A once wonderful Asian eatery has become questionable. By implementing a form of "tipflation" the restaurant has raised prices by 18%. What's worse is it's a hidden gratuity that you may never notice. Pro Tip: Unbelievable someone has to be told this; check every item on your bill. Always look for posted signs as you initial enter; especially near the cash register. Also read the menu thoroughly. Normally, I wouldn't complain too loudly about an automatic 18% gratuity. What if today's service was lousy? It's no longer a tip, but a service charge. The biggest problem is not informing customers in advance. Maybe illegal? Well, IYKYK. I hate their dining room and probably always will. It's just like a boring, drab, dull office building cafeteria with no colour and nothing on the walls. Just an opinion. Always wanted to vent that. When it comes to customer service they are smiling, friendly and accommodating. Things have become a tad slow since pandemic. Maybe it's yet one more staffing shortage? The food here is very good. I encourage you to try the duck. Friends swear by the Wuxi Ribs. They did just raise the price to $22; but remember to add the 18% so that entree is now $26. Strongly not recommended. I arrived around 8:10 pm, clearly seeing the "Open" sign lit. After being seated, we were told to place our order immediately because the kitchen was about to close, which created an unwelcoming start to the meal. The most concerning issue was finding a piece of plastic in my soup. When I brought it to the staff's attention, the response was simply that it "looked clean" and that "the food was clean"--with no apology offered. Additionally, the restaurant adds a mandatory 3% credit card transaction fee and an automatic 18% gratuity, even for just three people. Aren't tips supposed to be voluntary and a reflection of good service, not forced on customers? To add insult to injury, the food portions were very small. We visited on Saturday and ordered the pork lo mein. The flavor was solid and the seasoning tasted true to the style, but the noodles had an unexpected texture. They seemed to have been boiled too long before the stir-fry, which left them soft and slightly slimy rather than firm and springy. I don't think this is typical for Taiwanese noodle dishes, so it appeared to be an execution issue rather than a feature of the cuisine. Overall, the dish had good flavor, but the noodle preparation affected the experience. Excited to try this restaurant in Ann Arbor in one of my trips there. Wide array of choices on the menu. Food is okay. Everything has basil topping. The one thing that really bothered my family was how we were treated by the lady server aka also the owner? She just rushes, bringing us our food, not bothering to offer us water or ask if there is something else we need. We have to ask for fork, water and I ordered soda all different times to which she tells us, "Is that all you need?"like we are a bother to her. This is another one of those spots where I can't believe I haven't written a review yet! Hands down, the best Asian food (specifically TAIWANESE FOOD!) in Ann Arbor! As a Taiwanese American, it was so wonderful to discover this spot when I started school at Michigan and it was easily the go-to spot every time my parents came into town to visit me because obviously, we always want to have Taiwanese food! My only light complaint about Asian Legend is that it can sometimes be inconsistent - at times, overly salty in its dishes or sometimes bland, but given how many times I've come here, the vast majority of dishes/food we get is wonderful and delicious and truly hits the spot! That spot being...my constant craving for Taiwanese food because it's truly the best type of cuisine! Asian Legend has all my favorites, all my comfort foods, from the small dishes/sides like scallion pancakes to the larger mains like rice noodles with beef (I'm trying to translate all of these things over from the Chinese names for all the dishes in my brain lol)! But just trust me on this, everything here is delicious and just depends on preference, but I encourage you to order a plethora from all over the menu in different categories and then share it - family style, of course - with the entire table! Asian Legend doesn't have massive lazy susans in the middle of every table for no reason, after all! In conclusion, if you're craving quality Asian food when you're in the Ann Arbor area, look no further than Asian Legend. Taiwanese street food is some of my favorite food as I grew up eating it. It's a bit hard to find in MI...until I moved to AA! A friend, who used to frequent Asian Legend nearly 10 years ago during his undergrad years, recommended it to me. Asian Legend has partnered with EatStreet for quick online ordering. But, I rely mostly on Chinese characters when I'm ordering Taiwanese food & the EatStreet menu does NOT include Chinese, so I just ended up calling because I ordered the wrong things the first time. But, as a heads up, if you're looking for 滷肉飯 (Lu Rou Fan), it's "Minced