On July 17, 2026, I visited the Huntersville location for my eye care needs and saw Dr. Sumit Gupta. Dr. Gupta was fantastic; he was kind, gentle, and extremely professional during my visit. His staff provided me with a truly memorable experience. Katrina, the first staff member to assist me, was outstanding. She ensured that I was comfortable and explained each step of the process clearly, making sure I understood everything along the way. Her bright spirit, along with her calming voice, helped me relax and even laugh a bit from start to finish. Michelle, the second staff member I encountered, took care of organizing my chart and preparing it for Dr. Gupta. She was kind, friendly, and a true gem. Dr. Brandon Whiteside saved my wife's vision. My wife contracted Ocular Shingles several years ago. My father had lost his vision to ocular shingles; so, I knew we had to act quickly. My primary doctor recommended Dr. B. Whiteside. He was great! He explained the entire multi-year process, risks, opportunities, etc. ahead of time. It's hard to imagine, or explain to anyone what was involved. The intense concentration and constant medicine adjustments etc. that he made were all effective. It worked, my wife maintained near perfect vision in the affected eye. He is now my Ophthalmologist as well. Best, most thorough, Medical Doctor I've ever dealt with. read more

I was really looking forward to this visit. I had been seeing an optometrist for my past eye exams and felt I needed more specialized care. I was so disappointed with this visit. It must have been an off day because I felt Dr Whiteside and his staff were incredibly rude. Immediately upon arrival, the young lady at the front desk scoffed at me for arriving too early. Dr Whiteside's assistant acted as if she couldn't be bothered with my questions and Dr Whiteside was incredibly arrogant. Dr Whiteside kept his back to me for most of the appointment and when I asked questions about the exam, Dr Whiteside fussed indicating I wasn't at an optometrist's office and my questions went unanswered. I was told to collect sample contacts when I checked out, however the front desk explained they were out and I could return later in the week to pick them up. I asked to speak to Dr Whiteside's assistant because I had questions that were still not answered and I was happy to wait if she was busy. When the assistant returned, I was looking at glasses. She got impatient with me while I put the glasses away, acting as if I had really put her out of her way. After I returned home that afternoon, I received a text message my sample contacts had arrived. I was already frustrated with my visit and now even more frustrated that I had driven home to Gastonia and would need to return to Huntersville to collect contacts I was told they didn't have in stock. I called to ask why the contacts weren't given to me while I was in the office, and the young lady actually fussed at me asking me why I didn't take time to ask form them while I was in the office. When I explained I did ask for them and was told they weren't in stock, she got irritated and continued to explain her credentials to me, stating she manages the contacts and had a set for me with my name on them. I felt as if I was being treated as if I was lying about my experience. When I tried to explain I had literally just left the office and made it home and wasn't planning on driving back to Huntersville that afternoon she smarted off she could mail them. Problem solved. The contacts were great, I called and asked to the RX to be emailed to me. When I tried to purchase contacts from another vendor, I was told my RX was missing the diameter of the contact. When I emailed Dr Whiteside's office asking for an updated RX, the same young lady fussed at me again stating their patients don't have issues with their prescriptions. The arrogance of the entire office was so off putting that I would prefer paying for another exam elsewhere. LensCrafters provides kinder service. read more

Have been going here for years, but after today will never go back and recommend others not go here. Had an appointment today to have the second half of a laser procedure done. My appointment was at 3:45 and i arrived right on time. I checked in and was almost immediately taken to the back. I had my eyes checked, pressure checked, and dilated for the procedure. All this was completed by 3:55 PM. I then sat there in the room for over 40 minutes with no updates from staff. I have to preface, this is when dealing with MRS. Whiteside, not Mr., and it seems like when you deal with her you will always be kept waiting for a minimum of 30 minutes. Anyway approximately 50 minutes after arriving I was asked to move to another room where Mrs. Whiteside checked my eyes. When I questioned why every time I have an appointment I am kept waiting more than 30 minutes, I was told that they experienced problems that morning with their laser equipment and my appointment would have to be rescheduled. So they knew THAT MORNING there was a problem with the equipment, still let me drive to the appointment, still dilated my eye AND kept me waiting for 40 minutes? How unprofessional is that? Did she think that a malfunctioning laser was going to fix itself and was she willing to trust it? I am DONE with this place. Mrs. Whiteside seems to think her time is more valuable than anyone else's and wasted my time and money today for no reason other than total incompetence. I've been seeing Dr. Brandon Whiteside for more than five years for my annual eye exams. I had LASIK surgery over 20 years ago from another doctor in VA, and prefer seeing an ophthalmologist for my annual visits. My insurance doesn't cover eye exams, but Dr. Whiteside's fee is comparable to what my husband pays at his optometrist. I do need to schedule in advance for annual visits. However, I recently had an issue with light flashes in one eye, and was able to get a same-day appointment. I like both Dr. Whiteside and his staff very much. He has an excellent bedside manner, and his staff have always been friendly, helpful, and efficient. I keep trying to convince my husband to switch, because he's so good. I'm glad to have found this practice! read more

