I've been here before, was thrilled to return thanks to a Living Social deal they had going!! Food was out of this world and the ambiance eating outside on the patio was great in this weather. I've never written a review before but I've also never been so frustrated with an order, so I went to the whole hassle of making an account just to write about how annoyed I am. I ordered my meal via a food delivery service (no blame or fault to them) and my order arrived entirely wrong. For starters, I hate olives, so I ordered my burger with no olives, please. However, my burger arrived teeming with olives. I don't know how they managed to fit so many on there. They were glued down (via the cheese) to the bun which was glued down to the patty, so there was no hope of removing them. Besides that, I ordered their special sauce (which was pretty expensive) and never received any. The rest of the order was mediocre at best. Very disappointing. read more

We had been to the Chatterbox location in St. Paul several times before it closed. But we never made it over to this location until recently. We were drawn to the Chatterbox because of a beer tasting of some very special beer we love. That was awesome. Food-wise, I was so disappointed to find that the lobster mac and cheese is no longer on the menu (there is still mac and cheese but no lobster). We ordered the wings, which were just OK. The skin was flabby and they tasted like they were just covered Frank's hot sauce. Would not order again. Fortunately, the pizza we ordered was very good. We really liked the thickness and the crunch of the crust. We ate the whole thing. It was nice to see some kind of throwbacks to the other Chatterbox - including the Lite Brite and the stack of board games to play. Service was good - our server was really nice. read more

I'm sorry to say that this establishment has gone downhill in the past 10 years. It used to be one of my favorite dive bars to frequent. You can tell by the change in the clientele. I used to go in there on a weeknight and it was jampacked with people. Now I go in there and I have been the only person in the entire bar. I had been eager to try the deep dish pizza for months, and WOW what a disappointment it was. Arrived smelling very strongly of the same dirty cast iron smell you'll notice outside the restaurant. Opened the box and it's just like a bowl of tomato soup surrounded by old dry bread. The (overly abundant) sauce tastes like it came out of a jar, with way too much onion; there is not much for cheese inside; and the worst part: for some reason the "pizza" has this disgusting chemical taste, similar to the smell of some sh*tty plastics as they melt/burn. Additional annoyance: they didn't cut the pizza all the way through. I have never in my life before this spent almost $30 on ONE pizza, and I have never in my life thrown away a pizza. Today is the day they both happen. I recall enjoying their regular pizza quite a bit some years ago, but the deep dish is an absolute joke. Great spot! As a former Katie, I was so sad when they closed the location on Ford Parkway. A little piece of my college experience felt like it was gone. However, reminiscing aside, I was happy to find this location in Hiawatha. Though the vibe is much more neighborhood watering hole than hipster hangout, the food and beer menus have enough to tempt the taste buds of us nostalgic folks. I ordered the Chatterbox Speakeasy Lager Fish and Chips, and absolutely fell in love with them, which quickly surpassed my former favorite at Anchor in Northeast. This is the chatterbox for me. It kinda smells. The food is not anything special. The beer is run of the mill. They often don't have the wine that's listed on the menu. The service isn't going to blow your skirt up anytime soon. But.... It's comfortable. I can bring my little darlings here and play a game and have a glass of wine and mac n cheese. I was not very impressed with the Chatterbox. Admittedly, I don't love games. I don't even really like them, except for scrabble and I guess Atari - but I want to play those at home, not at the bar. They do this "team" thing, so you don't have just one waiter, you have, say, five different people. And on the few time I've been there, this means they forget to bring me things. Or ignore me, probably by accident - but that's not okay. Their beer is just okay, and so it the food. I'll have people disagree I'm sure, but for the price, you can do much better. I'm one of those people who'll happily pay $10 for a burger. But I want a BURGER, a delicious, interesting burger for that money. Not to be found here. My wife and I has a $20 Groupon for Chatterbox. We entered the bar side, I guess there is a whole other side with tables which we didn't realize. We sat down at the booth and I ordered a Bubblejack IPA. The menu had a plethora of options, I opted for the hot sauce pizza. My wife got the side salad with ranch. (The fajita ranch was amazing!) The individual size pizza was very nice, I ordered light cheese and light on the bacon. It was done perfectly. Lots of meat on top and crispy crust. The decor was pretty dark inside. I ordered a second beer and laughed with my wife. Our server was very nice and then I saw it! Paperboy! The video game I played a million times 20 years ago. I got through three days and reminisced. