When it comes to my hair, I usually just let it grow until it starts breaking ponytail elastics. Once that happens, I realize I need a haircut and want one immediately. What I like about C'est La V is that it's nice salon, and yet I've always been able to get a walk-in appointment. I'm not sure about the priciness versus other salons, my cuts are usually about $50 and my highlights were $130. My usual stylist is Tijana, and I just love her. She's very bubbly and cute, and listens to what I say I want. She also gives me advice like "Girl, you need some highlights" which I finally took her up on and they look fantastic. Also, she is well-versed on popular culture, which is important in a stylist. You don't want to be in the chair talking about politics, you want a stylist who has an opinion on Grey's Anatomy and how many drugs Anna Nicole Smith was doing. This is the stuff that turns salon time into girly-girly fun time. The other stylists seem to have regulars as well, and everyone who comes and goes seems happy with their results. And one time, I saw Vicki (the owner) perform a corrective-color miracle on this woman who's hair was a disaster. Anyway, I'm trying to get better about scheduling my appointments (these highlights take maintenance, gasp!) so I'm sure I'll be back here many times in the future. read more

My review is solely based on eyebrow waxing FYI So I've been living not far from C'est La V for a few years, but only went in about a year ago. I was walking along Clark, and I realized I had a wedding coming up in a week and I hadn't gotten my eyebrows done. Eep! So I walked in and immediately made an appointment with Christie who happened to be free right then. Awesome! Fast forward to now, and C'est La V has been the only salon doing my eyebrows for the past year. Christie is always good about fitting me in, whether I call first or just walk in and schedule something. She is absolutely awesome at eyebrow waxing. My 'brows always look fantastic when I leave. She's cheerful, kind, and pays attention to me. Even though I only go there every few months, she has remembered that I'm allergic to tea tree oil, despite me only telling her once at my first appointment. That's pretty impressive. She remembers things about my life that I mentioned to her several months ago. Most people can't do that at all, let alone someone I only see every other month or so. I like Christie a lot. She's very personable. She chats with me as she does my 'brows, and I appreciate it. She doesn't rush the waxing, she takes her time and makes sure she's doing it the way I want. Today we did a whole new shaping, and she showed me the one eyebrow to make sure it was the way I wanted it before continuing to the next one. I wanted it a little bit tweaked from there, so she did that and showed me it again. When it was the way I wanted, she did the other to match and then showed me both in the mirror. My eyebrows look great! On to Anna, the new esthetician. Christie was busy last time I called in for an appointment, so she put me with Anna, who could see me sooner. Anna is nice, but not as personable as Christie. I found her attempts to get me to purchase a facial to be absolutely annoying. She was very pushy about it (like others have mentioned), which I did not appreciate. She went on for the whole appointment trying to sell me on it by telling me how many things she saw wrong with my skin. She said she could see I had a lot of blackheads on my nose and forehead. While I may have a few blackheads on my forehead, I have none on my nose. The fact that she can't distinguish between blackheads and the visible sebaceous filaments that everybody has shows me she doesn't know enough about skin for me to trust her with a facial. As an esthetician, she should know the difference. I can't fault her 100% for it though, since many people confuse the two and she's definitely not a dermatologist. However, I don't like people trying to push things on me, especially when they are insulting my skin. To be fair, it was having issues then like it always does during that time of the month, but that's no reason to go on about it for 15 minutes. Like many, I have more acne caused by hormones at that point than I normally would. The only thing she sold me on was that I wouldn't be going back to see her for my eyebrows again. She did a decent job, but it wasn't good enough to make another 15 minute sales pitch worth it. Besides, Christie has done a much better job, and she is consistently good at eyebrows. I'm actually moving to another state next week, and I'm sad I'll have to find another person to do my eyebrows. It's kind of scary because one wrong move and you look ridiculous. I hope to be able to have her wax them when I'm in town though. All in all, I highly recommend Christie for eyebrows. She rocks! read more

