Happy I made time to stop in during my recent trip to Chicago. My best friend and I stopped in on a Friday night. We were seated right away surprisingly and loved the vibes of the space immediately. Our waitress Olivia greeted us promptly. We had the best service all night. Olivia definitely made us feel welcome and taken care of. I opted for the crab cakes as an app and fried chicken for entree, which was very different for me, but the menu description sold it. The crab cakes were really flavorful. I would definitely get them again. The chicken was extremely crispy and I even enjoyed the mac and cheese. The corn pudding was not what you'd expect. I was thinking traditional, but this had other veggies in it and was much more savory. It wasn't bad, just not what I expected. Warning to large parties!!! If you come to Chant with a large group expect subpar service because the tip is included and they no longer have to work for it! Last Saturday night we were part of a group of 10 celebrating a birthday. Our server Anna, didn't come back to check on us after delivering our initial order. We wanted more drinks and she was no where to be found. She ghosted us forcing us to go to the bar and order drinks ourselves. So not only did she ghosted us, we were penalized for going to the bar, they closed our tab saying we weren't allowed to go to order more drinks at the bar. What were we supposed to do? After paying a nearly $500 tab we took our business to the Sophy down the street where we finished enjoying more drinks. Because of chant policy of not being allowed to order from the bar but not being served we spent an additional $200 at the Sophy. Anna received a $67 tip for serving us only once. Guaranteed tips hurts the customer. To be fair, the music and ambiance was wonderful, the cocktails were delicious, the appetizers and food was mediocre but the manager did give the birthday boy a free slice of cheesecake after we complained about our tab being closed and abandoned by Anna. read more

So I was excited for this place but it fell flat. First I ff they were out of all the appetizers. Literally only had Calamari at 5pm on a Sunday. The calamari was pure bland rubber. The main dishes were amazing. I mean AMAZING, the oxtails and short ribs were juicy and falling off the bone. Not over seasoned and flat out delicious. The duck fat rice legit was EVERYTHING. If I could deliver a 0 just for today I would. I also wish I had the initial pictures that set this review into motion, especially in this digital world but due to me believing in giving people a chance, I don't. We ordered the Braised Oxtail (delicious) & Lobster Bisque-for her- "So Good", Quesabirria Egg Rolls (Offffff the Chain), & lastly my Dear Old Lambchop". I began to eat my mashed potatoes & spinach. When I say perfection- I mean perfection. Seasoned well, plated average, but portioned well. But taste- Yes you gets a 10 for that. I then dive into the main cuisine. The starring actor. I knifes my LAMBCHOPS. I mean you know. The reason why Im actually there and the lambchop is so raw (temperature ordered-Well)....And the is running out of it and down the plate. I think it no big deal. It happens. Just inform the waitress- (thats another review) and what begins as ride of poor quality/cooked food begins a trip on poor quality service. I informed the waitress of the poor quality/cooked food and she observed the plate and the complaint. She removed the plate and informed me that they would recook it. I then asked her were they planning to just recook the lamb chops or prepare the dish in its entirety and she stated that she informed her manager and she was unsure. She later came to me & stated that it was going to be the entire dish. I then asked her to pack it to go for me. Upon arriving home and getting settled to finally eat my dinner I observed that there are actually only 2 Lambchops in a box, a portion of my order. Not only did I receive poor quality/cooked food. I also received less than what I paid for and I had to eat it in manner that I did not want to eat it. Some here Some there. CHANT I will continue to speak your name CHANT to potential customers. Great casual date spot - wide variety of stuff on the menu, and lots of vegan and vegetarian options. We went on a Sunday at around 6pm after leaving MSI, and were able to get a table immediately (2 people). I got the blackened shrimp tacos, as recommended by our lovely waitress, and they were delicious! Very flavorful. My date got the avocado summer roll, which was also excellent - they really don't skimp on the avocado, which is always appreciated. It was a Friday Night, we were in Hyde Park, and my girlfriend had wanted to try Chant for many years. That made the decision easy. We showed up with no reservation and expecting there to be an unreasonable wait, but the person at the door said 30 minutes and he'd text me when the table was ready. We did a small walking tour of Hyde Park (honestly I could make a separate post about this... I have so many questions... looking at you parking people!). We were about 15 minutes into our walking tour