I'm wondering why no one addresses the daily issue of guys using the mirror in the locker room ( lockers visible right behind mirror) and the mirrors that are like 4 foot in front of toilet stalls over the sinks for selfies on their phones and even setting up tripods to film themselves ( not sure how they aren't capturing others in these videos as we walk or dress behind them) though CFX website says this is not allowed. No signage in locker rooms and when I asked the manager if they have a policy against doing this he said no. Asked several other managers at their other facilities and no one said there was a policy forbidding use of phones or cameras in locker rooms. Seems pretty obvious they don't care about the expectation of privacy one has in a locker room / bathroom even if the selfie session unintentionally captured someone changing for example. And no corporate phone number available to members or employees to contact them regarding any issues. It comes across sketchy.when you email them with the address given by multiple employees, no response ever given. Honestly if it wasn't so convenient to visit I'd quit. Putting this place at two stars for now for the cleanliness and equipment. First of all, I went to this gym because I was looking for a replacement gym because Blink fitness near Riverside closed down. It was a little bit more expensive than blink but I was willing to play the price because it was a 24-hour gym and it was close to my house. I did notice that the gym looked a little bit older and less modernized than blink fitness but I was happy enough to just find a gym close to my house. I noticed several things after being a member for about a month now. 1) Just tonight several hours ago, I brought my own water but half was full and I was going to refill it and I noticed the gym fountains water spouts had mold/rust on it. Being in the military and having lived in the barracks that have had mold in it it's really a health risk and can make someone sick. To have mold means that those fountains have been neglected cleaning. Anybody who has cleaned a water fountain would be able to notice that. 2) The gym equipment is relatively kind of old and like others said, not maintained enough. The treadmill looks old and I miss the blink fitness treadmills, which even included a built in fan. 3) I in the men's restroom, they have those portable hand dryers that are motion sensored, but they can't have motion sensored urinals and sinks? I hate touching things and nobody bothers to flush the urinal because you have to touch the handle so when you go to the urinal it reeks the of pee. 4. The most expensive thing I think is the personal trainer. The training sessions are once a week and over $100 I think it's $140 for a personal trainer, once a month. I think that's a little too much for once a week for a month if you ask me. I would have considered if it was $100 a month for once a week, maybe... I really hope this gym improves otherwise I'm going to have to look elsewhere for a more cleaner and better maintained gym. I would recommend this gym. It's nothing like the reviews I've read. From my experience here I've had a wonderful experience. The staff has been extremely helpful and professional. The cleaning lady does a wonderful job keeping the bathrooms clean. From my time being here I've also seen positive changes in the gym. Also Ryan the manager has been extremely helpful. Hes always busy and still manages the time to help everyone especially while running 2 locations. I would highly recommend this gym! read more

Pros: It's a $15 gym (used to be $10 in the old days). It's big. Cons: it's a $15 gym so it is setup a way that a $15 gym would be and brings the $15 gym crowd. What do I mean? First, the gym is not well taken care of. Very staff there besides a few college students that run the front desk and a janitorial staff who seems intent on cleaning the weight area during peak hours. Many machines are in need of maintenance and are missing parts. Dust bunnies everywhere. Poor ventilation makes the gym smell musty, which doesn't help with the vinegar based cleaning products they use. Second, the crowd. $15 gyms bring in $15 crowds, meaning get ready for people to not put away their weight, drop their weights mid-set, do lunges and other exercises in a high traffic area while being oblivious to this, people crowding around machines and the dumbbell rack, dumbbell hidden all throughout the gym, and social media influencers in their brightly colored, form fitting clothing. The reality is that big box gyms are designed to rake in money. They do this by adverting a low monthly few while also downplaying the annual maintenance fee ($40), although I'm not sure what exactly is it is maintaining in this crypt, an enrollment fee to join, and a cancelation fee to quit. You don't even to have to go to the gym for it make to money. As such, there's very little rate of return on making the gym anymore than passable. People serious about their training should look at other places, such as Iron Mine Gym. read more

I wouldn't recommend coming here, the app doesn't work, so when you try to go in and workout you need to unlock the door with their 'Openpath' app and it doesn't work. The staff here would rather be playing card games from their phone than welcoming you. Poor staff members make it a negative gym experience for everyone. The way you do one thing is the way you do everything. I would recommend replacing staff completely or proving customer experience training. read more

