Martha Middleton Wallace hosted our tour last weekend. She is a trained archeaologist and is overflowing with knowledge of the city. She obviously still enjoys what she does. This is essential for your visit to Charleston. I really liked the pace because she packs a lot into two hours. I particularly liked walking some of the back alleys and the ice cold lemonade at the end of the tour was a treat. Many of the old homes had piazzas (porches) added later and they were built with a slant to allow water to drain off. read more

What a great walking tour. I found myself in Charleston for an extra day following an interview, and I decided to do a tour to see more of the city. There are many tour companies, but I liked what I read about Anne's tour and how she included personal touches. And this was so very true! Anne has a wonderful sense of humor, and she truly makes you feel like you are learning about this fantastic city from a true local! The tour does not feel like one of those tourist-y type gatherings but rather Anne takes you to off-the-grid places you'd never think to visit. Little did we know there was so much to learn about the history of Charleston! My mother (71) and I (42) visited Charleston this past week (late June) and were really looking forward to The History of Charleston Walking Tour mostly because I wanted my mother to see all of the beauty downtown Charleston has to offer. I've been coming to Charleston for the past 10, or so, years and its my favorite place to visit. Mom had never been there, so this was a great opportunity, I thought. Well, we were blown away by how much we learned from Anne during the tour. She was a true historian and learning about her family and ancestry was a bonus that we just couldn't get enough of. Anne's personality drew our group of 15 in at every stop. The icing on the cake was at the end when she led us into a beautiful courtyard owned by her family for a fresh cup of lemonade. The best way to explain this tour is by comparing it to a really good book that you just don't want to put down or that 5-star movie you don't want to end. My mother and I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in getting a refresher "course" on the history of Charleston or families who might be visiting the city for the first time and want a guided tour with an engaging history lesson. I agree with the other commenters on the site. Anne gives a great tour of Charleston. You really get the chance to see the city through the eyes of a local. Anne will show you all the places you'd want to see, peppered in with the back alleys, cobblestone paths, and, believe it or not, a really cool parking lot to round out the experience. Anne takes you through the city and its history and her history as well. Her family has been there for generations. Her family stories tie in to the history of the community- and the tour ends in her family's backyard garden, where lemonade is a welcome relief on during a hot Charleston summer day. Oh, and it is the garden that Prince Charles visited when he came to Charleston sometime after Hugo. If it's good enough for royalty, it's good enough for me I always say. read more

What a wonderful way to discover Charleston! We would never have learned as much or found the hidden gems we experienced on Martha's tour. Her background as an archeologist combined with her personal experiences growing up in Charleston provide an truly authentic feel to this tour. My 9-year-old son especially enjoyed the hidden alleyways. Even in the August heat, the 1.5 mile walk stretched out over 2 hours was an easy one. read more

I was in Charleston last October for a conference and extended my stay to explore family history. We took almost every tour available, but this one is the VERY BEST. Martha even gave additional and in depth information on places we had seen on other tours. She knows and loves her city and she made us love it too. She kept us entertained and hanging on her every word. The concierge at our hotel had not taken the tour and asked for feed back. By far one of the best history tours you'll ever experience. Martha, one of the two sisters who run the tour company, was our guide for a leisurely yet chock full of information Sunday morning walk. We explored the main streets, back streets and alley ways, and learned about the city from its founding in the 1600's to the present with all the wars, floods, fires and hurricanes in the middle. Martha's an archeologist by profession, shared a lot about the topography and the experiences she had while digging in the city's foundations.Martha was patient, invited all questions, and knew so much about the area likely due to her family ties to the area which go back to the first ship landing in Charleston in the 1600's. Even though we had absolutely terrible weather, our group rain-geared up and met Anne on the steps of the Customs House. Our tour took us down some hidden lanes and alleys that were enhanced by the eerie light of the wet day. We went into beautiful St Michael's Church, through Washington Square Park and past so many interesting sites. Anne's narration was great every step of the way. We loved ending the tour in the courtyard garden of Anne's parents' home and enjoyed our champagne reception in spite of the persistant mistiness. It was a wonderful introduction to Historic Charleston by a local with generations of love and pride in her unique city. read more
