We came to this small but charming restaurant for dinner with friends. The menu is fairly large. We ordered the Khachapuri as an appetizer which was huge and tasty but a little too doughy. For main courses, we had the lamb pilaf which can be shared by two people, and the pelmeni (Russian meat dumplings) which was served with sour cream. Both dishes were delicious. For dessert we had ricotta cheese pancakes which was served with sour cream and jam, and Napoleon cake which was enormous and delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. start- we wanted so Something different and this restaurant delivered; as soon as you enter, you are transported to Uzbekistan.The inside is beautiful and the food is wonderful - portions are huge. We started with Georgian wine and khachapuri- Bread with cheese and egg(great). My lamb kabob with pickled onions and stewed cabbage was huge and I shared some with others. Popped in for our first visit for lunch. Had the place to ourselves. Seems crazy as the food and ambiance are both excellent. So was our service but considering the small kitchen and single server, I wonder how a full dinner service would play out. This is so different from most local fare - and the kabobs look awesome for our next visit. We tried several dishes - two starters and two mains. The beef in the starter and main were similarly so I suggest you mix up beef, lamb and chicken to get a full range of flavors. We got a business lunch special that is a pre fixed menu. This include a course soup that we choose is Borscht. Which is vegetables soup in tomatoes base. The sons course is main Dish pilaf. The lamb meat rice. This is their signature dish. The third dish is salad Achichuk - lettuce salad. The fourth is a drink. We have the tea. We also order a signature dish of chicken Tabaka. Highly recommend I felt like we were in someone's home with nice dishes and glassware and cozy environment. Food was fantastic. More like homemade than standard restaurant fare. My boyfriend was cautious about trying something new but was always ready planning our return with lists of friends who would love this place. We shared Samsa which was crispy and well stuffed with meat filling. I had Pellmeni as I am a dumpling girl. We both loved the dumplings and the rich herby broth. My gf and I grew up on this food so it was incredible nostalgic for us. If you aren't familiar with this cuisine... give it a try.. seriously.. walk in and ask them to serve you the same thing they would if they were hosting their family - they will understand, and you will NOT be disappointed. If you dont feel comfortable with doing that... order the same thing as I did.. if you dont like that then you should just stay home and eat a bologna sandwich. As soon as you enter the restaurant you feel as though you've crossed a gateway transporting you from a strip mall to a gathering place in Uzbekistan. What we ordered: - Borscht (10/10): Freshly homemade beet soup. It will warm your soul even on a hot Sarasota day. The flavors so perfectly compliment each other and the use of sour cream (traditional, and recommended) cools down each bite as it takes you down a slide of happiness. - Khatchapuri (10/10): The particular one we got was on special, and although traditionally a Georgian dish, it was cooked with perfection. The warm, soft, cheese filled bread melts in your mouth as the sweetness from the cracked egg yolk penetrates your taste buds. - Vareniki with Potatoes (8/10): These fried small dough puff pastries filled with the most delectable mashed potatoes were a fan favorite for my gf. I very much enjoyed them as well but I felt they were more filling than mind blowing.. as compared to the rest of the dish anyway. - Manti (10/10): Traditional dough boiled to perfection with fresh lamb on the inside. Although these seem like nothing special, the art to create them allowing the eater to enjoy without them falling apart is such an accomplishment. The flavors were perfect, plenty of meat inside - must enjoy with a scoop of sour cream. - Lamb shashlik (10/10): Lamb seasoned to perfection, skewered, and grilled to a perfect medium on the inside with a crispy outside taste. The onions.. oof dont get me started - so perfectly marinated in vinegar that the bite of the onion flavor is gone but the crunch is still there. French fries are french fries but these were great as well. We are only in Florida for a couple of weeks but we will definitely be back here in a week or so to try the rest of the deliciousness. read more