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday on a Sunday night because I'd heard good things about it and we LOVE video games. I really wanted to have a good time but from the get-go it was nothing special. No one greeted us or told us how the pub worked (games, etc). We seated ourselves and waited for a waitress. Two women helped us out but one of them didn't seem to know what was going on. We had to ask for a game "menu" and when we chose one THEN she told us the Nintendo was broken and that the only Atari they had was being used. Poor service and communication. The food was something I could have made much better in my kitchen. We ordered the fondue and it came with a bowl of cheese that was filmed over, old bread, and Crystal Farms cheese that we buy from the grocery store (along with popcorn that had clearly been sitting for a while or even popped in the microwave!) After always walking my dogs past the restaurant, we finally decided to order delivery from Chatterbox Pub! It's cool they offer delivery and take out during COVID. They have a wide range of food... everything from pizza to mac n' cheese to burgers. Something to please everyone! Although their vegan and gluten free options are kind of limited (they do have GF bread and pizza dough). My Fiancé got the olive burger and I ordered the mushroom burger. Both of us really liked the flavor combinations of the burgers, but the patty itself seemed thin and kind of low quality. The fries were crispy and nicely seasoned though. All in all, I'm down to order from Chatterbox again but don't think they have the best burgers in town. This is the coziest, most homely bar I have ever been to. The tables are pretty close together - I loved the vibe of this place. Although I didn't order any food, all my friends' meal items looked absolutely amazing, including the veggie burger a vegetarian friend ordered. That is rare in pub or bar food. There's an Atari and other old school consoles, comfy sofa chairs, and video games for rent. However, we were able to play for free and staff was very friendly in helping troubleshoot some technical problems. (Not sure if the free gaming was a fluke or if the staff were being lax about it.) We also had a nice time playing Clue. They have a very unique selection of brews including drinks from Colorado and California, as well as local beverages and their own in-house drafts! I had the Dark Horse Raspberry Ale from Colorado, and if I'm being perfectly honest, it had heavy notes of Nyquil, but to each their own. You might like it, but if you're feeling risk-averse, there are a wealth of other options to choose from. read more

Cindy is definitely one of my favorite bartenders/servers ever to walk the earth. Shawn brings great energy to the night life. They brew their own beer and serve wine and sake, no hard alcohol. The atmosphere was very cool by what I read on reviews. It felt like I was a kid again and that's why we went, for the whimsy and fun of it all, but that was soon over. We had gone memorial weekend. I was disappointed as soon as I sat down briefly asking the bartender if they still had their carrot cake there that I read about. Very rudley he placed menus in front of us and said no. Then proceeded to walk away. My boyfriend and I sat there for a good 10 minutes and he never came back to ask for drinks or even acknowledge us. AND THE PLACE WAS EMPTY!!! Went tonight (7/13/22) because I wanted to introduce my friend to one of my favorite restaurants. We get a couple beers at the bar and settled into the back room (it's quieter) but after 15 minutes & no service we went to the patio. There we sat for another 15 min, having the server walk by repeatedly and still getting no service. At this point we got up and got a booth near the bar and luckily the bartender came and got our orders. This place is most definitely a hidden gem! With two locations in Midtown Minneapolis and Linden Hills Minneapolis, I went to the one in Midtown which is located on a corner via a south Minneapolis neighborhood. I came in on a cloudy Thursday afternoon around 12:30pm with my coworkers for an off-site team outing. When we entered we weren't greeted right away as there wasn't anyone around. A super chill, pub-y vibe. Vintage-style interior decorated with mirrors on the wall and records/vinyl disco covers. Also, the music was absolutely on point. The lighting was a tad bit dim which I wasn't a fan of however. Thank goodness they had wide windows! The building has two sides that are split. One side is just the bar