When my ex-wife came in town to see her godmother, we met for lunch at Dawn AM Eatery before having a go of the town. We shared the smoked salmon deviled eggs. The yolk didn't have a strong mustard base, but it was still good. The saltiness of the capers would have been a bit much on them. My ex ordered the catfish with collard greens and a side of slaw. I must admit that they scored high for the crust in terms of crunchiness and flavor. The greens could have used a little more seasoning. I am no fan of slaw, so I cannot speak to how it tasted. I ordered the pot roast and jalapeno grits. You can have shrimp and grits. Give me pot roast and jalapeno grits any day. The pot roast was tender and the grits were creamy without being runny. Dawn AM Eatery packs out fast. The website recommends making reservations. Because we were playing by ear, we went as a walk-in and had a 30-minute wait. ### Dawn AM Eatery Review Got up this morning and everyone decided to have breakfast at Dawn AM Eatery. My sister made reservations for our family. She initially tried to make one reservation for 12 people but was told she could only make **two reservations for six people each**, both for 9:00 AM. That was the first red flag. I walked in at 9:00 AM, and as a Kenwood Academy alum, I saw the Kenwood Academy sign and thought to myself, *"This place is going to be good!"* Boy, was I wrong! Everyone who was already there had been seated, but our family was split up--half on one side of the restaurant and the other half on the complete opposite side. One side had a long bench with approximately 16 tables, and that entire section was practically empty. I asked the manager if our family could be seated together on that side since the tables were empty. She told us **no**. I asked why, since there were plenty of open tables. She simply said, *"We have other reservations."* I explained that there would still be plenty of tables available for those reservations, but she remained firm and completely unwilling to accommodate us. Then she told us that if we wanted to sit together, we could sit **outside**. Keep in mind--it was raining, and we had my **80-year-old mother** with us. Needless to say, sitting outside was not an option. What really bothered me was the manager's attitude. There was no apology, no attempt to find a reasonable solution, and no sympathy for the situation. She was rude and completely unaccommodating. We also had three additional people join our group unexpectedly, and they were told they would have to sit outside because we had more people than originally reserved. Then came the service. Our waiter was extremely inattentive and acted as though he didn't really want to serve our group. He took our order, and then we waited...and waited...and waited. At one point, I went outside to check on our other family members who were seated separately. They weren't waiting for their food--they were **well into their meals**. It was around **10:20 AM** when our waiter finally came over and said, *"Your food will be out shortly."* Our food finally arrived at approximately **10:25 AM--an hour and a half after we arrived!** Unfortunately, some of my family members were visiting from out of town and had plans to go to the **Obama Presidential Center** after breakfast. Because of the extremely long wait, they had to leave immediately after eating and couldn't enjoy the rest of the day with us as planned. So, unfortunately, our experience was: Poor service Rude and inattentive waiter Unaccommodating management No apology or attempt to resolve the situation Family unnecessarily separated 1 1/2-hour wait for our food** The only reason I'm giving Dawn AM Eatery **one star** is because the food itself was decent. For a family gathering of 16 people, this was a very disappointing experience. We came together to enjoy breakfast and spend time with family, including relatives visiting from out of town. Good Food, but the Customer Service Was Unacceptable My family and I ate at Dawn's Eateries on Saturday morning, August 8, 2026, and unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. From the moment we checked in, we were met with an unpleasant attitude at the hostess area. Thankfully, our waitress initially greeted us warmly, and the food itself was good. However, the customer service issues quickly overshadowed the meal. We ordered a coffee and a latte but were brought two coffees instead. After waiting approximately 20 minutes to have the issue corrected, our server explained that she would get the manager because the situation was out of her control. Unfortunately, the manager's response made the experience even worse. Instead of approaching our table professionally and trying to resolve a simple issue, she came across as rude, dismissive, condescending, and argumentative. My Uncle attempted to explain what had happened, but rather than listening and acknowledging our concerns, her demeanor felt very defensive and unprofessional. Eventually, we simply wanted to make sure the correct drink was made. As the manager of an establishment, I would expect someone to de-escalate a situation, listen to the customer, and find a reasonable solution not make customers feel as though they are