The food was very fresh, cooked to order . We tried tomato salad , plov with lamb , mantu , shish-kabobs, puff dough with cheese inside , and napoleon. And I can't decide which dish was our favorite, because everything tasted so amazing. My kids loved the puff dough stuffed with cheese the most , my husband loved the uzbeki plov with tomato salad. Great experience today at Vostok! Inside the restaurant the decor is beautiful! Bright, colorful and a relaxing space. Very clean as well. I arrived with a larger party today and the staff was very accommodating and kind! Note: they do not have a kids menu but the staff did recommend a chicken dish and fries for the kids to share and it was amazing! Large portions and served family style (my fave). We tried the pickled herring, khachapuri, and potato pancakes as our appetizers. All were gorgeous on the plate and yummy! Khachapuri was so soft and cheesy, yet crispy on the outside! Perfect :) Our mains included another chicken dish, lamb pilaf, and manty. The chicken was crispy + next level. The lamb pilaf was delicious and the manty were HUGE! Served with sour cream for the best bite. The best part, of course, was the desserts. We enjoyed the honey cake, Napoleon cake, and little ricotta cakes served with jam and cream. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because we went on a Friday at 5pm and there was only one server. I hate to do this, but after waiting for weeks for any response from management, I feel it necessary to share for the sake of other patrons' safety. Full disclosure: we've eaten here before without issues, and enjoyed the food quite a bit, albeit with obvious service caveats given the limited staff. On this day, things took a turn. The place was nearly full, leaving the lonely server/hostess running ragged from table to table and struggling to keep up. We got our order in, including my Chicken Kiev. The food started arriving haphazardly, just as it was getting turned out by the kitchen. Some at our table were watching their main course going cold while others only had appetizers. No less than 20 mins passed between the first main dish and the last one showing up on our plates. When I finally got my chicken, it came seemingly overcooked, the crust hard and brownish, nearly burned. I cut it, expecting to find dry chicken, but to my surprise the end piece looked fine. The first bite seemed ok, but as I chewed I realized there was something amiss. The next bite went the same way. As I looked on my plate, I saw a puddle of raw chicken juice pooling around. The interior of the piece was completely raw! I cut the piece in half while spitting out whatever was in my mouth, gagging the entire time. Sure enough, the inside layer of meat was totally raw, cold, and frozen. The server's ideas about "fixing it" involved "cooking it some more", "getting another portion of the same dish", or "ordering something else". Since we didn't trust the kitchen to do a better job next time, and everyone else at our table had long finished their meals, none of these suggestions worked for us. We asked if the chicken was pre-made and frozen, only to be assured that it wasn't. A trip to the kitchen confirmed that it had in fact been frozen and deep-fried directly from the freezer - a big no-no! We sent the chicken back and asked the server to make this right. Sure enough, when the check came the chicken was still on it. No comps, no attempts to salvage the experience, nothing. My wife tried to reason with the server, but the only answer received was "the owner isn't here and I can't get him on the phone to authorize me to comp anything." Fighting through the nausea I paid the check just to get out of there. Next day we called the owner and left a voicemail to let him know what happened. No callback, no response, nothing. We tried our best to explain that incorrect cooking practices aren't synonymous with an "off night" at the kitchen. Guess that didn't make sense. Hopefully this review makes it more clear. Not saying "stay away", but maybe stay away from the Chicken Kiev if you choose to visit. The rest of the menu leaves less room for error and does offer some tasty options, albeit at a premium price for the area. read more

Had absolutely delicious takeout from here the other night--we ordered lamb shashlik, pelmeni (beef) and manty (lamb) dumplings, lamb pilaf, samsa bread, and borscht. The dumplings were exquisite, with fresh and tender dough and flavorful fillings--the lamb's spicing was particularly tasty--and the shashlik was perfectly cooked. The bread was flaky, prettily decorated, and filled with a very similar lamb mixture to the manty--super delicious. The only underwhelming item was the borscht, which wasn't bad but seemed overpriced for what it delivered. We plan to eventually make our way through the whole menu, including the salads--the raw shredded carrot salad that accompanied the shashlik was very promising! read more

We started with khachapuri at our server's recommendation: fab! A puffy dough filled with cheeses. Would definitely order again. I had a dish of perogis filled with potatoes. My husband had chicken shashlik which was beautifully spiced. It came with vegetables and marinated onions. For dessert we split a napoleon. All portions are pretty generous!