area with booths and the other side is a dining area with tables and booths as well as two "lounge" areas with couches and tvs where you can play classic games on Nintendo and Sega! It also has a tv that plays cartoon shows as well! As we found seating, we were then greeted right away by a staff; friendly and smiley and came to take of drink orders right away. The menu has a great variety of options to choose from, good selection of drinks and even have a kids menu. I went with a Ranchero Pie - which had a chili soup kinda base, topped with garlic roasted mashed potatoes, cheese and sour cream. It was perfect on a cloudy day and it tasted amazing but I kinda wish I had gotten something else because I was soooo hungry and didn't feel quite satisfied. Three of my coworkers shared a Hawaiian pizza and they a mentioned that it's probably one the best pizzas they have ever ate! The co-owner came by to clear our table and they asked what it was that they put in there....the co-owner explained how they cook/make the pizza and mentioned a few of the ingredients they use. I really enjoyed hearing the history as well as how passionate he was about their food and pizzas. He recommended trying the Mac Attack pizza next time we're in. Also, they do Bite squad as well!! I am definitely looking forward to trying the two pizzas out next time. Another great thing about this place is that they have a big hutch filled with boards games such as Jenga, Scattergories, Candyland, Scrabble, Checkers, Chess, would you Rather, etc. to name a few so you can play while waiting for the food to come out or after your done chowing down and still want to hangout. If I could give them all five stars, I would but I didn't because the service was just so terribly slow as we waited about nearly an hour for our food to come out. My team (which was a group of 11) were the only customers at that time besides this other family of 4 who were just finishing up their Lunch. I'm not sure what took so long but It's possible that they could of have only had one chef at the time. OMG the hellcat inferno salad is so good it's insane. I am addicted. I get the chicken on the side (to donate to Hubby) and the salad is tons of romaine topped with fajita ranch and guacamole as the dressing. Then you have a pile of red peppers, pumpkin seeds, and cheddar cheese on top. It's huge. Then, you get a side of some crunchy tortilla with black bean filling kind of like a quesadilla no cheese. I'm sure it's not the least bit healthy as far as salads go, but it's so good I dont care. Also, try the Philosopher's Stone. It's a cider-tinted amber ale and it's my favorite local beer in the Twin Cities. read more

Chatterbox is a fun, friendly place. I've never regretted a trip there. If you live nearby, it is THE place to go. If you don't, it's still worth the trip. A neighborhood bar is by itself a special place. Knowing your neighbors, knowing the staff and actually meeting people is always fun, and something you can rarely find in the watered down, sterile confines of chain businesses. Chatterbox takes this worthy perch and rises above it, so well so that it's few nagging details become magnified (almost leading me to knock a star off). How dare they get in the way of perfection? Chatterbox is immediately welcoming and intimate, it's decor fitting somewhere on that continuum of hipster bar to your parent's basement. The staff is usually wonderful (except that one girl I got a couple times last year. She was a little maladjusted for a service job), and do an impressive job of managing the place when it gets packed. Where it really rises above your average neighborhood bar is in everything it offers. Yeah, pretty much everything. The retro video games get all the attention, and they are fun, but it's often a false promise. They have two sets, so you better get in there early if you want them. Whoever has them at 9pm tends to have them for the evening (at least on weekends). One of my minor strikes against the place is that even if the people on them have stopped playing, they are never asked to relocate to a table so someone else can have a turn. If you come here just for the video games, you are more likely to be disappointed. They also have a bunch of old board games. These are much easier to get a crack at, and I have had many a fun night playing scrabble, battleship, life, cribbage or whatever came up. Their drinks menu has recently switched to a number of micro brewed beers, and a few others that I don't even remember. No home runs in the mix, but a good collection of solid baserunners. Never wandered into the wines or wine based concoctions. Liquor is not available because of some weird zoning/liquor law (they even had to sell 3.2 when they first opened). I regrettably have to mark them down as one of the many Minneapolis establishments that doesn't know how to pour a beer (list forthcoming). Give me some head! Someday, I hope to start a