I visited Charleston Alexander to sell a gold wedding band after hearing their advertisements about buying gold and paying top dollar. The experience was disappointing. The store was nearly empty on a Saturday afternoon, and the evaluation felt rushed. The employee used an old calculator, came back with a "best I can do" style offer of $250, and provided very little explanation for how the number was determined. The offer seemed low, so I left and got a second opinion. Another local gold buyer tested and weighed the same ring and offered $400 cash, which I accepted. I understand businesses need to make a profit, but a $150 difference on the same item is significant. My advice is to stay far away. read more

The sales rep made it seem like it would take a long time (like months) which wouldn't be ready in time for our anniversary in 2024. However, a year or so later I ended up returning to the store where I met Karen. I explained what I was trying to create for an anniversary present for my wife. Karen worked with me from my initial design throughout the entire process from start to finish. Keeping me updated as well as presenting ideas and incorporating my input to ensure the outcome didn't deter from my concept. Our experience with Charles Alexander started out good with a ring that's fine, but went down hill fast. My husband then surprised me with a bracelet that costs thousands of dollars. It didn't fit properly. I've never been able to wear it. Charles Alexander has a very short return policy. It's tricky because jewelry is an emotional gift. It's tough to talk about returning it so close to the holiday... and ruin the happy feelings. So, sadly I kept it and have never worn it. Again, my husband surprised me with a diamond necklace. This time the necklace is so delicate it disappears. Can't even see that there is a necklace on. Again, short return policy, and I'm stuck with an expensive piece of jewelry that is basically worthless. When I purchased my wife's wedding band and engagement ring here, I was informed that they would provide lifetime cleaning, polishing, and appraisal free of charge. When I took both in today I was informed it would take a week and a half to clean the two ring...okay. Then the person walked over to a gentlemen and came back to me and I was told it would be $160 to clean the two rings. I walked in with no idea what style, what size, or what type of diamond/ring I wanted. My fiancé gave me no hints or help prior to me going shopping. Charleston Alexander absolutely exceeds expectations. If, like me, you are neither a jeweler nor a gemologist, buying a diamond is all about trust. There are a shocking number of ways to be ripped off, and dealing with a well- regarded specialty diamond jeweler is excellent protection. True, the showroom lacks the luxe atmosphere of a Tiffany or Cartier,but its salespeople are kind, knowledgeable and honorable, the value is incomparable, and you are not paying for a name. After a major loss, I considered going to Tiffany to replace my ring. The lovely saleswoman sourced three very nice and one beautiful emerald cut ring from stores across the country. Alas, the one I fell in love with was way over budget and, more critically, I was shocked to learn that should I want to upgrade the stone or setting at some future date, I'd have to spend twice the original amount. I'd dealt with Charleston Alexander before-- their saleswoman worked hard to find perfectly matched diamonds to replace studs that had been stolen, and an independent appraiser valued them significantly higher than the purchase price. But the ring I was replacing was so special-- still, it was worth the drive to see what they could do for me. Salesman Rick Ramadan is charming, warm, kind and funny--like the uncle you wished you had. His boss, John Sabet, is consummately professional, low-key, incredibly knowledgeable and absolutely passionate about his work: sourcing stones and designing diamond jewelry. After a shaky start ( I didn't love the first stone found, which was well within my stated budget) and permission to reach a bit higher, a gorgeous stone was found in Israel. Problem was, we had to buy it sight unseen. I demurred. Rick disappeared to negotiate. We still had to buy the stone, but if it was not as fabulous as the GIA report and the video indicated, I could refuse it and they would keep searching for me. I didn't sleep for two weeks, but the fact that Sabet was prepared to put himself in jeopardy was comforting-- he clearly trusted his sources. Stone arrived and, gentle readers, took my breath away. Larger by half a carat than Tiffany's . Higher Grade color and clarity. Excellent cut, polish, symmetry. In short, a better stone by all objective criteria. And significantly less expensive. Long story short my wife was shaking out bed sheets from the laundry when prong failed and the diamond dislodged. Luckily for us this was in the bedroom so we were able to recover the diamond. I contacted Charleston Alexander and they asked me to send it in for repair. I took it to another jeweler for a second opinion and was informed the prongs were too small to fit the diamond! They replaced the head with the proper setting and the diamond is much more secure. I have called the company and been referred to DWAYNE who will not return my calls after multiple attempts. My one star rating is based on poor, dismissive service, shoddy workmanship and lack of accountability. My fiancé purchased the diamond online and chose to have CA set it. To be fair, initial customer service was prompt, helpful and attentive. However, that was the end of it. The original ring size 4.25, was tight to say the least. A sales rep at CA told me if I sized it up my actual ring size of 4.5, the ring would "fall off my finger for sure because I have no knuckles". She basically convinced/scared me to keep it as is. When I inquired about the dents on the top/sides of the prongs, she said that would take two weeks to fix. We went to many other jewelers who unanimously advised me to size up the ring. Fast forward to actual resize/prong fixes with CA, a two-week job. I confirmed in store when dropping off the ring with Karen twice that it should be sized up to 4.5. A week later, I check the receipt to confirm pick up date and see that she wrote down 4.75. I called CA to inquire about the discrepancy, they had not started work on my