I ended up parking near the basketball courts. There were many people at the park but there was still lots of available parking around. I saw people playing basketball, soccer, kites, football, etc. I was surprised they had a horse shoe court that looked like they could have a tournament as there were so many lanes. I walked through the park at first, walked to the dog park, then the pond, then circled back to the forest playground, which was huge! If my kids were little they would have loved this place! They had a stage that could have a small outdoor concert. After checking out the kids' playground, I went for a full walk around the park and realized there were 9-11 memorials, military gold star family memorials, and other patriotic displays along with huge flag in the middle of the park. There were areas to have picnics, exercise areas, and lots of open space for pets and kids and any outdoor activities. There were two bathroom areas at opposite sides of the park. One near the kids playground and the other near the skate park. I did about 1.5 loops around the park before leaving. I didn't like that there were people smoking weed in their cars and the smell was pretty strong. But overall the park is nice and perfect for family outings and a day out in the sunshine.

There is a swing set for infants and another for bigger kids. There are several climbing sets as well as a great climbing rope/tarp unit that has a rather large slide at the top. So great for the toddler/bigger kids to not get bored with. There's also a smaller playground set for little toddlers with a cool roller slide. In case that's not what you're looking for, there's a small skate area that I think would be fun for beginners. Lots of grassy area in case you bring a pup or the kids want to run around for a game of tag. Just down the path, there's a basketball court that looks almost new. This park has more than I expected and the little one loved it! Will be coming back for sure.

It was so nice to go down memory lane and bring my kids back to their first park ever, from the time they were born to when we left! They don't remember it of course, but I do! When we were stationed here the first time around, we lived in Brigadoon and this was our go-to park. I remember pushing them on the baby swings, hearing them giggle as they went down the slides and also being absolutely terrified as a first time mom that they would fall off one of the open ledges with their wobbly little legs. The park has been well maintained 6 years later and they've made an addition, a skate boarding ramp. The park also features a playground structure with ramp, baby swings, regular swings, a basketball court, a grassy field, benches facing every play area and a picnic table with a shelter equipped with a trash can. This is where our little group enjoyed our delicious lunch from Glory's. The kids had a great time playing before and after our meal. There's also ample parking. This park will always have a special place in my heart! Stay safe, Friends!

However, after going around the back when visiting the Great Neck Library I made a discovery... the front of the park. The entrance to Lynnhaven Park is off Old Donation Parkway, then a turn on Bayne Dr. It is a little tricky. The park is across the street from the fire station and library. There is parking at this location. By far the biggest reason my review jumps up to three stars is the availability of joint public/school tennis courts. Eight courts that can be lite at night, they are super nice. Nearby Lynnhaven Middle School also uses them and I imagine has priority when the need. There is league play at this location and a schedule is posted. Other than that this is open for anyone to use. Also there is a ball field that appears to be solely public and has an awesome infield. Outfield could use work as it is ridden with crab grass and patchy. It is also a lite field for night time play. Lynnhaven MS has there own ball field beside this one to utilize. A newer playground and swings sets on a bed of mulch was a welcome find too. There are four small shelters around it with a picnic table. There is no field for recreation in this area. A building behind the tennis courts houses the restrooms. However, they are out of order and locked up which I have a problem with. The water fountain is also out of order. This needs to be rectified and put back online for the park. At this point a port a pot is being used. It is located right outside the tennis court entrance. I have never seen one VB park that utilizes a port a potty as its sole means for visitors to utilize. The crowning jewel of this park are the tennis courts, they are that nice. But without restrooms and a very aging basketball court detached from the rest of the park I cannot justify moving it up further. Check this park out, it's right under your nose off of First Court.

More over if you reside in Norfolk this should be a recreation area that you frequent. The park is in one word expansive and stretches wide and long. I think you will love hearing more about this Norfolk gem. Although not a new park by any stretch, as a matter of fact it's a petty old park. Located off of Tidewater Dr. a quarter of a mile in a residential area. However, it is well maintained with newer equipment and some extras in the rear that I will elaborate on. I will work myself from front to back of property for this review. Parking is huge! I have never seen it even a quarter full even with events. It is well maintained, but usually has some amount of debris around. The park office is also located up front too. You will find older clean restrooms that are used by not only park goers, but during the week it acts like a rest stop. There are two ball fields to the right. Two all purpose fields to the left used for football and soccer. Both are used for Norfolk Recreation League. Since I am not a resident of Norfolk I am unsure how the sign up process works, however there is info at the park office. All the way to the left is a full court basketball court, however the surface is in horrid condition.. Directly to the rear is the huge tennis center with nine courts, you read correctly NINE and it's lit. There is also league play for adults. The court is kept in great condition. In the center are the playgrounds which have anything but regular equipment. Slides, swings and unique items you will NOT find in any other park. One of my daughters favorite is one that you get on and slide back and forth. Another one twirls you around, so hold on tight. There are also three nice shelters with bbq grills. All of this is in close proximity of each other. Now let's move to the rear of the property close to the water. The Lakewood Dance and Music Studio offers classes, clinics etc. through the Norfolk Parks and Recreation system. If you are not a Norfolk resident there is an up charge. My daughter who is a dancer at a VB studio attends clinics. The Tidewater Rowing Center is at the very rear of the grounds. It's main build is very large and two stories. This is also home to ODU Rowing. Two good size out buildings house rigging and row equipment for the club and ODU. Two drawbacks to this park are debris, it seems like no matter how hard the staff clean up its around. On a visit tonight someone had pushed over a can apparently on purpose. Another issue is an element of homeless/transients. They have never bothered me, but I don't like it. Lakewood has a lot to offer and is a terrific facility in the Norfolk park system. Come see for yourself.

There are 8 courts so there's plenty of room without much of a wait. On the day we arrived only half were in use. Pretty good for a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Amenities: Practice Wall: The five court area has wood wall to practice both fore and backhand drills. Restrooms: The park has a permanent restroom structure but since neither I nor my wife used them we can't comment on their cleanliness. Parking: More than Abundant parking to allow for single or doubles play at each court. Shortfalls: I didn't see any drinking fountains so be sure to bring a cooler of water and such. There also aren't any benches in the court area so if you want to rest between games then bring a folding chair...and an umbrella if you want refuge from the sun. Overall: excellent set of courts that are under used, which works great for us because there's no wait! All-in-all this is a 3.5 but I'm rounding up because of the condition of the courts and lack of wait.
