On Sunday 10/23, I decided to seek medical treatment for my Families Golden Retriever as he started showing symptoms of What the vet on call at our normal practice thought was an intestinal blockage. Scout pulled a corn cob off the table the week prior and up until Saturday that week acted normal and was drinking and eating. I called around from 9 AM till 3Pm looking for a Emergancy vet clinic to see him as he was clearly in a great deal of pain and if it was indeed a blockage time was of the essence. Was turned down by these guys around 2pm for being at "Capacity" However when I just decided to drive there as it was my closest option no one was in the waiting room except one woman with her Australian Shepard. At he time no one was outside waiting in the cars parked either. The exam rooms were all open and Had clean signs on the exam tables. I walk up and they sign me right in even though I was previously told they weren't accepting any other patients on the phone just 20mins earlier. The receptionist and her shadowing partner were very friendly and Had me fill out paper work. I was met promptly by a Vet tech who was super sweet and back they took our boy. Unfortunately this is where the positivity ends. Because of the emergency I dint have money on me at the time. I was blessed enough to have my Grandmother age to help pay to get him seen initially. They even called and made su they had permission to charge her card. Was made to pay a $850 deposit to be able to leave and get food even though I had not received a preliminary diagnosis(X rays and fluids were started and ordered right away, was told that It would be a bit as the doc on call was scrubbing up for a surgery). I reluctantly had to pay as I am 28 weeks pregnant and a insulin dependent diabetic and could no longer wait for food. When I returned around 7:30 I was quickly ushered into a room where I waited for another 30 mins to talk to the vet who told me that There was definitely signs of a blockage but couldn't point it out to me on those radiographs. Her recommendation was then to keep him and rescan at 9pm to see if anything had changed though she was doubtful it would. At that point she wanted to admit him an open him up. At this tim my high end estimate for care already delivered was $1000-$1212. While waiting in the waiting room I applied both for CareCredit and Scratch Pay and was denied. (Even with Credit of 740, But no credit history) With that I opened a Go Fund me and Posted on several of my Facebook pages asking for help toward what seemed like the inevitable surgery. The phone rang numerous times and had several people ask to make donations to his treatment Only to hear " Let me ask the Dr." Was reached out To by multiple people Who tried,One of which who was looking to pay for the whole surgery had it arose and was denied and hung up on. Of course I didnt know this until after the fact as my phone was dead. 9PM rolls around and I am still waiting. They pull me back to the room where the vet comes in again telling me its as she thought he was looking no better and though no blockage can be fully visualized on the repeat we need to open him up.Was advised how i would have to transfer him as she wouldnt have time. At this time she added more labs and surgery to the estimate Low end an additional 5,000 high end 7,000. When I informed her that I couldn't afford that price her sales pitch came to a halt and was told that IF I didn't come up with the money he would likley perforate and die. I explained to her that I was trying to find the money but I didnt have it. She then said " Alright let me keep him till closing on the fluids in our car end you can take him home."I sat in the ER From 4-12. Was lead to believe he was deteriorating. However when I picked him up he was acting just fine. We got out the door for just over $1,212 The next morning my in-laws offered to pay for the services, They weren't open till 6 pm on Mondays. I called to have the X-rays and other tests sent to CARE in Frederick as they told me the night before I could call anytime to have these transferred if need to. For a place that made me believe hat this was the utmost urgency they didnt seem to show much once they realized they couldn't get any more $$$ out of me. The team at care was AMAZING. They kept him in hospital on pain meds and fluids waiting for the files to be sent. Finally got movement around 7pm 10/24. The doctors at CARE give us a Call and Say there is no evidence of a blockage at all in his bowels. He did have gas but that was more indicative of a gastric issue/ Virus. They keep him that night and offer to rescan at 5 am for no additional cost. They also send he radiographs including the orignals taken by CCAE and all come up clear. We got to bring home Scout on 10/25 after being mislead and seeking treatment for a blockage he lilkey never had according to the others. Took my dachshund to this place after a reaction to his rabies shot. Waited an hour to get in while he was swelling up. Finally a tech came to the door and got my dog. Vet called to say she couldn't give him steroids because he was treated with another drug to prevent a reaction. He was given Benadryl. She then went on to saying my dog was overweight and he would have a short life and have severe spinal issues. He was not in there for that! They muzzled my dog but never told me that. I found out from my Vet. I believe they hurt my dogs neck area. He came out after 3 hours super anxious and could not settle that night due to discomfort. The pain only got worse after that. After many trips to my Vet, he is on the road to recovery. I can't prove they hurt my dog but they will never see me there again. if I could give a zero I would. read more

