Very small and overpriced grocery store. Ive had compared prices among local groceries and everything is twice or more overpriced. Meat department is looks awful bc it doesn't look clean despite they have 5 or so butchers. They also have money transfer services those ladies working there have very bad spelling skills (in Spanish) and make mistakes plus they have an attitude. This pork butt is from Las Palmas Mercado. Smoking it as we speak. I have been shopping thus lil gem for the past 10 years. Not only do they make a killer carnitas, but their produce is beautiful and has everything you need to cook south American. Today I was pleasantly surprised to be stopped at the door and given a $4 card to purchase produce promoting GOOD eating habits for our community. Their taqueria items are all really good but I was really bummed out when I purchased their masa preparada for tamales, its really bad. Ruined a batch of tamales, good thing I didn't make too many. I usually buy the masa preparada from cardenas but I didn't want to drive out since this is my neighborhood market and I really regret getting it here. I've come here 3 or 4 times and today was the last straw. I usually run in quick to get random groceries like mint leaves, tomatoes, etc...One problem I always have is the rude service. It is consistently unpleasant in the same exact way from multiple different workers. They're always nice to the customer before me, speaking Spanish and having a ball. As soon as they see me and start speaking to me, they assume I speak Spanish and speak Spanish to me. I kindly have to let them know I don't speak Spanish. You would think they would apologize for the mistake, but they ALWAYS shoot me a dirty look and continue on with bad service. If this isn't racist, I don't know what is! It's like they're angry at me for being there and not speaking Spanish! I always brushed that off but today was the last straw because it was the first time I ordered a burrito there and let me tell you, it was the worst burrito I've ever had in all of California. I ordered Carne Asada with Pico de Gallo, rice and beans. There was barely any beans and the meat was dry and heavily oversalted. I drank 2 bottles of water to wash it down and now I have a stomach ache. If you're a Spanish speaker, you'll be treated well here. If you're not, go in and see for yourself, they will treat you like trash. Regardless of what you speak though, don't order from the restaurant inside because you will regret it. read more

The money wiring center in the store is a scam. They refuse to send money if you don't let them scanning your photo ID. Even if they agree to Send money for you by only entering some information from your drivers license, they put a hold on the transaction, and ask for scanning my ID when I decided to cancel the transaction. Alma, the person who handled my transaction is very sneaky. When I told her it is illegal to scan drivers licenses into their computers, she did a fake transaction, and copied my ID when I canceled the transaction. I started coming here out of laziness to get out of cooking rice and beans (estilo Mexicano). There is a little Mexican restaurant inside of the market. Anything from carnitas to tacos, flautas, chicharrónes, menudo, and almost all platos mexicanos. Wait there is more... The carnicería is superb. I love all the cuts if meat, as well as the marinated meat (carne preparada) that is ready for tacos. Not to mention the mass for tamales. I love it here, made to order. It's typical to have whatever you order loaded full of flavor, slightly crispy all cooked together and balanced. When you open this sucker up your like,"holly sheep shit" I have to get a handle on this big sucker cause it's busting at the seams. UPDATE 8/8/08: The need for puffy tacos got the better of me, so off I went to Las Palmas. After securing my ground beef (in San Antonio, way back when, puffy's were made with ground beef), I noticed "Taco Meat" next to the ground beef. The label on the bag doesn't say what the Spanish name is, so you'll just need to get the "Taco Beef/Meat". It's little chunks of cut up beef, probably sirloin - perfect for Carne Asada tacos. So we came home and made the ground beef. I did cheat and attempted to use prepared masa (for tamales), rather than making the puffy taco dough myself. Didn't work out so well, but the kids liked them. (I had backup tortilla's). Great Dinner. Okay, okay, so today, I threw some of the chopped Taco Meat on my stovetop grill (flat side), and grilled it up (dash of oil) with some salt, pepper and hit it with a little lemon and lime juice and fresh garlic at the end. Yeah baby - that's what I'm talking about! I will never cut up meat into