Lan City Pan-Fried Noodle with Shrimp
Tonia S.

Good spot that's close to UMich campus. Easy to walk to in between classes. I've come here a handful of times and the portion sizes are consistently fair while the orders are made fresh. I did have an issue on one visit where I picked up and didn't realize I received the wrong order until I was back at home. Always check before leaving!

Noodles aplenty. Bold, spicy flavor. If I lived in Ann Arbor I'd come often. But sadly, I don't. Lots of different noodle dishes to choose from and the food is fresh and flavorful with hand pulled noodles.

Delicious noodles! We stopped in for dinner and were able to get a table immediately. We got the pan friend pork buns, scallion pancakes and pork & leek dumplings appetizers- all were so good. I got the Seafood noodle soup, tons of flavor and a great portion size. The staff were friendly and helpful when we had questions. The food is pricy but almost everyone had leftovers. Highly recommend!

Lan City spread! (sorry for the bad crop, but it's about the food anyway)

I have been going to Lan City since they were a relatively new joint in Ypsilanti. I am so happy that they expanded into their spot in Ann Arbor, and their food is just as amazingly delicious!!! It's my favorite restaurant in town :) From my many visits to Lan City, I've tried a number of things, so I'm just going to list out the must-gets. - Indian Roti ($6.50): you've GOT to get the Indian Roti. It's wonderfully buttery and flaky. It comes with this thin curry sauce which is nice, but I prefer it with straight soy sauce! But try combining it with many things, you can't go wrong! - Homemade Scallion Pancake ($6.75): another bready item that is a must-get!! They are the best scallion pancakes I've had. They always come out hot, a bit fluffy but not overwhelmingly so, chewy, crispy, a bit flaky, and delicious. - Laksa ($14.50): the fact that you can get this giant bowl of hand-pulled noodles with a super flavorful broth and tons of add-ins for $14, in this economy?? Yup, mhmmm, sign me up. We get the laksa every single time and it has never missed! - Brisket & Tendon Soup ($13.25): another giant and delicious bowl of hand-pulled noodle soup that I would highly recommend. Compared to the Laksa, the broth is much lighter and clear, and the add-ins are a hearty serving of tender brisket and tendon!! - Singapore Rice Noodle ($14.95): this is just really fun to eat. I love the texture of warm vermicelli, and I love curry flavors. This dish feels like something you'd bring to a party. - Char Kway Teow ($14.50): bombbbbbbbbb. C.K.T is similar to Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles, but I think it comes out on top. I would highly recommend ordering. And it's such a large portion that you will definitely have leftovers. While I only listed off a handful of items, everything I've had at Lan City has been good at the bare minimum. We love consistency in quality!!!! And you just cannot beat the VALUE. Value makes everything taste better. Some other great things about Lan City - Their Ann Arbor location is quite large, so there's plenty of seating. - Service is kind and no-nonsense. You can see that everyone is working hard, and I hope they are getting compensated in kind! - They now have sushi?!? And looking at the menu, the prices are great. Something to try next time. If it wasn't abundantly clear, I highly recommend Lan City. If you can, go!

Delicious food & good portions! Plenty of sunshine and seating inside, plus free wifi. Service was good and food came out pretty fast. We got the hot pepper oil noodles, garlic cucumber salad, and the mini soup dumplings. The noodles were delicious and great for 2 hungry people, the cucumber salad was solid but dare I say had too much garlic (and I love garlic), and the soup dumplings were delicious (especially with black vinegar). I added chili crunch to the cucumbers but I don't think they use Lao Gan Ma like I'd hoped.

Char Kway Teow (C.K.T.)
Trinity F.

The Char Kway Teow was way too sweet, wish it was more savory. It was also hard to find a table because there were so many trays and bowls left out, we had to move them somewhere else ourselves to make space. Might come back to try another dish because maybe it happens to be this dish I wasn't happy with.

Pork Ribs Noodle Soup

Good place for savory Chinese soup/sauce noodles. Cheap prices and huge portions, most of us could not finish. Good service, and lots of seating. Only complaint is that the scallion pancakes are too salty.

Tofu Noodle Soup (Knife) Spicy Garlic w/ Black Vinaigrette Cold Noodle (Knife)

Lan City is a solid noodle place! I've ordered the vegan Tofu soup noodle as well as the Chili Garlic noodles. Both are pretty good but on the saltier side (noodles, obviously), nothing too crazy. Food comes out really quick for a main meal. Pretty good for vegetarians looking for something with a little flavor close to campus!

Laksa w/ Seafood Noodle Soup (gluten free with rice noodles)
Han N.

I appreciate that they have a gluten free menu, and their portions are huge! The rice noodles are the best I've had in a while! The staff was very kind and patient when it came to answering my questions about the gluten free options. We ordered at the counter, then received a buzzer that would notify us when our order was ready. There are containers by the counter if you want to take any of your food home. I've also ordered the chicken noodle soup for my boyfriend when he was sick, and it came very well packaged.

I have been to the Ypsilanti location many times first time at Ann Arbor location. The inside is very nice. Unlike Ypsilanti location you order at the counter you than find a table and they provide a buzzer that will go off when your food is ready for pickup at the counter. This location offers various bubble teas the Thai iced tea was very good and the boba was very soft. The beef lo mein was some of the best, I have had you can tell the noodles are fresh and love the char flavor you taste from the wok. My wife had the Dan Dan noodles with pork very good flavor, just remember to mix the noodles as the sauce is at the bottom. To start we got the pan fried dumplings the bread is very good and fresh but the inside is very average no juice or anything inside the dumpling. The table is stocked with chili oil and black vinegar so this helps bring some more flavor.