They usually don't see exotic animals, but they agreed to see her because she was in critical condition and no where else could see her. We have a 14 year old yellow lab who may have eaten a chicken bone. They kept insisting on hospitalization and went into this whole thing about pancreatitis. They gave us two options and of course, I chose the one with at home treatment. They try to up sell everything and add additional medication. Turned out to be $50 higher than the high end estimate. At first I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. Times are different so I was unaware that I had to check in before bringing my dog so I am holding my dog who is crying/screaming in pain all while trying to fill out a check in sheet online. Then things took a turn for the better. They took my dog pretty much immediately it was only about an hour and they called telling me what they had found and asking if I wanted to do further diagnostics and explained in depth what my 2 options were. I then made my decision and the vet put in his professional input which even further reassured me of my decision. The cost was surprisingly low (less than $200 for the visit, and 2 medications). Whenever we do business with anyone, I normally use several social apps to help guide us in the right direction and avoid any places with bad business practices. Unfortunately in this case, we didn't have the luxury since our loved one was suffering and needed immediate attention. Our cat, Pedro, was mauled by the neighbor's dog. Anyways, as with any time a loved one is hurt or suffering, we're emotionally and financially vulnerable. I believe this business not only took advantage of that, but made errors during the process and altered their treatment plan to change the estimate without ever being fully transparent with us in hopes they could maximize profits. We submitted Pedro Saturday afternoon after the attack, surgery was set for Sunday and was to be released Monday morning. The initial estimate received was to clean the wounds, perform minor surgery, and provide treatment. This totaled a whopping $1400 (low end)/$1550(high). Due to the nature of the situation, timing, and business (24 hr weekend service), we understood this was high - but it was to save Pedro's life. We went with it and was told that they would begin working on him. We contacted them later that night and was told his wounds were cleaned and stitched up and he was stable. Without hearing an update on his procedure the following day at 2pm, we decided to reach out to check up on him. We're told that amputation will have to be done on one of his legs, and that we were already "nearing" our full estimate (after 1 night spent). The Dr. giving us their professional advice, wasn't the Dr. who we were originally working with and the one who was wasn't available Sunday to perform the surgery as planned (why are we paying the inflated ER express price again?). So with all of this said, we were painted a bad picture for Pedro and that amputation seems to be the only route we had left. Over the phone, we accepted the new estimate which was an additional $1900 to $3100. This estimate was to cover the amputation and any additional supplies and hours needed for treatment (still Monday release). The very next day we get a phone call from his original Dr.(Dr. Valles), telling me how could the other Dr. could even give their professional opinion without even removing the bandages (bandages weren't removed on Sunday, as promised and paid for; this leads me to think what else was not done). Furthermore, she said that not only did we have $500 left from the initial estimate, that she spoke with another Dr. that amputation wasn't required and that we should keep Pedro sedated and on meds for the rest of the day and release him to her the following morning (Tuesday). Of the $500 that was left from the initial estimate, Dr. Kaschenbach wanted another xray and blood work to be done prior to taking transition from Dr. Valles. As for the $1900 being charged for the second esitimate, we were told we would get refunded a majority of that back due to them not performing the surgery. Of course, after hearing this, all of it was great news until we went to pick up Pedro and the bill that accompanied him. I immediately sparked a conversation with Dr. Holms (Dr on duty) and the other techs (Kevin and Nicole), which no one could figure out the bill. Even though $700 was refunded, $1200 remained and was billed for the extra day he was there. This is where it gets really misleading. Per the bill and Dr Valles, minor surgery wasn't performed until Monday morning (no one wanted to tell me that; and was very hesitant). This is what believes me to think the amputation conversation was used to extract more money to supplement the first estimate. I told them up front that money was extremely tight and that we simply couldn't afford it. So putting a more favorable figure of $1400, instead of $2600 (which is what his minor surgery cost). I caution anyone to go here, be sure to get everything in writing and nothing over the phone! Their "details" are very vague (e.g., surgery; could be cleaning wounds or amputation). read more