little pieces again!!! Oh yeah - you must also get their Salsa Roja - so good. ORIGINAL 8/7/08: This is a great little gem in this neck of the woods. There are so few Hispanic markets in West San Jose and sometimes the drive to Mi Pueblo is just not on my schedule. (I also like stopping here after a ginormous lunch at Amato's.) First off: This place is clean!!! (Clean is very important to me. You see, I have OCD that translates into germophobia for me.) They are small, but well stocked. I totally appreciate that the fresh meat in the meat case is kept covered with plastic wrap (see OCD disclaimer above). Their chorizo just rocks. They are also one of the few places close that I can get flap meat. I am totally craving puffy tacos right now, so I need to trek on over for some prepared masa. a pretty good burrito. the boyfriend and I couldn't agree on what to eat so I went here and he went somewhere else. I got the super burrito with carne asada and it was really good and really filling. The carne asada is really good! They actually grill their burritos after they are made which I liked. I'm definitely going to go back soon and try the tacos. The store itself was small but seemed to have the basics they also have a whole meat counter where there were steak fajitas, chicken fajitas, different kinds of taco meats, steaks, chicken, shrimp, etc. They also were selling salsas, cheeses, and guacamole which all looked really good. Finally stopped in. The fresh meat area is clean and has a variety of beef and chicken. I purchased a 1/2 pound of the seasoned beef to make taco's. If you need dinner in a heartbeat, this is so quick to fry up and make a meal. $4.99 for a pound. 1 pound could make enough taco's for four medium hungry guys. Purchased a small stack of mini corn tortilla's, called La Flor Del Valley, Que Bien, Taquito's, $3.99 and the requisite long green onion from Mexico. The veggie section was well stocked, orderly and fresh looking. And I found a small can of Red Pato Chile sauce. This is a fine and flavorful chile sauce, with a little heat. But if you like more hot, then get the Yellow can; this heat is Southern California style. On another note, I even found some Mojo sauce; with which to marinate my pork chops, to make cuban style Lechon. My favorite brand is called : " La Lechonera" Mojo Criollo. Tip: as a side dish, slice up a big white round onion, then marinate with this Mojo Criollo for five minutes. Dee lish, ala Cubano! Customer service: fine and friendly. In the interest of full disclosure I should mention that this is the only Carniceria I've been to. However I've been to many groceries and I prefer small local grocers to large chains. I feel like they've got a better relationship with local growers and usually sell better quality produce at lower prices than Safeway or Lucky's. I really like the pico de gallo they sell, as well as fresh Mexican cheese, and lots of options for hot sauce and dried chiles. They have a decent looking meat counter for a small store but I haven't tried it out yet. They are located on the same plaza as the Slavic Shop so I got to try both at once. read more

BAD SERVICE today in the prepared food section. First I asked for two tortas and the cook mentioned that I would get a free soda if I paid one dollar more for each order, the thing is, I don't drink canned soda and prefer water. Therefore, I prefer to pass on the "free soda" and pay for the tortas only. The cook was confused that I wouldn't want the free soda even though I spoke Spanish. After a few other customers that came after me were taken care of, she finally worked on my 2 tortas de asada. I think the cook was nervous as I needed to ask if she was going to put cheese and beans on the torta. Looks to me there is no standard way of preparing a torta here. I recently had a torta of machaca three days ago (Tuesday I think) and another cook prepared it with cheese and avocado. The cheese was deliciously soft and a great experience reason why I took my son for a treat, it depends on the cook if you ask me. This is my go to Mex store since Chavez and Mi Pueblo aren't as close to me. The meat selection is good and the carne preparada has always been tasty. This is one of the best perks of living in the Bay Area. Everything in this market is awesome. The Carnitias, Pork Verde Chili, Chicken, Ranchero Carne Asada, Tacos, Gorditas are the bomb. The selection is endless at good prices. The cheeses are all top notch and the produce rocks. This is one of the few places I can find Apple soda. You might want to learn a little Spanish before you shop there. In the past some employees didn't understand what I was saying, which is fine, since it's their community market.
