Walked in on a Friday night 6:35 pm & no one was in the restaurant so immediately it gave us a strange vibe. Interiour was very casual. During the course of the night, they got 1 other table & a few take out orders. There were 2 people working the restaurant - the owner who was cooking & a kid who doubled as a waiter & dishwasher. Food was very good - tabouleh, homemade pita, tender falafel & the beef cube skewer. The chicken skewer was dry. They only offer 2 desserts &b were out of baklava on a Friday night! They gave us free turkish coffee. Bathrooms were hideous - men's room toilet didn't flush & the women's room toilet had the handle dangling from it. We lived in Brooklyn Heights just blocks away from "Mediterranean Mecca" Atlantic Avenue in the 70's and fell deeply in love with all Mediterranean Cuisines. Sahadi Trading, the largest importer of Middle Eastern ingredients is still there on Atlantic Ave. This was our first visit to Zenobia, a lovely thoughtfully designed restaurant. My four stars is a ' beginning' rating. The ingredients are all top notch, fresh, good serving sizes, a good $$ value :: portion size, and more subtly delicately seasoned than Lebanese Mediterranean foods. The waiter explained the seasoning etc is also made with a Turkish influence and he gave me a small container of a more delicate melding of spices. We started with our favorite appetizer babaganouch made of roasted eggplant tahini sauce and here, a touch of yogurt. At Zenobia they call it moutabbal .This is eaten with small triangles of fresh home made pita bread. Yum! Light smooth perfect with all Mediterranean foods! This was a Five star. Then we ordered the Gyro Shawarma beef sandwich and the Kafka sandwich accompanied by a generous serving of my beloved tahini sauce. Both arrived nice and hot. Added a bit of moutabbal as well - - very delicious! $10.99 and $11.99. Next visit I shall order the home made lentil soup and their 6 piece falafel ( wonderous fried balls of ground chic peas/ onion/ wheat/ matzoh/spices that you dip in various sauces). Never got food. I placed an order through GrubHub for me to pick up. I arrived in the parking lot and waited 30 minutes. The sign on the door says they open at 11:30 but there was another sign that said they didn't open till noon. I stood outside until 10 minutes after 12:00 trying and the door was locked. I got in my car and called the phone number for the restaurant and it said that nobody could answer at this time. So I left a message saying that I had an order to pick up. There was another lady waiting to go in, outside with me. I finally ended up calling GrubHub and canceling my order. We were driving to Sarasota and were looking for a light lunch. We searched for Mediterranean restaurants and found Zenobia. It did not disappoint. We enjoyed the Zenobia Trio and a Greek salad. The portions were perfect for 2. The hummus was creatively presented. The baba ghannouj was textured w/red bell pepper and other chopped veggies. The Greek salad was lovely w/the freshest greens, cucumbers, black olives & feta cheese. We were so excited to dive in we forgot to take photos. OK, my wife is Arabic, so I know good Middle Eastern food. It's a small, eight table joint in a strip mall, which I don't mind at all. The owner/chefs here are Syrian, so I expected a good meal. The choices with entrees are lentil soup or cucumber with yogurt. We chose the soup, which was flat. A few sauteed onions or carrots would have added a lot here. My wife order Chicken Shawarma, ($20) which didn't have a lot of meat or seasoning. The accompanying rice was the best thing we had. I ordered a plate with skewers of chicken and beef kafta. The chicken was nicely caramelized and not too dry. The beef was overcooked, dry and actually hard. When we told the server, they offered to replace it with a 25 minute wait, which I declined. No one came to the table or offered us something else (dessert?) until we paid and left and the chef followed me into the parking lot. read more

We went yesterday with my husband because I really like kebabs and basmati rice. After reading the reviews and looking at the pictures, I couldn't wait. Well, I guess we weren't lucky because it was nothing like the pictures. The bread was old and hard, the rice didn't look or taste fresh either and for salad they served us a few pieces of lettuce (not fresh) with a few slices of onion. I had such high hopes for my meal based in the 'Yelp' ratings here but left sooo disappointed! Our server came over immediately and was very cordial and friendly. We ordered meals that came with a either Lentil soup or a cucumber salad. We chose the Lentil soup, which was served warm at best, not hot in ANY way. The soup was also very thin and was not very flavorful, in fact, we all had to add black pepper. None of us had more than a few spoonfuls of soup. We ordered an appetizer of falafel that were extremely hot and had to have JUST came out of the fryer but was very overcooked as the outside of them were VERY dark and really hard. The insides were tasty though. Our meals were 1 Chicken Shawarma $16.99 dinner , 1 Beef Shawarma $17.99 dinner and 1 Arayess 15.99 dinner. The Shawarma dinners were completely not what I expected! The meats did not have the expected look of being shaved off a huge "cone". In fact, they were ground and rolled in a small tortilla and was the size of a 5"burrito, sooooo disappointing, especially its size, a complete rip off, NO value at all. The Arayess dinner was basically 2 flour tortillas with a thin Kafka stuffing, their version of a quesadilla. Again, NOT worth the price, not a great value. We all left hungry! I should have seen the warning when we walked in. They actually use a microwave in their 'open kitchen' and it sits on top of the kitchen counter with its back to the dining room guests. Sorry, a microwave does not belong in a kitchen, let alone in front of the guests. I'm glad that so many people have dined there and gave great ratings because they enjoyed their meals, but as someone in the restaurant business, I definitely had higher expectations than what I experienced and with out a doubt, will never go back. read more