I was referred to NICO COLATOS at C'est La Vie by a friend for a haircut. I came in for a consultation and brought in pictures of what I was looking for. I was very clear and explained that I needed LONG layers otherwise my hair curls up and gets like a pyramid shape on top. He complimented me on my great hair and said we need to get the shape right.He went on and on, how great my hair was and he appeared to be listening. We set an appointment for the following Friday. During the haircut Nico Colatos invited me several time to call back the following week and let him know how the cut turned out. He was very friendly and kept stating what great hair I had and he wanted feedback on the haircut. He appeared sincere. As it turned out the haircut was not what I had hoped for or asked for. I ended up with lots of short layers that were uncontrollable and one side was much longer than the other side. The back along my hairline curled up into a scroll. When I called Nico Colatos the following week on Thursday, the first time we were cut off. I called again and he at first did not recognize me, then said he remembered me. He stated that he was in the elevator and would call me back. He never did. An hour later I called Nico again. I stated that he had asked for feedback during the appointment and asked me to make sure I call him. I told Nico I was having an issue with my hair and wanted to come in so he could take a look. Also I told him my hair was frizzing up. He told me it was not the haircut Nico got defensive and dismissive. He said he was busy with clients. I asked about the following week and he gave me the same line, "He was busy with clients". (What am I? I'm a client. Is this this how you treat a client?) I stopped in the salon and Nico had left before the end of the day, people at the salon were not helpful. I was told that they'd ask him to call. Nico Colatos never called me. If this is the kind of service you you are looking for you know where to go, but you won't be seeing me there!! read more

Some background: I wandered into C'est La V for a drop-in eyebrow wax in 2008 - GREAT shaping!! Christie was super nice, and encouraged me to see her for a haircut. I have THICK hair, and Christie did an awesome job of "texturizing" and "taking the weight out" - familiar to terms to anyone with thick hair. I never looked back. That is, until Christie moved away. I was so, so, so sad and spent the next TWO years trying to find a stylist in Chicago who could handle my thick hair like Christie could. No one even came close. Then this summer I got the good news that Christie was back!!!! I can't emphasize enough how good Christie is with thick hair, long or short (I've seen her when I've had both). In terms of color, Christie helped me out when I was transitioning from years of blond highlights to my natural color, and she did a great job! I've been dye-free at my natural color for a few years, but as more and more grays come in, I will definitely be seeing her for color. It is a cute, family owned & operated salon without all the fluff (and cost) of the bigger salons. I've only had Christie, but her mom Vicki and other stylists are all very nice and friendly to all customers. Another plus - they have product for sale, but are NOT pushy. I recently moved to Chicago and was desperately in need of a cut and color. I pass by C'est La V every day on my way to work, so I called in and I could not be happier. I was lucky enough to get Dimitra (amazing!) and she did a wonderful job. Keep in mind I have dark brown hair that I highlight like crazy so that I'm blonde overall and I hadn't gotten my roots done in four months ... it was not a good look. Dimitra took the time to ask me exactly what I wanted and nailed the cut and the color (lowlights that make me look good and give my color dimension, but still a fun light color) ... I can't even begin to guess how many foils she had to put in, but she did not cut any corners and her skill with color totally shows in my hair. I told her I was nervous about my hair pulling brassy and she immediately told me she'd use a toner, and she picked the perfect one. I don't have a very complicated cut but I have had a bad history with bangs which she totally understood, and gave me a side bang so i can have a fun look but can still pull/pin it back. Plus I am still trying to grow out my hair, and she somehow managed to get rid of all the old ends without having to take off much length at all. I haven't gone to anyone else there but I saw a few different cuts and colors while I was there and everyone was amazing and did a great job ... I definitely suggest Dimitra but I'm sure you'd be fine with anyone. Also (not as important to me, but I know it is to some people) the interior of the salon is bright and open, but stylish and fun at the same time. All of the stylists were talkative and welcoming ... overall a great salon and I highly recommend it. read more

My first experience at C'est La V was A-OK. The owner - Christie - did a good job at fixing my haircut and blow drying it but I didn't like the fact that the salon is no very clean, the products are covered in dust, the hair brushes are covered in hair from other customers and the list can go on. I went in for a wash and cut and although I mentioned my hair was full of product and dirty I was only washed once - therefor it got dirty the next day. The second time I wanted to go in for a wash and style I was told 7 pm was a little too late - ughm ok...I didn't like that! Guess what - the salon is often empty with no clients and here you have someone trying to come back and you refuse the appointment? It wasn't even a long appointment...it was for a wash and style - 45 min max? I suggest Christie should do a spring cleaning and work on her customer service. read more