scholarship fund to send bartenders to Europe for a crash course in how to pour a beer. The food is a standout. Above average bar fare here, bordering on the fancy. A trip here just for a meal is perfectly justified. Flip through the menu and you will be astounded by what they attempt and pull off with such a tiny kitchen. A five star rating rarely comes down to the details for me. It's more about your gut reaction to a place. Chatterbox is a fantastic place to me. I've never had a bad time, I've never turned down an offer to go there. It's the kind of place I take out of towners to show them how cool the twin cities are, and a place I frequent. Every trip is almost like rediscovering the place, like reaching into your pocket and finding a twenty you forgot you had. read more

Please forgive me. This is probably all around one of my favorite spots in the city. I think this was the first bar I was taken to after turning 21...not counting Matts, which is where I celebrated my 21st birthday. Considering how small it is, it amazes me that every time I have gone I managed to snag a couch. Im not sure what type of marinade they use on their burgers, but they taste like slaughtered cow heaven. Usually when I go, I get Ninja Gaiden, a burger, and that fake ass Blue Moon that they serve. It's inbetween "meh" and "A-OK". Nothing overly special here. Chatterbox has never seemed to live up to it's potential, in my humble opinery. A place that has classic video games and board games? Sounds so great, except that adults tend to chit chat at bars so the games are never really enjoyed by myself or my group. The "brew pub" concept is a great one overall, but other places do it better with much better beers. No hard liquor either? Hmmmm. The food is not good. Just blah. I've been to all locations of the "box" and all have been decent experiences. Not the greatest but certainly not the worst. The problem is that in this economy, when I go out to have a night where real money is spent, I expect to be at least slightly wowed. Visited the chatterbox last night with fellow Yelper Josh E and my boyfriend. We were impressed with their home brew beer selections; I tried the White Ale (lacking a little flavor) and the EPA, which was all our favorite. A really big glass of beer is only $3.75. We all shared the Cinco De Mayo dip which was good, but had a little too much black bean and not enough fresh tomatoes/ onions. I ordered the Basic Burger with a Veg patty and substituted a bowl of their Tomato Dill soup. The veg patty was tough and over cooked, and it was served on house focaccia bread, not a bun. I liked the bread but it was too crusty to be paired with a sandwich, a slice on top and bottom made for a too thick burger that cut your mouth with crusty-ness. It was all bread and little burger. I opted to take of the top and eat it with the soup; I prefer my tomato soup to be more creamy and thinner. This soup was fairly thick and a little too sweet, you couldn't really taste the dill and it was more of an orange color than a deep red. Bummer :( However their game selection was great, we spent dinner and an hour after playing the TV trivia game, having a great time! The place in general is pretty fun and a little over stimulating, there are TV's playing shows, TV's for video games, and TV's for playing trivia while they blast music. There are windows, but they don't open so it got really stuffy and warm where we were sitting. I would go back for drinks and I would like to try the pizza. Putting hot bbq sauce on a cheddar bacon burger is neither "gourmet" nor worth $9. If you're going to take bar food away from the tasty basics, you need to do the little things right, (like making the fries crispy,) before you start in with the fancy-shmancy touches, (like adding seasoning to the fries.) The beer list, while decent, isn't as impressive as the reviews here suggest; (Pilsener Urquell? Really? Can't I just pay you to have a skunk spray in my mouth?) and frankly, it's all overpriced. Brit's downtown charges $5.50 for a 20 oz. Fuller's ESB, and everyone bitches about the prices; the Chatterbox charges $6 for a 22 oz. We strolled in, got cozy, and were treated very well by the bartender. He gave me a few samples of wine to help me find one that didn't make me go "pleh!" Neither my boy or I drink booze, so it can be hard to find a place to go at night that is fun and where our waiters don't suddenly disregard us when we order Coke or water. But thankfully, just a few blocks from our house is The Chatterbox Pub. Where the root beer flows and we can battle to the death in Connect Four. I love scurrying in here when it's below zero and the windows are all foggy. The grilled cheese is super-original, and quite unlike anything I've tried elsewhere. I don't think I have had a bad thing to eat here at all actually. And that chocolate fondue is pretty sweet, even though our cookies were a little hard. Yum yum. read more
