Super generous portions at GREAT prices. I got a chicken taco plate with rice and beans and a carne asada taco a la carte. Totaled under $8. My group also got tilapia and shrimp from the grill, a torta (HUGE!!!), and posole (which I tried - only on the weekends and SUPER good). We were all very pleased with our orders... Highly recommend. Food is fantastic and is worthy of 5 stars. The service is less than average. The food doesn't come all at once. Three meals came out at different times, within 10 minutes of each other. The fajitas came out last - sizzling hot. By the time we got our tortillas the fajitas had cooled quite a bit. Ask to talk to a manager and she avoided us. My friend got up and approached the manager and she didn't take any responsibility. She was waiting on tables that day but could have stopped by our table to apologize for the service. As many others have said, this is THE best Mexican food in the area. I grew up in So Cal eating very good Mexican food most my life and nothing else in this area even comes close. I had pretty much given up on real Mexican food as every time I would try a place the locals here recommended, it was always gross and disappointing. Forgot about all the other small chains like Mexican Villa, El Puente, El Charro, etc. Not even in the same category. If you want true Mexican food, this is it. Don't settle for the places all the locals here call good. It is a small place though so be prepared to eat in tight quarters and it can get loud if the place is filled. Num num num num num....the tiniest and packed restaurant in town. There is almost always a line to get in. Come early or late or wait. Usually about a :15-:30 wait but WORTH IT!!! If you can find room to squeeze up to the 'bar' do it! They cook your food behind the eating bar and it's all fresh and made to order. Good to watch some fùtbol and try awful attempts at Spanish. The wait staff is friendly and remembers everyone! Modelo on tap and Miller Lite I think. Portions are big and they don't mind tweaking your order. For insstance, I don't eat rice or beans and they substitute more salad and guac. Love this place! read more

One of my favorite places to get mexican in Springfield! My boyfriends family comes here on a nearly weekly basis and I can understand why. The food is some of the best mexican I've had in the Midwest, and the staff is so friendly. The margaritas are all amazing, and you get salsa and chips right when you sit down. Yummmmmyyyy. We were both in the mood for Mexican, so I suggested Cesar's Old Mexico since we hadn't been there before and I'd been meaning to try it. So glad we did. I write this while enjoying my leftover grilled garlic shrimp and pupusa. The homemade salsa has just the right amount of heat, and the guacamole has a nice kick of jalapeño to it that you don't get often. My husband's shrimp fajitas were gorgeous and delicious too. This wasn't your standard Springfieldian Mexican fare; definitely a cut above and much more authentic tasting. Service was a little slow, and the restaurant is crowded and loud, but honestly, it fit. It was nice to be able to have a leisurely lunch, with excellent food; and there is a certain aspect of privacy in a loud, public place which can be fun. Will definitely be back. Wow, finally a Mexican restaurant that makes Mexican food! The tacos are the real deal, carnitas are actually fried and the house salsa has a punch. Will be going on a Saturday to try some of the authentic dishes such as pozole. If you're a fan of Mexican, not Tex-Mex, check this place out! Update *11/14/17** Made a mistake and sat at the bar where could watch the cook. She had gloves on and basically contaminated everything with raw meat. I watched her put the raw pork on the grill, then grabbed a tortilla to make a quesadilla, touched the cheese, touched plates, cilantro, onion, rice, etc. She then grabbed raw fish and put on the grill, same gloves and touched all the above again. Went on a Friday afternoon, pretty busy (our first time to visit) and people kept coming in. Our waitress never smiled, she acted like we were a burden to wait on. A younger waitress was all smiles and asked her tables if they needed anything, how was everything, ours didn't nor did she say a word except to ask what we wanted. Well she did ask my husband if he wanted the water she was delivering to another table, she didn't ask me. But the food was very good, the salsa was to hot for us but it tasted good. I always try the basics because if that's good everything else usually is. The food actually had a flavor, something lacking at some other Mexican restaurants we have visited. My husband relliano had no stem or seeds so he could eat it all he liked it a lot. I guess my only complaints was our seating looking at the huge coke machine and sitting in the doorway and our complacent waitress. What an awesome place! A 10 minute wait at 6 pm on a Wednesday evening. I had chicken and chorizo which was huge and delicious. My wife had two beef soft tacos and they were excellent. It was absolutely beautiful inside, and they actually cook your food in front of you if you sit at the bar. The prices were good and the food was delicious. I was, however, extremely disappointed that when I ordered the Pollo con Queso, the menu stated that it came with rice, beans, and guacamole salad like all of the other chicken dishes. When they brought my food, it only came with the chicken and rice and cheese. I asked for the rest of the food that the menu stated it came with, and she told me that it didn't come with it. She brought me a menu and the menu did in fact state that it came with the extra food. The waitress only then informed me that the dish I ordered was the only one that didn't come with the beans and salad (which is half of the meal) even though the menu doesn't state that anywhere. I wasn't even given the chance to purchase the remaining half of the meal. If you have a menu that tells your customers what they are paying for, maybe have a menu that's accurate? Or better training on relaying missing information to the customers? I will say that there was a TON of rice and chicken and cheese, but I would rather have half of the amount and the rest of the items the menu states comes with it. I did really really love the centerpiece in the middle of the restaurant under the skylight, it looks like something you would see at Disney from Coco. I enjoyed this place! Their current location is small and can get crowded when they are busy. For lunch today I had the Al Pastor Torta and a papusa. Both were very tasty. The al Pastor was nice and flavorful and I thought the rest of the ingredients complemented the meat nicely. The bread is toasted and it comes with lots of fresh onions and jalapeños. I was digging it! My papusa was delicious and something I would definitely order again. They have a wonderful menu with lots of choices and great service. This was the second time going there. The first time I didn't get to eat. I waited at the hostess stand with a crowd of people for about 15 minutes before being acknowledged and told there was a 40 minute wait. This time I also waited 15 minute but then was seated quickly. They need a dedicated hostess. From there, the service was okay. Watching each employee it's clear they are islands. No teamwork involved or working together to serve the customer. The server worked hard but the lack of teamwork hamstrung his ability to deliver great service. This resulted in the order coming out in pieces rather than altogether. Almost like being served courses. The overall time for a "quick lunch" at 1:00 pm was over an hour. The food was, sadly, mediocre. The homemade chorizo tasted like ground sausage with commercial taco seasoning. No flavor. No chilis. No spice. It wasn't like any chorizo I've ever had. The asada for the tacos wasn't much better. Bland and cut in a fine chop or almost ground. The tacos were served with usual accompaniments but the cilantro had so many stems in it. It hadn't been cleaned properly. The queso was bland and boring, so thin it was almost watery. Bottom line, I've had so much better for half the price in other major metropolitan areas. I can't understand why Springfield settles for this kind of middling food and pays such a markup. Sorry, I won't be back. read more

In a city of "pseudo-Mexican" restaurants, Cesar's is the real deal. The best I've had outside of Santa Fe. My go to are the chiles rellenos, but it's all wonderful. They're not currently open for lunch, but I'm hopeful they'll start again soon. read more
