I was a little skeptical about this place at first, but the food is great. I usually get their Vegetable Egg Foo Young, Curry Chicken and Lemon Chicken. I love fish and rice so I tried their Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice, and it was decent. Although the place itself looks like it needs a massive makeover, the people that own this place are very friendly. There is a fortune to be made in A2 for the person who can bring good Chinese to the area. I tried this place because it was the highest rated that I hadn't tried. The others were all ordinary at best. I held out hope this would be different. In a sense it was - but worse. This place is the McDonalds of Chinese food. Bland and salty, hoping you don't think too hard about what you're actually eating. Utterly underwhelming. I've tried and tried to find a Chinese restaurant I can put faith in, but it simply doesn't exist in this town. The truth is, if you're craving Chinese food, order something else. This place has very authentic Chinese food for a very reasonable price. They offer $3.99 lunch specials! And the food is just like what my Cantonese parents would cook at home. My favorites are their Cantonese noodle dishes. The noodle is very tasty and crunchy. Their sesame tofu is pretty good too, more on the greasy side though. Come here if you want to have some nice food for take out / delivery. Try not to eat in the restaurant, because it looks kinda ghetto and might affect your appetite. read more

I wanted to like it- I really did - and thought I would after reading the reviews on here, but it was in the running for the worst Chinese food I have ever, ever had. And that is saying something. The ginger and garlic tofu dish looked promising. Until I realized the tofu was thickly breaded and fried. The moo shoo was okay- but hardly any pork and the pancakes were dry and crumbly. The spring roll was something I never need to try again, uninspired at BEST...but the dumplings... The dumplings were the absolute worst. I can forgive any Chinese food place if they have good dumplings, so I was looking forward to them. They were so thickly breaded I couldn't do it- I peeled off the breading, dipped the meat into the sauce and wanted to choke the second I put it in my mouth- I'm not sure what it was, but it was NOT pork. It had consistency and texture worse than any hot dog- gross The ONLY reason it gets 2 stars is how friendly they are. We will never be back to spend a dime in that place. For me it was just ok. We ordered the beef mushroom entree and kung pao chicken. The offspring got chicken nuggets, which were of the grocery store freezer aisle variety, but no surprise there. We moved to the area this year and tried several Chinese restaurants (for those days you just don't wanna cook - there were several in the beginning. Ha). Chan's quality, taste and friendly quick delivery made it out go to for take out Chinese. (Even when we pay a higher delivery fee bc we live pretty far away from the restaurant.) We tried Chan's for dinner twice. We really wanted to like it, as the family that runs it is so friendly. Alas, friendly can only go so far. A consistent problem with Chinese restaurants, in my opinion, in the huge, non-descriptive menu. There is no way to tell what a dish entitled Ginger and Garlic shrimp will consist of. Sure, there should be some flavorful shrimp, what what about the vegetables, When asked, you will be told Chinese vegetables. It seems like they have a licence to throw in whatever they have overstocked that day, with no consistency for the customer. So, our first dinner from Chan's was pretty unremarkable. We decided to try it again, and order simple things we were familiar with at other chinese establishments. The Ginger and Garlic Shrimp dinner consisted of only 5 medium shrimp-even worse, two of those shrimp were broken in half, so there really were only 4 shrimp. As far as vegetables, one would hope for some mushrooms, red pepper, onion, maybe even some brocolli and carrots. That is not what we got. It was a sad mix of onion, celery, those little corn cob things, water chesnuts, more celery, and some other unidentified colorless vegetable matter-possible large slices of bok choy?! 99% of the dish was totally worthless. I ordered delivery through their website. First thought: they should add some description, maybe pictures to their online menu. Took me a long time to figure out what 'mi fung' and 'her fung' refer to, because that is not how other people spell those terms online. Anyway, I ordered a bunch of food to try. The good: the roasted duck and crab and cheese rangoons were up to standard. Everything else though was pretty bad. The her fung noodle soup with wontons was bland. The eggroll was just not tasty. The 'steamed dumplings' (they should add a bit of detail. Chinese name? Ingredients?) really confused me though. The dumpling walls were really, really thick and dense and chewy. I could say so many good things about Chan's Garden. I have enjoyed all the food I have ever gotten from here and it is well priced, especially their lunch deals. However, the main thing I love about Chan's is the customer service. Even though my family probably only eats here about once a month, they recognize us every time. Whenever I go in they ask about how my parents are doing and are always so kind to me. I have recommended this place to many of my friends. Tonight the delivery person not only pushed their