Stopped into Hi-Lo Diner while visiting Minneapolis because my girlfriend said it was her favorite restaurant and wow this place gets it. I ordered the Nashville Hot chicken and it was incredible. It was crispy, oversized, extremely hot, I was crying after eating it. My girlfriend got the eggs Benedict, which she loved, and I stole some of. The real star of this restaurant is the donuts and spicy cheese curds though. I would literally travel back to Minneapolis just for those. I think I dream about them in my sleep. The vibe is great inside, it's retro, but not in a try-hard way. Solid service as well they're just so sweet and local. Must try spot if you're visiting Minneapolis. read more

The veg was a very not cut correctly: chunks of green bell peppers and over chunky sliced onions that were not cooked through. Please stop being lazy and chop your veg and cook the onion . Green salad was hot Not impressed. And the Bloody Mary mix is sub par. However, the diner is cute and service is good. Second visit: had to sit at counter which is fine. They were busy. The bad: Bloody Mary's were flat and expensive $13 each. No depth of flavor, thought we would give them a second chance. . Ordered croquette madame. Egg was severely undercooked - the egg white was gelatatinous and the bread way too thick, ham fatty and subpar, where were you Béchamel? I took a bite of my breakfast and he hands me a box at the end when I asked for the check--not asking if anything is wrong. Two bites out of the spring mix salad and sandwich. Bloody Mary full. $70 for a salad, madame croquette, slow service which is no problem. It's a tiny diner and around lunch time. No worries there. But uncomfortable dining service because we could feel the tension between the server and bartender. Again for me? NBD but my daughter did not appreciate this. The good: the Mediterranean salad was delicious according to my daughter. She had the same thoughts about the Bloody Marys. Super cute beer backs- pony miller high life. I brought the croque madame home and my son loved it. Went on and on about how amazing it was. In all fairness my adult kids loved their food. He did microwave it to cook the egg through. Yes I know I am picky because I worked in the restaurant industry for over 22 years. And I can make better food at home. I just expect a bit more if I am going to drop $70 for two lunch entrees and two drinks. Not including the tip. We had a nice breakfast at the Hi-Lo today. I had a hot chocolate, pancakes & hash browns. My wife ordered coffee and Eggs Benedict. The food arrived promptly, hot and tasty. The pancakes filled the plate and were thick as well. The hash browns were crispy and delicious. My wife's eggs benny was a great portion and rich, rich, rich. Recently went here for dinner & was reminded how great it is we have this neighborhood diner. I've been here before for brunch but glad I tied it at night too. I highly recommend the fried chicken sandwich! It was perfectly seasoned, crispy & juicy and I was so impressed. I can't just try 1 thing so my friend and I actually shared 2 sandwiches. The other sandwich was the Cuban and it was good, just not as wow as the other one. They also have a number of drink options from local breweries and cideries. The server was super nice. The interior is casual, nothing fancy but bright and a full room. Bathroom are single gender and also clean. I also saw they have crayons and made future note that this is a kid-friendly place. My last story associated with Hi-Lo is that the last time I was here, I was wearing my "Sioux Chef" tshirt and in walked the Sioux Chef himself, aka Sean Sherman. This old-time diner is a favorite for our relatives in Minneapolis. Service is so friendly and very efficient. We got lucky at prime brunch time on a Sunday to get seated in a booth pretty quickly. Coffees were brought and kept filled for the coffee drinkers. My Denver omelet was delicious and you can't beat their perfectly cooked hashbrowns. Real hashbrowns! What a cool spot! I drove past this diner often and have always wanted to check it out! They have a parking lot that you can access but I'm sure gets busy in the summer when their patio is open. The diner has plenty of seating options and can accommodate 5-7 people parties pretty easily, beyond that might be difficult. I came on a Saturday night, the diner was not too busy and the service was friendly and quick. Thee vibe here is family friendly. They do have a bar so this could be a cool spot to catch up with friends, go on a date or chill with someone and have a drink. The food here is great! Who doesn't like a good classic breakfast?! The portion sizes are typical of diners, everything tastes great, nothing out of the ordinary. I will definitely be back to try other donuts and main dishes! read more

This was a nice walk from the neighborhood and is a fun retro diner with a modern twist. They had an interesting menu with a good mix of classics and fun items. I enjoyed the nachos and added pulled pork. It was a hearty portion with a good amount of all the toppings, so every chip had something with it. Easily could have shared. Same with the s'mores milkshake. It's a huge portion where they bring out the extra that didn't fit in the glass. The s'mores flavor was a great choice and had the graham cracker mixed in with it. I love a good diner... especially an authentic diner with deep rooted history in an area! This passion of mine is what brought my family and I to the Hi-Lo. The interior is clean and well maintained. Some of the booths have some wear in the seats, but overall this place silently screams RETRO DINER, complete with stools at the counter! Service was delivered quickly and with a smile. Service check ins were frequent enough to satisfy, so we never felt ignored or bothered. Overall the food was delicious. My wife had the huevos rancheros, I had the Tennessee Hot chicken sandwich, our kiddo had Mac & cheese, and we split a butterscotch shake and a donut for desert. The chicken sandwich had one of the lightest yet crispiest batters I've ever had. Personally, I thought the Tennessee Hot was more of a Tennessee "Mild" - however, I like really hot food so my natural expectations are high for spice. The flavor was delicious...and I'm tempted to say this was probably the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. The huevos rancheros were delicious as well. The diner's presentation comes with a crispier corn tortilla than a traditional preparation, however it ads some texture to each delicious bite. The butterscotch shake was super yummy - not overly sweet but still rich with that signature buttery flavor. Their signature donut blew me away. It was swerved warm with a fresh coat of glaze and every bite was OMG amazing. If you like old fashioned shakes or drool at donuts like Homer Simpson, the Hi-Lo will make you a happy customer. Also- they have signature cocktails and beers on tap!! One suggestion for improvement would be the addition of more entrees. While the food was great and they had something for everyone in our small party, the entree selections felt limited. I'm not sure if they have daily specials here...I don't recall seeing a sign and our server did not mention anything. Meh. The price is high and the quality of the food doesn't match the price. I ordered a variation of Eggs Benedict. The meal normally had capers in it, which I don't like. Unfortunately the meal needed to capers for flavor. I've had a lot of hollandaise sauce in my time and it normally has a good flavor. This sauce was bland to the point of having no flavor. The other issue was the temperature in the building. It was about 100F outside and inside was around 85F. For my health issue, POTS, that was a big problem. read more