when the text came that our table was ready. We were sat at the front of the restaurant in this nice wood booth. When I say wood, it looks like the table was part of tree that a slab was cut out of and turned into a table. It had a natural shape to it and was gorgeous. The booth was meant to sit more than 2 people, but I wasn't about to complain. After doing perusing the menu and its ample choices. We each came to a conclusion. She had the Pad Thai, and I had the Jambalaya. She liked her Pad Thai, she had nothing but good things to day about it. My jambalaya was fantastic. I've always enjoyed Jambalaya, but this is probably some of the best I've had in Illinois. The ingredients on their own were flavorful, but when combined with the broth, it was amazing. Apparently I made "yummy eating noises" while I consumed it. For desert we shared a molten lava cake. It was okay. It wasn't bad, but I was not impressed. Then again I had just ate a big bowl of Jambalaya that was so good that I'm trying to figure out if I can get it delivered to my house. So my taste buds may not have been ready for the sweetness. Not only is the food great, but I thought the ambience was awesome too. The architecture was that of exposed brick done in a crumbling building style. With a lot of South East Asia influence. Best meal and best time I have had in more than a minute. My wife ordered the lamb chops in Panang curry and coconut milk. I went with the oxtail with "Cajun" rice. My wife's was great and my oxtail was simply phenomenal. Live music on the weekend, I was told about Chant by Tre of Tre and the Blue Knights. They brought the music all night. Thankful for Tre. I've been wanting try this place for a while. It was just ok. Started with the crispy shrimp rolls; they were very good and fresh. Also had the lobster Rangoon. Didn't love them and didn't see or taste any lobster. Hubby ordered the lobster bisque. He didn't like it and neither did I. They missed the mark on the traditional bisque flavor. He also ordered the blackened shrimp tacos. They were very spicy. I reluctantly ordered the catfish and Mac and cheese based on Yelp reviews. The catfish was highly seasoned, but I happen to like that. It was fried perfectly. The Mac and cheese was even pretty good. I was shocked for an Asian fusion restaurant. I ordered a lychee martini but it wasn't good. Service was decent. I prefer a no non sense waitresss who gets the order right but doesn't bother you much. This place has some very creative Asian-Southern American fusion dishes that we are still processing. Of the two things we tried, one we liked, the other not so much - and so we're on the fence about this place. - Sambal catfish - the catfish was delicious, very crispy, tender, and went well with what was essentially mac & cheese under it. The chicken wasn't so spicy (I would have liked even mode sambal flavor!) but it was an interesting idea. The mac & cheese was really tasty but a bit loose. - Cashew chicken - this was way too salty and wet (lots of liquid left in the bottom of the bowl). Needed lots of rice to temper out the saltiness. The Pros: Nice ambience They were very attentive, extremely actually which leads to the cons The Cons: I came in and at this time there wasn't anyone in the restaurant on myself and friend. We ordered a random fish dish to try something new.The veggies were fine, but the fish had a very strange smell, extremely. So much so that I mentioned to friend, that it taste like what fecal matter smells like. She agreed, but the smell of the fish didn't smell as if it was spoiled per say. I've traveled all around the world, and some fish do have peculiar smells and taste.But the way the waiter kept specifically asking was the fish okay, before we even started to it, made me assume that it indeed actually was spoiled and they tried to cover it up with all the seasoning etc. Because of this, I will not be coming to this spot again. The kitchen staff could have just stated it was unavailable and we would have happily ordered something else instead of a expensive cut of fish that was obviously past fresh date and I would warn anyone from doing the same. I was told to check out Chant by one of my friends who previously dined there. Legit their food was so delicious! We were greeted promptly and sat in Bethany's section. She was one of the best servers I've ever had! She gave amazing suggestions and we enjoyed all of them! We started with the Lobster and Shrimp Shumai, then I got the Grilled Lamb Chops and my husband got the Ribeye Steak & Shrimp. We were stuffed, but Bethany convinced us to try the Chant Cheese Cake Wedge. I'm glad she did, because that really rounded out our date night dining experience. If could give 10 stars I would. Upon entry the vibe was pretty chill. I was greeted by Bethany & other staff members. I eventually was seated. My waitress Ana was very warm. She made me feel welcome & proceeded to give me all star service. She was very attentive even though she seemed to be having a busy day. I started off with the Fried Greem Tomatoes. They arrived hot & crispy. Seasoned & tasty. For