This is ONE asian owned business that should be added to the list of places to AVOID if your skin is brown. I observed disrespectful behavior from the owner towards respectful patrons (of Indian descent). Thankfully an asian couple arrived and offered to help. It was their first visit to Chao's Strawberries like it was for me and my family. They talked to the owner about the line of people waiting and she eagerly came out to serve the asian couple at the end of the line-- until she realized that the asian couple insisted we get service first as we had been waiting 15+ minutes. She walked away from the counter refusing us all service. My children were hurt by this experience and it pained me to have to explain to them what happened. I will never patronize this establishment again and I highly encourage others and allies to do the same. read more

Such a fun experience with a toddler. They are one of the smaller farms but the strawberries are so sweet. Each adult has to pick a minimum of 2 pounds each- $4 a pound which is not hard to do at all. We brought our 2 year old who had so much fun picking berries. Definitely recommend! If you want, you can purchase already picked strawberries for $4.50 a pound which we did to give to some family. They enjoyed as well! read more

I frequent their stand at the corner of Byron highway and highway 4. My grandmother lives in Discovery Bay and has convinced me these are the best strawberries around. I've never been to any strawberry farms in the East Bay before. Both the farm and the parking lot are small. It was very crowded over the weekend, which may have contributed to the lack of strawberries I saw. The remaining strawberries are small. I'm not sure how, but by the end, my son was almost entirely covered in dirt from the muddy route. Even for grownups, getting about was challenging. They take payment and, something I had never seen before, they have a minimum weight requirement for each adult. My experience did not live up to my expectations. read more

The BEST strawberries I've ever had in my life. We came here twice to pick strawberries because they're soooo good. The strawberries at Chao's are so sweet and the price per pound is reasonable. They have both large and small strawberries. We saw lots other people picking the biggest strawberries, but personally I love the smaller ones since I feel like they're sweeter and easier to just pop in your mouth. We will be back every year. We've been coming here since we moved to the Bay Area. Our first time here was in 2022 when it was Chan's Fruit Stand. Chao's Strawberries has similar rules to the previous owner. Bring your own bucket/box or purchase one. There is also a minimum weight to purchase per person. I recently went here in late March and they let us in 15 minutes early and appreciated not having to wait in our car for them to let us in. Tons and tons of strawberries to pick. The kids will have a blast walking up and down the rows in the strawberry field. Head to the back of the field and you will find much larger and darker strawberries as opposed to the front. Be sure to follow the rules: no water allowed, no bags allowed, no eating the fruit allowed. Also, be prepared to spend a little more than you would at the grocery store. However, also be prepared to get better quality of berries. read more

They are very strict with their policies. No purses/backpacks, no bags of any kind, including green compostable produce bags. You have to buy their boxes and pay by the pound. The prices are not exorbitant, but we did run up the tab to more than $40 for strawberries. It is a lovely experience to have with the kids and a little bit out-of-the-way but I wouldn't hesitate to come back. My only suggestion to folks would be to come prepared with an icebox, or some thing to keep your strawberries from spoiling. Also, they do not let you enter with any water of any kind, even though the weather can get pretty warm in Brentwood, so keep that in mind. read more

I took my family, including 3 kids(5, 3 and 1 y.o) to Chao's Strawberries on Saturday. It was about an hour drive from where we lived in the South Bay, but we found that it was well worth it. The parking lot is fairly small for the amount of visitors we saw. Most people parked on the side of the road, which can be somewhat daunting. As the street is fairly narrow for two cars to go in opposite directions and some of that space is taken up by the parked cars. We had roughly a 1/4 mile walk. Once we were inside, an employee made sure we understood the rules, such as what to pick and not to use nippers/scissors. You can bring your own cardboard boxes from what we saw with other patrons, but they also sell medium sized boxes for 50 cents each. Our kids really enjoyed going down the aisles looking for the "brightest and reddest" strawberries to pick. We spent roughly 90 minutes in total there and picked a little bit over 10lbs on strawberries. I believe the going rate is around $3.50/lb. They also sell an array of veggies and honey products as well. If you do not feel like picking your own strawberries, they sell pre-picked baskets as well. For visitors, i would recommend that they understand the parking situation and that they should bring some type of hat or umbrella to keep shaded. Brentwood weather is slightly hotter than those closer to the Bay area. It was a great time for the family strawberries were sweet and our kids have asked to go back in the near future. read more

