Great little state beach to have the Rhode Island experience. The ocean, the food ,the people, the boats and the views...it's all here. The biggest challenge is parking. The regulars line up here at least an hour before the gate opens around 8. There's some free, time bound parking around but the city parking folks do keep track of the time so make sure you are too so you're not coming back to a ticket if you take too long. There's also some private pay lots that typically fill up by 10 am on weekends, 11 weekdays. The water is typically always clean and the waves are mild. Sit near the rocks on the right to get the best views of the fishing boats and pleasure boaters leaving and coming into the port of Galilee. You've got George's and Champlains for snacks if you're not into the concessions on the pavilion. All around great spot but minus a star for the parking sitch. read more

Salty Brine State Beach is a tiny beach, barely 100 yards long, with gentle surf set close to the busy Galilee docks and several seafood restaurants. We go several times during the season, to check out the view and to spend time with friends that love to meet us there. Sitting inside the three-mile-long sea wall and protected from the surf, it is ideal for young children. As you sit on the beach, you can see fishing boats, pleasure boats, and ferries going by. Formerly known as Galilee State Beach, Salty Brine State beach was dedicated in 1990 to Rhode Island's most widely recognized radio personality, Salty Brine. The parking lot gets full quickly, so plan accordingly. This little beach is very popular with limited parking so you'll need to go like an hour before it opens to get a spot. The beach has nice deck areas that face the water and a variety of restaurants within walking distance. You can get there early and set up your beach gear before it opens as many people do. The beach area itself is small but the water is usually pretty calm and clean. Very little seaweed and small waves make this a child friendly beach as other beaches like Scarborough have too big of waves for them. Overall the location here is just fantastic which makes this beach well worth visiting. It's also near the block island ferry and many other venues. read more

I'm a not a huge "beach person," meaning I don't like to park myself on the beach and stay there all day, but I do enjoy visiting and hanging out for a short while, maybe taking a dip and relaxing in the sun for an hour or so and then calling it a day. This beach offers a lot - It's very clean, offers great views of the boats coming and going from the port of Galilee, and there's two restaurants nearby that offer a variety of food and ice cream. The sand is soft, mostly rock free, and there's a fishing area nearby and a jetty, which can be a challenge to walk on. The water itself is relatively calm here because the beach area is protected by the breakwater, which helps keep the channel calm for boats that are coming and going. If there's one thing that makes this beach less than ideal, it's the size. It's quite small, and it can get crowded on certain days. Overall, however, this is a great beach to visit if you're looking for something more than just a "beach" and may want to spend some time walking around and taking in the sites. read more

This is a tiny little beach in Galilee with a tiny little parking lot to match. It is our custom to arrive quite early, before the lot opens and still there are usually a solid dozen folks already on the beach. Parking is available across from the beach parking lot and on the street for a limited amount of time. This is a great spot for an early morning walk up the beach. It's cool and quiet. There is a short boardwalk along the channel (to your right as you walk toward the beach) that leads to the marina and folks will often set up chairs here to catch the early morning sun or face the opposite direction to watch the boats come and go. There are also a variety of signs here describing the types of boats that use the channel and the types of fish the commercial boats are catching. You may see a fishing boat off-loading at the seafood store at the end of the boardwalk. On our last visit, we walked waaayyy down the beach and by the time we returned the beach was busy. It was fun to watch the kids playing in the water and sand, but they seemed to be unsupervised which was disturbing as no life guard was on duty. A young man was playing his radio (? ipod, spotify ?) much louder than required for him to hear it and the choice of music was not particularly to my taste on this morning. Ear buds are inexpensive; invest in some and use them please. We know you love your music. We love music too. We just don't all want to hear it at the beach. We come to hear the waves and enjoy a quiet change from our everyday life. Please be considerate. We really do thank you. As with all state beaches, you are to remove any trash you create on the beach. I know not everyone follows this rule so if you could consider picking up the left behind can or cigarette butt, I'm sure your fellow beach goers will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Take a pic and post it on Insta. Think of all the 'likes' you'll get for being so environmentally conscious! You are a super star! Galilee is a cute little town with a number of restaurants and is the place to catch a ferry. If there are no spaces to park on the street, drive around the block, park in the large lot on your left and walk back to town. It's not that far really. Besides food available at the beach kiosk, and restaurants nearby, there is also an ice cream shop and a souvenir shops where you can pick up a beach umbrella, sand toys, a beach cover up, t-shirt or gift. I grew up coming to this beach and that makes it my favorite in the Ocean State. The water is mostly always calm and sometimes it is clear and a beautiful green color. We walk down and usually sit next to the Gailee Beach club (not in it next to it) and it's a little more calmer. In the summer this beach definitely gets jammed packed especially on the weekends. We have never been able to park in the main lot because people line up with their cars at literally 6 am during the summer. We usually find a spot in the 4 hour street lot or sometimes we will pay and park in one of the nearby homes. Salty Brine also has a beautiful boardwalk and I love watching the boats and ferries go by. Also love grabbing clam cakes and "chowda" at either George's or Champlins. Super family friendly beach just be prepared for large crowds on the weekends! read more