I took my 3 yr old dog to the vets 4:30 on Sat. afternoon complaining of not eating/not drinking. Staff was friendly and helpful. Xray taken, anti-emetic given with directions on how to take care of her the next couple of days (bland diet). I felt better knowing that my labradoodle did not eat something she wasn't supposed to. Because of the pandemic, I couldn't go inside with my dog, but they did a really good job explaining everything that would happen from the physical exam to the X-ray. Last night was my second experience with this animal ER. This was the second time we had to euthanize one of our cats and went here. Everyone here from the front desk staff to the doctor were kind and patient. While this is a traumatic and heartbreaking process, they treated us with respect and showed compassion for the pets we loved so much. Do not be fooled by the name that this is an "emergency" facility. It is not. It is simply a vet that is open when others are not. I looked on their website, mostly for COVID protocols, before leaving and decided to call so I'd be sure I was starting the process correctly. They had me fill out an online form and advised to call from the parking lot when I arrived. Simple enough. Upon arrival, I called and they said I'd receive a call when an exam room was available. Really? That's it? No triage? No questions about the reason I need to have a pet evaluated at an "emergency" facility? Naturally, the next thing I observe is someone jump the line as the pull up, double park across 2 handicap spaces, and take their pet inside. I'm sure they filled out the form online before arriving. After waiting 75 minutes and observing one animal leave on a leash, go to pee, and return (enough information to triage that pet a low priority) I called for an update. I was told I had 3 animals ahead of me (including the one that jumped the line and arrived unannounced) and it would be at least another hour. With this information, I told them to take me out of queue and I'd take my chances managing my pet overnight. Now I have to hope that I can get a same day appointment with my primary vet tomorrow. This provider is an absolute joke, do not expect anything other than doc-in-a-box treatment after a ridiculous wait. read more

Continued from Google review, same day, finally took xrays, took her blood but no exam (?) dog now has vomited 11 times. I complained nobody has seen her, been here 3 hours 5 minutes. Was told the other dogs couldn't breathe so they were seen first. Told this by a loud, very rude, abrupt tech (?) (she must have meant all other dogs, I sat in waiting area and listened to why they were seen and maybe one or two came in like that (dogs that came in could breathe but that's what you said so do you have a different entrance?)How do you triage if you don't examine my dog to determine what's wrong with her? 40 minutes later after she vomited more, was told blood work never run because I never gave permission. I told doctor they took blood without my permission but didn't run it? I was told I didn't need to be rude and was getting loud. $1200 to be paid up front to hydrate my dog, anti nausea, may or may not have blockage, may or may not have pancreatitis. No definitive diagnosis. I can pick her up in the morning and take her to my vet. Bottom line, they appear to take advantage of people who are in a worried state of mind. Poor service, weak on answers, no compassion and high on cost. Read other reviews so I suspect mine will be met with the same condescending, lack of empathy, self-centeredness those were, but, unless the situation calls for a desperate measure, do your animal a service and don't go there. read more

This hospital is lousy. I was bitten by my cat on their property, told by the vet and staff to go to the emergency room because cat bites are inherently dangerous, sat in the ER until 3am for antibiotics, missed two days of work, developed diarrhea from the strong antibiotic, missed two more days of work, incurred out of pocket expenses of $300 and lost over $2,000 in lost income. Filed a claim with their insurance company and I was told to pack sand. Ridiculous. read more