This Strawberry Farm use to be the famous Chan's Fruit Stand. The old owner retired and this passed down in the family. I'm so happy that they kept growing the same strawberry variety has Chan's. They are the sweetest strawberries I've had in the Bay Area. Plus at $3/lbs, that's a steal! All the people at the stand are very nice. There's a pretty big parking lot, and you can also park along the street. Make sure to read the rules in advance. Minimum of 2 lbs per adult is not hard to meet at all. The Strawberries are so yum and look so big and pretty, we always end up with a box above 5lbs. All the other rules on no bag and no water was standard in Chan's days too. I don't know why the previous bad review was so surprised about this. It's to prevent people from washing and eating the strawberries before paying. We all know people can eat a lot of strawberries. Although it's a lot of fun to eat as you pick (we do this more with Cherries), but all those unpaid fruits will hurt the farmers margins, especially given this place is so popular and sells out at 11am or earlier. In my experience picking with my 4 year old toddler, you really don't need a water bottle since you are only picking for 30 mins. Make sure to get here early, by 9:30 am for good strawberries selection. This is a very popular farm, there will likely be a long line to get in. It is also convenient for the farm to have a hose and mud wash off station, and a port-a-potty. read more

Thank you for the reply Chao's owner. I don't know whether Chan's had the same rules because we were never made aware of them and definitely did not have to be screened at the gate. Perhaps, Chan's didn't feel the need to enforce those rules. It really does take away the family/neighborly feel from the experience. The rules scream we a strictly business here and as such it is hard to justify spending 30-45 minutes in the hot sun without water doing the picking and saving the owner labor cost if it is no longer a pleasant experience. Best Straberries around. New owners are very nice and preserving what Mr. Chan was doing for many years.

My family stopped by and enjoyed how wide the space and the abundance of strawberries. My family and I know to walk far into the patch to get away from the people. Also we know that the biggest and best strawberries are usually away from the entrance. Anyway great price per pound and the catch is THEY ONLY TAKE CASH. I was short a couple of bucks because I forgot and the generous lady gave me the strawberries! SWEET DELICIOUS and nice owners makes this a tradition that will live on! read more

Please do yourself a favor and find another strawberry farm in Brentwood. This farm has ways to go to be a better place. The farm used to be very nice good place (I think in past it was called Chang's farm or something like that). I guess the owner recently has changed and a lot of things got very bad here... 1. No bags are allowed. I mean, not even purse for holding a phone. Or diapers for kids... What is a person has a medical condition? I guess they may think people will put strawberries into purses or backpacks ? :) 2. No water bottles are allowed. I've complained about it on Instagram and they said that bottles can be left on their property or people could use water to wash the strawberries. Well, isn't it part of the experience, to go on farm and try a fruit? How much each person can/will really eat in field? Even in grocery store you're allowed to try food first before buying. 2.1 They don't sell water. If they did, that would at least make some sense. 2.2. I've seen crew members having water in the fields, but customers are not allowed. Discrimination 2.3 If they concerned about bottles to be left on property, then at least allow to bring your own bottles. 3. They seem to water field couple hours before Saturday when they opened it to public, which made the whole picking experience very muddy and unpleasant. I get it that strawberries need water, but could you water it a day before, OR at least 12+ hours before opening it to public so that water soaks and mud dries out. p.s. I posted similar complain on their instagram page and they banned me and removed my comment. Very respectful... Of well, at least by doing so they agree that they are wrong and the can't find a better response other than deleting my comment. read more

I have to say this is a great place to visit. I was surprised to see a negative review here, which I don't think it's true. I've been a loyal customer for years with Chan's strawberries before this business acquired Chan's. When Mr. Chan ran this business, they also banned bags and water bottles in the field. I visited twice after their opening this year, and I felt the same as before in terms of how they run business. The only change I noticed was that the current owners were more friendly. They keep the high quality of strawberries this place has offered over the years and I had a wonderful time with my two little kids. I know a few other strawberry farms in Brentwood and visited every site, but this has been my favorite. read more
