I have been going to Lan City since they were a relatively new joint in Ypsilanti. I am so happy that they expanded into their spot in Ann Arbor, and their food is just as amazingly delicious!!! It's my favorite restaurant in town :) From my many visits to Lan City, I've tried a number of things, so I'm just going to list out the must-gets. - Indian Roti ($6.50): you've GOT to get the Indian Roti. It's wonderfully buttery and flaky. It comes with this thin curry sauce which is nice, but I prefer it with straight soy sauce! But try combining it with many things, you can't go wrong! - Homemade Scallion Pancake ($6.75): another bready item that is a must-get!! They are the best scallion pancakes I've had. They always come out hot, a bit fluffy but not overwhelmingly so, chewy, crispy, a bit flaky, and delicious. - Laksa ($14.50): the fact that you can get this giant bowl of hand-pulled noodles with a super flavorful broth and tons of add-ins for $14, in this economy?? Yup, mhmmm, sign me up. We get the laksa every single time and it has never missed! - Brisket & Tendon Soup ($13.25): another giant and delicious bowl of hand-pulled noodle soup that I would highly recommend. Compared to the Laksa, the broth is much lighter and clear, and the add-ins are a hearty serving of tender brisket and tendon!! - Singapore Rice Noodle ($14.95): this is just really fun to eat. I love the texture of warm vermicelli, and I love curry flavors. This dish feels like something you'd bring to a party. - Char Kway Teow ($14.50): bombbbbbbbbb. C.K.T is similar to Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles, but I think it comes out on top. I would highly recommend ordering. And it's such a large portion that you will definitely have leftovers. While I only listed off a handful of items, everything I've had at Lan City has been good at the bare minimum. We love consistency in quality!!!! And you just cannot beat the VALUE. Value makes everything taste better. Some other great things about Lan City - Their Ann Arbor location is quite large, so there's plenty of seating. - Service is kind and no-nonsense. I have been to the Ypsilanti location many times first time at Ann Arbor location. The inside is very nice. Unlike Ypsilanti location you order at the counter you than find a table and they provide a buzzer that will go off when your food is ready for pickup at the counter. This location offers various bubble teas the Thai iced tea was very good and the boba was very soft. The beef lo mein was some of the best, I have had you can tell the noodles are fresh and love the char flavor you taste from the wok. My wife had the Dan Dan noodles with pork very good flavor, just remember to mix the noodles as the sauce is at the bottom. To start we got the pan fried dumplings the bread is very good and fresh but the inside is very average no juice or anything inside the dumpling. The server was so very cool, she sat on the booth's corner & helped us narrow dining choices. I finally got to try Lan City Noodle Bar! I knew they had a location in Ypsilanti but realized this Ann Arbor spot existed recently while driving back to Grand Rapids from Detroit. Nate and I stopped in and warmed up with some delicious noodles. The menu is pretty large and I wish we could've tried more things. I went with the signature sliced beef noodle soup, and Nate ordered the dan dan noodles. You order at the counter and they give you a buzzer. Our food was ready quickly and I was surprised at the massive portions. The soup broth was really clear but savory and delicious. There was a generous portion of sliced beef, which was a bit fatty but I loved it. I added some of the chili oil at the table which gave it a nice kick. The dan dan noodles were some of the best we've had - super savory with a bit of that tingly numbing spice while not being overpowering. The noodles in both dishes were the perfect texture. The only thing we were slightly disappointed about was the egg on the dan dan noodles - I was expecting a soft boiled egg but it was hard boiled. Still, it didn't detract from the overall dish and we'd definitely get it again. We also tried their milk tea boba, which was perfect. The space is large and had lots of seating. The playlist was great, service was quick and friendly, and the prices were pretty great - only $13 per dish for a lot of food! Rounding up from 4.5 stars and to be frank, the only reason I hesitated was because I ordered the Chong Qing noodles which were described as "fiery, spicy infused with Sichuan peppercorns" and while incredibly flavourful, I didn't get any of the numbing-level spice I was hoping for. To give an idea, my mom was able to eat it and she practically finds milk too spicy. I thought it was a little pricy at first but then realised 1) the portions are massive and 2) the prices on Grubhub are higher than at the actual restaurant. I paid $15.95 and after cross-comparing, found that the dish itself is only $12.95 when you eat there. And as mentioned the amount of broth they give you is almost ludicrous - it was like a 32 ounce container. IMO the dish is definitely big enough to be shared. I've been to Lan City in Ypsi many times over the years, but I never had the chance to try out this new location until now! Instead of sit-down service, as with the original location, this Lan City Noodle offers counter service