On my recent trip to Colorado I stopped by the Beaver Creek Nordic Sports Center to rent some…read moresnowshoe gear for the day. I've rented gear from this location many times before, and it's always been a pleasant experience, but I felt like my recent visit was less than enjoyable. Laurie assisted us, and when I opened the door to the shop she told us to wait outside, she was on the telephone at the time, and it appears that she was the only one in the shop. So we waited outside, and a couple minutes later she comes out and asks us what we need, she seemed a bit frazzled at the time. We let her know that we're here to rent gear for the day. While sitting outside she has us fill out the paperwork and she brings some hiking shoes for us to try on. Once we tried on boots that fit, she asked for our credit cards, and took them back inside the shop to ring us out. It seemed to be taking a little long, so I thought it might be a good idea to check and see what was going on. When I opened the door to the shop she tells me that my credit card is being declined, and I thought that was strange because I just used it to get a cup of coffee within the last 30 mins and it was working fine at that time. I started to approach the counter because I noticed they have a credit card machine with the chip reader and perhaps she needed to insert my card in there for it to work, and once I do that she puts her hand up and tells me "can you just stand over there". She then walks to the front of the counter and my credit card works when she inserts the chip. After that she comes outside to give us our receipts and says we're good to go, and then I ask her to please explain how to put on the snowshoe gear because my mom has never done this before. She did explain the gear and made sure our poles were at the correct height after I asked her to, however as soon as someone else walked up to the shop, she was quickly walking away and I had to raise my voice and say "Wait a second, we would like to use the restroom before we get on the lift can you please give us the code?" The entire interaction with Laurie was very strange. Usually they would give you a map and share their recommendations of where to hike depending on your skills level. I'm not sure if this was stopped due to COVID-19 protocols or if she just forgot to do it. She seemed a bit rushed or perhaps she wants to limit customer interaction as much as possible due to the COVID-19 situation, but whatever the reason I didn't feel like it was good customer service. I've gone on multiple tours and rented gear in the past, and it's always been great. I understand that with the COVID-19 situation some changes needed to be made (i.e. trying on gear outside, leaving your shoes in bins outside), but if an employee is so fearful of what's going on that they come across with an attitude, perhaps they shouldn't be in a customer facing role, there has to be a happy medium. I wish the best for this shop, but definitely feel like they would benefit from having more of a friendly and warm approach, providing excellent customer service at a distance if they want those customers returning. Without customers there will not be a Nordic Center in Beaver Creek, and that would be a real shame because McCoy Park is such a lovely place to explore.

But they've changed policies and now you will be competing with downhill skiers and snowboarders for the trails. Serenity and the mystic experience of the mountains is gone! The people at the Nordic Center are nice enough, but don't bother with tours here or trying to enjoy McCoy if you want to snowshoe or cross country unless you like paying top dollar for not much.

