This review is years in the making. I don't typically write negative reviews, especially for small businesses, because I understand one experience may not reflect the majority. But in this case, I feel it's important to share. I came to this office years ago after moving to Cerritos, right before my wedding, simply looking for a new dentist and a routine cleaning. They had great reviews, which is why I trusted them. From the start, I was told I had extensive issues--multiple cavities needed to be redone and several crowns were recommended. This was surprising to me, as I've consistently gone to the dentist and had never been told I needed such drastic work. Still, I trusted their assessment. The procedures that followed were some of the most painful dental experiences I've ever had. They took hours, felt extremely aggressive, and left me in severe pain afterward--far beyond what I've ever experienced with dental work. I have a high pain tolerance, and this felt very wrong. What was most frustrating was what happened next. I returned multiple times explaining that I couldn't sleep, eat, or function due to the pain. Each time, my concerns were dismissed and attributed to things like not flossing (umm I couldn't floss because of the extreme pain), which didn't make sense given the level of pain I was in. After pushing back repeatedly--especially with my wedding just days away--I insisted something was seriously wrong and requested further evaluation. It turned out I needed three root canals as a result of their prior work. Separately, the crowns that were placed caused ongoing issues. Eating anything with texture would cause gum pain, and I noticed unusual gaps that trapped food. When I brought this up, I was told the only solution was to redo the crowns at additional cost. My crowns also came off. Later, I happened to see a different dentist at the same office (a female provider who may have been temporary), and she immediately noted that the crowns had been placed at an awkward angle. She corrected them, and since then, I've had no pain and no further issues such as crowns falling off. I ultimately switched dentists and have not needed any major dental work since--just routine cleanings every six months, with no recurring problems. Based on what I went through--particularly the aggressive treatment, the outcome, and the dismissal of my concerns--I feel it's important for others to have full context before making a decision. read more

I need an implant to replace one of my teeth. DR Shawn was great, friendly, knowledgeable, professional. The staff were great, friendly, polite, well informed. The Dr and his staff, answered all my questions, explained everything in detail, I had the first part done. The implant and then in 4.5 months I will be back to check the healing and get scanned for the replacement tooth. read more

Very easy to relate with. The dental assistants make you feel relaxed. They go over everything they do , with you to make you feel comfortable. Then there's Dr. Shawn, what a professional at his job. I'm a 62 year old man, and the biggest baby when it comes to dental work. It took me a few years to build up the nerves just to go see the dentist. I waited to make this review but I feel it's only fair to do so. I'm giving 1 star for the nice front desk staff but zero stars if I could for this establishment. Full transparency, the only "treatment" I received was an X-ray of my tooth. I arrived on time for my appt, and went on to wait for a literal 90 mins. Not a single person checked in with an update, to make sure I was okay, etc. I went to the room next door to ask a staff member for assistance with something and she says flatly "I don't know it's my first day", yet after listening to what I needed assistance with realized she was able to help. I was communicating with my husband about my frustrations and said to myself I'd leave at the 1.5 hour mark if not a single soul checked in or no update. In walks (I believe her name is) Dr. Kim (younger, wears bone colored platform crocs). She didn't greet me until I said hello first which was really unsettling. There's a pic of my teeth on the computer which she looks at and then tells me I'd have to come back because they won't have time to have my appt since there are other people waiting. I was absolutely floored. I have no idea how this place has such high stars but this is quite possibly the worst medical establishment I have ever visited. read more

Just moved to the area and found this dental office through good reviews--still not sure how it earned them. My experience so far has been frustrating and disappointing. First visit: waited an extremely long time before being seen. Wisdom tooth extraction: still waiting on "insurance approval," which is odd because our insurance usually processes quickly. Second appointment (for my daughter): she couldn't even get her full exam--had to reschedule. My appointment today: only got a cleaning. The doctor was running late again, and now I have to wait until November just for an exam. That's over a month away--not easy to manage with a full-time job. Also, I received an email directly from our insurance showing coverage and approval for my daughter's procedure, but the office coordinator has yet to follow up at all. Important FYI: If your surgery requires general anesthesia, it will not be covered here--they'll quote you $900 out of pocket, even though my insurance says they cover anesthesia at 100%. Something doesn't add up. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place based on my experience. Poor communication, long delays, and insurance issues that just don't make sense. read more