in a spacious, updated space. Ordering was really easy, and we chose two of our favorites. Hot Pepper Oil Noodle ($13.25) - The rendition at Lan City Ypsi is fantastic, with a fragrant, tangy, garlicky, exceptionally savory and slightly sweet taste that punches you right in the mouth on the first bite. Super delicious and is the reason I always come back to this dish. The rendition served at this Lan City location seems to be a bit different, with the barest hint of spice despite a red-orange pool of shimmering oil and absolutely no mala mouth numbing elements as promised in the menu description. The dish is served with biang biang noodles - irregular and about 1 inch in width, made in the window to the kitchen right behind the order counter. You can hear the thunk of the dough as it's being pulled. The thickness is a little inconsistent, with most being on the thinner side and being a bit overcooked, reducing the amount of chew. The thicker pieces retain the chewy texture, but on average, the noodles are a bit overdone. It's an imperfect canvas for the symphony of flavors this dish has to offer, although the crags do allow for the minced garlic, oil, and very savory broth to cling on with each noodle slurp. For being a mostly dry noodle dish, I found there to be too much soup at the bottom of the bowl. The dish also includes a lot of sliced, blanched bok choy, cooked perfectly. There must be at least two heads of bok choy included - additional veggies are always welcome! My review may sound a bit critical, but this is still a dish I would come back for time and time again. (4/5) Chongqing Noodle Soup ($13.25) - This dish has a mild spice that hits the back of the throat. The broth is smoky and fragrant but isn't nearly as spicy as other Chongqing noodles I've had and again is almost entirely missing the mala brought on by Sichuan peppercorns. The initial spoonful of soup captures the thick layer of chili oil floating on the soup, but it then transitions into a savory, but extremely salty, stock underneath. The noodles here are long and cooked perfectly, with a nice chew as you eat. If you slurp, you risk flinging drops of oil everywhere. There's a couple of leaves of blanched bok choy, a bit of preserved vegetables, soybeans, diced garlic, and tender ground pork adorning the dish, but when you mix them in, they get a bit lost in the soup physically and flavor-wise. It's still very tasty, but if you're looking for a fiery hot, mouthnumbing soup, this is not it. I wonder if it's toned down a bit? (4/5) One of my favorite chili crisps is sold at the Ypsilanti Lan City Noodle location. It's spicy, super fragrant, complex from multiple chilis, with a wok hei smokiness. The one served here in the dishes and provided at the table has most of the same characteristics, but the spiciness is a bit muted. In fact, I went home afterwards and tried out some of the chili crisp from the pint I bought last year. There's a heat that starts mildly but builds up over 30 seconds. I didn't feel that heat at all from the batch in the restaurant. I wonder why? While this location of Lan City Noodle rates a bit lower than the original location, I still highly recommend eating here. The food, although not as spicy as required, still captures the extremely fragrant and savory elements as expected of the dishes. In fact, I may actually choose this location over the original in the future simply because the ordering experience is superior. Bathrooms - Two larger bathrooms with multiple stalls. I had high hopes for Lan City because of its extensive menu of Asian soups, but I was disappointed with my Laksa. Parts of my soup were lukewarm as if it was not heated appropriately in the microwave. The broth was too light; it needed to be thicker. My mom got the Chong Qing Noodle Soup and she said there wasn't enough noodle and bok choy in proportion to the broth. The noodles are handmade in the kitchen, which is fine. The problem is how they assemble the dish and the rest of the ingredients added to the noodles. The Lan City in Ypsilanti has higher reviews, so I may give that location a try, but I wouldn't eat at the Ann Arbor location again. read more

You can get beef broth or vegetable broth. However, when I went today, the clerk didn't ask so be sure to specify what you want. This isn't a big deal to me, but it could be for folks with specific dietary concerns. Food is flavorful and piping hot because they make it fresh! I also got the watermelon slushie, size-wise I think it was 16 oz at least - it was yummy. Service: you'll get a buzzer which let you know when to come up and get your food. Ambiance: I went in early afternoon. Plenty of places to sit. Some places hadn't been cleaned off yet, but that is restaurant life for you! I had the Peking Sauce with Pork. This was pretty good! I think the sauce is a tad bland, and kinda...fatty? I had to put some vinegar in there to balance it out/add some flavor. It also came out a tad lukewarm; wish it was hotter. But overall, noodles were a good strong texture characteristic of hand pulled noodles. I tried my boyfriend's Dan Dan Sauce with Pork; I think this one's sauce was much more flavorful, albeit spicy. Would recommend getting this one more. It's a quick serve kinda vibe: you go in, you order, they give you one of those buzzer thingies that buzzes when your food is ready.
