We use our wood stove as a main source of heat and when our 3-year old LOPI wasn't burning as clean as it usually does, and the fact that two different service techs were out a few months ago for a chimney sweep and cap installation, we were surprised that it still wasn't burning cleanly. Better to be safe, we decided to have a local certified fire technician (Charlie Dunn & Sons) inspect it. Turns out that one of the "fly by night" chimney sweep guys reinstalled the deflector incorrectly! I reached out to Charles as we were in the middle of a whole home renovation on our home that was built in '84 and came with 3 gas-log fireplaces. With several of the walls opened up and the previous fireplace inserts and exhaust tubing exposed, I felt it was a good time to have the fireplaces and chimney exteriors inspected and deep cleaned. Charles was timely, pricing felt reasonable for the work performed, and he provided quite a bit of educational feedback on fireplaces and fire safety, including some feedback for our GC on proper configurations for the fireplace hearth and framework. Two of our 3 fireplaces were very heavily used by the previous owner and per Charles' feedback, a couple decades overdue for cleaning. His dad (now retired) cleaned it for us for the first time over 30 years ago! They have been a family owned business since 1983. I called Charles to do a chimney sweep and inspection at our rental. He was very professional on the phone and explained his process. He also explained that he prefers to contact the tenant to schedule the appt and that he does not disclose his findings to the tenant and would speak to me directly. He did just that. He called me after the inspection and told me I had a crack in the rear firebox wall and I also needed a new grate. I called up Charlie for an fireplace and chimney inspection back in 2017; he did a great job giving me a heads up on some minor cracks on the fire bricks. I got those sealed up and I was ready to roll through winter... I got into escrow in mid September of 2018 on another property so I hit him up for an inspection.