I started going to a better gym a couple of years ago, but came back here on the GymPass program because I was running behind that day and wanted to work out someplace close. Also I'd gotten a "we want you back" email that said the place was under new ownership, and had a photo that looked like they'd completely renovated the place and installed new equipment (which is why, I had assumed, they raised their price from $10 to $25). Nope. When I arrived the place hadn't been renovated at all, except maybe with new paint. None of the equipment in the photo was there. The locker room was beat up, several locker doors were stuck shut, water in the showers was cold, coat hooks were pulled out of the wall, etc. The lights in the locker room are on sensors and would go out every time I stood still for a moment. Everything is dark gray, very depressing looking. On the floor, a group of men stood by the stairs, loudly swearing at each other. The machines are extremely outdated now and not in good repair. There have been some improvements. There is a vending machine in the locker room where you can get things like deodorant or a lock for your locker. The water in the water fountains is now nice and cold. Also the towels are plentiful now. Definitely not worth two and a half times what I paid before, though. All in all, I did not like working out here. There is a brand new gym opening soon around the corner so this place will really need to get their stuff together. Hopefully the new gym will be part of my GymPass... if so I'll definitely go there instead. read more

Around 8 pm yesterday a girl looked like she was overworked by her trainer. She obviously looked sick but kept being pushed. She threw up on the floor trying to make it to the trash can. We go back to the gym today around 12 and there's STILL a wet floor sign on the floor and throw up on the trash can. Looks like the workers don't care about sanitation. read more

Beware! So I signed up for a membership over two years ago. It was fine, 10.00 a month isn't bad, but when i tried to cancel they made it impossible. i tried to cancel over the phone, in person and online without success. about 8 months before leaving the state my credit card had fraudulent activity and was cancelled. I never updated it with charter because I forgot. Most businesses would have just canceled my membership after the first autorenewal was declined. NOT CHARTER, they autorenew the CONTRACT! Because I was in breach of contract they reported me to a credit agency over a 10.00 per month fee. Why not just cancel my membership? Because they want their money. FYI charter fitness is not requiring people to where face masks or take a sanitizing bottle and rag to wipe down equipment I'm a member who decided to start going to workout again and was disappointed when the person at the desk said face masks are not required. I told her I was under the impression that face masks were required when not using a device and she told me no face masks were required at any time. BUYER BEWARE! You'll cancel your membership, get confirmation from them that it's cancelled, but as soon as you move away they'll start charging you again. Im currently overseas and it costs me $3 / minute to call them. They have no email listed on their website either. These are shaddy business practices. Please dont support them! I do not recommend this gym. When it first opened it was clean and the staff were friendly. The customer service is terrible now. The bathrooms are regularly a mess. They often are out of mats and towels. The staff has been changing constantly which looks like they don't treat their employees well. read more

was charged $39 for an anual fee after COVID started. I was then told I couldnt cancel unless I went into the club which was closed . Once they were open by appointment only I was told by a manager that clients would not be charged while the club was closed. In August I was billed $39 which I thought was another anual fee. When I went into the club, which I was unaware was open, to inquire, the manager had told me the club reopened in July and that my August billing was for July and August combined . I told him I was unaware the club was Open and asked if there was anything He could do to give me a credit or a refund . He said there was nothing he could do and was unwilling to work with me to keep my long standing membership . He said corporate had sent clients an email stating the Covid situation regarding when they were going to reopen and billing/membership options. I never got such an email . He said I would have to contact corporate to see about a refund or credit , but he wouldnt give me an email or anyway to contact anyone other than to check their website. The website has no phone number or email just some basic contact page, which no one has responded to. A Google search came across a Corporate number which was disconnected . Theres listed billing number where I was told they are only a billing company . An Agent could see my billing but said she was not allowed to access,change, or issue refunds. She couldnt even tell me how to contact corporate only the local club. Their website states Charter Fitness is dedicated to provide exceptional service. This is not customer service , let alone exceptional if your customers can not get a hold of anyone other than local club managers. This is *** poor customer service if you ask me . Its the lets make it so difficult to get a hold of someone that people just get frustrated and give up on Pursuing a credit, refund or any other issue they have with us service plan . The gym is pretty good - nothing fancy, but a good number of weight machines and treadmills. Be very careful when paying for "Team Training" (small group sessions with a trainer) - $79/month plus the $10 gym fee is not good value! They make it very confusing with all these promotions, there's always some cheaper rate for a shorter period of time, but be sure to read the fine print. My wife thought she was signing up for $79 for three months - that's how the guy explained it - but it was actually the full rate, $79 EACH month for a 3-month period. Took us several months to notice what was happening on our credit card statement. When I complained to the manager that it was unclear, I got zero sympathy: "It was in the agreement that you signed." Apparently meaning, "We've got your money already, I don't give a d*mn if you're a satisfied customer or not." read more