We went on a Saturday at about 1030 and it was about a 45 minute wait, you give your phone number and they text when your table is ready, so we ended up going across the street to Dogwood while we waited for our table. Parking was not hard to find, we parked on the street but realized there was a lot after! The street parking was free where I parked which is definitely a plus. Food: We all split a side of French Toast and i think this had to be my favorite thing I tried there and one of the best French toasts I have had! I ordered the eggs benedict and I am sad to say it was a bit underwhelming for me. They were still pretty good and the eggs were perfectly cooked, but the hollandaise sauce for me was just okay & was really runny/buttery rather than a creamier texture. The hash browns were perfectly cooked! My friends got the Fodero Breakfast & the Breakfast sandwich, the Fodero was a classic breakfast, pretty good! The breakfast sandwich had huge biscuit which was sooo good. I would love to come back and try the Hi-Tops, they look incredible and look like they are HUGE. MAN I love this place!!! I've been meaning to try their brunch FOREVER and finally got around to it a few days ago! Luckily, we came on a day where the weather was just gorgeous so we were able to sit outside and enjoy Hi-Lo's lovely patio. I got their breakfast sandwich on their homemade biscuit with hash browns. I can neverrrrr say no to hash browns. The homemade biscuit was delicious but SO HUGE! I had to take some of it off because I couldn't eat it all. The rest of the sandwich was divine, absolutely delicious. Likewise with the hash browns. To me, a brunch spot is only as good as it's drip coffee and Hi Lo has awesome drip. I think they sell Peace Coffee (sorry if I'm wrong!!!) but I appreciate that they make sure they're providing good drip. I feel like sometimes breakfast spots don't think enough about their drip...or maybe I'm just a coffee snob... Aside from having an adorable patio, Hi-Lo also has such a cute inside restaurant. What a fun little spot! We had heard about this place but our first time visiting did not disappoint. There are no reservations so it's first come first serve. The inside is a tiny little retro well diner. Counter seating and little booths make it so fun! It took 20 minutes to get seated on a Sunday at 12:30 PM for two. The service was always super friendly and relatively fast considering how busy they were. The donut was made to order and oozing with goodness. It was pretty fluffy so you ended up with a pretty breast consistency. My husband and I both devoured our entrées and we appreciated that the portions weren't completely overwhelming. The parking lot is tiny and street parking in the area gets pretty filled. I walked a couple blocks. I've tried the donut breakfast and a few other things in the past. This time I got the Lox & Dam Benedict - Smoked salmon, English muffin, poached eggs, red onion, capers, hollandaise. You can do mixed greens, or hash browns. I love a good smoked salmon benny and this one just mid. It was actually pretty bland. Hash Browns could be crispier all the way through, but the top was. I also had a Grapefruit Mimosa which was the highlight of the meal. It was refreshing and bubbly. I am sure I will end up returning in another year or so as I have. The first time I drove by this place, I had to bookmark it. It is the cutest little retro diner! Their storefront looks as 50's as you can get in 2021. For food, their signature dishes are their Hi-Tops! A plate full of savory and sweet combos on top of a classic donut. Their most popular one is the Gary Cooper ($13.5). I decided to get the Notorious P.I.G ($13.5) since I don't really like sweet and savory foods. At first bite it is delicious, but after a few more bites I just felt sick. It was very heavy and dense for me, however, I just think I ordered the wrong dish. The rest of the brunch menu sounded delicious! I definitely want to go back another time to try something else. A random tiktok video brought us here. After looking through photos the dish that actually brought me to this place is Gary Cooper! This is a small diner with a traditional diner interior design. We came around 2pm so it was pretty empty, maybe 1-2 other tables there. They serve brunch so a lot of options. Classic Egg Benedict - this is always a safe choice. You can choose a side of hash brown or veggies and of course we got hash brown. It was good. Although, I wish the hash was a little crispier but overall not bad. It did not come out hot so it was a little disappointing. 3/5 Hash Stuffed Hash- comes with 1 toast, 2 sunny eggs and hash with corn beef. The corn beef were in pork cubes style. It was an ok dish. Again, not hot when it came out. 3/5 Gary Cooper- the dish that made us go here! Got to say, it was delicious! This dish is worth our trip here. I would say this is another version of traditional chicken and waffle. Donut was sweet and yum. The chicken was crispy and the gravy on top really complicated everything. It was SO good! If I come back would definitely get this dish again and maybe try other things. 4.5/5 Besides the Gary Cooper, everything else was alright nothing special. I think the food was a little cold because they came out at the same time. Maybe next time just bring out what is done already so it's hot or at least warm.