I had cataract surgery on my right eye in February. Dr. Brandon Whiteside replaced my bad lens with an incorrect lens. I brought this to his attention, explaining to him my vision was still bad in that eye. He told me to "go to the dollar store and buy reading glasses and pop out the left lens on the glasses and that way I would be able to read a book or look at my phone with one lens in the reading glasses". Of course, I told him that was ridiculous. The whole idea was to be able to read WITHOUT glasses. He eventually agreed to replace the incorrect lens with the correct lens, without ever acknowledging he screwed up or even apologizing to me. So, I had the surgery on June 13. Would you believe I had to pay $250 for the use of the surgery center, when this was his error!! He should have covered the cost if everything! So, I get wheeled into the operating room. When you have this surgery, you really feel nothing, and when they're done, you don't remember anything. Well, I was wide awake the entire surgery. I felt a lot of pain!!! I expressed to them during the surgery that I was in pain. I had tears streaming from my eyes the entire time, because of the pain and burning. At one point, I must have moved my eye slightly as a reaction to that pain. Well, Dr. Whiteside screamed at me!! He yelled, "Hey, hey, hey! What are you doing! Linda, you can't move your eye! You're going to mess everything up! You can't do that!". The room got immediately quiet. I told him I'm sorry, but it really hurts and I didn't mean to do that. Still, nobody gave me anymore medication in my IV to relax me. I started hyperventilating. I was trying so hard not to move my eye, but it was burning so bad! One of the nurses asked if I was still feeling any pain. I yes, but it comes and goes. Once everything was finished, the nurses say me up, still in the operating room. I started sobbing uncontrollably, almost like a release of the pain and fear I had just experienced. Three nurses stood around me patting my leg and my back. The nurse anesthetist asked me if I wanted some medicine in my IV to help me relax. I said yes. Dr. Whiteside was standing near the foot of my bed, still in the operating room. He never once turned to me to ask if I was alright... NOTHING!! Once he left the room, I told the nurses that I was so upset by his screaming at me and that I didn't do it in purpose. So, the next day I go to my post-op appointment with Dr. Whiteside. The first thing he says to me as he comes in the exam room is, "I heard you threw a fit yesterday.". I couldn't believe what this poor excuse of a doctor had just said to me! There's a lot more that was said in this appointment and I made sure I had a witness in the room with me to hear it all. My advice to everyone is to stay away from this clinic. Dr. Brandon Whiteside is an awful human being and a terrible surgeon. If I could give him zero stars as a review, I would. read more

I really wish I thought to look at yelp before my appointment. I was kept waiting for my check up for over 15 minutes, and I arrived with my lengthy forms already filled out. The staff behind the desk is very low energy and unfriendly. The person that did the majority of my check up was nice enough, no personality. I wish they informed me I was getting my eyes dialated prior to my appointment however. The doctor himself was nice enough. This process took a full hour, which seems excessively long to me. I came prepared to buy glasses, it was the entire reason for the check up. After my check up I was told I would have to wait to be seen to pick out eyeglasses b/c someone was in front of me. I guess that is fine, however I looked around and chose my glasses I was ready to purchase in under 6 minutes and still had to wait while the other person tried on endless pairs of glasses. This seems utterly ridiculous to me. I am ready to go, just take my details and I can leave. But no i have to wait for the foreseeable future to complete the transaction. I asked if anyone else could help, they said NO. So I left. I'll buy glasses somewhere else. In the era of Warby Parker, they should get reevaluate their client approach because the need to go to a shop like this is coming to a rapid end. read more

