great until there's an issue....then they are rude and unresponsive to questions. We know its tough to find a place to send your loved ones. However, please look for a place that has better customer service because heaven forbid you have an issue---you will not get any clear answers from this place & you'll be left searching for another home away from home for your pet. There are several friendly doggy day care spots that don't crate your puppy & don't sending them home smelling like pee & feces. read more

So my dog Cocoa (a beagle) has been going to Central Bark for about 4 months now. I have nothing but positive things to say about this daycare for dogs! First, the owners are great, Anthony and Portia are amazing. I work early hours, and they work with me and my schedule. I've been taking my dog to Central Bark since August. We used a great daycare service before moving to Philly and I was nervous about finding something similar. I'm happy to report that Central Bark is fantastic! They have, IMO, the best facilities in the city- lots of space inside as well as scheduled play time outside in an enclosed area. They separate the big and small dogs, which I like as mine is a bit timid with larger dogs. And the staff is AMAZING. They truly care about the dogs. A huge bonus is their boarding service...I travel a lot for work and really appreciate being able to bring my dog somewhere where she knows the people, gets lots of attention, and play time with other dogs. If you live anywhere within the city of Philadelphia and require a boarding place for your dog, then look no further! CENTRAL BARK DOGGY DAY CARE *is* the best dog boarding location in Philadelphia, especially within Center City. My wife and I have a 9.5 years old Pembroke Welsh Corgi and we are very particular and concerned 'parents'. We both had to travel out-of-town for a few days and needed a safe, clean, and loving environment for our dog that was also located near our home in Center City (Philadelphia). I scoured the Internet and sought advice/recommendations from my vet and friends for a boarding location for our corgi. The only dog boarding location that matched our criteria for proximity and 'positive reviews' was CENTRAL BARK DOGGY DAY CARE. Before dropping off our corgi for an extended stay at CENTRAL BARK, my and wife and I wanted to examine their facility and also allow our corgi to acclimate herself at this 'new' location. The proprietors, Portia and Anthony, were very warm, inviting, informative, and accommodating. Portia gave my wife and I a tour of CENTRAL BARK and explained their operations; our corgi already seemed to be comfortable within the expansive facility. We boarded our corgi for a day (Doggy Day Care) to see how she would 'react' to this new locale. Upon retrieving our corgi after a day (Doggy Day Care) at CENTRAL BARK, my wife and I noticed our corgi to be acting 'normal,' a clear indication that our corgi enjoyed her stay at CENTRAL BARK. (When we bring and pickup our corgi from boarding at the vet, she yearns to escape! ~ scratching at the door to leave.) Also, another exceptional and friendly employee at CENTRAL BARK named Aubrey reassured us that our corgi was thoroughly exercised and 'cuddly' throughout her day stay at CENTRAL BARK. Indeed, Aubrey was correct! Our corgi was happy, exhausted, and acting 'normal' upon returning home. Our corgi was obviously treated and cared for well at CENTRAL BARK; we *trusted* and were now certain that CENTRAL BARK would be our boarding choice for our dog from this point on! Fast forward a couple weeks and a couple stays later for our corgi at CENTRAL BARK. My wife and I had to leave town and we were relieved to know that our corgi now had a comfortable and familiar place to stay - 'a home' away from home. In addition, we also knew our corgi would be treated well -- loved and exercised! by the staff (Portia, Anthony, Aubrey, and all the others) at CENTRAL BARK -- so my wife and I had no worries/qualms about leaving our 'child' with CENTRAL BARK. CENTRAL BARK DOGGY DAY CARE *is* the best dog boarding location in Philadelphia, especially within Center City!!! My dog Wrigley loves Central Bark so much. She literally flies through the door with her tail wagging at full force. She comes home pretty tired, but as a puppy she never is tired enough for me! I love that Central Bark posts pictures at lunch. It's fun to play the game: Find my dog. She loves the baby pools and the workers. I have taken her to other doggie day cares, but she seems to love this one the most. I only wish I could afford to take her there more often. read more