I love this place! I have been moving and I must say packing isn't the hardest thing about the move. The hardest thing is finding the perfect hair stylist. Someone who knows what they are doing and that you can trust to give you good suggestions. I have been seeing Christie for two years now. She the absolutely the best! I am picky about my hair and she always has me looking perfect when I leave. She knows her colors (I am a blonde). Since I destroy my hair with all the styling and bleaching I do, she teaches my tips and trick to make my hair healthy again. If I have a blowout done, I do not have to do anything with my hair for 3 days. I wish I could see Christie at least once okay maybe twice a week if I could. Check C'est La V out. I've been in twice to have my eyebrows tinted by Anna. She was polite and I was pleased with the outcome the first time.... but I will not be back due to her extreme service and product pushing. It is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to salons and has definitely made me want to avoid this place from now on (even though its right around the corner from me. Sadness) The first time I was expecting to spend $20 and ended up leaving $80 poorer because she talked me into eyelash tinting (in my opinion it did not look any different than applying mascara and washed out within a few days). I will accept that one was my lack of will power, but then she told me she couldn't let me leave without doing "a little clean up" waxing - which my skin is far too sensitive for and is basically unnecessary. The only reason I get them tinted in the first place is so that I have some sort of guide for drawing them in because they are so sparse and light colored! After refusing the wax, she talked me into letting her tweeze them a little bit -which I found out when I checked out was another $15-20 - and the shaping was awful!! She then continued to try to sell me on various facials, massages, and a long list of other products that I continued to tell her I was not interested in... item after item after item. The second time I went in I was determined to not get any of the add-ons and was successful (yay me!) but not without having to say no to the same list of facials, massages, tinting, waxing, etc. It took me forever to get out the door because she wouldn't let me leave without telling me about the various massage deals for the month. It was exhausting!! And the kicker was that this time the eyebrow tint hasn't lasted more than a few days. Total waste of time and at this point I am more than willing to walk an extra couple of blocks to go to someone who will just do the service I request. read more

Christie is my favorite hair stylist in the city! I've always gotten multiple compliments about my hair after getting it done. I discovered her salon by asking a random lady at Nordstrom about the color of her hair. I used to have trouble getting my hair the more natural blonde I like and her technique seems to work. My hair is so much healthier and longer since I've started going to her. I would recommend anyone to go to her salon. The salon is always very clean! As a guy with pretty basic hairstyling needs, I can't comment on some of their fancier services, but I can say they do a great job with me every time, I've never had to wait more than a few minutes with an appointment, and they're always pleasant and fun to talk to. The quality of the experience is well worth paying a little bit more, but overall prices are very reasonable. Definitely recommended over rolling the dice at the Hair Cuttery etc., and among the higher-end places I've tried in the neighborhood, C'est La V is the best hands-down. read more

There's a reason why this salon is always empty when you walk past. I made a horrible error and went to a beauty school for a haircut. Needless to say I was buffered. I went into cest la vie for help with shape and style and walked out worse than I went in. I told the owner what I hoped for and she talked me out of it. I let her cut my hair and as she blew it dry I realized how horrid it mR attitudeade me look and was nothing close to what I asked for. on the verge of years I told her I wasn't happy and she have me a really bad attitude. In fact, I believe she even said "bullshit" at some point. I was ready to walk our and she begrudgingly offered to fix it, but forewarned me she would have to charge for another haircut. After more hacking, and paying still price, I walked out in tears. Oh, and as I was getting my cost, I noticed the only other customer in the bathroom with the second owner pointing out problems with her highlights. There's a reason this salon has been open for 25 years on Clark St. in Lincoln Park; they are truly the best in the neighborhood. I always leave with a clean, sharp, confident hairstyle that keeps me comfortable at work and also during the evenings and weekends. As a guy, my hair tends to grow thick quickly. Naturally any chemical hair treatment can subject your hair to damage. Christie uses a gentle, yet effective line of Keratin that includes using a conditioning process mid-way.