I've been going here since 2004 & have been a patient of Dr. Branner, who I really liked...until yesterday. I had lasik surgery back in 2001 & had some issues with it. I wanted a top notch doctor who I could trust & decided on Charlotte Ophthalmology. For all these years, I had vision insurance through an employer. With me being unemployed for a while now, I was way over due for an exam & called a few weeks ago to ask about pricing for non-insured patients. I was told by a lady in the billing office that from time to time the doctors will do discounts for patients, especially those who are established & have no payment issues. She then told me a regular eye exam without insurance would be $190. Fast forward to yesterday, when I arrived for the appointment. First off, I had to wait 15 minutes before being called back. Once I got in there, Dr. Branner's assistant did the preliminary tests, dilated me, & did the glaucoma test. About 5 minutes later, Dr. Branner arrived. I very hesitantly told him my situation & he coldly told me, "I don't give discounts." I explained to him about calling the billing office, & his response was, "I don't know why they told you that, I don't do that...now I do discount surgeries with a Medicare discount, but not regular exams. We're under contract with insurance companies & will do discounts then." He went about the exam, & of course gave me the bad news that my vision had changed & I would need new lenses. Of course, another expense to tack on to my office visit fee. He did give me some samples of eye drops for my dry eye syndrome. I was almost in tears though...he had NO compassion for my situation & I felt so embarrassed even saying anything. I'm real disappointed he didn't use better "bedside manner". So, I went out to inquire about the cost of new lenses & of course, the technician automatically knew my current glasses didn't come from there. She was a bit short & to the point about giving me a price. The new lenses are going to cost me $155. I told her I couldn't afford to get them today, & she tells me, "you need to hurry up & get them though." When I asked about the pupillary distance, she stated she would only do that if I bought a whole new set of glasses from them. She wasn't going to measure it, because they would be held liable. In other words, she had a feeling I was going to take my prescription & pupillary distance measurement online. I walked away & went to check out...thankfully, my fee was only $125. Funny how at the reception desk, there's a sign saying something like, "If you're in a bad mood, ......, we will charge $10 to put up with you." Well, does that mean I can charge them for being non-compassionate to me? I'm just really turned off by how I was treated. read more

I had an eye issue for a few weeks so I went in to get it checked out. My 5 month old son came with me, as I am a stay at home mom, and we saw the technician quickly but it took forever for the doctor to come in. I got the feeling they scheduled too many appointments at the same time. Since we waited so long my son started to breakdown because he needed his nap so after all of my tricks, I turned on baby songs on my phone. Finally the doctor came in, I don't know his name because he never introduced himself, and made a few wise cracks about the music my son was listening to. I wanted to look at him and say if he didn't make me wait as long we would have been out of his office before naptime. This office was SO cold, except the technician, and we will not be going back. Went for visits in Nov 2021. My last follow up visit was coded for 3 units, or near 30 min. when it was 10 min. I brought this up to the person at the window upon checkout & they said they would take a look at it. --- Fast forward to Feb 2022. I get a bill for my visits. A phone call was made directly to the office to inquire about paying ALL charges in full & close all open charges. Payment was made on the phone and covo was to ensure no additional outstanding bills. ---- 7/13/22, 8 months after the visit and 5 months after the phone convo with Charlotte Ophthalmology, another bill was received. Suprisingly, it was for the 10 min follow up (one unit( that had originally been charged 3 units. ---- Several conversations took place with their billing dept and each time they said they understood and would send it for review & ENSURED me they would call me back with an answer. ----- Instead, I just kept getting a bill. I would call to inquire & they would say they got not response from the reviewers. The last time, 7/28/22, Deya told me my acct. would be placed on hold so I would not get billed & SHE would follow up with me with an answer. ----- On 8/18/22 rec'd yet another bill. Drove to the office. Attempted to review the scenario and the robotic woman behind the desk only wanted to explain their billing issues from a new billing source and collect their $50. Kept saying the bill I paid was in march. I had to give her my records showing the transaction number and the payment I was told was a final payment in Feb. Again, the payment that was paid on the phone, the one where it was verbally confirmed total sum paid and no other charges were due. They had plenty of opportunity to verbalize another bill was present when specifically asked. This was a follow up visit within one week of the other visits, and they waited 8 months to bill. The woman at the register showed zero concern for months of inconvenience & ineptitude, as well as zero responsibility as a healthcare provider to make things right with patients. ---- Instead, over $50 bucks, lack of communication and faulty billing procedures, they choose to loose a patient. ------ As an aside, I am in healthcare. I provide direct patient care & would never treat patients this way over a few dollars. Just shows the state of health"care" today. read more

