The beautiful vines at Chateau de Pique.
    Julianne S.

My husband and I visited Chateau de Pique for the first time. We were on our way to Indianapolis for the weekend and were enjoying stops along the Indiana Wine Trail. The winery itself is quite picturesque, so make sure you take time to enjoy the grounds during your visit. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and happy to stand and chat during your tasting. Chateau de Pique offers a selection of dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines, so you're sure to find something to please your palate.

    Fun venue

Nice venue just on rhe outskirts of town, just folliow the GPS and come out to enjoy some live music (call to check schedules) and try some enjoyable bottles of wine. Many are lighter and sweeter wines, even some with fun names. Enjoyed '50 shades of Red" and one for the road. They have wine slushies, sangria and bottles to try. Vineyards are expansive rows with lots of grapes on the vines this summer. Worthy of a visit in this small town.

We stop at literally every winery that we see... no matter the area, how crazy looking it is (and we've seen everything from a tiny trailer to a chateau)... generally, when driving through the country we don't expect to have amazing wine or an amazing ambiance (but we think these little side wineries make any trip... no matter the length... more fun). MUCH to our surprise... this winery was great!!! It's a little off the hwy (65, outside of Indianapolis) but WORTH the 5 or so mile drive out of your way. It's set on a hill with beautiful vineyards, an event tent (that's nice, not trashy), a wedding gazebo and a beautiful barn like tasting room with a gorgeous patio that looks like it would be relaxing to sit on when the weather is warm. Inside you'll find an expansive log cabin like tasting room with a friendly event planner/tasting room manager manning the bar. They have everything from Port to southern sweet to Riesling to Cab Franc to Merlot and just about every varietal in between. They grow some of their grapes onsite and procure many from the Columbia Valley in Washington. They blend, bottle, label; right on site. Surprisingly... VERY surprisingly their wine is pretty decent. It's a little overpriced for it's quality, but tastings are free. They also have beer on tap, by the bottle and softdrinks. During the warmer months they have cookouts and host many weddings & events at their facility, according to our tasting room host. We bought a bottle of the Cab Franc as a souvenir ($20, including tax) & also bought a wine glass ($3.95). The tasting room manager encouraged us to walk around the grounds and check out the very large chapel above the tasting room (it was HUGE and would be nice when decorated for a Wedding). She also gave us a wine country map (who knew there was a huge wine trail... like 40+ wineries w/ tasting rooms) in Indiana. We look forward to venturing out & trying some more... perhaps we'll be as pleasantly surprised as we were at Chateau De Pique!

Splitting a bottle of blush with some friends on a gorgeous day!

Our best friends live in Louisville, we live in Indy. Every other month we try to find a new dining location & something to do about halfway between our houses, usually in the Columbus or Seymour area because of the close proximity to I-65. This month, we opted for lunch at a place in Seymour & then we kept our options open for a post-meal activity. We ended up deciding to visit Chateau de Pique Winery to split a bottle of wine & continue our conversation. This review is mainly about the ambiance/experience, and less about the wine. Like almost all Indiana wines, everything I sampled tasted way too sweet to me. My husband & our friends like sweet wines though, so we settled on a bottle of blush. The tasting was free as long as you purchased a bottle of wine, which we were going to do anyway. Bonus! It was a gorgeous day (for an Indiana summer, anyway), so we opted to sit outside. It was quiet (minus our own laughing/talking), and peaceful, and it was a quaint place to sit & talk. We enjoyed it, and most likely we will be back!

Nice little winery. We stopped after a long day traveling. Nice wines and a good charcuterie board. I will return if in the area.

This place also has outdoor seating with umbrellas. We opted to sit inside this time, but we have sit outside many of times. Great place, great employees, and excellent food. Wait time for food was slow and one of the owners was not very nice to "his" staff. He did this known in front of customers, which I thought was a real negative. Hence the four stars. So flavorful and fresh. Definitely 5 stars!

First things first, we (4 of us) put our names on the tea room waiting list. Then we shopped for our gardens. I'd selected the plants I wanted to buy, and then it was time for lunch. Our name was next on the list. We stood waiting for the hostess when a pushy woman and two men climbed onto the porch in front of us. The woman insisted on being seated. The hostess explained that the kitchen was backed up and she couldn't seat them. Said woman loudly insisted that they 'only wanted to sit and they wouldn't be ordering anything'. A manager came out and the old woman tried to establish that a relationship existed with her and the owner. She insisted again that they be seated. They were, and immediately got wine, silverware and menus. All of this in front of us, the party that was standing waiting. At that point we said we were next on the list, but since they had not only been seated, but served before us we would leave without eating and without buying the plants we'd come to purchase. The kicker is that there were MANY seating choices outside in the shade that these people should have been directed to rather than being seated in front of us. And we left - never to return. We didn't even get an "I'm sorry." Addendum, all was not lost. We drove to a new-to-us restaurant in Seymour IN, and had great service and great food for much less than this would have cost! Addendum 2: to the person who responded to this review yesterday, thank you. I can't find your response now, but I appreciate your comments and that you took the time to explain the situation.

There is now a restaurant, distillery, brewery in addition to the winery. We ended up having lunch before doing a wine tasting. I generally have low expectations for Indiana wines, and this was pretty much what I expected. Of the four wines in my flight, I couldn't even finish two of them. (A shame since they charge more for a flight than any other IN winery I've been to -- $14 for 4 wines!) The Cab/Zin blend was not too bad -- better than I had expected, actually, so the tasting was off to a good start. But the dry Riesling was awful. It had a distinct funk to it. As a wine specialist, I feel like I should be able to describe it better than that, but I didn't want to keep sipping to identify the "funk" more precisely. The semi-dry Riesling was drinkable (but way sweeter than semi-dry). The "semi-sweet" Traminette was full-on, dessert wine level super-sweet and lacking any acidity to balance out the sweetness. I couldn't finish that one either because I was actually starting to feel a little sick from the intense sweetness. My husband liked the Zin in his flight, and I thought it was okay. I also tasted his blackberry wine. I usually like blackberry wines because they have acidity & tartness to balance the sweetness, but this one did not. It was just all sweet. The service was fine, and the atmosphere was nice. I enjoyed the classic rock music. The winery shares space with 450 North. I can't say anything about the 450 North stuff or the restaurant because I don't like beer and we didn't get food, so the two stars is based on wine quality alone. I'm glad we stopped by so I know what it is, but we definitely won't go out of our way to visit again.

But there is another distillery quietly making small-batch, high-quality spirits in Nashville, and that's Bear Wallow Distillery. Located just outside of downtown Nashville, Bear Wallow Distillery is one of the only female-owned distilleries in the country. They create their spirits in a traditional copper pot still, which I learned is unique. Inside the tasting room, you can enjoy a whiskey tasting or a flight, or sip a craft cocktail and relax in the shop. I chose to enjoy a "Call Me Old Fashioned" standing up at the bar, while chatting with the guy who made me my drink. My Old Fashioned was well balanced, not too sweet and made me feel all warm inside, as a good Old Fashioned should. Those who are interested in learning more about the whiskey-making craft can go on a Farm-to-Fifth Tour, which takes you behind the scenes to learn about the history of whiskey and see the full production process.
