Disclaimer that I didn't come here to buy specific ingredients to make a Hispanic meal; rather I just wanted to check out a local, independent supermarket. That aside, let me summarize my thoughts by saying: I'd come again. And again. And...well, you get the idea. My Spanish isn't great, but the staff largely understood and spoke English, and were pleasant and happy to help me find what I needed. The prices were quite agreeable. I bought 17 items, consisting of 3 large (600 ml) beverages, 2 smaller beverages, 3 hefty cans of tuna soup, 2 large palettes of canned sardines in tomato sauce, 6 tins of canned sausages, and 1 cup noodle. This, in total, cost me just under 55 dollars. 3.24 dollars per item, on average, is hardly something to complain about. And the quality of the goods was impressive, too. - The beverages I bought were five different varieties of the Vive100 energy drink. I've only had a chance to try the original (all green) and Fusion (red) versions, but let me just say: they taste far more natural than any other caffeinated energy drink I've had. Maybe it's the natural cane sugar, but the flavoring just feels smoother and less aggressively "chemical" as well. - The tuna soups I bought were "encebollado de atún," and contained whole chunks of tuna, savory broth, potatoes, onions, and some other greens and spices. For only about 3-4 dollars and 224-250 calories, they were incredibly filling and wholesome. The two brands were Real and Manabí, and I recommend you try both. - Of the canned sardines in tomato sauce, I've yet to try the Real brand, but La Sirena is excellent: hearty, meaty, flavorful, and barely metallic at all. I don't recommend the Iberia brand (which Chaparral carries, but I didn't buy), as the fish is tough, and the sauce is thin and tastes more of metal than tomato. - The canned sausages were Rica Rondo brand vienna sausages. Not the best vienna sausages I've had (Libby's tends to be less salty, more tender, and more flavorful), but still a good enough pick-me-up snack that can easily be consumed on the go. The parking is no issue. Even though the lot (located to the right of the main entrance) is on the smaller side, I've never had trouble finding a spot. Once you go to the entrance, you'll see a sign that says backpacks, among other things, are not permitted inside. No problem, since they offer shopping baskets and give offer bags (for 20 cents) at checkout. Three things you'll want to consider before going: - One, the supermarket does have a "structured flow" for traffic; aside from the pockets of products near the entrance, the frozen food section, and the meat section, all aisles are one-direction only. This can be unintuitive to people who are used to typical American supermarkets, but takes little time to get adjusted to. - Two, foods are arranged first by country of origin, and then by product type, which means that you might see similar products in different parts of the store. - Three, there are no restrooms available for customer use. read more

As someone who lived in Miami, where multicultural food options are everywhere -- Colombian, Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Cuban, you name it -- moving to Northern California was a bit of a culture shock (and let's be honest... a price shock too ). If you're Colombian, Latin American, or just someone who loves exploring authentic international foods beyond the usual options, this place is 100% worth a visit. Chorizo, arepas, Aguardiente Antioqueño, Jet, Hit, papitas de pollo, choco ramo... we found it all here. Never mind the high price cuz we know it's super hard to get some of these things in the US. The staff are all helpful, the store is laid out well and organized by country which made our trip way easier. The store was also clean and smelled good, local food vendors were outside selling home cooked empanadas, arepas and lechona. Glad to have stumbled across such a well stocked store even if it set us back $250, lol. read more

i don't have any pics. but i can share my experience every time i do go here. i've gotten some cool things while just browsing there. i've gotten some plantain chips from honduras, which you can really get the ones i'm taking about from another store but that's not the point. they got a good selection of colombian food items. is it a little on the pricey side? sure. it's all good tho. the store inside itself is a decent size. i just haven't looked at every single isle. i wanna see what items they have from portugal and spain. for service? cashiers seem alright. nothing to complain about. overall i do recommend this store if you're looking something from like let's say Argentina or something like that. you'll find some good stuff. read more

This place was okay I was looking for soursop fruit and they did have it but it was frozen and had a ton of sugar and preservatives added to it. Went to a Vietnamese supermarket instead and found what I was looking for. There's a good selection of other foods and a deli/bakery section with chicharrones and more. Food wise, this store has aisles and aisles of Latino heritage products from various countries. There's products from Peru, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and so much more As a chef, this place is ingredient heaven I also tried the chicharron that's available to purchase by the pound. I was full from lunch, but whenever there's pork chicharron, I have to try it. Truth be told, I was disappointed. This chicharron was very dry and didn't have the crispiest skin, if that makes sense. The feel.of the store very alive with an array ethnic backgrounds doing their shopping. I thought this provided a unique vibe. My girlfriend is Peruvian, so we went for some Peruvian ingredients, which were quite bountiful. I'm still learning what ingredients are used in Peruvian cooking, so it's always an educational experience for me to look through the aisles of dry goods. This store also has a freezer section for hard to find imported items. So, if there's something specific to your needs, this might be the place for you. read more

