Update: I replayed Charlie Yates Golf Course yesterday, Saturday, April 4, 2026, for the first time since October 2022. It was my first time seeing the inside of the clubhouse since it was renovated and reopened in March 2023. It's nice. I called at 9:25 AM for a same-day tee time. I booked 3:10 PM, which is the earliest time they had for our threesome. We finished at 5:34 PM, so 9 holes took us 2 hours 24 minutes. We had to wait at every tee and it got worse, especially on the last 3 holes. This wasn't surprising for a Saturday afternoon, but still, too slow. In the last 10 years, this was by far my longest round at Charlie Yates. There was a starter, but no marshal on the course to help with pace of play. There appeared to be enough staff on hand for someone to do a loop to speed things up. We each paid $43.56 after tax to play 9 holes with carts. I paid $37.98 in October 2022, so the price hasn't gone up much in 3.5 years. For the money, I still think this is a good-value and convenient public course with a fun layout and some scenic holes. This is why I'm maintaining my rating at four stars. The azaleas around the 8th green were in bloom. The greens were in good shape. I think some or all of the tee boxes have been redone since the last time I was here. Some looked relatively great; for example, Nos. 1, 2, and 4. However, some of the tee boxes were in bad shape; for example, No. 3 had a bunch of weeds and No. 5 (white tees) was mostly dirt. I know that box doesn't get much sunlight, but dang (check out my pic). Both the course and driving range were packed. Good business. Shout-out to Sabriya, who both booked my tee time over the phone and checked me in at the clubhouse. She was polite and efficient. If you call to book your tee time, you can avoid the online fee. read more

I had heard about Charlie Yates Golf Course so I had to give it a try while in the area. It is a pretty nice course with par 3's mostly. The price is reasonable and there are some fun holes. The course was pretty backed up when I played it on the water holes but overall it was a good morning of golf! read more

After an initial snafu with my tee-time reservation, Michael in the pro shop made it right and his courtesy and professionalism made it an enjoyable round. I used to have a lot of fun playing this course, it used to be in good shape. I've never seen a course getting injection of money the way that Charlie Yates did from Bobby Jones, and get exponentially worse. Whoever is responsible for the agronomy at this course deserves to lose their job. I really hate to say that, but it's shameful. The conditions that they've let the course come to do not warrant a $12 fee yet on the weekends they charge as much as $40 to play this 9 hole track. I really wish they could figure something out here, especially when they consider themselves a sister course to East Lake, which is a hilarious comparison. read more

Update after playing nine holes. Charlie Yates is a pretty solid (great) public 9-hole course. The cost is reasonable ($20 wo cart, $25 with), The layout is fairly challenging with elevation, some over-the-water shots, long par 3's and three par 4's that benefit from a good driver. The course is well kept, as you'd expect being associated with that awesome course next to it (East Lake). No issues with the greens at all. I will say that the first cut of rough can be punitive. I had to look hard for my ball just off the fairway on several occasions even though I knew where I hit it. The grass just swallowed it up. Recommended. read more

4 stars for a solid 9 hole course. When it comes to playing rounds of golf, I find that you often get what you pay for. Whether it is just a few bucks for a subpar course or a great course that cost a ton, that's just how it often goes. Fortunately, you sometimes find 9 holes courses that offer fair prices and a really pleasant golfing experience. Charlie Yate is one of those courses. My wife and I went over to Charlie Yates, located in the East Lake area (note: as you can see from other reviews, this is a sister course for the famous East Lake course), to play a round. We arrived at the venue and went inside to check on a brisk Saturday afternoon. I paid the desk attendant for my round (only $20 a person!) and helped me order a large bucket of balls to warm up at the driving range. Said driving range is right next to the clubhouse and is on grass, which is something I love love love compared to other courses with mats. The range was pretty packed with people (something I remember often being the case from college), but we were able to fit in and hit some balls out into a big open area with about 4 or 5 yardage markers. After warming up, we grabbed a scorecard (note the card did not include handicaps for the holes) and headed over to the first hole. We decided to walk the course (it offers rolling carts for us players with larger bags). This golf course has some beautiful and interesting holes (including several par 4s, which makes for a nice twist for a 9 hole course), but there are two big drawbacks. The first one is that this course is quite popular (as are many public courses nowadays during the pandemic) and we did have to wait for a foursome 2 groups in front of us who were rather slow. Fortunately, we weren't in a rush and we didn't have to feel as stressed about subpar shots we hit with a foursome also behind us. The second drawback is that, while the fairways are in great condition, the greens could use some work. The course management is working on fixing the green for the 9th hole as of the time of this review, so I'm hopeful that maybe the greens will get better as we get back into nicer weather this summer. Overall, Charlie Yates provides golfers with a nice course for a really fair price. As long as you don't mind some crowds and rough greens, you will find a solid place to scratch that golf itch. read more

