As an espresso fan, I make a daily espresso. Chazzano does a wonderful job roasting their coffees. The bean selections they use are varied and top quality. I've been trying different coffees and have found that while there are some that I like better than others, all have produced a superior espresso. The staff is very helpful and enjoy giving recommendations and discussing different coffees. Plus they are REALLY nice people. Well worth picking up a bag! read more

This is a non hipster, no nonsense type coffee shop. They're not serving weird artisanal concoctions. It's straight up delicious coffee. I got a French press and I sat down to do some work and it was brought to me. If you check in, you get 10% off of 1lb of coffee beans to go, ground or whole bean. I got some coffee to go and I've been grinding it up at home and brewing it. It's honestly such smooth and delicious coffee. The folks here are so sweet and so willing to help you pick something out. The new location is really nice. I love the natural light and open space. I had a yummy Turkish coffee which was a great recommendation by the delightful crew! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I'm so excited to have Chazzano here in Berkley. The staff is friendly, the location is prime, and you can customize your bean for your coffee drinks, which is fun. The ONLY thing I can't figure out is their hours, 10-4pm Monday-Friday. I know these were the hours at their old location but I HATE to see businesses lose money. Being so close to Beaumont, the hospital staff NEEDS their coffee and why not keep it out of the hands of big named coffee shops? I know I personally like to drink my coffee way before 10am. Just my observation. Still won't affect my decision to go when I can within these hours! Not a lot of seating in the new location. Maybe 4 two-seater high top tables and that's it. read more

This shop has the greatest variety of obscure and rare coffee beans sourced from small farms. Imagine drinking a large pour over for under $5 or even $4 made with beans that cost over $30 or even $45 a pound. Or a reasonably priced, perfectly pulled double espresso for under $4 made with the same expensive beans. I only spent a month in the Detroit area recently, but managed to visit at least 20 times. Once you try Chazzano, you will reluctant to go anywhere else and you will wish their hours were far more accommodating. read more

I've been a fan since they were in Ferndale, but let's be honest. Everyone loves Frank, the single source beans, the passion and knowledge for the employees, etc. The old place was a tight squeeze, more wholesale /retail place, where you could catch an expert cup and feel special you made it out of your way. Then I had kids and had no time for that. Then they moved to closer, to tiny downtown Berkley, a little more parking, a bigger space to grab that coffee, a walk up window, and a cooler bathroom than most people deserve. They make the dark nectar fit for the gods - coffee. This is the kind of coffee you drink straight, with no coffee or cream.

The espresso I had here was quite good. Nicely balanced and rich flavor. Unfortunately the beans I bought to take home were not that great - barely passable to terrible. This place leans towards darker roasts which is not what most people are looking for in specialty coffee, so be mindful of that. I can enjoy a medium to medium dark roast just fine, but something is off with the beans here, or at least the ones I had. FWIW they looked a bit unevenly roasted with some burnt beans mixed in and had a very smoky/tobacco type scent. One bag was very "earthy" tasting which isn't my thing at all. Yuck. Maybe their beans and roast level work well for espresso machines but I had little success making good coffee using a pourover method or French press with these beans. Not much interesting flavor, mainly "roast". As such I will avoid their coffee in the future. To be blunt, there are so many roasters in the broader metro area, across the U.S., Canada, and beyond that are selling much better beans with way better flavor. This place isn't really worth bothering with IMHO. read more

I feel like a jerk for saying this, but I did not want to love this place because the hours are so inconvenient. But at the urging of a friend, I tried a pourover one day. That is always the true test of a coffee shop. It was top tier. Having recently moved from the other side of the state, I was in search of a new go-to local roaster because I usually make coffee at home (pourover on weekday mornings, espresso in the afternoon and French pressed on weekends). Chazzano is an easy walk from my house. I'm fortunate to work from home so the inconvenient hours force me to take a midday walk when it's time for another pound of beans. In the end, this is excellent way to get some functional fitness, be sustainable and build a little bit of movement and self-care into my workday. Chazzano's amazing coffee has won me over! The beans are roasted fresh, with care and personal attention. This week I bought a pound of beans roasted that very day. The beans were still warm! The prices are what you would expect for top-quality beans (typically ranging from $18-24/pound). In my opinion, the prices are fair and reasonable for the quality. This is the source for the true coffee lovers. It isn't a hang out spot to hold your meeting or be seen. If you want to have the best cup of coffee you've ever made at home, you must get the beans from Chazzano. read more

Chazzano made me love black coffee. My first ever cup of coffee was half creamer, half coffee, and a bunch of sugar (at five years old) and I've loved it that way ever since. Thanks, Aunt Lisa! When I started camping more, highly accessorized coffee was too difficult to manage, but there was always something lacking in plain old black coffee -- until I met Chazzano coffee. I had the privilege of getting my first cup of Chazzano coffee free at a BNI Greater Royal Oak chapter meeting. I also got to meet the owner, Frank, and learn about how he does business. Not only was the black coffee amazing, it was followed up with information about how it is ethically sourced, beautifully and freshly roasted, and sold unpretentiously out of a little shop of 9 Mile in Ferndale. I made a beeline to their shop, and started making it a place to meet with friends, coaches, clients... any reason to show up and try another delicious roast. No food. No coffee frills. I always get a decaf Americano here and it is so good every time!! Sometimes decaf coffee can taste really weak, but theirs is nice and strong. They always add just the right amount of cream when I ask for it. Very affordable, too. read more