I had to leave the gym due to a medical issue. I had no problems with the gym at riverside nor the staff. I had problems with corp. I cancelled the gym member first week of Feb 2019. I was charged my monthly member ship fee on the 20th of Feb. Called the 888 number they said they had no records of the cancelled membership. Sent them a copy of the canceled letter I received from riverside. March 2019 I get a call from corp stating they want a credit card to collect March's dues. Sent them the cancelation letter again. Corp took $20 in Feb 2019 even though I followed there cancellation process and did not refund me for Feb and they are still calling for March payment. Gyms ok, getting out of the contract impossible. They will keep charging you regardless of you cancelation paperwork. I had the bank stop payment and issue me a new credit card. All true, beware. Save everything. Next step BBB and maybe a lawyers letter. read more

Pretty good sized gym with lots of space and new equipment. Compared to other Charter Fitness locations I've visited, this location is definitively one of the better ones. They have all the must have equipment--benches squat rack, treadmills. They also have a lot of open spaces for for exercises and aerobics. Locker room is nice and clean with plenty of lockers. I came at an off peak time so I don't know how busy it gets after work. If this gym were closer to my house, I'd 100% make this my workout spot. Especially with the low membership fees. read more

So it's been a year and change since I joined Charter Fitness and for the most part the gym has met my expectations from when I first joined. Most of staff has turned over, which is to be expected I guess. The current staff are nice but are bit standoff-ish than the previous staff. Not that I'm expecting anything, but a simple hello at the front desk would be a nice added touch. The machines are still working, no dead treadmills or ellipticals which is always great, but the availability of clean towels can be a bit hit or miss these days. The cleanliness of the gym has fallen slightly, but it's MUCH better than previous gyms I've gone to. Not sure sure if they've cut back on cleaning staff but it seems the men's locker room can get untidy during peak hours after work. But as I said in my previous review for $10 a month I'm not expecting an FFC or East Bank Club level of service. For a quick workout after work or the weekends it's still the best deal in the area. read more

I've only been going to Charter as a member for 1 month now and I have no complaints. There is nothing fancy or over the top about Charter but it gets the job done for a cheap price. I enjoy the vast open concept with lofty second floor. The majority of my visits are during non peak hours when there are few people and towels are always available. I never use the locker room or showers so, I can't vouch on that. All in all, front desk attendants are friendly, check-in is easy via the mobile app with scanner code, and equipment isn't dirty. You really need to commit, that is true. But the down side of this place is, that it can get crowded and the work out machines are not free.

Currently working out here and I do think this is a great gym for $10 per month. There was some staffing issues because of some not so nice staff but I think it's great as of recently. I drive all around the Chicago area and I am always in different places so I enjoy that this is near the highway. However, I do wish there was more "lay down" area to do yogi etc. there's a room for this but it's only for private lessons :(. read more

Member since they opened. It's cheap in cost, great location, everything you need for a good work out, but they're slacking in cleaning for the past couple of months. The machines are covered in dust, some less than others. I have seen band aids on the floor this past week. It's really a bummer since everything else is great about this gym. I would not recommend this gym as to it being small. In the evening it gets packed and you can't get a decent workout because all the machines are being used. FYI this gym makes you sign a contract and so if you aren't happy with it you have to pay a termination fee to cancel membership. You get what you pay for. read more

I have been coming to Charter Fitness in North Riverside for almost a year. At the beginning I was surprise how clean and friendly the staff was. The manager Jose (I believe that was his name) and other trainers would always walk around and greet all members and sometimes even offer help without a fee. In the last month or so management changed and so did the gym. Now it's not as clean and there is always a shortage of towels or cleaning supplies. The staff sits around in the front instead of keeping the gym semi clean and stocked. Kinda disappointed considering how good it used to be. I understand the membership is a low price but as a manager and staff of a public place they should consider taking a little more pride in their work. read more

This gym is so AWESOME! Their stairmasters have fans and USB chargers, and there's plenty of them so I never have to wait! The membership is so cheap but they have great equipment and such a big well aired out lay out! So impressed with the staff too, every single employee I've interacted with has been unbelievable nice! I'm taking the time to write this review because I tried the hydro massage for the first time today and I feel like a new person!!! So smart to take 10 minutes after your workout to relax your muscles and stimulate blood flow, plus it feels just amazing! I wish I could give them 10 stars! I really like this gym. Plenty of machines, updated and working and a nice area upstairs to workout. Very nice and spacious ladies locker room. Compared to other charters I've been to, this one is my favorite. Cons: there never seems to be towels clean, they always take them at the same time the there are none left. I would suggest rotating between the towel stations so there are at least always some clean ones. read more

The facility has plenty of machines, free weights, and treadmills, and isn't terrible during peak hours (Monday around 5). However, it would be nice to get a "hello" as you scan in at the front desk. This kind of thing was absolutely mandatory when I worked at a gym. read more