Took our 5 year old dog here about a week go for symptoms of Kennel Cough. We waited in the room for 4 hours with him coughing and vomiting. One of the vet tech's come in and says "he definitely sounds like he has kennel cough" and she did a physical exam. 2 hours later the vet comes in, does the same physical exam and says "no he doesn't have kennel cough, his throat is just irritated". And gave us just cough pills to give him. Granted, we have another dog so we were very concerned if it was kennel cough if our other dog could get it. The vet reassured us that he MAYBE had have a mild case of kennel cough but our other dog would be fine. A week later, our other dog is now sick with the same symptoms. Coughing and vomiting. And another dog that we associated them both with is now down with the same symptoms. $220 later, 4 hours later, our dog was misdiagnosed and I highly do not recommend anyone taking there pet here. read more

My cat is battling terminal cancer, and when she suddenly started having difficulty urinating on a Sunday evening I rushed her here for fear of kidney failure. When I arrived I spoke on the phone to a vet tech, Darcy, who put my mind at ease. It was my 3rd time dealing with a veterinary emergency since the pandemic began and this was definitely among one of the better experiences. We ultimately waited in the parking lot for my cat to be seen for 2 hours, but Darcy's kind words and comic relief made it bearable. My cat was treated with antibiotics for a suspected UTI. The vet was considerate to the financial burden of an ER visit and recommended treating the symptoms rather than performing expensive diagnostic testing. I was given a detailed breakdown of my charges and a bag of catnip for the road; and my cat appears to have fully recovered from her UTI! Just last week we had to put down our very beloved and special German Shepard. Over the years we had stopped in late nights and weighed him at the facility, so when I entered the office and spoke with the receptionist, Jane, she immediately knew our dog and expressed compassion about what we were there to do. Emily, the vet tech, stayed with my fiancé at the car and helped console him while I was inside. Speaking with her helped convince the doctor to sedate our special family member in the car before taking him into a room. The process was handled very well, and again Emily stayed with us, and even shed a tear with us. We are very appreciative of the way she cared for him after he passed. Our only negative during this experience was the employee that was unable to lift our dog into the car when we came the next day to retrieve him, leaving my devastated fiancé to do it by himself. We were told he had a back injury, yet he presented with an air of indifference, not a good quality when dealing with people who just lost a family member. read more

Never in my life have I come across someone so completely rude and smug. I brought my 2 female cats into this practice to be euthanized. They are 15 year old sisters. Many things have changed about them over the past few months. One seems very confused most of the time, the other meows for hours on end for no known reason. It is believed that they both have some degree of dementia. A few weeks back one of them developed a urinary tract infection which prompted her to begin urinating on my carpet. Shortly thereafter the other cat began doing the same, as well as defecating all over my house. This behavior has increased rather than stopped and my home is being destroyed. The very difficult decision was made that we could no longer allow this to continue. We called this facility on a Saturday to give them a very brief description of what was happening and asked very pointedly if euthanasia was a service that they could facilitate. We were told yes. We drove 45 minutes to this facility (it's the closest place that is open on a Saturday). The ride was extremely stressful for both cats who are not used to being outside our home. When we arrived there were no people waiting, and no receptionist either. A tech came out, barely spoke beyond telling us we would need to fill out two forms, and asked us why exactly we were there. She left us for about 10 minutes. When she returned she said the doctor needed to know more about what was going on. We explained the details again, the tech went into the back again. About 5 minutes later she returns and says the doctor will not agree to do the procedure. Upset and very dismayed we asked to speak with the vet directly. A few minutes later Dr. Tanya Hopkins walks out behind the front desk, arms crossed, without introduction and silent. She give a nonverbal but clearly delivered, "Yeah, what" look? We begin to explain the details to her and she says in a disgusted manner, "I didn't become a vet to euthanize healthy animals." I explain that they are not healthy, everything about them has changed, our vet believes we are seeing dementia, and that we can't continue with them destroying our home. She says nothing, just stares at us. We ask if she is going to talk, her reply was, "Have you even thought of any alternatives, a rescue group, the Humane Society has an open outdoor drop box you can put them in". 15 year old cats with the beginning signs of dementia and no control over where they are going to the bathroom and she thinks a rescue group is the answer? She thinks it would be more humane to leave them in an outdoor cage over the weekend for the Humane Society to find on Monday morning? Is she completely ignorant to the fact that the national average (according to the ASPCA) for cat adoptions is 30%, while the other 70% of sheltered cats are euthanized? She thinks I should abandon two cats that I have cared for and loved for 15 years and force them into an already over burdened and under funded shelter system that would most likely euthanize them? During all of this no one from this facility ever looked at either cat. This so-called doctor had no idea what condition they were in. They could have been horribly ill, malnourished, or badly mistreated, but she couldn't be bothered to even look. We filled out their forms agreeing to pay for an examination if the doctor deemed it necessary. If she is so concerned about an animals well being shouldn't she have at least taken a look at them? I stated that had we had any idea it would be like this we would have never come. She says, "No one told me about this". We shot back at her saying that miscommunication between she and her staff is not within our control. She threw her hands up in the air and said very loudly, "Fine, I'll euthanize your cats that aren't even sick". At this point there was no way I wanted this witch to be a part of what was already going to be a horrendous experience, and I told her so. We picked up the carriers and left with the cats. Her behavior was anything but professional; it was childish and reprehensible! That all of this occurred without her ever so much as looking into the carriers, much less actually examining both cats, is beyond any claims of "ethics" she could try to use. Her conclusions regarding us were fully drawn before she ever met us, which is despicable. Had she shown any compassion or humanism for our situation this would have been a totally different experience. If she had spoken to us in a calm and adult like manner and explained that she would need to examine and assess both cats to ethically feel that this was in their best interest we would have understood. Bottom line: her behavior was hostile and unprofessional. She drew her conclusions without ever taking a look at either cat and offered abandoning them as a preferable alternative. We are filing a formal complaint with the Maryland Board of Veterinarian Medicine against this monster. read more