They should just say it is $50 for "parking" versus "valet." My bed was comfortable. The room had a little kitchen: a coffee maker, glasses, plates, cups, flatware, a little fridge and a microwave. There was a fireplace. I had a tub and a nice vanity to sit at to get ready. I could open the windows to let outside air in, which was lovely. Front desk staff were kind. Walking, bus ride or driving... no more than 15 mins Clean - the place was spotless the moment we entered the room, and about every 2 days we had everything replaced in the room. The hotel also was very clean. Hospitality - everyone was soooo nice! It honestly seemed like a Colorado thing but I was impressed. Con: Dated - the resort is dated for sure but you can tell there are upgrades happening over time. Bathroom was redone for sure. There does need to be a bit of tender love and care for some of the appliances and decor but it was still insanely comfortable. While there may have been more things that were either a pro or con, these were what stood out the most. There's a lot of pricey, new and upscale locations all around Avon, but to be honest during my first stay in Colorado, this was perfect for my family. I had no complaints from the kids, and very little from the adults. As a reviewer, I sometimes have a hard time reading reviews. Disappointing experience for a romantic getaway I want to be…read morevery clear from the outset: the staff at the Ritz-Carlton Beaver Creek were absolutely fantastic. They were warm, welcoming, professional, and genuinely tried their best throughout our stay. My disappointment is not with the people working at the hotel--it is with the management, planning, communication, and overall operation of the property. My wife and I booked this stay specifically for a romantic break. I have been traveling extensively, and we were really looking forward to some quiet time together. Unfortunately, we were not informed when booking that there would be a large wedding taking place at the property during our stay. When we raised this concern, we were told that the hotel could not tell us that a wedding was taking place because of privacy considerations. I found that explanation difficult to understand. We weren't asking for the names of the couple, details about the wedding, or any private information whatsoever. Simply letting guests know that a large wedding or private event would be taking place at the resort is basic information about the environment they should expect during their stay, not a breach of anyone's privacy. The wedding itself was clearly a high-energy event, and while I have absolutely nothing against weddings or people celebrating, the atmosphere was completely at odds with the quiet, romantic getaway we were expecting. Had we known in advance, we simply would have chosen somewhere else. More importantly, the impact went beyond the atmosphere. The hotel appeared to be operationally overwhelmed by the event. There simply did not seem to be enough staffing or inventory available to adequately serve the other guests staying at the hotel. At around 10 p.m., we attempted to order room service. We were told that the only option available was a Caesar salad without protein because multiple other menu items had sold out. This wasn't an isolated case of one particular item being unavailable--it seemed that multiple menu options and ingredients were no longer available. We experienced something similar at the Japanese restaurant. Again, the service from the staff was fantastic. They were doing everything they could, but effective inventory management should be a fundamental part of operating a property at this level. If a hotel is expecting a significant increase in occupancy and demand because of a major event, it should be anticipating that demand and ensuring it has sufficient stock to deliver the experiences and menu choices it is advertising. The staff were not the problem. The operational planning was. We did raise our concerns during the stay, and unfortunately, at one point the conversation seemed to shift toward the fact that our reservation had been made using Marriott Bonvoy points. I found that particularly disappointing. How a guest has paid for their room should not determine the quality of experience they receive. I am a long-standing member of the Marriott ecosystem, and one of the reasons people consistently choose to stay within a hotel group is the expectation that loyalty will provide a consistent experience across the brand. Whether a stay is paid for with cash, points, or a combination of the two, the guest is still occupying the same room and should receive the same standard of hospitality. In this instance, I simply did not feel that the value proposition of being a loyal Marriott guest was reflected in our experience. At some point, management needs to decide what this property wants to be. If it is going to operate as a major wedding and events destination, that can certainly make sense from a revenue perspective. But if that is the strategy, the hotel needs to ensure it has the staffing, inventory, communication, and operational capacity to continue providing an exceptional experience to the other guests staying at the property. Right now, it feels like the property is trying to do both, but the experience for non-event guests can suffer significantly as a result. The biggest disappointment was for my wife. We booked this as a chance to reconnect and have a quiet, romantic break after a period when I have been traveling extensively. Instead, the overall experience left her genuinely let down. To be absolutely clear: this is not a criticism of the staff. They were lovely, fantastic, and did everything they could. This is a criticism of management and the operational decisions surrounding the event. If you are looking for a romantic couples' getaway, I would strongly recommend considering an alternative property in the Beaver Creek/Vail area. If you are looking for a wedding venue, however, this may be a very different story. For us, unfortunately, it was a two-star experience and a significant disappointment given what we expected from a Ritz-Carlton.

It should be mentioned that Chef Richard Sandoval is leaving so Stoke & Rye is being repurposed into an Italian eatery under the guidance of a new Chef - we look forward to experiencing this new venue. We held an arrival dinner for our guests in a private space - the Osprey Room - and the food, drink, and ambiance were exceptional. The room was cozy yet spacious and created a warm, welcoming environment for our guests who traveled from all three coasts. We want to make particular mention of our hostess, Sonja Eichenberger. Sonja managed every aspect of our affair, ensuring every dimension of a large party was attended to the last detail. Sonja listened to the Bride's comments and discerned solutions that were both creative and thoughtful. We had several dignitaries in our party - two Senators, a US Attorney, and a Fox News commentator - and Sonja saw to it that consideration was made for both their privacy and security. Much of the success of our special event rests with Sonja. The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa at Avon is an exquisitely fashionable property but it is the staff that makes the experience special. Thank you Sonja for making our week at the Westin a lifelong memory!