Their beans were darkly roasted and the space smelled burnt. My partner's latte had massive sea-foam which may have been slightly more acceptable if he had ordered a cappuccino. He usually drinks vanilla lattes and they didn't have an syrups available. This combined with the dark roasted beans made his drink unbearable to him. While driving around the area and in forever search of a good coffee roaster, we decided to stop in Ferndale, of all places, to grab a coffee, after I saw the reviews of Chazzano. And boy, was I glad we stopped. Chazzano had the best coffee that I've ever had in the Detroit area. They roast their beans and I just happen to be there the day they were roasting their beans. I got a pourover and that was the smoothest- yes, the ever smoothest tasting pourover I've had. It was amazing. So, I was sold and bought a bag of beans too. These people know their coffee and they make their coffee great. I sipped my coffee and chatted with the barista about her growing avocados in their window. First time visiting and I'm impressed. It was a bold flavor that was much different than my normal espresso runs. Could it be that the beans are ground fresh when you order them? Or the method to brewing? Either way I liked it. Pricing is a bit higher ($2.50 for a dbl. shot), but you are getting a really fresh espresso so that's not a deal breaker. I also tried the chamomile tea and it was good with a subtle hint of honey. $4.35 for a cup, but I was told you could steep the tea a couple times. My penny pinching self did steep another cup of tea at work and she was right! My loose tea went a long way today. They have a variety of loose tea to chose from and that is great for a serious tea drinker. Small spot that is serious about the coffee brewing process. Get $10 back in a gift card when you spend $100 over time. Who says drinking coffee doesn't pay? All coffee lovers should try Chazzano Coffee at least once as they have a variety of brewing methods that they use to create the perfect cup of joe. read more

I'm sitting in the corner of Chazzano, a brilliant vantage point from which I can observe the entire room and watch the customers and staff interact. I set foot in here an hour and a half earlier, knowing not what to expect. 5 varieties of coffee later, I can tell you this is THE premier coffee house in the area for true coffee lovers. The selection of coffee is amazing. And by selection I don't mean flavored syrups, of which there are NONE. I mean the selection of beans from various parts of the world, roasted to produce the greatest aromas and flavors for any particular bean. Owner Frank has been roasting his own coffee for 19 years - this man lives and breathes coffee. He's a fount of knowledge and has no hesitations to share. He proudly gives tours of his facility to all who ask and will help train even the most unfamiliar coffee novice in the vocabulary and variety of the coffee world. Similarly, His Barrista staff are well versed in the products and preparation methods. Everyone is as attentive and patient with only two customers as they are with a full house. I stopped in for a cup of coffee to get the scoop on this place. I walked in the door and was immediately greeted by Julie, the barista, who was full of info about the coffees they had available, how they were brewed and roasted etc. She was very energetic and inviting as was the atmosphere. Clean, crisp and no kitchy gimmicky crap to buy-just all coffee all the time. On top of that, she put on some Zeppelin while I waited which sealed in the five stars. I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner and roaster, Frank, who has carved out a nice little niche business in Ferndale. I sat down and Julie prepared me a personal french press with her choice of beans (as I don't pretend to be any kind of coffee connoisseur and had no idea what to order besides "coffee"). The coffee was great! I enjoy the french pressed coffees at home so it was nice to stop in and get my own two cup press. I'm looking forward to going back for the Turkish coffee and some of the other drip styled coffees that use the interesting contraptions that I'm not accustomed to. Lastly, it sounds like they ship their coffee for free, wherever and in whatever volume you may like which is impressive Besides all that it was nice to get away from anything resembling a Starbucks. Chazzano serves good coffee. I was however a little taken back when we walked in there wasn't a menu or anything. I wanted to see some options regarding what was available and especially the prices. The woman behind the counter asked us what we wanted like we should know already. She wasn't the most helpful in putting my doubts to rest. We told her we wanted coffee and she presented us with a french press of coffee. The coffee was hot and had a great flavor. It was under $5 for the whole thing, and I was very pleased. The atmosphere was nice and relaxing. The location was easy to find but not in the most convenient area of town. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable coming here just to read or hang out with a cup of coffee like I would other coffee shops. I think a lot of it is because it's a different place and it doesn't seem to operated by the same rules as other coffeeshops. Because of that I don't feel totally comfortable here. I needed a spot to hang for a few hours - life on the road... What a gem! I am not a coffee buff. I like it, but I am not crazy like some people. No joke, best coffee I have had. Ever. In my life. I got a french press 4 cup for $7 - little rich but worth every drop. Next time I'll do the pour-over. I think that is coffee fancy-speak for like normal coffee not in a press. They roast the beans right here, which you'll know if you read other reviews. There are lots of plugs about so you can work, and they bring water to your table. Between customers they are sticking labels on bags, making cold brew stuff to sell somewhere (?) and taking orders from local shops who must sell the brew. I'll be back, I love it. read more
