Sadly, this company has turned out to be less than one star quality. They did try to help correct their unusable digitization work. However, after we spent hours helping them to correct the significant problems, we had to consult an experienced archivist for his opinion. He concluded the work would never be of high enough quality to be usable. As Charter Oak states that satisfaction is guaranteed, we asked for a refund. Instead of working with us or coming to any kind of agreement, the owner of the company has completely ignored emails and written correspondence. Very friendly, personal and professional (and local) people to work with, which is why I'm giving them two stars instead of one. However, unlike the other reviewers, they failed to convert my Hi8 tapes successfully. Given that all the other reviews are 5 star, I'm clearly the outlier. We're all human, so maybe I had a random poor outcome. Earlier this year, I reviewed four tapes on my Hi8 player and decided that I wanted to convert them to MP4 and keep them. Charter Oak Scanning is close to where I live, so I chose them to do the job and sent the tapes off. Shortly thereafter, they contacted me to say that they were able to convert the video portion of the tapes, but not the audio. That seemed strange to me, because the audio was fine when I played the tapes on my Hi8 player. I told them this and they tried again, unsuccessfully. They sent the converted videos and the original tapes back to me and I found, indeed, that the MP4's had no audio. Not satisfied with this outcome, I went online again and found an outfit called Southtree. I shipped my tapes off to them and they returned perfect MP4's with the audio intact, along with my originals. So, I'm left with the impression that either Charter Oak has inadequate equipment or else their staff needs more training. Or, maybe everyone just had an off day. In any case, I was out more than $70 and had to start over. Update: Robert, the owner of Charter Oak, responded to my email to him right away, offering a refund. So I stand by my initial comment that these are friendly, personal and professional people. My experience with them just wasn't successful. read more

My family has used Charter Oak for scanning services on 3 occasions and I cannot say enough good things about them. They make pickup and drop-off extremely easy. They actively communicate throughout the process to make sure they scan what you want the way you want. They are a local company, but prices are better than anything I could find online. They handled all types of media for us (slides, photos, mini-vhs, documents) and now our memories are forever preserved! read more

I had an old photo that was water damaged and stuck to a piece of glass. There were no other copies in existence. Over the past 20 years, I've contacted many photo restoration businesses but none were able to restore it. I came upon Charter Oak Scanning by accident one day.