way into a secure apartment complex, they also walked into our apartment! The delivery was for a few doors down. I called and spoke with the owner, who has been warned by apartment management to not bully their way into the building, and he screamed in Mandarin at not just me but the girl on the phone. We order from there frequently, so I asked for $10 off our next order. He refused. So on Monday I'm reporting the restaurant to the BBB. Too bad because we really did like their food. Sitting at home alone with two very friendly painters in my house, I had the sudden urge for Chinese food. I had never tried Chan's Garden before, and I must say I wasn't disappointed. Their online ordering function was invaluably helpful, seeing that giving directions at a Chinese restaurant has always been a challenge. The service was friendly, efficient, and the food arrived after just 30 minutes. That's a lot quicker than most other places, I must say. The Chicken Fried Rice was absolutely amazing, smoky and yet sticky feeling. The General Tso's chicken was...meh. I'll give it a 8/10. A bit dry, it was. As we are pretty new to this side of Ann Arbor we have been trying out Chinese restaurants in the area to find one that's not too far. This is the second one we tried, after the first turning out not so great. This one is very close and with all the great reviews, we were hoping it would be our new go to place. Unfortunately, I will not be buying food from here again and wouldn't recommend it to friends. We ordered delivery and it was decently quick and the service was good. The first few minutes after getting it seemed like we had found our new Chinese place - but after having the box/food in the room for less than five minutes I walked out of the room to grab a drink and when I walked back in it became quickly apparent that it reeked of old cigarette smoke. I figured it was just the box it was brought in and that maybe the delivery guy smoked in the car on the way over, no big deal. This was not the case, as I took the box and threw it out in the trash right away and the smell still filled the room. It continued to get worse and I couldn't take it (We don't smoke and old smoke smell makes me feel sick) so I took all the food out of the containers and put them in our own tupperware and I threw away every packaging that had the smell - and the room still smells. It was so bad that even with air freshener and two windows open to ventilate it still took a while to air out. This doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of the food itself - the dishes we ordered were okay, not great. The hot and sour soup is way too sour, on the verge of inedible. The crab rangoon was just cream cheese in the wonton wrapper, not bad but nothing special. The egg rolls were good. I guess I'd just say the food was average, not amazing, not horrible. I had read a previous review about the smoke issue and I figured it was just someone sensitive to it or a fluke, but I won't be ordering again from this place because it was definitely true. I have no idea how the in store service is, but after this experience I don't think I'm going to be trying it. read more

This was the worst Chinese food experience I've ever had. I order General Tso's chicken, crab rangoons, and an egg roll. First thing I noticed was that everything was smothered in grease. Just setting the chopsticks on my lap got grease on my jeans...awesome. The crab rangoons were underdone and tasted like the crab was bad or just on the verge of. The General Tso Chicken tasted like it came from a sauce you can get in the grocery store and there was a random piece of broccoli in it. Makes you really wonder about their food safety standards. Upon biting my first piece of chicken, I almost choked on TWO chicken bones!! It came with white rice. How can you go wrong with white rice? By somehow leaving a STAPLE in it. Seriously, I almost took a bite of a staple. Fortunately, my fiance saw it and stopped me. The only thing that was decent was the egg roll, and that's if you really dabbed off all the grease.. After eating those 3 or 4 bites, I got extremely nauseous and spent the next 10 minutes puking in the bathroom. I dont understand how they have such good reviews. Find somewhere else to eat unless you like plain, bland, cold food. The soup tastes dirt and vegetable water. No taste what so ever. I've ordered delivery twice and each time it arrived faster than the estimated time even though it was around dinner time. I was pleased with the food, although it's more expensive than I'm used to. (That might be general Ann Arbor inflation, tho.) Their crab rangoon is crispy, not soggy, their hot & sour soup comes with crispy noodles (sometimes takeaway/delivery doesn't give you those), and the entrees are decent. Discovered this place about 4 years ago and it's been my go-to place for Chinese food ever since...it's a little bit off campus but every bit worth the drive to get it. (they even deliver if you don't feel like driving). I have yet to find a place on campus that is as good as Chan's. It's a small family owned business and the prices are great! I have had Szechuan chicken lo mein and chicken silver noodles. Both were pretty much exactly as described to me and were really good. I like spicy food and they were adequately spicy. The delivery was quick and cheap. I also really like Gourmet Garden in Ann Arbor and I think that Chan's compares favorably to them. read more