First time going there and as the doc stated, kind of a waste of time. Charged us $164 for my 7 year old sons eye exam and didn't tell me a thing except he needs to see a pediatric ophthalmologist. They could have told me that over the phone when I booked the appointment and saved us $164 out of pocket. Lady at the front desk wasn't very helpful with my insurance questions, but I guess it's my fault for assuming an eye exam was under our vision insurance and not medical. I've been going here for several years now. I see Dr. Whiteside and find him (and his staff) to be very pleasant and thorough with my eye exam. They run on schedule so you're not left waiting in the waiting room, too...big plus. I get my glasses here, too. For the first couple of years I didn't, but once I got vision insurance that covered glasses I just found it easier to buy them here. Their selection isn't as large as a place like VisionWorks or LensCrafters but they do have a nice selection of designer frames. Turnaround is usually about two weeks or less. The ladies that work there are so good at helping pick out frames that they always suggest ones that I'd never even look at and then those are the ones I end up going with. read more

The only thing good about this place was the receptionists. My appointment with Dr. Whiteside was brusque and impersonal. Once it was over he dumped me into the glasses area without so much as a thank you or goodbye. The woman there asked what contacts I wore and if I wore them before. I said yes and she promptly walked away. So I just ignored her and went about trying to find a pair of glasses that I liked. I noticed that none of the frames had prices on them and since my goal was to stay with the allotted insurance coverage amount, I asked the price of one that I liked. You would have thought i spat on her from the way she reacted! Now thoroughly disgusted, I just pick a frame in hopes of leaving. She started reviewing the lenses packages (anti-glare, scratch, etc.) and hocking the best one plus insurance. I told her I was fine with the "standard" lens and she wouldn't stop telling me how low quality it was and that it wouldn't be covered. After stressing that understood that, she begrudgingly filled out my prescription form. Finally done, I went to check out and was told that I owed over double of what I was quoted for my glasses and frames after insurance deductions. I was told there was an additional fee for contact fittings! I asked her what fitting she was referring to because I was asked if I had worn contacts before and that was the end of it. Needless to say, outside of picking up my glasses, I will never be returning to this establish. No one seems to have any real concern for the patients at all! read more

I have been a patient of Charlotte Ophthalmology since I was 12. I began with Dr. Woody. The last two years at this location, however, I have been so disappointed with the lack of patient care. The technician who does all the initial tests was completely rude and cold. Having to wait in a dark room, not being able to see, and wait for quite some time is a lack of care for a patient. DO NOT USE DR COOK FOR YOUR SURGEY. I wish I had read the reviews before being taken in by his credentials. He is not a compassionate surgeon. I worked for 5 surgeons who spent endless time with each patient no matter how long it would take them. I went to see Dr. Cook to have some innocuous lesions removed from my lower lids, instead, I was immediately talked into a lower blepharoplasty after the assistant took close up pictures of my eyes and told me how awful they looked. He did the first surgery and the R-eye hemorrhaged inside terribly, also the sutures were burned by the aesthetician, and had to be redone 3 days later. Five months later I still have suture lines and scars. My lower lid is protruded and I have extremely dry eyes now. At my one month check up the assistants told me there were still fat pockets, that had risen to the top of the lower lid, and needed more surgery. Dr. Cook did the removal without anything but a little injection of local anesthesia. IT HURT LIKE CRAZY. I begged him to stop and he had no COMPASSION AT ALL. He breezes in and out of the office and talks to you almost not at all. I also paid $1,000 out of my pocket for the aesthetician to do some CO2 laser for the lesions which still remained after the surgery. She never did a thing, and I am out $1,000 for nothing! I have called and called for 5 months and no one has returned my calls. I have requested a refund for services not rendered, and have received nothing!!!! PLEASE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GO TO THIS OFFICE AND CHOOSE ANOTHER OCULAR PLASTIC SURGEON. DR COOK AND HIS STAFF DO NOT PROVIDE THE RESULTS THAT SHOULD BE ACHIEVED.!!!!!! read more