I am super happy to have found my new dental home at Cerritos Dental Surgery. The office is always nice and clean. The front desk staff all very kind and accommodating. They are so patient with me when I need to reschedule and have helped me find something that fits my schedule even on short notice. Shout out to Nhi who is seriously the best dental hygienist! I have seen her twice and my husband goes to her as well. My cleanings have been quick yet thorough and most importantly... painless. She checks on me multiple times throughout the visit to make sure I am tolerating everything ok. She takes the time to educate me on various aspects of oral hygiene and even plays informational videos on topics relevant to my dental care - you can tell she really cares and wants to help. My first visit here, I had a full set of x-rays taken prior to my cleaning, and afterwards, Dr. Shawn came by for a consultation to discuss what dental work needed to be done. I received a detailed quote, and they included all possible charges prior to applying my insurance coverage. They are very clear about the remaining balance before they help you schedule an appointment to complete the dental work. I appreciate the transparency because I have not always received itemized reports for dental work I needed done in the past. I grew up deathly afraid of going to the dentist and this place makes it such a great experience. I highly recommend this office - you won't regret it! Honestly, he just cares about his patients. Never pushes any unnecessary procedures and concerned with overall health. Back in the day, they used questionable materials for fillings and I need to have them removed. I was having headaches and I truly believe they were the cause. He took care of me like a champ. Of course, the nitrous helped with the anxiety as well. Also had a cracked front tooth. It wasn't bothering me, but he worked with me so I could pay for them and get it done. Overall 5 out of 5. I had extensive work done: 2 extractions and 2 implants. The dentist did great with all the work except the final bridge. The bridge did not match my other teeth. I paid $15,000 for teeth that didn't match color or shape! I was very dissatisfied with the end result. He offered to fix the color, but I lost confidence in his ability to fix it correctly. He wanted to work on my good tooth next to the bridge and match that color to the new bridge rather than just fix the bridge. read more

When I moved back to Cerritos, I needed to find a dental office close to home. I found Cerritos Dental Surgery on Yelp. It is very close to home. I can walk there. At first, I was hesitant to try a new dentist and team because I had a good team in the South Bay but the drive was too far. What a nice surprise! Dr. Shawn Hofkes is pretty cool and his team is so nice, kind and knowledgeable. I like that they remember who I am when I walk in. The women at the front are very welcoming. Really regret ever coming here got work done that I really didn't need in the first place most likely to make more money Somehow dentist convinced me of getting my front crowns redone. Well I went ahead of getting them done and was very disappointed on how they looked so I asked for them to be redone it took a few times until it looked decent. After the procedure was finally done This made dentist wife mad that I had complained (she is/was the office manager) later asked if I wanted a cleaning which I agreed to and had a dental hygienist purposely scratch up my other healthy teeth because I had complained as revenge. About six months ago, I came in for a routine cleaning with Soki. As she probed around, she found that I had bleeding gums. She told me I had gingivitis. My first thought was, "That sounds like an old person's problem. NO!!!" Within milliseconds l came to terms with my dental predicament. We discussed some options like laser treatment and flossing. I opted for flossing - it's free. She scared, I mean informed me that if I continued not to floss, I'd eventually have to do a deep cleaning. Years ago I had a deep cleaning elsewhere and it took two sessions and involved needles. No thank you. Soki also recommended a Waterpik. She was very encouraging and I learned so much. Thanks for being direct and giving me sound advice. I now use the Waterpik almost daily. I floss once or twice a week. No more gingivitis! Cerritos Dental Surgery quite literally changed my life for the BETTER. For a multitude of reasons including dental anxiety from terrible childhood experiences, I had neglected my oral health and appointments for years. Finally, enough was enough, and I decided to come in for help. I found Cerritos Dental Surgery on Yelp and when I called/came in for my appointment all of the positive reviews were proven correct. When I called for an appointment, they were incredibly calm, kind, and understanding booked me for a next day consultation. Understandably, during my consultation I was nervous about the amount of work I would need done. However, Dr. Shawn and ALL members of the team (dental assistants and front desk staff) were incredibly understanding, kind, patient, and informative. I did not feel judged at all, and honestly was comforted by their care. Also, the entire vibe of the office is amazing. Music is playing so the drills aren't to loud, and there is a view in every room of the trees outside; which I find super calming. After the consult, I received a fair itemized quote for the work that needed to be done, and what my insurance (PPO) would cover. I was scheduled for a procedure the following week. All of my questions were answered, and they encouraged me to call if I needed anything. Follow up appointments have been amazing (shout out to Dr. Kim, Shawn, and Dental Assistant Staff). I love these guys!! I use to HATE the dentist. I would dread it and often miss appointments (on purpose) when I moved to the area and found Dr. Hofkes and his team, Ive totally changed and actually look forward to coming. Now my whole family comes too, and I recommend everyone! I also love how much I trust them, I never feel like they're trying to rip us off with unnecessary treatment. As a matter of fact, they've told me I don't need to do certain things that were necessary. I have also started Invisalign treatments with them as well and I'm really happy with the progress so far.