We are the Ocean State, so we are blessed with many miles of public beach access. Salty's is a favorite. Since I usually have a kid with me, I have always liked the fact that the waves are small and there is seldom any undertow. It was great when my grandson was a toddler and not a strong swimmer. Now, it has become a tradition and remains our favorite spot. We like to walk on the beach and can do so all the way to Roger Wheeler State Beach /Sand Hill Cove. There is a nice jetty to climb on and fishermen to chat up. At low tide, there are treasures to be found along the rocks. You can see both Point Judith Light and Block Island in the distance. Restaurants galore are within walking distance, including a take out options if you want to eat your clam cakes and chowder right on the beach! There are a couple of gift shops and ice cream, as well as Del's Lemonade. We like to watch the fishing boats come and go, as well as the Block Island ferries. The only drawback is the limited parking, so get there early!! And I must add my undying affection for the man whose name adorns this magical place. Salty Brine was one of the best. XO read more

The beach is on the small side but it's in kind of a cool location near the boat ports. There is also a small restaurant at the entrance. The only part that is kind of annoying is the parking lot it is really small and annoying to get out of. If parking runs out you have to park down the street. read more

So as I've been telling people I went to the beach yesterday they ask where, and I say Salty Brine, and their response is "where?" Their response is justified because this is the smallest beach I've ever been to. Still, I'm going to give it a good review because even though it is small, it still has everything you need in a beach. Of course I mean sand and water..... No, really, I like this beach a lot... for a weekday. Everything is clean (beach, water, bathrooms, and shower). Also, the water is warmer than the water at the Westerly beaches. Salty Brine is one bookend to a span of beaches, the other end being Roger Wheeler State beach with a bunch of private beaches in between. This composition actually makes for a great running beach. I would say the distance between the 2 state beaches is about 1/2 mile; I ran it back and forth twice and it felt like a nice short run. What makes this a great running beach is that the private beaches take away from the crowds so it is easy to run unobstructed. At low tide the sand is firm and there were few to no shells, rocks, or seaweed. On top of it being a good running beach, there are actually a fair amount of food options. On the beach itself is Salty's Landing - a basic food stand with picnic tables on a deck. Next to the beach are George's and Champlin's seafood restaurants. Both have outdoor deck seating. I can't tell you the quality of the food at any of the places because I brought my own food, but it's definitely nice to have options. In addition to looking out on the beautiful water, Salty Brine also has the Block Island ferry and other boats coming in and out of the channel for your viewing pleasure. You can climb upon the large rock wall and take in the boating sites. The one draw back to this place is the noise of the turbine. While it's a pretty cool site, it also is a little noisy - though I feel like in the end it's easy to tune out. In conclusion, a great weekday beach. Check it out. read more