Unless you have absolutely NO other option, DO NOT go here. If there is an emergency, it is nice to know that there is someone available to help, however use as a last resort. I have recently had the unfortunate experience of putting my beloved dog to sleep. He became very ill very quickly. Before coming to the decision of putting him to sleep, we wanted to first, find out what was wrong, and then explore every option possible. However, when we arrived at CCAE, we were put in a room with a vet tech that barely spoke more than 2 words to us, and then left us alone in a room for quite some time (we were the only patients in the vet office-so why it took so long to see someone, I don't know!). Finally when another vet came in, they took barely any time looking at my dog and then asked ever so bluntly, "So your here to put him down, yea?" Without any compassion in her voice and demeanour, she basically scolded us to think there was any other option and that we were selfish people to not what him to be euthanized. We normally go to another vet in the area, however this took place on a Sunday afternoon when our other vet is closed. We immediately left CCAE seeking a second opinion and hopefully some compassion the following day from our normal vet-which we did get. I understand that vets have to act as the animals advocate because they cannot speak for themselves, but they must also be understanding and compassionate to the owner since they too are suffering. After showing some obvious disgust in how we were treated, another vet explained to us that another patient was coming in shortly for a scheduled euthenizing and she must have confused us with them. I understand people make mistakes, but even if you schedule your pet to be put down, I would hope that vet is still sensitive to the owners feelings and not treated the way we were. Our normal vet, Airpark Animal Hospital were the ones that ultimately put our dog down. Our vet, was extremely informative, and believed that information is power, and wanted to make sure that nothing could be done for our dog before coming to our conclusion. I could not have asked for a nicer vet, and allowed my family and I to say goodbye to our companion in an environment that was calming and comfortable for our pet and ourselves. Unless this is your absolute last resort, you are better off waiting until your regular vet opens. You will pay about 5 to 6 times what a regular vet charges and get MAYBE half the compassion and service. read more

I called four vets that were closing as I called on a Saturday afternoon, and thankfully, one of them gave me Central Carroll's number. From the person that answered the phone, the administrative assistant, vet tech, to the vet, everyone was wonderful. They were all friendly, knowledgable, and so great with my puppy. They gave no money surprises, of course you may pay more, it's an after hours clinic. However, mine was the same price was my normal vet. Dr. Barnes, the vet at the time, was a great vet and very warm and comforting. My dog had to get xrays and had to stay with them for awhile because he had to be sedated for them, and they immediately put me at ease, and he was done 30 minutes before he was supposed to be. When I went, shifts had changed and it was a different staff, and they were equally as nice. I was hoping the vet at the time also worked somewhere else closeby, because she was so excellent. She works in Waynesboro, and it may just be worth the drive. Thanks so much for making it a great experience and Central Carroll would be the first place I would call if I had another emergency after hours. read more