On the rare occasion where I try to convince myself to try golf again, I use the driving range here to reacquaint myself with just how horrible a golfer I am. The first time I tried golf was with a friend who was sure that the fact that I had a hard shot playing hockey would make me a natural at driving the ball. It's funny how wrong he was. Skill with a hockey stick doesn't automatically translate into skill with a golf club. My golf swing makes my slapshot look like poetry in motion by comparison. Range costs are $7 for a medium bucket and $10 for a large. It's located right next to East Lake. The full course is a par 58, and weekends and holidays cost $38 for a round with cart. Charlie Yates is THE training course for those of us who aren't scratch golfers. It's an executive course, which to me means a few defaults: -Lots of par 3s -Walkable -Can be finished quickly (compared to a full par/length course) Some things that aren't as obvious: Yates is managed by East Lake. Yes, that prestigious top-100 courses in the world course. The one that hosts the FedEx cup every year. Yates is a GREAT track because of it, and while it's not quite the course that East Lake is, it's still beautiful and well maintained. It should be, because it used to be a part of East Lake GC in it's heyday. Personally, i love Yates because it forces you to use your entire bag. You'll tee off with irons you've never teed. You'll only pull your driver 4 times (or less). You'll chip uphill on a par 3 to a tri-tiered green. You'll scratch your head on some holes and say "why!?" And you'll leave a better, more disciplined golfer because of it. Some things to look out for (and honestly, personal requests in some cases): The greens are pretty nice, but well traveled (this is a muni course after all). Divots can be an issue. Every time i play, i try to repair at least 3 divots per green. It takes a village, I suppose. Lend a hand. Another thing of note - the back 9 is a little repetitive, but in incredible shape. I strongly prefer the front 9 for it's variation if you're looking to put in a quick twilight round. The back nine is lot's of low irons and only one par 4. Prices are great, and the rewards program equally great. And if you live in 30317 or 30316 you get the neighbor discount, which is only $35 to play 18 with a cart. Military and seniors (55+) get the same deal. I think you'll agree that's pretty outrageous. Anyway, i love this course because it has a range, is close to my house, and is not super crowded. I also like that i can play it quickly (but without rushing my game). The First Tee program is based here, and as such has sole access to the putting green and chipping area. Otherwise, this course has few shortcomings, in my opinion. In fact, my family and friends played here on my wedding day and they took great care of all 22 of us. I'd recommend the same to you, if you're a party of 1, 2, 4 or 40. One more note - Charlie Yates is currently offering a discount on Scoutmob. Check it out. Keep it in the fairway! read more

I'm not a huge fan of golf but my hubby is. I came here with a group of friends for a 9 and dine. We played 9 holes and really had a great time. According to my hubby, if you're now learning the game this is the golf course for you. I did notice a few young cats wearing tims and throwing a few back. Wished we had thought of bringing a few libations, that would've made for a more interesting game. read more

This is probably the most popular course on my list in Atlanta. The location is great (intown, next door to the East Lake course), the prices are reasonable, and the upkeep is generally above average. Great place to work on your iron play and enjoy a quicker than normal round. My only gripe is not having too many chances to take out the driver and really drill the ball, but again this course isn't designed for that. They have a frequent player points program that's helpful too. You can earn free rounds and other benefits, they keep up with everything. read more

Oohhhh Charlie Yates, why do you support my love/hate relationship with golf. Every time I say "I've had enough - my golfing days are over," you lure me in with your well-manicured fairways and the absurd amount of hole-in-one possibilities. Have I ever hit a hole-in-one. No. Will I ever? Probably not... but that won't stop me from trying and there's no better course to keeping plugging away that Charlie Yates. The previous review from Adam M., who by the way is the Duke of the course, pretty much says it all. East Lake does a phenomenal job of managing the turf. The design is challenging but not overly demanding. The par 58 course tends to "level the playing field" for male and female players regardless of skill level or age. And most importantly, it's minutes from downtown Atlanta! If you love golf and always find yourself driving out to the 'burbs on the weekends just to squeeze some playing time in, give Charlie Yates a try. You aren't going to improve your driving game, unless you hit a few buckets on the range, but your short game (specifically 7-gap) will be much better in short amount of time. There are 2 things worth mentioning before I close this out: 1) As Adam said the back 9 can be repetitive. I think 8 out of the 9 holes are short par 3's that aren't exactly challenging. They are fun to play but no where near the degree of difficulty that you will experience on the front 9 (mostly due to water hazards and extreme elevation changes). And 2) Watch out for random people strolling across the course. It is downtown Atlanta after all, and no matter where you go in the city there are always weird people walking around with neither care nor purpose in this world. Enjoy your round and ask about a free membership at the front desk - it's worth the extra 60 seconds of waiting if you plan on visiting the course again. read more