So I generally don't give 5-star reviews on Yelp. However, this is the second dog I've had that spent time at Central Bark and it is well worth it. Amber absolutely LOVES IT! When we get there she becomes overly excited. When a handler comes out to take her back she can barely stand up because her butt is wiggling so hard. It blows my mind because it happens every time. Amber visits some other facilities, in Philly, and in other cities... but her reaction to this place is completely different than others. I don't know what goes on back there, but she loves it, and she comes home so tired she then sleeps at least a day and a half. Couldn't ask for much more. read more

This doggy daycare is wonderful! I took my little T here when I used to work down in center city! It is conveniently located near center city for easy drop off and pick up. The staff at Central Bark are all very caring of the dogs they watch and I know Tyson misses his Central Bark family. He would pull me as fast as could to the door in the morning because he couldn't wait to play with all his Central Bark friends! I would recommend this daycare facility to everyone. We've been taking our one and half year old Boxer here since the summer. We had some issues getting her in there initially due to some miscommunication between me and the husband on vaccines needed, but the owner and staff were super nice about it and let us reschedule DeeDee's initial daycare with no hassle at all. That's saying a lot for a business in South Philly. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They even took the time to help me find the right sized collar for DeeDee after we had sized her previous one too big. Our high energy baby boxer comes home worn out and sleeps the entire day after. When we adopted our then 9 week old puppy, Lucy last year we were encouraged to send her to doggy day care to have her socialized since they said she was going to be a handful, and boy were they right! Lucy has been going to Central Bark for a little over a year now and they have been AMAZING! Lucy is certainly not the easiest dog to deal with as she has so much puppy energy (but we love her so much anyway) and CB has been so accommodating with any need or adjustment that needs to be made with her. Lucy runs up their steps every morning and I have to drag her into the car in the afternoon when I pick her up. The care and love for all the dogs they have there is obvious and a special shout out to Jasmine who I hear works really well with Lucy while she is there. We also board Lucy while we are out of town, and they are great with giving you updates on how your dog is doing and it is comforting to know she is with a great group of people who love your dog just as much as you do. My Great Dane just turned 4 which means he's been attending daycare at Central Bark in Philly for 3 and a half years!! Needless to say, we love Central Bark. Portia and Anthony, the owners, are great and their staff equally wonderful - it is clear that everyone there loves dogs and is skilled at what they do. They are always on top of any potential issues and never fail to let us know if there was a problem, even if it's a minor scratch from too much Great Dane rough-housing or a dog seeming more tired than usual. It's especially nice that they have separate indoor and outdoor play spaces for the multiple playgroups - Duke gets to hang out with several other great danes and romp around with large dogs. He practically walks himself in each morning with tail wagging and comes out happy and ready for a calm evening at home. It's been great for us both! I also love being able to see the Facebook photos they post of happy dogs during the day. It's a great home-away-from-home and I trust them with Duke completely. read more

If I could give Central Bark 10 stars, I would. I hVe been taking my rescued Beagle here for about 3 years now. As far as I am concerned they are THE BEST in Dog care available in the city. My Beagle Cocoa is easy going, but she is totally attached to me. Even if I have my own parents watch her (and they will feed her people food), she will cry, whine, and wait at the door waiting for me to pick her up. However, when I drive Cocoa to Central Bark, and we are about 3 blocks away, she starts crying, getting excited, wags her tail, and WANTS to jump outta the car , into Central Bark! She doesn't cling to me, but rather RUNS to the staff, and can't wait to go back into the daycare! If my baby is THAT happy, then I am confident that they care for her as I would. The staff at Central Bark is UNREAL!!!! They absolutely LOVE the dogs, and it shows! Also, they are VERY VERY accommodating, which is super helpful with my crazy work schedule as a nurse. Central Bark is fantastic! We take our dog Frankie there twice a week and she absolutely loves it. Everyone who works there seems to genuinely love the dogs, and when we walk through the door they greet our pup by name. Frankie is always SOOOO happy when we arrive, and she comes home completely tired out. It's the perfect doggy playground. We been taking our Bichon Frise Cosmo to Central Bark since moving to Philadelphia in the summer of 2011. She absolutely loves it...from the owners Portia and Anthony to all the caring staff...she has a great time playing with the staff and other dogs. We've been taking Cosmo there to daycare most weekdays since we moved and board her there when we are out of town. During one boarding, Cosmo had a minor medical emergency with hot spots and Portia took her to the vet to have them treated...talk about going above and beyond the call of duty! We recently adopted a Bichon mix rescue named Rascal and he's started attending Central Bark as well. Going to day care has helped him forge a bond with Cosmo more quickly...and he just loves playing with the staff and other dogs. They are always happy to walk in every morning and then are content and tired at the end of the day when we bring them home. We couldn't have dogs without a business like Central Bark and feel very lucky to have them in the neighborhood! read more