Had two expieriences with this place and will no more ever go there.the only reason I went in the first place was because i was desperate. The first time it was a Sunday and I was watching my daughters puppy and my big dog was defending a bone and bit the little guy and he had a nose bleed . i paniced and wanted him looked at so i took him to this facility. they took him in to evaluate him without me I might add. I guess to detemine how much of an emergency it was. I was told $80 dollars up front and I realized that so no prob. They sent me into a waiting room with the pup who fell asleep waiting. A foreign male doc came in and i explained why I was there he looks at pup 10 wks old I may add and opens his mouth to jump back as if to be bit by an alligator as the pup woke up. he tells me then they need to sedate him and doan xray and yada yada everything else he could run my bill up with. I looked at him and said now wait he is asleep again and we cant get an xray without putting this puppy to sleep? By now the pups nose had not been bleeding for a while. I said can you just give him an antibiotic so the wound does not get infected till i get to my vet. He agreed and did so. I felt as if he did very little exame of pup and just wanted to sock me a nice big bill. I manages to get out spending $150 dollars . Took pup to my vet next day and he was fine. Okay I paid for panicing. This time I had no choice again to go to this place wtha a very sick cat who had a urinary blockage christmas morning at 2 am. I called and asked who the vet was and they told me it was a woman and so I decided to take my chances . I couldn't let my cat die. I may have tried to find another vet had he been the one there. anyway the were good about taking us and the young woman was very nice as was the staff.i knew what his problem was and wanted him to be relieved of his suffering as soon as possible. So it was agreed that he needed unblocked.Not without telling me he needed bloodwork , an ultra sound and a few other things for $1200 to $1500 . Again my mouth flew open and I thought Merry Christmas to me . I asked why he needed an ulta sound when we new it was a blockage and could we just try and catherize him and drain his bladder so he doesnt die and i can get to my vet.So they told me of the dangers of not giving him blood work and stuff but I figure he is in more danger right now.They took him back in les then 15 minutes he was done. They gave me a urine sample for my vet and pain meds for the cat I enquired about an antibiotic and they thought it wasnot nessesary.Wrong. That cost around $400 But I would not complain because his life was on the line and I would have paid anything but beensick myself at $1200. I do not think these are the best vets in the world but what do you do in an emergency we have to take our chances. But I do think they will hike your bill up knowing that anyone who comes in with a sick pet will pay so be careful. My vet put kitty on antibiotics immediately. he is doing well. read more

This vet (Dr. King) was completely incompetent. She had no idea what was wrong with my dog, so she wanted to run three tests on him and keep him overnight. The total bill was $900. When I told her that was too much, she accused me of being immoral and inhumane. I agreed to at least run a glucose test (the one she swore would reveal his problem) but his results were normal. She said he wouldnt poop for 24-36 hours, but when we got home he took a big poop. Basically she knew nothing for $150. read more

I'm absolutely shocked by the negative reviews. Our 12 year old dog, who had cancer, took a turn for the worse on a Sunday evening and our regular vet was not available. We took him there on a Sunday evening and received excellent and compassionate care. My husband and I were very upset to have to put our dog down, and the entire staff was comforting and professional. From the administrative assistant who checked us in, to Lloyd the tech, and Dr. Ownes (sp?) the young, blond vet, our dog was treated like he was a pet of the staff. I was most impressed that the whole process took 30 minutes at most. I had taken my mom's cat to get put down at another vet the previous year, and we were there for hours. In regards to the price, we paid $100 to have my large dog euthanized. In my opinion this was a very reasonable fee. Considering this is an "Emergency Animal ER," I would have expected more. Honestly, not sure how others can complain about the price, they are there for emergencies. Again, fantastic and kind staff, the vet was so sweet to our dog; I am considering using them as my primary vet for my other animals. read more
