My father used to tell me that a lot of "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants have better food than their far more expensive counterparts. This is really true of Chan's Garden, a small family-run restaurant on Ann Arbor's West-side on Liberty west of Stadium. It's so small that I drove past it and had to turn around and go back in the other direction. I decided to order Cantonese Beef Chow Mein with noodles for lunch. It was very delicious and the portions were large. I really enjoyed it and had an egg roll to go with lunch special. Likewise, the service was fantastic, and the owner really makes you feel at home and special at the same time. I will definitely visit here again. The soy sauce used is Wei-Chuan dark, and tastes great. Usually, many of the Chinese Restaurants in the area use Kikkoman's, but it's nice to find something more authentic. I have heard from a few people that they have great takeout as well. I will have to try that sometime. read more

First of all, I'm Chinese, so I ought to know. I found this little place tonight on the way home. They have a surprisingly large menu and the owner and his wife cook behind the counter with remarkable finesse. They have really fine youtiao 油條 , reminiscent of those from my late parents' home town of Shanghai (BTW, the owners come from southern China near Guangzhou). I never expected this mom and pop joint to serve such good food. It's not a gourmet place, but it's a gem. When I'm in China, Hongkong, Taiwan, or Japan, the best eateries are the little, unassuming ones. They put emphasis on the food, not the decor. I have grown to love this place! read more

Tiny hole in the wall joint that you'll miss if you drive by too fast. Has seating for about 10 people and sign that says $3.99 lunch specials. Parking in front of the store can get messy when busy, but plenty of parking around the corner of the building. I ordered Spicy Ginger and Garlic Chicken over the phone and they asked me how long before I stop by, I said 10 minutes. I got there 15 minutes after I placed the order and the food wasn't ready, they just started making the food. After waiting another 10 minutes, got my food, paid and came home. On their menu, there is a red * next to the dish indicating it's a hot & spicy dish, however the dish has no spice at all... if it was supposed to be spicy, then they forgot to add the spice level when they made my dish. As for the dish itself, it had bit of sour taste to it. I expected the liquid to be thicker, but it was thin... I guess I expected the dish to be more like the dishes offered from King Shing or Panda House. Also, the chicken breast meat used here was bit tougher than those from King Shing or Panda house, it had to be the method they used to cook the chicken before making the dish. On a next visit, I'll have to try their $3.99 lunch special and see how it is... as for now, not bad, different then what I expected but it was nice to try new place. I just got off work and ordered from here, and I will never make that mistake again. It took quite a while for delivery, but it's Saturday and I'm a patient, fellow food-service worker. However, my food was horrible. I ordered something I've had a million times all over the country and never had a problem with; Hunan chicken. The meal not only tasted horrible, but it also had raw veggies and smelled so bad I had to get it out of my face lol. My partner got fries and mozzarella sticks, which tasted funny and were served in a plastic bag together; the mozzarella sticks were also smooshed? Nicely flavored chicken stock, properly steamed dumplings, fresh green onion and served with wonton chips. *bonus Crab rangoon was hot, fresh and brought out with just hot mustard, and hot oil, as I asked. They timed the service just right. I finished up with my soup and was grateful she didn't make a grab for my soup bowl, as most places usually do. Dumplings were huge under cooked dough balls- chicken was slimy and undercooked- meal come in a container which if I didn't know better I'd believe it was a frozen meal 1/2 watered down. I liked it here! It seems to be a family-run business, which adds to the charm. Got two $3.99 lunch specials to split with the bf (curry chicken & chicken w/broccoli). The bf chose egg drop soup as his side item, while I chose white rice. We ate at the restaurant since none of the seating was taken, and almost immediately after sitting down, a sweet old Chinese grandma brought us a pitcher of water and cups (which we didn't even have to ask for!). You could see far into the back of the takeout place, where the chef (husband of the lady who took our order?? didn't ask) was cooking. That was kind of cool. The portions were great for $3.99, and I found it to be almost too much food for myself. I liked that there were plenty of vegetables (trying to convince myself that I'm eating healthier these days), but I didn't feel like they skimped on the chicken at all. The curry chicken was spicy! and I really liked the sauce. The chicken & broccoli was also tasty (I cleaned my plate) and had an array of vegetables other than broccoli that I wasn't expecting The cooking style reminded me a bit of some of the dishes my mom (who is Chinese-Vietnamese) made for my family as I was growing up. We were hesitant to try this place because of the reviews, however we were pleasantly surprised. I ordered General Tso's Tofu and it is the best tofu I've ever had at an Asian restaurant. We often complain about the lack of quality Chinese food in Ann Arbor. And while Chan's Garden is, admittedly, not the ultimate... we've come to feel that it's Ann Arbor's best offering. Further, they are consistent. Their food is always good and they listen to our requests (e.g., extra spicy). They also offer large portions and do not feel overpriced. I especially like their meal deals, for example the $8 orange chicken dinner that comes with a full tub of soup and lots of rice (fried rice, if you want!). So much good food. Just wish it had more broccoli. We always get Chan's Garden delivered. read more