my entree I had the braised oxtail. The oxtails were cooked to perfection. They were served with a Cajun fried rice that had a great balanced taste of Thai & Chant's flavors. Again, Ana was a tour guide to Chant's menu. I hadn't been to Chant in years, but my little brother was in town so we met his dad there for dinner. His dad knows the owner so he's been a longtime customer. We ended up at the location for this reason. We walked in on weeknight and was seated immediately. Our server was attentive and polite. The restaurant was clean and I found the ambiance warm. I also appreciated that our server was wearing a mask. I ordered the gumbo. I liked it but didn't care for the chicken. It had no flavor which took away from the overall taste of the meal. The gumbo roux was good though and so was the andouille sausage. I wouldn't order it again though just because of the chicken. My sister had the cashew chicken which she really liked. I tasted it and agreed that it was good, but the chicken was flavorless again. I could tell that it was the same chicken that was in the gumbo. They just cooked a large pot of it and put it in every dish. The spicy soy sauce definitely made the chicken more palatable though. My sister also had the chocolate cake which she didn't like. She took one bite and didn't want anymore. My bro tried it too and he also didn't like it. My brother first ordered the short ribs & Thai chili lo mein, but he sent it back because he didn't like the taste. He ordered something else which he enjoyed much more. I can't recall the name of the second dish though. (see pic) Lastly, my brother's dad had some chicken wings and a salad. He frequents Chant so you already know what he thought about his food. I should also note that my brother, sister and I all got sick after eating the food. My brother's dad didn't so it had to be something that is in all the wok dishes. My first time at Chant, was riding around with my cousins looking for a place to eat, have a few drinks, and hang out. Rode past this place and saw the live band in the window so we stopped and went in. The staff was nice, can't comment much on the food we all just had appetizers can't get those wrong. My cousins had some type of sweet wings, I had pot stickers. I ordered some type of lemonade saki, it was alright. Food was really good and service was fast! The pad Thai with tofu was delicious and the portion was huge, had a lot leftover and the dish itself had a lot of tofu which was nice. Also, we ordered the avocado roll and that was SO good; one of the best things I've tried and a must order! The food was good overall, but there was live music that was way too loud to the point that we couldn't even talk at our table or hear each other. Had a short rib the other day at this restaurant. The short rib meat was dry and no seasoning at all. The bread was soggy and no real color on the bread. The French fries were limp instead of being crispy. How do you even make limp French fries and the plate that the food was cold instead of being hit so the food cooled off quickly from the kitchen to the table!!!!!! read more

Chant has been in Hyde Park for a long while. The food is good, not anything that comes to my attention. We like to go to listen to the live music and have a couple of beers. The calamari was quite delicious. I then had a ribeye steak, shrimp with garlic mash potatoes. This was pretty good as well but not $34 bucks good. You can get this same kind of meal at Applebee's or Chilli's and it will cost about $24. This restaurant is really overpriced. And to make matters worse, they include a mandatory 18% service fee. They never state was this service fee is, but since they have a slot for additional tip (which is a lot of nerve) , I'm assuming they are making you pay a tip, and it's no longer optional. My take, minimum wage went up, the owner is probably making the consumer pay for this. That money is going straight to him, not the staff. Then has the nerve to ask for an additional tip. read more

Stopped in for lunch before my daughters open house. The menu items were nice and looked delicious as they were coming to other tables. I ordered the shrimp and chicken gumbo. The 4 stars are for the drinks. I had both a Hennessy sidecar and a lemon drip martini which were both made EXTREMELY well. The food on the other hand was just okay. I ordered the salmon sandwich and the garlic cilantro fries. The fries were honestly better than the sandwich but were extremely garlicky with whole pieces of cilantro- if that's not your thing just avoid it all together. It was as if the sandwich was missing seasoning, spice or simply something more. I added an aioli to it and it make it a little better. I would return for the drinks any day! read more

I'm saddened by this place now. This is where my husband took me on our first date when I lived in Hyde Park. We return every year on June 4th (except for COVID), we have been coming here for 7 years. The menu has changed and the quality of food has declined. It also seems as if the staff did not want to be there and gave us mediocre service.