Chili oil noodles with shrimp

The noodles did not taste that fresh. I've been to the Ypsi location which I thought was better. I got the chili oil noodles with shrimp. It was expensive but the portion size was huge. It was heavy on the oil and garlic without having much flavor.

1A: Signature sliced beef noodle soup

I finally got to try Lan City Noodle Bar! I knew they had a location in Ypsilanti but realized this Ann Arbor spot existed recently while driving back to Grand Rapids from Detroit. Nate and I stopped in and warmed up with some delicious noodles. The menu is pretty large and I wish we could've tried more things. I went with the signature sliced beef noodle soup, and Nate ordered the dan dan noodles. You order at the counter and they give you a buzzer. Our food was ready quickly and I was surprised at the massive portions. The soup broth was really clear but savory and delicious. There was a generous portion of sliced beef, which was a bit fatty but I loved it. I added some of the chili oil at the table which gave it a nice kick. The dan dan noodles were some of the best we've had - super savory with a bit of that tingly numbing spice while not being overpowering. The noodles in both dishes were the perfect texture. The only thing we were slightly disappointed about was the egg on the dan dan noodles - I was expecting a soft boiled egg but it was hard boiled. Still, it didn't detract from the overall dish and we'd definitely get it again. We also tried their milk tea boba, which was perfect. The space is large and had lots of seating. The playlist was great, service was quick and friendly, and the prices were pretty great - only $13 per dish for a lot of food! There's plenty of street parking around the restaurant as well as a parking garage nearby. I can't wait to come here again the next time I'm in town.

Cockroach

We ordered duck soup and some other noodle entrée from this place a few days before Thanksgiving and my wife found a cockroach in her duck soup. Absolutely disgusting. I took a picture of it and everything. We will never step foot in this place again.

The host was responsive. The food came out of the kitchen incredibly fast. It had that hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant feel. But that's about it. That's the 2 stars. The hot and sour soup got the taste balance and broth right but the ingredients were a disappointment, too much tofu, too much egg, not enough wood ear and/or black mushrooms, scandalously few shredded bamboo shoots (which also clearly came from a can). The wok hei for the mu shu pork was not good; too greasy and again, the ingredients were really inadequate (way too many onions, zero cabbage, scant protein). The hoisin sauce clearly came out of a bottle (way too sweet and flat) and here's the death blow - thick flour tortillas, not those thin Mandarin pancakes. I mean, the thinness of the pancake is the whole point - it is NOT a "Chinese burrito" (a phrase that is an insult to burritos, mind you). The last dish was ma po tofu. For me, a good ma po tofu is all about flavor balance - do you understand between straight up heat from the chili and the numbing of Sichuan peppercorns? They do not understand, this was so overwhelmingly peppercorn that it seemed pretty apparent that someone just equated "hot" with peppercorn and then added chili oil. Again, scant protein. I usually give a place a couple tries because anyone can have an off day. I won't be back. This is a kitchen quality problem, not an off day.

What's worse is it's a hidden gratuity that you may never notice. Pro Tip: Unbelievable someone has to be told this; check every item on your bill. Always look for posted signs as you initial enter; especially near the cash register. Also read the menu thoroughly. Normally, I wouldn't complain too loudly about an automatic 18% gratuity. What if today's service was lousy? It's no longer a tip, but a service charge. The biggest problem is not informing customers in advance. Maybe illegal? Well, IYKYK. I hate their dining room and probably always will. It's just like a boring, drab, dull office building cafeteria with no colour and nothing on the walls. Just an opinion. Always wanted to vent that. When it comes to customer service they are smiling, friendly and accommodating. Things have become a tad slow since pandemic. Maybe it's yet one more staffing shortage? The food here is very good. I encourage you to try the duck. Friends swear by the Wuxi Ribs. They did just raise the price to $22; but remember to add the 18% so that entree is now $26. I wonder if being a family O/O business, all tips stay in the building. Isn't that just a hidden price increase? 11/24

Their online menu does not have the pictures that the in store one has and woowee it is a lot of choices of noodles! Amongst the 4 of us, we ordered the pork tip noodle, the Peking pork (zhajiangmian), hot oil wide noodle, beef tendon knife noodle. YUM! The noodles are handmade, handpulled and you can customize the shape and thickness you want! The portions as you can see are massive and the prices are very reasonable! $14/$15 a bowl! My pork rib tips were too tough but still seasoned. I would say their Peking style zhajiangmian is pleasantly less authentic and I liked this version better than the original! It included a braised full egg, and not too much of the cloyingly sweet and intense sauce. We ordered and within 2 minutes we were served fresh bowls of piping hot noods. Our server was efficient, warm, knowledgeable and bilingual. She said I looked like a popular Hong Kong singer, like OMG what a cute compliment! There was convenient parking and it was really close to my friend's house. Highly recommend!

Now on to the food! My favorite thing we ordered was the Leshan Beef soup, so comforting, warming, and flavorful! Xiao, the owner, was kind enough to teach us how to best enjoy it which was to first take a sip of the broth, have some of the veggies, then dip the beef into the chili powder. The billionaires fried rice was unfortunately a bit under seasoned but at least the portion size was quite generous. The mapo tofu was very authentic and the numbing spice they used was top notch, although Xiao did mention that they would hopefully be moving towards using a more tender cut of tofu than the medium/hard tofu they're currently using which I think would be delightful.
