I used to go here all the time back when I was working in Boston. I was visiting Boston for a bit and decided to see how one of my favorite sandwich places has been doing while I've been gone! I haven't been to Chacarero in about 4 years. From first look, it doesn't look like the place has changed much! The menu is still the same but looks like they raised the prices a bit. I don't blame them given how much Boston's housing prices are increasing. I got the combo BBQ sandwich with their spicy sauce. Combo just meaning they serve both chicken and steak together in the sandwich although you have the option to just stick with one meat. The bread tastes just as good as I remembered! It's homemade and made fresh daily. The BBQ sandwich comes with muenster cheese, green beans, tomatoes, and roasted bell peppers. The two spreads in the sandwich are avocado and if you request the sandwich to be spicy, a jalapeno spread that definitely adds a kick! What really makes this sandwich special is the green beans! I've never had a sandwich with green beans before and honestly why would you? But the green beans in this sandwich add a slight crunch and gives the Chacarero sandwich it's uniqueness that stands out from other sandwich places in the Boston area. I never before have found an eatery I would consider going to 5 days a week for lunch! Chac's has been a downtown staple in Boston. I suggest you get a BBQ chicken or BBQ beef... OR a BBQ combo while you are there. The ingredients are fresh. There's no doubt about it. All of the bread and veggies are excellent. The meat is tender and NEVER fatty. I have never had to take a chewy piece out of my mouth and get totally grossed out by it. In about 7 years of eating Chac, I have NEVER once had a bad experience! The sandwich generally consists of ... choice of BBQ Beef or BBQ chicken or combo of both... served on fresh, round homemade bun/bread of sorts... next, piled with sliced tomato, roasted red peppers, fresh green beans (Don't be scared, they're awesome), salt, ground pepper, and topped with a dash of spicy spread. To balance the spice, the underside of the top of the bun is coated with avocado spread. That's pretty much the sandwich right there. This place is 5 stars. if you didn't give it 5 stars in a review, it's probably because the price can be a little higher than you might spend for a sandwich... unless you're living in Boston and not a tourist.... because Sam Lagrassa sandwiches are like $12 a pop. This place is awesome. I worked downtown for many years and it never disappointed. Yes, there's a line at peak lunchtime hours but it moves fast. Just go. You will thank me. Very specifically for the sandwiches. I would normally substitute stuff but with this sandwich you will want it basically the way it comes. It has green beans, an avocado spread, tomato, you pick the beef or chicken. I would say go BBQ which will come with roasted red peppers as well. You also let them know if you want it spicy which isn't overwhelming but if you want, get it on the side your first time. Please just try it if you ha e the opportunity. I go as often as I can. First time trying a Chilean sandwich and I must say I love it! The star of this restaurant are their sandwiches with a choice of bbq/non-bbq chicken or beef or a combination of both. The sandwiches are piled with the meat of your choice and topped with sliced tomatoes, roasted red peppers, an avocado spread, a green chili sauce and the most unusual but delicious veggies, steamed green beans! Ordering process is a bit different as you pay near the beginning of the line and then proceed to the sandwich counter where you can tell the person making the sandwich any modifications you'd like. I had the large BBQ chicken with everything and had half for lunch and will eat the other half later. As usual, their regular amount of spice caused my nose to run, but that's a price worth paying for food this good. Note: one of my colleagues had the "Chicken Salad," which we thought did not actually exist. Simple, delicious, and filling. The sandwiches are unassuming until you take a peek under the bun. The surprise ingredient is green beans, which gives the sandwich texture and a slight crunch. Buns are soft and not chewy. My favorite is the bbq steak sandwich, it's juicier than the chicken and more flavorful. A solid 4. A lot of the positive and negative reviews are extremely exaggerated. The sandwich itself is a freshly baked soft roll, avocado spread, sliced tomatoes, green beans, a small slice of muenster cheese, and your choice of thinly-sliced chicken or steak. At the end, they'll sprinkle a few dashes of some seasoning that is most likely Adobo on it. It is not spicy at all. I hate spicy food, so trust me when I say it's safe to eat. Anyone that says it made their eyes water probably has a pollen allergy. What I liked most about my sandwich was how light it felt while also being very filling (I got a "Large Original with Chicken"). The large is not much different from the small (might be 1 extra slice of chicken and 1 extra slice of tomato), so live a little and order a large. If your lunch is typically a glass of water and some carrots, then I'm sure you'll find Chacarero to be a taste bud orgy. For me, it was just taste bud first base. I might need to go to Kane's or Cookie Monstah later. I'll definitely be back as it's a popular destination in my office and I don't like eating alone. read more