Pork Over Rice". The "Braised Pork Over Rice" is 燒肉飯 (Shao Rou Fan) is slightly different. I haven't had it here, but it's typically larger pork belly pieces versus the minced pork which is typically ground pork (as it is here.) Their Onion Pancake Wrapped w/Beef (牛肉捲餅) is pretty dang tasty here. Nice crispiness that held up well in the styrofoam box! It's like a Chinese burrito (but with a green onion pancake instead of a flour tortilla) with marinated pieces of beef shank. The Minced Pork was a GENEROUS portion with the hardboiled soy sauce egg and tasty pickled mustard greens. I was also really impressed by their sauteed pea shoots -- really garlicky & could tell that they used xiao xia mi (little dried shrimp that you can't really see) for that nice punch of umami -- exactly like how my mom used to! I was pleasantly surprised that it came with a box of rice too -- not sure if it's because I ordered during lunch. I'd love to see Asian Legend around for another 10 years, so please support your local restaurants and find your new Taiwanese fav! read more

I tried this restaurant for the first time with an Asian friend of mine who was in town visiting. Super glad she recommended it. We had the onion pancake, the pepper salt crispy chicken, and the chicken with basil (bone in). The flavors of all were so delicious. I found the bones in the chicken with basil to be annoying, but the flavor to be worth the effort. My friend recommended trying the beef noodle soup next time I come back, and I will definitely be back!! The service and ambiance weren't spectacular, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a special date night, but it's certainly worthy of a quick dine in or takeout opportunity. read more

What's with all of the bad reviews? Two main takeaways: people in A2 would rather have Panda Express than authentic Taiwanese food, and people overvalue service, which is always going to be poorer at Asian restaurants. I was very happy with our dinner. We had fried tofu with basil, eggplant with tofu, noodles with pork, and garlic bok choi. The tofu was plump and juicy, with lots of sauve in all of the dishes. The eggplant was a huge hit, our favorite of the bunch. The noodles were thin, with lots of Taiwanese-seasoned pork bits. I though portions were quite reasonable for the price: ~$45 got us three entrees and a side and fed us for five meals. Rice was included with the veggie entrees. I get that covid has turn the restaurant industry up-side down and a lot of creative ideas has to be hatched during government ordered shutdown. I've heard of covid service fee or raising prices to offset the delivery cost, etc. However, all the emergency orders were lifted, dine-in is allowed, masks are optional.... but mandatory tipping for dine-in? Call it an excuse, convenience or just going with the flow, but Asian Legend automatically adds 15% tip for dine-in. I've been to lot of restaurants since the government allowed dine-in, all the places that I've visited do not automatically include tips, it was optional - especially for party of two. Yeah, don't think I'll be coming back again.... and it's been around 9 years since my last visit. I came by with my nephew for lunch. We were the first customers (12pm); got seated and reviewed the menu. To order, you indicate what you want on the paper menu and we went with the following: - Taiwanese baby bokchoy with garlic - Eggplant with sliced pork and basil - Beef Chow fun - Fried chicken (chicken with basil) - Onion pancake wrapped with beef We enjoyed the meal. The least favorite was the fried chicken - really had no flavor to it. The onion pancake was excellent - good way to start off the meal as a starter. Lived in the Ann Arbor area for years and never heard of this place until now! Was recommended by my boss who is Taiwanese. We went here for a work party and tried a variety of Taiwanese dishes including onion pancakes and onion pancakes with beef, eggplant and oysters, cabbage with garlic, and fried shrimp (not sure what the name is), and some sort of pork noodle stir fry with mushrooms. I am not Taiwanese and haven't had Taiwanese food before so I can't speak to the authenticity of their food. However, I had heard from a student from Singapore that she thought that this was the best Asian restaurant in town. We went for dinner on a Saturday night when they were busy but we were seated right away. We could have ordered fairly quickly but the menu is large and many of the items were unfamiliar (e.g., spicy pig ears, intestine, etc.) so it took us awhile to work through the menu. I ordered the spicy pork with mustard greens and my husband had the shrimp with broccoli. Both dishes were very good. Once we ordered, our food arrived very quickly. Finally found a Singaporean favorite in Ann Arbor, stir fry kangkong and horfun and they are amazing! Fyi its not sambal belacan but garlic stir fry, still, im happy to find two dishes that im familar with and craving since covid lockdown! 