I found this beach a few weeks ago and am a serious convert. Nice, real people. Mutual respect with regard to noisiness and personal space. And best of all, you can walk away from your stuff without worry that someone is going to go through your bag when you are gone. The bathroom facilities are new and a clean no-touch system. They even provide a HOT shower for a few quarters...I think it's a dollar. It's a carry-in carry-out beach, so you don't have any garbage cans on the premises and nobody litters. It's unbelievable. And finally the water is swimmable!!! You can see your feet if the waves dont kick up too much sand, and sometimes there are little guppies here and there. No real seaweed issues either. It's amazing to think it's right near the the point Judith ferries. There are several jetties protecting the shore as well, which might keep the undesirable things away. NEXT.... FOOD: I love Salty's Landing. I had gone to George's and Champlin's, and they were ok (not a fan of the chowder or the service), but one day I decided to visit the little concession stand to see if perhaps they had something that wasn't fried beyond recognition. Their fish sandwich came fried but they grilled it for me and it was incredibly good. Fresh fish, veggies, etc. They also serve Baby Elliot's Lemonade, which rivals Dell's and is so much tastier. And FRESH BREWED REAL Iced Tea. And sweet potato fries!!! All this was under 10 bucks. The sandwich was about 5 and the fries about 3 and the drink was about 2 as well. I am a convert! If you are feeling ready for classic beach food, try the chowder and clam cakes. Neither will make you feel weighed down. I think Salty's Landing makes everything fresh and it keeps our bellies happy. The tastiest, fluffiest, crunchiest clamcakes I have ever had. And i have had my share. And when you are ready for some ice cream, i recommend the one right under Champlins...get the Mud Pie: Espresso Coffee ice cream with OREOS. Frankly, UNBELIEVABLE and totally homemade!!! So there you have it people, fresh, tasty (and dare I say, healthy?) beach food awaits you at an adorable and relaxing beach in RI. So how to get there? Not sure I should tell you. It might stop being a well known secret ;) Just kidding. Just take 95 to route 4 - 1 and follow signs for Galilee and the Point Judith Ferry. Enjoy! read more

My utmost favorite beach in Rhode Island. Quiet, entertaining with the ferries and boats coming in and out of the inlet. Clean Clean bathrooms. Some days there are waves, and other days there are no waves, but this is ok! Most of all, it's family oriented and respectable people visit this beach. read more

I have lived in Rhode Island for about 2 years now and had no idea about this place. It is one of the smallest beaches in this state right by Gailee. Since the beach is small, parking can be a little rough in the state lots, however, there is a ton of FREE, yes FREE, four hour parking around. If you feel like you are going to be later, I saw signs for parking between $7 and $15. Which is not bad if you are comparing it to other beaches. One of the best parts of this beach is the lack of rocks and the proximity to the water. I love Horseneck in Mass, but sometimes I feel like I need river shoes to walk on the beach. You are really close to the water too, which is nice for quick dips. The other added bonus is the eateries in the area. Most restaurants have walk up windows so if you forgot beach snacks, never fear, they have you covered. Georges is right beside this beach and Buster Krabs is right across the street. Not bad I must say. Two ice cream shops are close by too. The bathroom and showers are also well maintained. It smells very clean too, which is a plus and a half in my book. The beach is maintained well and there is hardly any trash tumbleweeds floating around. read more

I love this beach. Small calm waves and tons of boats going in and out. The parking is limited. This year the parking crew is a little bit out of their minds. They are refusing to allow drop offs. One of my favorite beaches a Rhode Island. This is the quintessential New England beach in the quintessential New England Beachtown. Definitely a place to come lay out listen to music drink a beer and eat some delicious seafood. The town of Galilee is beautiful and quaint and you will not stop taking pictures. From the beach you will be able to see passing boots being chased by hordes of birds, a beautiful sunset and free street parking for four hours! How can you beat that! Also the local is a very friendly and nice andmake everyone feel welcome. Definitely one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to a New England. read more

I'm a total beach bum and admittedly, I unfortunately have not been to all of the beaches in RI, however; I have been to a fair share. Salty Brine State Beach is definitely not one of my favorites. I remember coming here as a child when my family from CT would rent a cottage for the week in Point Judith and we'd visit the area beaches, Salty Brine was one of them. Of course, as a child, I was thrilled with any beach. As an adult, this place leaves a lot to be desired. Let's start with first things first, this place is a pain in the bum to get to. I personally HATE traffic and I hate tourists; both of which there are plenty of around this area. It's never an easy feat trying to get here because there are tons of people walking the streets to hop on the Block Island Ferry and are idiots through the entire process. Also, there are way too many children at Salty Brine. That having been said, it's a great family beach! If you have young ones, I'd highly recommend going here. The beach is clean, there aren't a ton of rocks and shells, the waves are minimal and there is a nice pavilion with showers, restrooms and usually a Del's and/or ice cream stand. Until I have children, you won't catch me here alone or with my other childless friends. read more