Chacarero is one if those awesome lunch places that only sell a few things, but have perfected the execution. They sell a Chilean sandwich known as, not surprisingly, the "chacarero". They really broke the creativity bank on coming up with a name. FOOD: Most of what they sell is the chacarero sandwich, in one of several combinations: Chicken or beef (or both), and Original or BBQ. The original sandwich starts with your choice of meat, on a specially made bread. It's thinner than most loaves, crunchier on the outside but still soft on the inside. It's thicker (in texture) than a normal piece of bread. They add on tomato, green beans, muenster cheese, and some seasoning. If you are suspicious of green beans on a sandwich, stop right there. Sure, it looks like a parent trying to sneak vegetables into their kids' hamburger, but vegetables are good for you, stop running away from them. They add a crunch to the middle of the sandwich, where everything else is soft. They add a spicy sauce that gives it a little kick without becoming an eye-watering neusance. A lot of people like it spicier, just ask for "extra spicey" while they make it in front of you. A thin layer of avocado is spread to the top half of the bun. It acts almost like a mayonnaise, bringing the whole sandwich together, and controlling the heat of the spicey sauce. The BBQ sandwich is nearly the same, but it has slightly different seasonings and comes with cooked red peppers. This isn't "BBQ" as in what you usually think of, this is much more subtle. It's not smothered in any sort of sauce, it just seems to be seasoned a little differently, and comes with a slightly different configuration of vegetables. PRICE: Chacarero is a little in the expensive side, you'll spend around $9-$11. The small size is plenty of food, no need to get the large unless you're *really* hungry. THE LINE: The line will be long, but they go through it fast. Don't be deterred if the wait extends past the doorway. And PLEASE, don't shuffle your position in line, even if you are with your friends. There is no other place that I know of that serves these Chilean sandwiches. Then again, I've never bothered to look because Chararero does it so well, I have no desire to go elsewhere. The bread is freshly made and soft, perfect for the bbq chicken (my favorite and not the sauce laden thing you're thinking of), roasted peppers, avocado spread, cheese and believe it or not, string beans. It may sound strange but it totally works because the crunch gives it a wonderful textural contrast (no tomatoes for me please). With just the right amount of spiciness, this is sandwich that I crave all the time. Even with a line to the door today, it took less than 10 minutes total, in and out. Keep in mind, everything is cooked and made in front of you, the sandwich makers are all wearing gloves, they genuinely work like a well oiled machine. Only in the last six months have I started to explore the depth of Latin American cuisine. The cuisine of Mexico alone is so complex that its various states could provide a new meal every night for the rest of your life. Countries in South America also have their own unique culinary styles but the paradoxical beauty of Latin American cuisine is that it's built around just a few simple concepts and ingredients. Chileans and Peruvians infuse their food with complex flavor by patiently coaxing out the sweetness and fruitiness of peppers and chiles. These are the flavors that will form the basis of your food at Chacarero. It's a typical financial district lunch joint: Compact, with just a handful of tables, and a streamlined ordering service. You place your order with the hostess at the desk before taking your place in the line. The hostess was very helpful and patiently explained sizes and fillings while I scanned my menu. There is very little difference in diameter between the small and large sandwiches. Both are large and filling. I ordered a barbecue beef sandwich and Miss K ordered a spicy chicken salad. We took our place in the line, which moved fast, and then got to tell the servers what toppings we wanted. I asked for everything. On a sandwich, this consists of a sauteed pepper, an avocado spread with a bit of a bite, tomato slices, cheese, and green beans on top of the meat. Miss K's salad came with sliced hard-boiled eggs, sauteed pepper slices, and cherry tomatoes. I bit into the meat, intrigued by the presence of beans. It took a few seconds for the flavors to register but when they did, I began nodding with gusto, pumping my fist that I discovered this place without any effort. The beef was marinaded with a powerful yet subtle combination of ingredients. The avocado spread was creamy and slightly tangy. The pepper was soft and all its sweetness and depth had been unlocked. This made for a distinctly South American flavor profile. I wasn't a huge fan of the beans but I wouldn't omit them entirely. I'd just get them on the side instead of on the sandwich. But as understated as Chacarero's food can be, they can turn up the heat too. Miss K's chicken had a spicy jab to it that earned my respect. I couldn't even finish the sandwich and there was enough left for a substantial snack later. When I finished the sandwich, I thought to myself that it could use bolder flavors. I didn't give Chacarero any more thought after that . . . until the barbecue sandwich started to tease its way out of my subconscious a few days ago. I started to think about the sandwich every hour and now I'm craving it. I didn't even know I liked the food that much but I guess I must have because I'd sell my mother to the Yakuza for a bite of that beef sandwich right now. She's hot for her age. This was my first Chilean sandwich. It reminded me of a torta. You order and pay first and then give the receipt to the person behind the counter (pick up your soda on the way to the counter). This is where you can customize your sandwich by telling them what to leave out. At least three people assemble your sandwich. Person 1: Puts meat on bread Person 2: Puts cheese on bread, applies avocado spread and spicy sauce Person 3: Puts