I was really hungry and really in the mood for Chinese but now I was now worried after reading some blistering reviews on here. It turns out I had absolutely nothing to fear! My feast was scrumptious! I ordered veggie egg fu yong, spicy garlic and ginger tofu, vegetable spring rolls and hot and sour soup. Someone in another review said the hot and sour soup was too vinegary and I have to agree there but everything else was very fresh and very, very tasty! We ordered takeout from Chan's. This was some of the worst Chinese food I have ever tasted. I am not a purist - I like me some good-quality, Americanized, Chinese food. The food they sold us was gross, no matter what cuisine you file it under. -The pan-fried dumplings had a thick, doughy shell and smelled/tasted like they were filled with hamburger. Nasty hamburger. Threw them away. -The hot-and-sour soup was gloppy, over-thickened with cornstarch, and had almost no solids (mushrooms, vegetables). It tasted like sweet duck sauce had been dumped in to provide some flavor. Threw it away. -The mapo tofu resembled no such dish I have ever eaten, and again tasted like duck sauce. This is a very specific review for a very specific aspect of their menu. I was craving some fried appetizer treats for the football game.* Tbtotallyh, I put "zucchini" into seamless to see who delivered fried zucchini in the area. This place has the most disgusting fried food I have seen in years. Years. By far. One of the appetizers was hidden in .5-1 cm-thick pillowy dough. When I tore the dough off to see what was inside, there was something limp and bright yellow and vaguely fibrous, like it had once been a vegetable. So sad. It was all I had wanted. I tried to pick up a piece of shrimp toast and it slid out of my fingers, which started running with oil. Each piece soaked through two heavy-duty sheets of paper towel on each side. The crab cheeses (crab rangoons) were slightly less dripping with oil, but "least drenched with old, many-times-used oil" does not (sadly for me) equal "tasty." No idea what their real food is like but they should rethink their approach to batter, oil, and fryolators. I just threw everything out. So gross. *if anyone else for some bizarre reason is also dumb enough to consider ordering fried appetizer style food from this place, I can tell you that NYPD is a great place to order delivered fried food. if only they had fried zucchini. read more

When I need a quick fix of Chinese and am too lazy (or drunk) to make the drive to King Shin, Chan's Garden via GrubHub is my go-to option. I've never eaten in (I don't even know where they are located) but it always gets delivered quickly, hot and nicely wrapped. I'm kind of a stickler for take out/delivery being wrapped well. I never have an issue using GrubHub to order from here, the menu is perfectly presented on the mobile app and gives you lots of places for input. There are usually coupons available. While the food is fine, I wish it had more flavor. The only thing to really blow my mind is the curry chicken fried rice. Wow. Really good. But everything else rotates with each order because I just need a little more "oomph" when it comes to my Chinese. The chicken egg roll is just weird. read more

This food is okay, but nothing amazing in my opinion. The food tasted fresh, but it wasn't what I expected. I ordered the Mongolian beef, and when I received it, it was filled with peppers and a tan-colored sauce. I have never ordered a Mongolian beef and received peppers and a sauce that light. It usually has scallions, onions, beef and a dark brown sauce. So I don't get it... Because I hate pepper, my fiancee let me switch with her and I ate her beef with broccoli. I've always had a great meal here, but I encouraged coworkers to order here and I was embarrassed by the recommendation. The food was all HORRIBLE. They changed their sauce, the chicken all tasted extremely old as if it had been sitting for a very long time and "re-dropped" which most fast food workers will know exactly what that means. Basically old food that has been dropped back in the fryer so it looks like it was freshly made, but tastes like rubber and extra salty in sad attempts to mask the taste of old food. My review is based on 1990s but from what I have seen, not much has changed, even the prices. That part is good. A pretty good corporate takeout or if you live nearby. But the freshness of the ingredients really varies, so you have to check. One day, we ordered a fresh carp, but, towards the end of the meal I noticed it was basically already dead - they are supposed to be alive until the very last minute. Nothing worse than Chinese food that doesn't fill you up for like $5. Also Chan, the guy who usually delivers and owns the place is extremely nice. We wanted some late night dumplings and fried rice one night, and this was one of the only places open, and we went to pick it up. We pulled up to this dingy place with a giant old can of pineapples keeping the door open. We wanted to turn around and go home, but against better judgment, my boyfriend went inside to get the food while I waited in the car. He got to the counter and looked back at me in horror as the woman was packaging the food. She had trouble fitting the food in the cartons, so she tried to staple them shut. For some reason I honestly can't remember, we decided to actually try this food. The dumplings were doughy and old, and the fried rice tasted as if it was fried in oil sitting there for 2 years. We live right around the corner from Chan's, basically. Great food at this price point. For one thing, the fried rice isn't the prefab frozen stuff you get at a lot of cheaper Chinese places (Panda House, I'm looking at you). Let's see, what else? Good quality chicken. Wife and kids agree Chan's has the best Spring Rolls ever, they are good, just like the Egg Rolls. For reference, our favorite Chinese place in town was Paradise when it was open (We still miss it). But it was quite a bit pricier. Just ate the $3.99 Curry Chicken lunch special, great. Kids love the Orange Chicken. The worst thing you could perhaps say about it is sometimes the ratio of veggies/protein is a bit tilted in favor of the veggies. So - not as good as, say, TK Wu, or Paradise when they were around. Had Chan's Garden for the first time last night. I had an intense craving for Chinese food, saw Chan's on the GrubHub app, researched the restaurant quickly on Yelp, and went for it. While I typically order the same item or two, I felt like being adventurous and noticed that another Yelper highly recommended the chicken chow mein. Though I'd never tried chow mein before, I went for it (though I subbed pork) and was SO glad I did! Absolutely delicious! I also ordered the steamed veggie dumplings and really enjoyed that the dipping sauce was sweeter than I'm used to. The dumplings themselves are a bit more doughy than I typically like, but my overall impression was a good one. The veggie spring rolls are small, but yummy. I also used a GrubHub coupon to get a free wonton soup, but haven't eaten it yet so I can't review that. However, they did include tons of crispy noodles with it with is a huge plus. So many restaurants don't! My order was delivered approximately an hour after I ordered it (as quoted), and everything was nice and warm. The food is yummy and super fresh and even still steaming, despite the car ride.