Visited Salty Brine beach for the first time in 15 years today. The water was beautiful but the people on the beach were nasty. Despite the fact that there were lots of children running around, the raunchy adults on the beach were dropping F bombs left and right. Many people were smoking on this "smoke free" beach and drinking their booze. With little to no breeze, the smoke just enveloped you. I looked to my right only to see a woman, who looked like an aged Foxy Brown (90s rapper), stick her bikini bottoms into her butt crack, get on her knees, straddle, then proceed to twerk to music and video herself while her 11 year old son looked on! Seriously people, get some class! We later visited at dusk only to find the beach filthy. Cig butts, bottles, napkins, forks etc. Some people are lazy and disgusting pigs. They have to ruin everything. Salty must be rolling in his grave. read more

I love this beach , but parking and inconvenience just knocked off a star for me. The beach itself has little to no seaweed or rocks which is amazing since I despise both at the beach. The water is very clear, with moderate/small waves. While the beach is small , it can get super crowded. The people I see here is usually just families with their kids. Last time I came was a Sunday and wow...it was unbelievable. Every single parking lot was full including the backyards that people rent out for parking. It was crazy. We literally waited to see it if anyone would leave and luckily someone did. The beach was the most full I had ever seen it. I definitely recommend coming during the week where there is less people. The facilities & bathrooms were really nice with separate showers to get all the sand and stickiness off of you. The food stand they have -salty's landing - was so good. The clam strip roll, fries and fish sandwich were so good. Definitely a must have . The chowder and clam cakes were decent but not worth it. The clam cakes especially were fried balls of dough with hardly any clam , not appetizing. All in all this beach is one of my favorites because of the facilities/ food options and cleanliness of the water , but I won't make the mistake of coming on a weekend again. I've been coming to Salty Brine/Galilee Beach for four years. This past weekend (7/17/16) I witnessed two individuals smoking from a metal pipe. Now I did not smelled marijuana the entire three hours I was there so I think they were smoking some other illegal substance. The woman smoking the pipe was out of it and could barely walk. I reported this to a waitress at George's and she got her manager. There isn't police or security on this beach. There's also no smoking allowed although no one seems to follow that rule either. Also we frequent Champlain's seafood. I usually enjoy fried scallops & Shrimp but the seafood had no flavor. Desperately needed salt & pepper. No flavor at all. I'll be looking for a new beach. read more

I haven't been to too many RI beaches, but I think this one was easy to get to and not too crowded. There is a cool view of the boats coming in and out of the port. This location is right by the Block Island ferry stop. Nearby you can eat at a few restaurants or buy some fresh seafood and make it yourself! Parking was easy and cheaper if you are an RI resident, with a few, cheaper private parking locations down the street as well. Water was warm (end of august), but not sure how clean it is due to its proximity to the port. I've heard you can run down to the next beach easily (which you can see from Salty Brine). The bathrooms are apparently new, but I didn't find them to be too clean (again, I don't have to many other RI beaches to compare to). There are no trashcans so you have to take your own litter. Overall easy to access, park, and find a nice spot to lay out. Glad there was food nearby, esp Buster Crab's! read more

went on a sunny wednesday in the summer. east beach and blue shutters was full/closed so we came here. parked 2 minutes away in someones yard for $10. this beach was ok. super small, which means it is uncomfortably crowded - like "you will clearly hear 4 different conversations going on" crowded... if you like personal space, or privacy, you might hate this beach, which was how i felt. but the experience wasnt entirely miserable. the water here is really clean. when its calm you can see clams and crabs in the water. you can actually have some fun without being wrapped in seaweed. another positive is being able to walk on the rocks bordering the beach on the right. this allowed us a much desired getaway from the crowded beach, and some peace and quiet. you do need to be careful, but even little kids were walking out there. if you brought alcohol in a cooler, this would probably be a good spot to suck back on a few cold ones, since alcohol's not allowed on the beach. the shack food on the beach was ok. fried stuff, even a veggie burger option, but i went with the grilled cheese. and if you forget sunscreen like i did, you can get some at the giftshop closest to the beach. read more
