This is a small beach that many Rhode Islanders don't know about. They usually go to the most popular ones like Scarborough or Narragansett, but if you are in the Charlestown area, this is not a bad choice. The parking is expensive for a town beach and the lot is not too big, so with luck, you should be able to find a place to park. Wow this beach is stunning. But $20 for parking is ABSURD. I could've paid $10 to park at a neighboring restaurant & walked over but I wasn't too keen on lugging all my beach gear as the walk from the town parking lot is already long enough so I paid the $20 & we walked over to this small but stunning paradise. The town beach has a nice bathroom/shower area that closes at 5- but it's really nice & they offer free sunscreen (was empty)! They have Del's (thankfully) posted up on the corner which is nice & you can also order from a few nearby restaurants however we brought a cooler so I just grabbed us 3 small watermelon dels when we needed to cool down. The water was beautiful I am talking turquoise in areas & so refreshing- NO RED TIDE (which has literally been at nearly every single beach I've gone to this summer) and the rocks weren't as bad as the other beaches- so that's a plus! They're a private town beach- think very similar to Narragansett Beach- but instead of a cove you get the real deal ocean! They're a also an amazingly easy way to get to this beach- if you're from Northern RI- like I am- BACK ROADS & the ride was pretty amazing although not from my 6 year old's standpoint! The surf was a little rough- hence the red flag- but the way this beach is set up- you can easily watch your kids while they dig in the sand or play in the water! The sand was soft and perfect for kids! My son had a blast! Overall I was amazed at the cleanliness and simplicity of this small town beach & it could be my new favorite - in terms of beaches I go to. We will be back on the 25th and 26th of August as we rented a Cabin At Burlinggame camp ground- as one last hoorah for my son! Can't wait to come back! read more

I went early on in the season and this beach is truly a gem. Its not busy, has parking and bathrooms available and the beach is clean and large enough where you can spread out. It doesn't appear to bring in crowds of people as I feel it is less known than some of the other major beaches around. I am anxious to see if my next visit during more peak summer will change this experience. I was a little nervous as to where to sit, as I did see some drama in the news about home owners who live on the beach are upset when people sit on "their" property, however It wasn't very clear to me where we can and cannot sit so my anxiety had the best of me. The sandwich shop on the way there at the end of the street next to the little bakery makes AMAZING italian grinders, so I highly reccomend stopping and grabbing one for the beach. read more

Great family beach, easy parking, usually a policecar directing traffic, lifeguards on the beach. Easy to get to and hangout for the day. Tents have a special area. People are usually pretty good, no parties, no drinking & being crazy, no one fighting. There was a drink cart at the entrance in case you need a drink or quick snack. read more

Waves wind and sand Charlestown Beach is a very popular beach that extends for a long way in either direction. It gets pretty crowded in the nice weather but if you don't mind walking a bit you can always find a patch of sand for yourself. Even though you can always find a place on the beach for your body finding a place for your car might be more difficult. The lot gets full during the summer, especially on weekends, and getting here early might be the only option. Of course since they only charge for parking a car, if you happen to have a bike and know somewhere else to park you can always just take your bike and lock it at the convenient bike rack. The beach is lovely and on most days you can get a decent view of Block Island, looming about 12 miles due south. The area is usually pretty windy which means some decent waves come rolling in, but how big the waves are of course varies from day to day. The water is always a bit nippy but nothing too extreme and is very refreshing on a hot day. There is a mild drop off in places but nothing too dramatic but really small kids might be surprised when their heads sudden go under. Lots of rocks in some places but nothing but sand in others. You have to check around to find a good place. A nice beach that is certainly well used during the warm weather and is a very nice place to walk in the colder months. Lovely and scenic views are guaranteed no matter when you go. read more

We ventured out on the 4th of July to the Beach we wanted to go Blue Shutter Beach, RI. We arrived at 9:15am and it was full so asked if there was a beach close and the police officer told us Charlestown Beach abt 13 mins down the road. Thankfully it wasn't full but it was close the parking was $30 for a Holiday i guess that's to be expected. The beach was packed but was nice the waves were strong but not too bad. They have a bathroom area and outdoor door showers and some ice cream trucks. All in all not to bad. read more

This beach is tiny with 'private beach' signs framing both ends. Plus I had to pay $40 to park - it's a total ripoff. This is a nice beach for walking, but the area where you can setup to enjoy is very small. I'm sure there is a better option. read more

The phone died, so no photo. We got shut out of the shutters and other options on a beautiful Sunday after a friend's wedding and appreciated being able to sit in the sand & listen to the waves for an hour at this totally decent beach although it's still too early for swimming. I'd go back. Four stars b/c there is an offsite 10$ parking option. And now for a small personal rant about the shore access in R.I.- no offense intended,but why is it called the Ocean State fer chrissake- when you can't GET to any of the beaches??? While I appreciate that the shore is a precious resource wtf w/ all these small, 25$ a car parking lots??!?! Ok, thanks for the bathrooms and all that, but really? Is it bc Rhode Island likes to protect it's beaches for the affluent renters and owners of the abutters? If you can't afford to walk to the beach or pay this kind of dough to park your Lexis don't bother? They dont' want the scruff from the city to get out to the sand? Very nice beach with a long stretch of sand. Parking is right in front of the beach. There is an outdoor shower area and the building with the restrooms looks nice. This is the beach you will come to first before you keep going to reach the breachway read more

After being shut out of Blue Shutters (at noon - shame on me), we came here on a weekday. $15.00 to park. parking lot was behind bathhouse, so a little walk to beach not terrible. first thing I noticed was a sign that said "swift current, sudden drop off". Not what I was looking for with two 10 yr. olds. that being said, I was on "guard" the whole day. they really couldn't go more than a little way out, as they were at their chests. Too steep for a skim board,,,, Water was nice, waves kept them near the shore most of the day. Lots of fun. Rudest Locals on the planet. Will make you feel like dirt for being a renter. There economy lives on the rentals, i don't understand the animosity towards out of towners. I was ridiculed for being from connecticut. i was even forced to leave the only bar up the road for being from out of town. overall the Beach is boring with not much to do, and town itself can only be described as trashy "for the most part" there are lots of good people there. But the ones who are over tanned and then go to ocean mist to start fights are not friendly at all. Im not a fan of new jersey beaches either, but atleast you will get treated with respect there at half the price. Save yourself and book somewhere else. Also don't engage if a local gets violent. They are basically looking for a fight. read more

Did not enjoy this beach at all. Steep drop off with massive amount of rocks under water. Could not get in or out of water without risking injury from the rock bed. Was very glad when we packed it up and went a bit further down to blue shutters, which was a huge improvement. Parking was honored at blue shutters as both are Charlestown town beaches. Would never go back here again. read more

Nice place for an early season beachwalk, before the crowds hit. Lots of cool rocks that looked like moonstones. Nice newish structure with clean bathrooms up towards the parking lot. read more
