My wife and I contacted Jackson/Hewitt to help us resolve back tax issues. We were then told we would be contacted the following week and that the fees would be $50 per hour...so far, so good. At the end of the following week, we did not hear back from them and had to call to find out what was going on. The tax preparer we were working with was not in and did not return our call until the following week (almost 2 weeks after promised). She then states that she would require a $500 retainer to continue working with us. This sum was never discussed, mentioned or even suggested outside of the $50 per hour rate. Not only do we feel J/H was unprofessional by failing to contact us as promised, but also unethical in regards to prices quoted versus prices asked for (the $500 retainer). We contacted another tax preparer and are getting promp, courtious service at a fraction of the cost without "surprise" fees as was the case with J/H.