This is a great quality course for the money. Yeah it's just 9 holes but the greens are in great shape (in decent shape in between seasons), and fairways are well maintained. ELGC partners with them and helps oversee the agronomy budget and helps train their grounds crew. It's a great place to go out and practice your game. It's a million times nicer than Candler. This is one of my favorite golf courses in Atlanta. Easily the best bank for your buck as far as ITP courses go. It is pretty short with only a couple par 4's, so it is probably considered an executive course. But in terms of grounds keeping and availability, it is very high in my book. This course and the famous East Lake Country Club next door, share greens keepers, so the course is usually in great condition. I live in the V. Highlands, so this course is really convenient to get to. For all you professionals working 9-5, this is the perfect in town course to squeeze a quick 18 in before sundown. read more

I made a visit to the Charlie Yates course the day it was dedicated, and the affable Charlie welcomed everyone, and then introduced Tiger Woods and his father, Earl Woods,because Tiger was the featured speaker. In his remarks Tiger said this course was a dream come true because when he was growing up there were few places where young people like him could play golf. He always wished that students could play golf and there were few who would ever have the opportunity. Charlie Yates directed that the children who went to school in East Lake could play golf there as long as they retained a "B" average so he linked academics with the joy of golf. How wise! Thanks to Charlie,one of Atlanta's first citizens who won the British Amateur in 1938, and Tommy Cousins, the contractor who brought the course back, Atlanta youth had to study to play the game they loved so well. read more

I've been twice this past summer and won't go back. The first time I had a great experience with friendly pro shop staff and maintenance crew. My friend and I had such a hard time finding the entrance and figuring out where to park. The second time, we ran into some lady running the pro shop who took her job way too seriously and tried to tell me which of their "lost and found" free clubs I could borrow when I would reach for the one that fit me. Excuse me? No, I will not choose to take a left handed club when I'm right handed. Anyone can figure that out, even if they aren't a golfer. I've been golfing since I was a little one, so I automatically know what bare essentials I need. All I knew is that her domineering power trip was showing how much of a golfer she wasn't, but wished to be. Since then, I've spent my time at other courses that welcome me as a young female golfer and are much closer and affordable to where I live. read more

My fiance and I had an AWFUL experience at the Charlie Yates golf course this morning. The greens are in average condition for a public course (though my fiance would probably not be as generous in his review) but the staff was not very helpful and a golf game that should have taken 2 - 3 hours tops (this is an executive course) took 2.5 hours for nine holes (half the course) because of the course marshals were MIA when it came to making a group of clueless players speed their game along or allow singles to pass them. There was literally a line of players at each hole held up by a threesome that spent about 15 minutes at each hole searching for balls they hit into the woods. For a 12:20pm tee time on a weekday, this was a joke. read more

This is a pretty darn good course. Its always pretty well kept and has a lot of very different holes. Its an executive course so the longest hole might be around 350 or so. There is a lake in the middle of 4 holes, so if you are a bum you might want to come with a bunch of balls. I have only played 9 holes here a few times, so i cant comment on the back 9 but im sure they are decent holes too. read more

Only had a couple hours to kill so reluctantly signed up for this cheap executive 9 hole course on GolfNow. Can't remember having more fun playing 9 holes. Playing on this fun well-maintained and beautiful historic East Lake property was such a treat. God how I wish this course was in Indiana. I went here last weekend with a few of my friends and was all around disappointed. I am a new golfer and have not seen a ton of courses but this place had no highlights. It was expensive at $25 riding for 9 holes. The course was under construction with all sand traps being empty concrete holes, yet no discount was given. It was extremely crowded and we were always waiting and being waited on by someone. As a beginner, the course is very unforgiving. The dense trees and fences allow for no slicing at all or plan on losing quite a few balls. We weren't allowed to warm up on the putting green as kids classes were being taught on both of them. The biggest issue with this place is they mislead you into thinking there is 18 holes, when in fact they only have 9. We booked 18 holes and upon arrival for our reservation, were only charged for 9 holes, unbeknownst to us. So around the 4th hole on our second time around (since they don't actually have 18 holes) the marshall came by and kicked us off. She wouldn't let us finish up and pay, nor could she tell us what the cost was to add on the remaining holes. It was a very frustrating experience all in all. With so many good options in the metro Atlanta area, there is no way me and my friends will be back to Charlie Yates. read more