Everytime we go to a bigger city then where we leave we love to look up a Hispanic market where we can get international snacks. I'm half Colombian and I used to live there so when I run into snacks I am a happy camper! Everyone in that market is super friendly! The service was great. Really good supermarket. The parking is pretty good. I've never had an issue with parking. They have a variety of groceries for different cultures such as Peruvian food & more! I'm Mexican and I can find many of the items or spices I'm looking for here. They also have a bakery in here so if you're looking for pan dulce, they got you. But the MAIN REASON WHY I love coming here because their carnitas are fire!! I love getting their costillas as well here! I usually get their costillas and enjoy them with a good salsa, fresh tortillas and a slice of queso fresco. They used to sell gorditas de carnitas but due to covid I'm not sure if they were closed. I'm not latin! But this is a wonderland of goods from Latin America, perhaps the biggest that I have found. I'm obsessed with this place because they carry such an extensive assortment of goods that you can't find anywhere else. I came here to get La Saltena empanada wrappers because I'm a pro at empanada making! My Latin Bf seems to think so too lol Every time I come here I can't help but want to buy everything. Each aisle is organized into a specific countries goods so best believe I was all up in the Mexican aisle trying to buy my goods and spices. I wanted to make ropa vieja, chicken empanadas, and choripan and I found really good ingredients there. They carry a huge selection of Goya products. I'm also very satisfied with the customer service here every time I was browsing the aisles I had at least one of the staff ask me if I'm doing okay. I go to Chapparal whenever I want my Latin foods and I must say they are handling the Covid crisis nicely! They don't have any real system of " social distancing " or mandating sanitation because people are doing it ON THEIR OWN here. Chapparal Super has sanitary wipes as you walk into the store for you to clean your hands with and it seems what to do to protect themselves from Covid because they all have their masks, they keep themselves 6 ft apart from you, and it's clean as possible given the circumstances. They had the Nicaraguan soda I was looking for. The only thing I didn't have was enough money to buy as many as I wanted cos they had a BOATLOAD this time around. I can't even get a plane ticket to Managua right now but they have Nicaraguan soda that you can't readily get anywhere else in the Bay Area? I've been obsessed with rare and tropical fruit lately, so I stopped in to see what kinds of frozen fruit they had. They had a bunch: coconut tamarillo tamarind acai with passion fruit acai with guava acai with mango naranjilla chirimoya / cherimoya mamey nance / nanche guava mango soursop / guanábana passion fruit blackberry lúcuma curuba / banana passion fruit The brands are La Nuestra (Montalvan's) and Goya. Unfortunately, the availability seems to be a little sporadic; they haven't had any nanche the past couple of times I've visited. They also had two brands of lúcuma ice cream. And they occasionally sell fresh rare fruits like mamey sapote, chico sapote / níspero, guanábana, and pitaya - in little cardboard boxes by the cashier - but these can be expensive! read more

I have been looking for a supermarket that sold Salvadoran food but I really wasn't able to find one where they had an abundance of selections. Ever since finding this store, I have been indulging in my salvi snacks and food more often. This supermarket has frozen marañon, frozen & fresh loroco, a whole section of salvi snacks, quesadillas, and Zemitas. Along with the variety of salvi food they have, this store has food from all of Latin America! It's a smallish store, but has everything you could want. In all honesty, I only go there for the self-serve pan dulce. I stop by whenever I happen to be passing through the area and just let the impulse take over. Their empanadas are my weakness. Fresa and manzana. That's all I need. I'm pretty simple. I've tried some of the other varieties and they're just ok. As far as the rest of the store goes, it reminds me of the type of place that once had dream. The exterior doesn't make any sense. The interior looks like they don't even try anymore. The only market in the Bay Area I found this far that have the widest variety of Latin American foods. I love going there to pick up ingredients to prepare my favorite Peruvian dishes, Argentine sausages, chicharrón, Lucuma ice cream, Maracuya (passion fruit) pulp for smoothies. After trying/calling almost 10 other stores, finally I called Chapparral and they said they had frozen passionfruit! Score! I'm from Peru and was looking to make some empanadas but where i live there is no stores with peruvian ingredients, i drove 45 min out and was happy to buy lots of peruvian stuff. Mate...glorious, glorious Yerba Mate! This is one of the only places we've found in the area that not only carries this elusive tea in bulk, but carries myriad brands of Mate in bulk! We also found several types of dulce de leche, sardines in tomato sauce, dulce de batata (sweet potato paste) and Cuban Iron Beer (it's really a soda). The store itself is a little rundown, but once we got inside my Argentine hubby and I ran around like kids in a candy store--oohing and ahhing over every little package of Alfajores or other hard-to-find Latin American delicacy.