We were clients at Central Bark for quite awhile. Our dogs loved going there and were exhausted when they returned home. We recommended a ton of people to join as well and always spoke highly about the company. We went to agility classes, training classes, and fundraisers. Last summer, we went on a week long vacation and boarded both of our dogs at Central Bark. Our first day into the trip, Central Bark called to tell us that our larger dog had been seriously injured and taken to a local vet to get stitches. They were vary vague about what happened - they claimed he was "cut by the fence while laying down" and they did not notice the laceration until later in the day. We were not satisfied with this story -- why would they have such sharp parts of a fence in a play area where dogs can get seriously injured -- AND, our dog isn't really the 'lay down and chill' kind of dog -- how do you get a major laceration by laying down next to a fence? Halfway during our trip we sent a good friend down to the center to check on our dogs to make sure everything was okay with the stitches. He was treated very rudely by the staff. He was told that visitors at the center are strongly discouraged and was sent home. We were utterly shocked by this treatment (we had only positive communication with the staff and spoke so highly of their kindness). We picked up our dogs and paid a regular stay bill (no discounts for the trouble and injury). Our dogs were in pretty bad shape, the 'glue stitches' had ripped open and we ended up having to take him back to our vet for a reexamination and stitches (All of which we paid). Additionally, our other dog was covered in feces that had been obviously caked in his fur for a few days (this also happened previously one other time during a day visit). The owners/staff never called us back to check on our dog to make sure he was okay. We immediately stopped using the center and we have not been back to Central Bark since. read more

I had scoffed at the Doggy Day Care idea in the past, but am a firm believer in their service now! Our puppy had been getting really frisky during the week, and no matter how many walks and daily visits to the dog park we gave him, he still had a lot of energy that we had to figure out how to burn. We started taking obidience classes with Opportunity Barks at the Central Bark location, and were blown away with the size of the location and all the activities that seem readily available (large outdoor spaces and giant indoor spaces with fences, toys). I decided to look into Central Bark's Doggie Day care, and look at a few others around town to see if any of them fit my needs. I chose Central Bark because: 1). The website is incredibly informative and offers information on all thier services including bording, grooming, toys, prices, etc. 2). They have a schedule, which is also listed on the website. You know what your pup is doing all day. I was interested in this because as much as i like the doggie day care's that have giant windows and you can see the dogs running around inside, central bark has activities that include rest time throughout the day. With the space being as large as it it, you know that when they say they are playing fetch with your dog, they really are. 3). They send home a report card which outlines what your dog did, who he played with, if he had any issues with food or toy possesion, and if he went to the bathroom and ate, how he acted throughout the day (was he playful or mopey), etc. It was great to see all these things and know that his behavior is monitored and that he is being a good dog! 4). We have been taking our kooky pit mix to Central Bark in South Philly for 1 1 /2 years. She LOVES to go to Central Bark! She gets to play play play all day in a safe and fun environment, with loving staff and lots of room to run. We also board Reese there when we go away. We know that she will come home happy and tired, having had her own vacation while we have ours. She is on special food and medication; this represents no problem for the staff.
