Tonight we enjoyed a wonderful dinner meal at Jordyn's in Hyde Park. The Hostess was friendly and helpful. Our server, Jay, was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. We shared the pot roast empanada appetizer!!! Yes, delicious, just like it sounds! Both of us enjoyed our entrees. I had the "smothered" porkchops unsmothered! Got the gravy on the side! The porkchops were perfectly prepared, juicy and lightly seasoned! I chose cabbage and sweet potatoes for my side items. My husband ordered the fall-off-the-bone, beef short ribs with mac n cheese and string beans. Everything was plated and arrived to the table hot and all together! So important! The pace and timing of each course was perfect. He enjoyed a cocktail, I chose a ginger ale. We shared dessert. We are in anniversary mode so a mid-week, great meal was appropriate, and the soulful vibe of this restaurant made for a fun experience. Oh, and, the playlist had us singing 'quietly' thru dinner! We go out a lot, all over town, the burbs, and of course when we travel, but Jordyn's will stay on our list for a while. The menu is extensive so there is a lot to choose from! This was our first time dining here and we will definitely go back again. We had lots of leftovers, plus I ordered a second order of cabbage. It was that good! I have to break it down this way because I wanted to like this place a lot, but they really missed the mark. *Service was terrible. The only plus to their service was CJ - please make him a waiter because he actually cares and continued to check on us though things were out of his control. We were never greeted by our waitress and when she finally came, maybe 25min into our reservation, she was acting slow. She made mistakes and forgot things. We got our drinks so late and our meals as well. Very annoying experience! *Food is the only reason they got more than 1 star. The soul rolls were tasty - moreso like a dessert. The mac & cheese could be cheesier. The greens were fine but missed the mark with barely any juice. The short rib I ordered came with gravy and didn't state it would which turned me off. This was an interesting experience, a very cute place, but I would love to come back. I say that it was interesting because the food we were able to try didn't disappoint, but it was annoying we couldn't try the dishes we really wanted. I wanted to try the alfredo, fried rice, or mac & cheese as my main dish to be told they weren't available. I ended up getting the fried chicken & waffles, which was good, but it just wasn't what I wanted off the menu...literally my 4th choice. My mom also had to change her dish. Was referred to this restaurant by someone in Garrett's. Checked the menu and reviews I told my husband let's try it. Was service kinda slow yes but Shay (I believe was her name) was handling all the tables. She never made us feel rushed and answered all questions. The food was really good! I was in the area being a tourist and this was the closet option when I searched soul food on the app so I gave them a try. I had two strawberry lemon drops and the beef short ribs my bill came to $100. They charged me $32 for substituting don julio for my tequila choice. The beef ribs were tender and I enjoyed the gravy they were smothered in. I ordered deviled eggs for an appetizer but the waiter waited until the people I was with got their appetizers to tell me it wasn't available anymore. We made reservations for 8 people for Mother's Day dinner at 7:30 PM while visiting Chicago this weekend. We arrived approximately 25 minutes early and had no issue waiting until our reservation time. The experience became disappointing when our server advised that multiple menu items were already sold out, including the candy yams, smothered turkey wings, collard greens, and a few additional items. We understood it was a busy holiday and were willing to work around that. However, after placing our order for appetizers (fried green tomatoes and buffalo wings) along with drinks, it took approximately 40 minutes for the appetizers to arrive. We were then told our entrées should be out shortly, but another 40 minutes passed with no food and no meaningful updates. At that point, after waiting over 2 1/2 hours and it being after 9:00 PM, we decided to leave. The complimentary warm champagne offered did not resolve the situation. What made the experience even more frustrating was the lack of communication, poor service overall, and no visible manager on duty to address the issue or assist customers. We understand holidays are busy, but waiting over two hours without receiving our meals is unacceptable, especially with a reservation for a large party planned in advance. The service was great. I think her name was Tish - she was so helpful since we hadn't been here before. The food was just alright. They were out of a few things so I went with the catfish. I asked for it fried hard and that was a mistake - it came out super dark - not golden crispy. The iced water was awful - they should stop serving that immediately. The blue kool-aid was good but no refills ... surprising since you can't really get cheaper than kool-aid. I forgot to take pics- which is always telling since I snap pics of everything worthy. I've been here several times. I've had the fried rice (which was salty), chicken (which was dry and overcooked) and other meals. The sides are very good, but the mains were questionable. Aside from that, they were blatantly playing R Kelly. They were asked (not by me) to change the song because it wasn't appropriate to play his music. 