This morning Keopuolani Park had a fun run for Pono Viela so there were a lot of people when we arrived so we rerouted. The streetlight at Kaahumanu and Papa was out so we rerouted again. Finally we ended up here at KCC and the little playground was pilau. It was full of graffiti and it's clearly old but at least it's gated in. We didn't stay here as long as we usually stay at Keopuolani but it did the trick. We could use more nice playgrounds here in Central Maui or upgrade ones like these. I think next time Keopuolani is packed, we will just go to Wailuku Heights park even though it's pretty windy sometimes up there or the one by Wailuku Elementary even though there's usually ball games going at that one.

SO many good memories here at KCC over the years. From hanabata days, I can still clearly remember…read morethose joyful squeals as we bolted down the grassy hills on cardboard boxes 4, 5, 6 more times with a seemingly unending stream of energy. Even better were rainy days where body boards took the place of cardboard boxes and if we walked away unscathed with little to no bruises, we considered ourselves one of the lucky ones. I remember a number of field trips to the swimming pool, hanging on to the walls for dear life, but still having so much fun. Aah, those were the days. The park has changed very little since then & that's all part of it's charm. With it's soccer fields, swimming pool, community center, tennis courts, walking trails, etc. Kahului Community Center Park has always been a gathering place for families, friends, & generations of local Mauians. Although the facilities are quite a bit older, everything has been well maintained for the most part. The community center remains popular for all types of parties and events. Frequent games are hosted on the soccer fields. Tennis courts are well lit once the sun bids us adieu. And the playgrounds are enclosed for our littles to enjoy. The park is centrally located so I still come here to take my son out to play every now and then. The playground is geared more towards older children, but there's still enough for my 3 1/2 year old to enjoy. He might also just like being outside in general so there's that... hehe. All in all, great park!

When we have a few extra minutes in Kahului, we like to stop off at Kanaha Pond to enjoy the birds…read more There were mostly ducks and stilts today but we have seen Nenes, or Hawaiian Geese (the state bird). One time, there was a family with several little goslings. We stopped on the path to the shelter and let them decide if they wanted to pass us in the other direction. The male gave me a stink eye as they walked by and started hissing at me after they got a little ways past. It was funny that he became more macho after getting a little distance. Anyway, I always enjoy the Ae'o, or Hawaiian Stilt. They wade through the shallow water with such long legs, in search of food. Their chirps warn others of our presence. There are benches in the small shelter, where you can sit in the shade and watch the birds do their bird things. There also is a gate on the back side of the pond, near the water treatment plant, that lets you in to the dirt roads that were used to access a series of WW2 storage bunkers. There are other ponds back there, too. It's a nice area to walk through.

This is a private botanical garden near the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. It's easy to get here as…read morewell. Admission is $10 for visitors (which may be expensive unless you love plants), and thankfully free for kama'aina. It's not a large area, but it's filled with Hawaiian native plants. Many of them aren't the palm trees and plumeria you'd be expecting; these are the real ones, mostly hearty scrub type plants, plus many varieties of taro, breadfruit, and other staples. They had a nice variety of flowers. Parts of the garden are very sunny and hot, so dress accordingly. There are also shaded areas under trees and pavilions. They also have a clean restroom. It's worth a visit if you're a fan of flora and Hawaiian culture.

Dedicated to native Hawaiian costal and dry forest plants, the Maui Nui Botantical Gardens is…read morewithin (long) walking distance (under 2 miles) from the Kahului Cruise Port. It's collection started in the 1970s and once was a site for a zoo (which closed in 1997). Our party of four spent an early afternoon here, taking an Uber (got unlucky and hit surge pricing of $35) from a takeout lunch spot. The caretaker (who took our admission price of $10 per non-resident) was super nice, explaining how there is an app that one can download and can then use without internet to hear audio commentary on many of the plants in the collection. There is a modern bathroom building in the same area, along with a place to refill your water bottles. One can probably walk through the entire garden in about an hour if going fast, 2 hours if taking one's time and reading/listening. There are plenty of shaded places to sit, and because it wasn't too crowded, we never felt hurried. My favorite places were where they had the agricultural plants like taro, sweet potato, banana, and sugar cane (many varieties). They also had a small grove of coconut trees, cordoned off to prevent unfortunate accidents from falling ripe coconuts. They did have some flowering plants, including a hibiscus. But you wouldn't come here for that; instead its to learn about the plants native to Hawaii and pick up a bit of history along the way.

Currently, you wouldn't even know that this was an actual park as nothing is here in terms of "park…read morefeatures" sans for grass and a park sign. Early plans back in 2014 called for soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts but none of them have been built. Some might confuse this place with the nearby Central Maui Regional Sports Complex which is already in use as a multi-baseball field facility. The park is about 26 acres with restroom facilities and a small parking lot which is locked at night. It's a wide open swath of land graded into several levels. There are no benches, not even a tree to perch under. So what is this place good for? I say to let your two-legged, sugar-filled kids burn off their energy, or for your four-legged fur babies to run amok. But, please pick up their crap! OVERALL: If and when they develop the fields for sporting events, parking will be a big problem. I can picture vehicles illegally parking on the shoulders and center grassy median. Maybe it should be left as is.

I usually come to this park to play with the Aerobee , it's the perfect spot to just let the Far…read morehigh flying disc soar and run after. I threw this disc at the upper field end to end. Perfect to play at this field or just bringing my grand kids to let them run and wear them out. Just waiting for it to open back up again due to the Corona Virus.

The granddaddy of Maui's community centers is still going strong!…read more ATMOSPHERE: Zero a/c. That's a turn off for most. The facility is sports 3 sections - a central courtyard area with a high ceiling that is protected from the sun but if it rains some will get wet, and two hall areas that look into the central area via glass jalousie windows. The kitchen separates the two hall areas. The bathrooms are off to the side. It really is a convenient & intimate design but is just old. For those of you who remember the "pit", it has now been filled. PARKING: The two lots fit maybe 100 cars, and there's more parallel street parking. OVERALL: Great for a small party of 300 or less.

Consist of a small concrete stage that is open aired and a small area fronting it that can be used for a dance floor or to lay tables out for a gathering. It also has two separate rooms that is conjoined by a walk through kitchen. They do provide tables and chairs for a function. But keep in mind it's an older community center. A small storage room with brooms, mops and dustpans for you to use. Bathrooms are a bit run down, but at least it's not smelly or disgusting. The lighting isn't the brightest, but at least you can see what you're eating. It's a fair place to have a small function/gathering. Convenient in downtown Kahului and lots of parking. I'd use it for convenience. But not for an occasion like a wedding or fancy get get together.

We signed up for a small group surf lesson with Maui True North Surf Lessons, and it was one of the…read morehighlights of our trip. Brent was absolutely outstanding. One of our children has cerebral palsy, which affects his left side. While he can swim, he's not a strong swimmer, so we were looking for an instructor with experience working with differently abled individuals. Maui Surf Girls School recommended Brent, and we are so grateful they did. Brent was patient, encouraging, and incredibly skilled. He managed to give all three of our kids plenty of attention, while also adapting his instruction to help our son succeed. Thanks to Brent, our son was able to stand up on the surfboard, something we weren't sure would be possible. Seeing that happen was an unforgettable moment for our family. The rest of our vacation was spent listening to our kids ask for more surf lessons, which says everything about the experience they had. I would recommend Brent and Maui True North Surf Lessons without hesitation. If we're ever back in Maui, they will be our first call.