the problem for bringing an issue to their attention. The food was good, but when you are paying good money to dine somewhere, you expect both good food AND good service. Unfortunately, we only received one of those. Lastly, the restroom situation was also surprising. The restaurant does not appear to have its own dedicated restroom for customers. We were given a key and/or instructed to go knock on a separate restroom door, which was inconvenient and not what we expected from the overall dining experience. I really wanted to enjoy Dawn's Eateries, especially because the food was good, but the attitude and lack of professionalism we experienced particularly from management left a very negative impression. I would have given this place 4 stars but I strongly dislike restaurants with a "whole party must be present before we seat you policy". We made a reservation and my friend arrived before me. Mind you we are visiting this area and aren't sure about parking and I have a baby so coordinating those things can make you delayed. Needless to say my friend was unable to be seated until we arrived. Once I did arrive it still took about 15 minutes to actually be seated because the hostess is backed up helping other people. I've been here a few times, and they never disappoint! The ambiance is so bright and inviting. I love how the place is decorated. The bar is full, and they make great drinks as well. The servers are great and attentive. The food does not disappoint! I love the pot roast and jalapeño cheddar grits. That is sooooo good you cannot go wrong ordering that. I've also had the fried catfish on top of the jalapeño cheddar grits, and it was delicious as well! The French toast is very good as well. I tried the fried chicken for the first time during my last visit, and it was impressed. Overall, this is a nice establishment with good food options. They serve breakfast all day, so you don't have to go at a certain time of day to try it. I recommend booking a reservation during the weekends because they can get pretty busy. I'd been to Dawn once before and recommended to my friends from out of town that we go there for brunch before heading to the Obama Presidential Center. I regret going to Dawn and wish I patronized another establishment. We were seated at 10:30am, received water and waited. Orders were taken at 11am. Had nothing but water until about 11:15. At that point, my friend's 6yo son's food came out with our biscuit basket because she specifically requested it come out asap so he could eat. Then we waited. And waited. Had to call attention to our table so we could request utensils for her son and ourselves. We kept waiting to the point where we debated letting our server know to cancel everything. Our tickets for the OPC were 12:15 and we didn't want to risk being extremely late. As we were having this talk, food came out at 12:05. Unfortunately, we could not enjoy it because of the abysmal service, and needing to eat quickly to leave and make it to the center. And they had the nerve to tell us before we were seated that there was a 90-minute table limit. My friend and I ordered the fried catfish and we enjoyed it. Her partner ordered the southern dish and did not finish, lost his appetite. Mac and cheese side was good. Yams were not. I felt embarrassed for recommending this place to my close friend who came with her family from the east coast. The food was solid, though I'm personally not a fan of catfish or chicken fried in egg, it can take away from the seasoning for me (just my opinion). Portions were generous. I've been to Don A.M. Eatery twice now. The first time I tried the salmon croquettes with garlic/butter rice both were pretty good. On my second visit, I had the shrimp and grits with added jalapeños, and wow... easily the best shrimp and grits I've ever had! And I've had a lot. The jalapeño added so much flavor without being spicy...absolutely delicious and worth going back for. The deviled eggs with shrimp were really tasty, though the portion of shrimp felt like a bit much. I also tried the banana pudding pancakes, which weren't for me...the pudding flavor just didn't hit. The ambiance is cute and airy, with pink bar seating and a clean feel, though the non booth floor space is a little tight. Service was slow and I had to ask for things more than once, and parking in the area is tough. Yesterday Z was our waiter again! He's a great attentive waiter! The place is always clean and the ambiance very cute! I love the pink chairs at the bar and the cute turquoise glasses at the tables. I went on a Thursday morning but I'm sure on the weekend a reservation is required. You will have to drive around to find street parking. The place looks really nice inside. Refreshing homey dinner with innovative takes on classic Southern dishes. For my appetizer, i got the biscuit basket. Truly some of the best biscuits I have had, they were moist, flakey and fluffy. Hot honey was house made and was soooooo potent/flavorful. I could eat this everyday. My main was the Chicken and Cornbread french toast. The Cornbread french toast is something I didn't know I needed in my life - truly delectable. The crispy and juicy fried chicken had a flavorful crust.