10/10 for the Horfun, great noodle texture, thick, huge pieces, flavorful. Definitely the most authentic Taiwanese we've found near the Ann Arbor area over the past 6 months. This is our GO TO spot, they deserve a lot more credit for authenticity and solid food. We also generally get the mapo tofu which is great and we try other items from time to time, such as the intestine which was OK but not crispy enough. This is definitely the place to go if you're looking for a large variety of authentic Chinese and Taiwanese dishes, meaning dishes you would order if you were actually in China or Taiwan. The Taiwanese food here is really good and authentic! This is the only place in Ann Arbor I could find that serves oyster omelet which is one of my favorite Taiwanese dishes - I always get this specific item whenever I visit relatives in Taiwan. They also have a lot of other yummy dishes I like to order such as the three cup chicken, ma po tofu, and lu rou fan (minced pork over rice). It felt like a taste of home having some of these things. Like most Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants, it's more fun to eat with a larger group so you can order/try as many dishes as possible. The prices here are fair for the portion sizes you get. I haven't had an issue with service. However, I do speak mandarin and the people I usually eat with also speak mandarin with the servers. That may be a contributing factor. read more

Asian Legend is a gem! I just wish more people would appreciate it for what it is: Taiwanese comfort food in the heart of Ann Arbor. This was an unexpected find. Now I am not an expert on Taiwanese food, but one of my son's favorite dishes in all the world is minced pork over rice. So when I found it on the menu at Asian Legend, we simply had to make a stop for dinner. It's not surprising that more people haven't figured out what Asian Legend does best. This dish was buried on a part of the menu called "Bento Boxes" and to many that's a Japanese thing. But it's a Taiwanese thing too. Don't take my word for it. Tucked away in Michigan Ann Arbor is an authentic Taiwanese restaurant that students can enjoy. The staff are prompt and yes according to some of the other reviews, it helps that you do speak mandarin as it makes service/communication easier/better. Wuxi Ribs - Tender off-the-bone beef ribs with a slightly sweet glaze that is not overpowering at all. My only gripe is that there weren't more ribs on the plate! Score of 4.5/5 Black Pepper Pork On Rice - Comes with some green peppers and onions but I found the consistency of the black pepper sauce to be a bit watered down. The pork was also not very well seasoned and relied too much on the sauce for the flavor. Score of 3/5 Vegetables - Some seasoned vegetables that I can't recall the full name of (look at the picture for reference). Had a very different flavor profile as if it tasted like fermented eggs. Unique taste not for most people. Score of 3/5 If you are looking for some classic taiwanese dishes, this is the spot for you. Ordered chicken bento (comes with braised prok and rice, an egg, and some spice to mix into the rice), eggplant and tofu, and onion pancake (which is scallion pancake in most other restaurants). I really enjoy Taiwanese food and this place served really authentic Taiwanese snacks and entrees! The chicken we got was really crispy and tender at the same time, very much like the ones I had in Taiwan last time I visited. The service was really good too! This is one of my favorite restaurants on campus for Asian food. I've been coming here since freshman year and it really has never disappointed me. The food is authentic and the service is excellent. If you're craving Taiwanese delicacies, this is the place to go. I enjoy the string beans with salty egg a lot and order it pretty much every time I go. It's a very unique dish with a lot of flavors. I also get the spicy beef, tofu, and mustard green (one dish) and it is absolutely delicious. It comes in a sizzling plate with flame beneath it, which keeps the dish hot white you're eating! I've also tried their mapo tofu, which is very good and the best you'll find on campus. The bubble tea here, however, is pretty average. I gave them 4 stars because I rated them according to the authenticity and the cost of the food. However, I didn't see any issue on service as well. I saw their menu online and was curious about some of the Taiwanese food, so I decided to have it a shot! Upon getting in the restaurant, the staff was very friendly and led me to my table, it was a very quick decision for me since I already knew what I wanted to order. I ordered a Squid with satay noodle soup and oyster omelette, both dishes are very local Taiwanese street food. The taste was pretty good, even it can't compare to what I get in Taiwan, but it was very tasty. The only downside for the oyster omelette was not enough oyster and the sauce was little bit off. For people we is craving for Taiwanese street food, I recommend you to try it out. Many people are complaining about the service, but I didn't have any issue.