3-4 songs later was another R Kelly song. As I've been sitting here 6 R Kelly songs have been played. They were asked again about the music, apologized, and then 2 songs later another R Kelly song played. I understand a lot of people in this city bathe in their ignorance about the predator that is R Kelly. However, it is disgusting to force his music onto the ears of patrons who may be affected by the crimes he has committed. The service and food were excellent. I went with friends on August 4 2:30 pm. Our server was attentive and explained the menu as we were all first timers there. I ordered the smothered chicken with greens and Mac and cheese. My friends ordered catfish and Cornish hens and they said their food was delicious as well. Service was quick and friendly, even on a busy Sunday. The menu is extensive. I had the chicken and mini waffles with potatoes, and everything was flavorful and well-seasoned. My family loved the roast beef empanadas, catfish, and black beans (my mom called them "perfect"). Portions are a bit small, but the flavors make up for it. I enjoy going to cities and eating at local establishments. Jordyn's has a soulful attitude and it's a vibe. They are not vegan friendly. We came at an off time and the food came out right away. I had a horrible experience at Jordyn's Soul Cafe, Hyde Park. From the moment we sat down, the experience was disappointing. We were seated at a high table with extremely low chairs, and when we asked if anyone had ever complained about them, our waitress gave us a "death stare" that immediately made us feel like she was annoyed. Things only got worse from there. We waited over an hour just for an order of fried green tomatoes and then another 45 minutes with still no entrées. Meanwhile, tables that arrived after us were being served their food. They even served my daughter a bottled sodas with no ice. When we finally spoke to the manager, there was no empathy, and no effort to make things right. Instead, we were told the other guests had arrived before us, which wasn't true. To make matters worse, we were still charged for our drinks and appetizer after sitting there for nearly two hours and never receiving our meals. As someone who works in complaint management, I am truly appalled by the lack of accountability and ownership that was shown. Mistakes happen, but how you respond to those mistakes speaks volumes about your organization. A "sincere"apology, empathy, and a willingness to make things right can go a long way. Unfortunately, none of that was demonstrated, which made an already disappointing experience even worse. It's not always the issue itself that leaves a lasting impression, it's how people choose to handle it. As someone who believes in supporting Black-owned businesses, this experience was extremely disappointing. The place was PACKED - Definitely recommend reservations. Food was a bit slow to arrive, but MAAAAAAAN OG man! It just SLAPPED. Worth every second. We had a variety of entrees between 3 of us & each was superb with epic proportion sizes. And don't get me started on the sides....gah! So. GOOD. The restaurant automatically adds gratuity for parties of two or more, which seems to be becoming more common, so that wasn't my main concern. What was frustrating was that two guests in our party were charged an additional $4 per drink because they ordered their beverages as "neat pours," and no one informed us there would be an upcharge. Transparency regarding extra charges would have been appreciated. Additionally, our server only came to our table twice during the entire meal: once to take our order and once to bring the check. When our food arrived, we didn't even have plates or utensils and had to flag someone down to get them. While the food was outstanding, the service experience left a lot to be desired. read more

My mom ordered a virgin Pina colada that had no coconut in there, well maybe some for color. It was watered down and tasted like pineapple juice. My mom wanted spaghetti as one of her sides and at 12:45 in the afternoon it wasn't available. So she opted for Mac and cheese, dressing and greens. The greens weren't out the can, they were fresh and decent! The dressing didn't come with gravy (you must pay extra for it) and tasted like it was cornbread mixed with Stove Top stuffing. It wasn't good. The Mac was good but was cheated on how much was added to the bowl. It was half full. Now the cornbread was good!!! You guys charge a 20% gratuity for parties of 2 or more. Which it isn't stated on your menu....so we paid double. I only learned of the 20% gratuity charge through reading someone say something about it online through another customer. So we paid a double gratuity. The waitress brought over the scanner and saw us put in a tip and didn't say that gratuity is added from parties of 2 or more. But, you could BYOB The decor is very beautiful. Enjoyable music and cool vibes. But, the food wasn't what we expected. Soul Food should be seasoned and cooked with Love. The catfish was fried perfect but lacked flavored. The fried tomatoes tasted like they were fried in some old corn meal. My friend ordered the dressing and it was dry and hard. No gravy or cranberry sauce. . The Yams were pretty and the cabbage wasn't seasoned. The prices on the menu is ridiculous and not worth it. The service was just ok. I heard about this restaurant through word of mouth and social media. I was not prepared for how beautiful it was in terms of decor and ambiance. From the minute you walk in, it's almost like you are taken on a trip to your favorite scene in a 90s or early 2000s movie. Our server, Mari, was exceptional. She was friendly, attentive and no ask felt too much for her. On to the food. My favorite dishes were a tie between the lobster mac and cheese and the jerk tacos. The jerk tacos have a secret sauce that explodes in your mouth with flavor. And you see how the cheese on the mac and cheese pulls apart in my picture! The sweet potatoes were also really good, but definitely sweet. My least favorite dish was the cornbread. It was missing something. I wasn't in the