green beans on, sprinkles with salt and pepper * Grilled chicken & beef (combo sandwich, small $7.50, large $8.50): The big soft round bread was nice though not amazing. The meat is sliced into thinner pieces. The chicken was tender but plain. The beef was chewy and didn't taste like quality beef. I noticed that many people ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich - that seems like a better idea. I didn't realize the chicken would be so plain. I liked the veggies, avocado spread and the spicy secret sauce. I wish the sandwich were warmer (the cheese didn't melt). If it weren't for the size and homemade bread, I'd give this sandwich three stars. Get the small - it's huge. It has a chain feeling inside (not much character). There's a long line that greets you at the door, which isn't surprising since the sandwiches are so good, but don't be intimidated as the staff has their shit together and build these sandwiches fast. I prefer the BBQ combo. A mix of grilled BBQ chicken and steak piled high on fresh baked bread and topped with tomatoes, Muenster cheese, red peppers, avocado spread, hot sauce, and finally the green beans. At first look you'd think, "WTF is going on here?" But after your first bite, you quickly forget about the weird mixture of ingredients. Hell, you forget about pretty much everything in the world. It's just you and this Chacarero sandwich. Alone. In love. Warm embrace. Nom nom nom. They offer small and large sized sandwiches. I've ordered both sizes not really noticing much of a difference - they are both HUGE. Save your dollar and order the small - you'll be like a fat kid on the verge of throwing up just to get that last bite in. My only wish is that they had more seating. During nice weather I'd suggest walking down to Post Office Square with your lunch dates but during the winter, avoid rush hour lunch if you need a table. The staff was very accommodating in helping me choose since I wasn't sure what to get. In their down-time, they were very focused on the soccer game on the TV (note - this didn't take away from my experience, I watched it with them!) I ordered a Chilean beef sandwich which comes with muenster cheese, tomato, and green beans. I opted to forego avocado and hot sauce since I'm not a fan of either but if you like them, I'm sure they would be great. After getting tired of eating in Chinatown nearly every day for breakfast and lunch, I decided to explore a little more and get a taste of some Chilean food for lunch. A Chacarero is supposedly a Chilean style sandwich served on a round roll, with tomatoes, green beans, Munster cheese and some sort of spiced sauce that appears to be made from avocado. It's sort of like Chile's version of the Mexican Cemita. The first time I came here, I got a small Beef Chacarero of the Barbecue variety. It was pretty tasty, the bread was really soft and chewy, the beef was juicy and flavorful, the cheese was delicious, and the green beans were freshly cooked, and did not taste like they came out of a can. It also had a pretty decent spiced kick to the taste, making me want something cold to drink. I also had a small Original Combo sandwich, which consists of beef and chicken in one sandwich. This is a good choice in case you are indecisive and willing to spend a little more. The chicken was pretty tasty, and it was slightly less spicy compared to the Barbecue variant. I think the best choice is the small Original Combo sandwich if you want both beef and chicken, but if you are willing to spend a little extra money for more spice, the barbecue variant is also pretty good. As for other dishes, I came back one time and had a Beef Empanada. Empanadas are a bread stuffed with some sort of filling, like a calzone. I ordered one after work one night, and it came with a container filled some sort of a spiced up sauce that appears to be made from avocado. Inside consisted of chopped up beef and onion. Just eating it plain was sort of like eating a meat pie, but putting in that spiced sauce definitely gave it a spiced kick and made the empanada tastier. It's not a bad choice if you are not willing to spend more than $6 for a hearty and filling lunch. Service is extremely effective, so you can get your sandwich in less than 5 minutes. I had the small chicken sandwich today for lunch. It had chicken, avocado spread, muenster cheese and tomato on a roll. I found it to be a completely unremarkable sandwich. Everything about it was just ok. The bread lacked flavor and wasn't very fresh. I should note that my brother got the large version of my sandwich and there didn't seem to be much difference in the size. The employees were very friendly and quick. read more

I visited Boston and had to check out they hype. This is really one of the best sandwiches that I have ever had. I went around 2 so it wasn't too crowded (although I was shocked at the amount of people still eating then) and I was able to see what they were putting on my sandwich. Consisted of bread, chicken, munster cheese, hot sauce, avocados, and green beans. Weirdest part was the green beans but it all worked together! It was great. And I didn't need any chips or anything added as the sandwich definitely filled me up. My workmates put me on to this place back in 2008, and ever since I've been a loyal fan of the large grilled chicken sandwich, with extra hot sauce. The food is simple, but so delicious. They grill the chicken, place it on a well seasoned with hot sauce fresh giant bun, and then cover it with green beens (weird, but it works!) and as a smooth spread of avocado. Cut in half and serve. It's likely the fastest simplest thing you could order, and not feel that huge amount of regret from a big caloric intake. I'm sure it has calories, but it's not unhealthy in any way.
