The tub had jets which made for good recovery/relaxing after XC skiing. The bed was very comfortable; not too soft like a lot of BnB's nowadays, but not hard either. They only had a VHS player rather than a dvd player, but there was enough good channels available to keep us entertained. It was good having a kitchenette to make toast or hot chocolate, tea, instant coffee etc. Plenty of closet space but no dressers. But the closet had shelves. We lived out of our duffel bags anyway. Breakfast both days was really good. Doreen makes a superior fruit salad. Her frittata and french toast were yummy. She and Cole made nice breakfast companions (we were the only guests that weekend). The highlight of our stay was Clarence, their new cat, a Norwegian Forest cat. He was very friendly and entertaining. It broke our heart to say goodbye. We hope to be back again to ski more trails at nearby Pineland Farms.

We had a suite upstairs with a private sitting room, bathroom and kitchen. Throughout the day we could see the inn's ducks and chickens milling about from our suite. The suite is decorated in Americana and there were books and magazines for our perusal. Breakfast always started with a fresh fruit cup and sometimes with veggies right out of Rachel Lynn's garden! She is a marvelous cook and fed us French toast, a kale, broccoli and goat cheese scramble, blueberry pancakes and oven-baked eggs with tomatoes to be put on large English muffins. There was also ham and sausage, orange juice, coffee and tea. The property has two delightful cats, Jack and Jill, and if you want to pet them you can; however, Rachel Lynn is very sensitive to guests' wishes that the cats don't bother them. The George Perley House is a bit out of the way (well, we're from SF, so everything seems like a long drive to us), and we really liked it. One day we took a delightful and very easy hike up the road and into the forest nearby. My Mom found this B&B and it was perfect. The inn is quaint, 10 miles away from downtown Portland, Me (2 hours from Boston, Ma) and charming. Each couple had their own room, with all it's 1780's charm, it was cool to stay in an old New England home. Donna the inn keeper is so personable, helpful and welcoming. She made us eggs to order, waffles, coffee, OJ, fruit and rhubarb pie each morning. We were all able to have breakfast together each mornning. It was affordable, a central location and brought us all togeher. I would recommend this inn to anyone and hope to go back again soon. There are 4 rooms, 3 bathrooms, a communal parlor, breakfast room, communal room for snacks, with a fridge, etc.

Hotel prices are expensive in Maine in the summer, so I searched online for more affordable options and went with Quaker Tavern B&B because the reviews looked good and the location close enough to all the key places (airport, wedding site, attractions, etc.). We all had a great time having the house to ourselves. Donna was a wonderful host and accommodated our schedules for breakfast and everything else. She was attentive but not annoying and intrusive, so it's a great option if you want a place to stay where you can feel more independent and not waited on for every little thing. The breakfasts were great! Donna sources many of the ingredients locally, and everything was fresh and delicious. We had a great time talking with her during the meal - she is such a delight. I highly recommend this place, and if I visit the Portland/Falmouth area again I will definitely return to this place.

My only complaint is that the bedside lighting in our room isn't sufficient for reading. Mood lighting ~ check. Reading ~ you'll need to use your phone or a flashlight. Go to impress parents or similar if you are a college student. For quality and price, based on our experience, would not do again. Overcooked eggs, grudging portions, mix and match plateware that just confounds (bacon and eggs in a bowl - really? but only for one person in the party?). The menu is also misleading. The fabled "hash of the day" turned out to be just a pile of ordinary unremarkable overcooked and unseasoned home fries. The same side everyone else had for free, but costing some part of the wallet-stretching $21 in the context of the all-in "165" breakfast - two overcooked over-easy eggs (no seasoning), a slice of thin sourdough bread cut in two, a pile of indifferent home fries and two of the smallest pieces of bacon you can imagine. $8-12 in any self-respecting diner in the country, and typically made with far more care and flavor. When asked how plain ordinary home fries were a "hash of the day" when they were also unmentioned sides for other dishes, the waitress shrugged and said "it's a KIND of hash. We call that hash here." Touche. Should have asked more questions. And the toast is a single piece of seemingly storebought sourdough bread cut in half (no evidence here, just disappointment being expressed). No substitution, no extras. Pretty much no butter, either. Another member of the party had the blueberry pancakes, Thick and heavy, and unremarkable, once again. Any diner does it better - for half the price. Timing was a serious issue too. The dining room was somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 full. 3-4 tables in other words. Still took well over 45 minutes to get food. Watched 2 pairs of other diners come, order, eat, pay and leave as we waited, Food came cool with no explanation or apology for the long wait. Small complaints perhaps, but at this price, they are making bold claims and utterly failing to match up. Breakfast should be a lay-up for places like this. The ingredients cost almost nothing and the work involved is strictly short-order, simple, fast-turn work in a relatively uncrowded dining room. No reason to go light on ingredients or on flavors. Breakfast is an easy meal to wow in aplace like this, and New England has traditions to uphold - and yet the establishment clearly did not see the point in putting in the effort to match their prices, decor, or location. The capper was watching the tables cleared by a surly teenager in stained board shorts and stained tshirt and sneakers with unwashed hair in a beautiful dining room. The young man clomped in and would withdraw 1-2 plates at a time before stomping out, taking over ten minutes to clear a single table. Overpriced and under-quality. It's for tourists. Beautiful building, though.

In retrospect, I would have missed a treat had we not stayed at the Brewster House Bed & Breakfast on Main Street in Freeport, Maine. Owned and run by Kelleigh and Dave, the latter is a trained chef, and the former is a consummate professional in caring for their customers. We also had the pleasure of meeting one of their children and heard a couple of hilarious stories about some oil changing mishaps. Turns out, the breakfast part of the B&B is my element. Instead of one long table, which some B&Bs provide, Brewster House offers smaller tables for two or in our case, tables together to accommodate three guests. We were all seated in one room, a dark blue-walled space with white antique dishes and a moose head as decoration, close enough to talk, yet separated enough to have private conversations. All of us guests chatted and laughed and shared stories as Kelleigh deftly served and described each day's three courses. Dave occasionally looked out, but seemingly a bit shy for compliments stayed in his kingdom of that wonderful kitchen. Here's to Dave who shared some of his culinary acumen in the forms of shirred eggs with fresh greens, firm peaches donned with whipped topping, blueberry-kissed French toast, and so very moist waffles with dreamy homemade syrup. The bath towels were of good, heavy quality, which is important to me and the lotions and soap with little images of a Maine village were nice touches. Being from Florida, we weren't certain if we were dreaming at night when air conditioning was not needed. The property is several decades old and one can hear that when ascending and descending stairs, but they were sturdy so that's all that really matters. I sat on the multi-colored rockers on the porch at the side a time or two and absorbed the peace that I felt at Brewster House. I may never visit Maine again, but Brewster House Bed & Breakfast is etched into my memory as one of my favorite things about my first visit to Freeport, Portland and surrounding quaint towns in Maine. If you ever plan on visiting the area, give this historic location a try.