ring and states that their notes say 4.75 but will correct on their end. When my fiancé calls to confirm the ring will be ready for pick up, he is told "Yes, we are working on it now, it will be sized up to 4.75 and ready at 4pm today". Truly unbelievable, they not only made the same mistake again but also started working on it on the very last day! What was the point of leaving the ring for two weeks? We were assured by manager that the ring will be 4.5 and prongs will be fixed. When we went to pick up the ring, there was a significant scratch on the band which I had them buff out. This wasn't done without advice from Karen, who lectured me about how rings are meant to be worn and scratches will happen. Does that mean the store should give me a scratched ring from the beginning? Upon closer examination, after leaving, I find that the prongs still have not been fixed! They had only resized the ring and ignored all the other requests. When we call, Rick tells my fiancé it was the best the jeweler could do...meaning what? He didn't even bother to ask us to bring it in to see what they could do. We were told two different things; Karen claimed they took the stone off to resize the band while Rick said they never touched the stone. Where is the professionalism, accountability and customer service? My setting is a simple band, no pave diamonds or special design with a solitaire diamond and they could even get that right. The experience started off promising, but has turned into a 5+ week ordeal, involving multiple visits to Charleston Alexander because of Patricia's inattention to detail and unprofessional demeanor. Our initial meeting was pleasant and helpful, notwithstanding the fact that the ring sample ring style I'd ordered hadn't arrived. There was a great selection of ring styles and I narrowed it down to two that I liked. We found a great deal on a diamond and put down a deposit that day. Our second meeting wasn't great. Patricia didn't seem to remember anything about what we'd discussed the week before so it was like starting from square one. The ring style I ordered came in, I loved the style, but wanted the diamonds to be a bit bigger. We got a quote, but I had to explain multiple times what I wanted. We then tried to get a few hundred knocked off of the price - no harm in asking, right? Wrong. She explained in a raised voice why they were professionals, they didn't negotiate, etc. Talk about unprofessional. We did end up getting some money off, but she was rude. Patricia called back a few days later, saying she explained the design to the jeweler, but he couldn't do it. Bring on meeting #3, where she brought the jeweler out, I explained what I wanted, he said it'd be no problem. "Wow," I thought, "We just wasted time coming out here because Patricia apparently couldn't convey what I wanted." Visit #4 was quick. She got our meeting time wrong, but we viewed the wax, decided it wasn't exactly right, but it was good enough -- after all, this was our FOURTH visit to explain something that wasn't hard. ...that was 2.5 weeks ago. My ring apparently has been sitting in Falls Church for four days because Patricia mistakenly thought we were going by to view the ring. Nevermind that we were charged $30+ for expedited delivery. More than anything, I was disappointed that what should've been a happy event turned into such a process all due to a sales person who apparently doesn't care about the couple she was helping or doing her job well. UPDATE: Someone at Charleston Alexander saw this review and Patricia contacted us to apologize. While she still had to be reminded of my now-husband's name and our mailing address, she did use her credit card points to give us a restaurant gift card. Charleston Alexander was probably the 10th jeweler that I had visited in my 4 month long hunt for an engagement ring. When I first stepped into the store, I got the expected amount of attention I would from a reputable jewelry store: a warm welcome and service from a sales rep with an overly perky personality. By the time I had set foot into the store, I had narrowed down the specs I was looking for in a diamond down to about a dozen very specific requirements in terms of GIA specs and dimensions. Given how specific I was, I was baffled to find that Charleston Alexander had not one, but two diamonds that matched what I was looking for, and at pricing that could match if not beat similar diamonds on BlueNile. I ended up picking the larger of the two diamonds, and to their credit, every other jeweler that I talked to, told me that it was an excellent bargain, and admitted they couldn't beat their pricing. Customer service at Charleston Alexander was also top notch. It was a Thursday night when I decided that I was going to propose less than 36 hours later, on Saturday. The next morning at about 9am, I called and asked if I purchased a diamond and setting now, could they have it set and ready for me to propose by 2pm. Their immediate answer was "Done", and bumped my request to the top of their priority list. Now that's putting your customer first. Every other place I asked, said it would take a few days. We went to Charleston Alexander during their semi-annual sale, looking for a cushion cut diamond. Well, they had 200 in the store (this is a lot of cushions, most places don't have any). On loose diamonds, the sale was 20% off of GIA cert stones, 30% off for EGL certs, and they didn't have any AGS cert stones. A word on certifications: GIA is the standard, AGS is also very good (a little more strict than GIA in some respects, and a little less strict in others) -- but with an EGL cert.... Just ask to see an EGL stone and a GIA stone side by side -- ask for the same color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Make your own judgments when you see and EGL and GIA together! Back to the cushions: Our sales lady was not aware that there are three primary types of cushion cuts (old mine, modern, and modified) and kept on insisting that in her 20 years in the diamond business she had never heard of them -- this tells me that she has never looked at a GIA cert -- because the cert says "Old Mine Brilliant", "Cushion Brilliant", or "Modified Cushion Brilliant". (FYI, they only carry cushion brilliant, not modified cushion brilliant - this is a good thing, but she should have known without giving us a song and dance.) Lastly, their prices suck. Do some research online before you go in -- as a consumer, you really need to counteract the information that you get from salespeople with competitive pricing information. When we went to the appraiser, he literally pulled up pricescope.com and searched for diamonds in our shape with the appropriate 4c's to price the item. If that's what the appraiser does, that's what you should do too -- before you buy the diamond. read more