mood for soul food that night. But my friend suggested it and so, we went. I'm glad I did. Currently, they're BYOB, but they have a bar on one side of the restaurant, so I'm assuming a liquor license is in the works. Service was friendly and pleasant, with our server sporadically checking on us during our meal to ensure we were good throughout the meal. The fried green tomates: Seasoned, perfectly fried, and not greasy. The sweet/spicy gravy/sauce with it, though, is a miss. The smothered chicken (they're 4 wings), mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, greens, and candied yams are all solid choices. I liked how the smothered chicken was still crispy despite the gravy. But, the pot roast my friend ordered is the star of the show! You can taste many of the seasonings they used, which are blended perfectly to give it flavor. The food was good but the service need a lot of work. Went on 8/14, for lunch with family from out of town. Placed our order it took quite a bit of time for our food to come out. Four of us got our food not at the same time and we were waiting on the fifth meal had to call someone over to tell them what happened to their food. The waiter said did you order? Okay, here we go .... It's located on 53rd Street Hyde Park, so if you are familiar with this area arrive about 30 minutes to an hour early to find parking. I went on a Saturday with 2pm reservations, and easily found parking within a blocks walk without having to drive around. The location is quant but has more seating than expected. It's a posh, blend of vibes and red velvet seating arrangements. I loved the fact that they sat us at a comfy booth table but they also have bar seating. Make sure to arrive with your party to be seated. They have a waiting space in the back with about 5 chairs. Once seated, our server promptly came over and took our order which we tried the Margarita flights (blueberry, passion fruit, strawberry lemonade, and mango) strawberry lemonade was my favorite. The lamb chops cooked Tender, Mac, and Broccolini. My friend orders the Smothered Snapper, Greens, and Mashed Potatoes with Gravy on the side. We ate every bite ... thought I we would have left overs. Very well seasoned. The server staff was nice and attentive, they do get busy at times, but always try to make sure you have what you neeed. Things take a while to be prepared but it shows that they care about every plate they're crafting for their customers. It was brunch, it wasn't a huge disappointment. The servers were young adults who weren't proactive, attentive and didn't place an order for one our guest. The server seemed really inexperienced. It would serve the young lady well if management provided adequate training and shadowing for their young servers. The manager eventually came and rectified the situation however the server did not have great interpersonal or customer service skills. Ambiance/location 4/5 Conveniently located on Grand Avenue in a quaint shopping area that bustling with people and activity. Ambiance was such a cute spot with comfortable seating and Instagram photo worthy décor which also included a phot opp backdrop for customers. If you're driving, parking will be scarce as its typically very busy w/no parking lot. We took a Lyft so it was a much better option as is was busy midday traffic and congestion. I came here for carryout on a Friday. It seemed a little pricey for soul food, and I was not sharing, so I got two appetizers, the fried green tomatoes and shrimp tacos. I was not eating red meat or pork at the time, I'll try those when I have company. I placed the order with the friendly hostess. She told me half an hour but I got a text much sooner. The fried green tomatoes (after I heated them in the oven, not the microwave) were crisp, well breaded, and not too salty. The tacos (coming in a set of 3) ate more like a fajita, as it had shrimp, cheese, sauce, and small tortilla wrap bread; tacos usually have those things as well, but also lettuce or tomatoes, and a hard-like shell. I know it's not supposed to be authentic Mexican, it's just a 'soul taco' and it was so good I almost hate to quibble! I want to try the egg rolls next time (another interesting take on fusion ethnic food). I hope they get a liquor license, or at least waive the corkage fee, when I go back to dine in. read more

We were sat promptly and greeted. They have a number of great food options. We tried pot roast egg rolls which has great flavor but needed more meat! I made a quick walk to Trader Joe's to get margaritas and scotch. The wait staff do work together but they do not seem well organized. Today, there were a couple of things that made our visit less than stellar. If I could give zero stars, I would. In fact, I'd go into the negatives if possible. I genuinely don't think I've ever experienced worse service in my life. Under no circumstances should anyone wait 30 minutes just for someone to take their order. We should've walked out, but I foolishly decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. Huge. An hour in, and not a single plate had hit the table. Not one. And when the food *finally* arrives? It's the wrong order. They correct it and bring out the fried chicken--fine, whatever. The sides? Bland. The deviled eggs (which, mind you, were an appetizer) showed up last looking like someone half-heartedly slapped them together. The lumpy mashed potatoes had more personality--and that's saying something. And just when I thought it couldn't get worse, they tack on an *automatic* 20% gratuity for parties of two or more. Now, I usually don't mind auto-gratuity when it makes sense, but here?!? It was also hilarious that the server said that they have to split the fee with BOH so he asked for more tip... lol Customers shouldn't be financially penalized for a restaurant's incompetence.
