I heard about this place being a good place to go, and it's been there forever. I started off slow, (pictures would be good on the menu), so I got the crispy tacos with beans and rice, very good. BUT there are so many other things to try, I have been in Laredo for 4.5 years, and it's been hard to find a Mexican restaurant that reminds me of home (Arizona, California), this might just be the place!! Looking for a place to eat dinner on our first night in Laredo, on Black Friday no less, I came across Charlie's. Driving up to it is a little intimidating. There are bars on every window and a bit rundown down but the parking lot had a ton of cars. That speaks volumes! We were greeted and told we could sit anywhere, other than reserved spots since there was a band starting at 8pm. The band was a huge plus. They brought chips and salsa and we ordered some margaritas. Just a note, they don't do Cadillac. The were good, not great. Same with the Pina Colada. My husband ordered the crispy tacos and I the tres enchiladas with a salad. The salad was all iceberg lettuce with an interesting dressing with a tangy flair. The enchiladas were good but the beans dried out. My husband wasn't crazy about the tacos. We stayed for the band which consisted of one guy. Regardless, he was fun and did all genres of music. Two reasons, the taste brought me to my childhood memories dining with my parents in the 1970s when there were once actual steak houses and $14.99. Where else are you going to get a Ribeye, shrimp , baked potato , and a side salad for $14.99. I'll tell you, in Laredo Texas. If your visiting Laredo this is a must stop to eat, the food is how food looks and should taste. Also on weekends there's always a live band playing to work off the steak and beer . AWFUL SERVICE!!!! I placed an order and after 45 mins of waiting we decided to leave. The staff is slow and the "manager" claimed it was the kitchen's fault. It is a great establishment that provides the perfect steak and potato dish. I can't think of another steak house that would provide the ultimate last meal like steak and shrimp. The salad with house dressing was really good and the shrimp was battered perfectly. We had rib eye and sirloin and both were cooked to medium rare with perfect grill marks. I had tried many steaks in different renowned establishments and this steak outdid them. This local place has also a night scene for the party goer but the restaurant side for the family. Okay, the place does look like an abandoned building/dirty ol' cantina BUT it's NOT!! Surprise, surprise! Yes, the place is a little worn out but it seems like that's not what matters here. I almost didn't go in, but there were a lot of cars out in the parking lot , always a good sign. I did smell something good cooking while I was still in the parking lot, so that's what really convinced me. The food aroma lingering outside smelled sooooo gooooooood. I looked over at my hubby and the look he gave me said it all "oh yeah we are going in". The food is very TEX/MEX/AMERICAN and homey. I had the dos amigos which consists of a chicken enchilada in a white sour cream sauce topped with munster cheese, and 2 cheese enchiladas topped with cheddar cheese and chile con carne sauce, a side of rice and refried beans. I really liked the rice it wasn't soggy or saucy. I also had a carne asada fajita taco on flour tortilla. The meat was soft, juicy and very flavorful. There salsa lacks something it's just meh. The chips were warm. My husband had a T bone steak which i also had a taste of. The steak was delicious it came with a side salad and loaded baked potato. My son had a cheese burger and the meat was flavorful. My daughter had the fried shrimp and were also crispy and very good. The bar area was full of tables already reserved, and we sat on the restaurant side. Service was very good as well. This seems like a place where locals come and unwind " que Chilli's ni que 8 cuartos". The patrons were an older crowd, but It seemed like a lot of people knew each other. They've been open for 27 yrs so that must speak louder than any posted review. The test of time is undeniable. I can't imagine what would happen if they fixed up the place to make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye; maybe they would have waiting lines. read more