I would recommend Charleston Alexander for any of your jewelry purchases. I bought my fiance's engagement ring from CA and could not have been happier. I personally dealt with Connie at the Falls Church location and have nothing but good things to say about her. Buying a diamond ring is an expensive purchase and one that can be pretty intimidating. CA has a large selection of diamonds and settings, so the buying process can be kind of overwhelming. During the entire process, Connie was patient and helpful. I visited several times and she took it upon herself to make sure I was happy with my entire buying experience. One thing to consider when buying a diamond from CA (but really with any jewelry store) is the certification of the diamonds. It seemed like CA sold quite a few EGL Israel certified diamonds. In my research on the Internet, I found that this lab is occasionally soft on their ratings. Do your research and make sure you're OK with an EGL Israel cert, I wasn't but that's just personal preference. All of the EGL diamonds I looked at were beautiful, I just wasn't comfortable with the certification. Anyway, I visited many jewelry stores in the DC-area and did quite a bit of research on-line. Although you do pay a premium for a B&M store, in my mind, it was worth it. read more

It was exactly what I wanted, and Connie worked with him to get exactly what he wanted for me, at the price he wanted. Now, a few months after I got it, the center diamond sounded loose. So they took it for a few days and fixed it. Then one of the 40 tiny side diamonds around the band fell out. This was when we were shopping for custom wedding bands, so the fact that these instances occurred twice within a month was very disappointing. To top it off, Connie left and we were stuck with Stella. She is a nice lady, but didn't relay accurate information between the jeweler and us in terms of what the band would look like. Deciding to propose was the biggest decision I may ever make, but they made the hardware part of it simple. After checking out all the local stores on Yelp, I decided to check Charleston Alexander because of the great reviews. I called ahead to set up an appointment on a day when my (SPOILER ALERT) then-girlfriend/now-fiance(!) was at work, even though walking in without an appointment probably would have been fine mid-day during the week. All of the staff I encountered were friendly (even Yankees-fan Diane), but I was especially wow-ed by the woman with whom I had my appointment, Karen. I had done some preliminary research, but was essentially starting at square one when it came to diamond shopping, and Karen very patiently walked me through the "Four C's", pointing out subtle differences between a variety of stones. After an hour or so, I left feeling infinitely more knowledgeable, excited, and looking forward to coming back later that week with one my fiance's best friends who'd gotten the inside scoop on her preferences. In the meantime, I compared the characteristics and price quotes Karen had given me on three or four stones I was gravitating towards versus similar stones for sale on Blue Nile, and I was pleasantly surprised by how competitively priced Charleston Alexander was. Maybe it's possible to save a couple bucks buying online, but there's no way finding a rock on the web could compare to holding it between your fingerss while a diamond expert points out its nuanced characteristics. My second appointment was just as positive as the first. With the help of the best friend, and Karen's continued patience, we settled on a beautfiul cushion cut stone with a platinum pave (think: blinged-out) setting and I made the purchase. Yes you can learn about the 4c's but at the end of the day how do I know what it looks like in person and if I'm getting a good deal? Well Jana at CA was very helpful and didn't pressure me at all during the whole process. I was able to go in and compare and contrast different diamonds of different quality to get the best value. The nice thing about CA is they have a huge online inventory which the prices are on par with places like bluenile. You also can ask for a 400x 3d video of the exact diamond so no surprises. This put me at ease when purchasing such an expensive piece of jewelry. I asked her to do a search for me and a few weeks later sent me links to a diamond that was within my budget and better specs! While I was there I looked into giving my ring a "face lift "and added a halo to my current setting. Charleston Alexander is without a doubt a place I would return to every time I had the chance. I was scouring jewelers and online for months trying to find the perfect ring for my fiance. I went from store to store thinking what I was looking for was around the next corner. However, I was unable to find it until I came to Charleston Alexander. I started to work with Jana and she helped me to create and make my fiance's ring. She knew exactly what I was looking for and was able to create the image I had in my head on to that ring. It could not have looked any more perfect! From the moment I stepped into Charleston Alexander I knew I was in the right place. They helped me to design the perfect ring. From design to creation to even delivery, everything was perfect. We had a small hiccup in the process where the ring wasn't ready on the day I was hoping it would be. But Dwayne the store manager came to the rescue. He drove over an hour + to my home to hand deliver the ring to me so I had it when I needed it. We then came back for our wedding bands and again the process could not be smoother. It absolutely felt as though we were speaking with friends. They were so happy to show us everything and even give us ideas that we didn't think about. Dwayne and Karen even cleaned all of our rings, gave us new boxes to put them in and let us know that if we wanted to ship them the rings and have them sent back so its in perfect condition for the wedding day they would.
