Chazzano's was recommended to me by a few people, and I've been in a couple of times for a beverage. It's ok-- really not bad. Some time after that, I tweeted at these guys, casually lamenting the fact that most of their coffee beans are outrageously expensive, and the dude trolled me from three separate accounts about how I was basically an idiot. Then I see pictures they post of hanging out at a Trump's resort. This is my go-to coffee spot for roasted coffee. Be on the lookout for discounts through yelp for beans. Their coffee bean menu is extensive, and the baristas are always friendly and can offer up great suggestions. For newbies - you pay at the end, which is different than most coffee shops. I think they are trying to encourage you to stay and sip on your coffee in house. I've always wanted to try the siphon brewer, but haven't gotten around to ordering it yet. read more

Having grown up in Michigan and moved away with relatives still there, the Brave New World of Detroit and surrounding areas is interesting to see when coming back to the area. Number one son who just moved to the area for business took me here and I'm glad he did. The shop is a great caffeine mecca. The owner and roaster know their stuff. When one sees the pock marks littering the landscape in the city center, it's refreshing to see an industrious optimistic owner setting out with a great product and energy. I try not to gush TOO much about places I visit but I can't say enough good things about the product that comes out of Chazzano. Smooth and not bitter, creative offerings, even some revolutionary liquids (try "Fruit of the Bean"). However, the product is eclipsed by the care, devotion, and sheer enthusiasm of the beverage professionals here at Chazzano. It's rare to find this combination of passion, deep knowledge, and willingness to spread the good coffee and tea vibes with the world. In the car, the cups spilled all over me and I suffered from severe burns. I had to miss work, go to urgent care and was in sever pain for days. When I called, the manager answered and after informing him of the severity of the situation, he told me they BREW THEIR COFFEE AT 205 degrees. He said "I understand how hard that is, I still have nerve damage from brewing coffee here." ...long story short I recommend this place to any coffee person because it's The strongest coffee I've ever had. While I love the coffee at this place, it is not for everyone. It is very intense...you pick the region, brew method, etc. so if you are just an average coffee drinker (like myself) you will need to ask a lot of questions, but they are accommodating in helping you find something you like. With that said, I have brought a few people here who did not like what they ordered, so don't be afraid to ask questions. I like that they store your information in a database so if you don't remember what you had last time (I never do) they can look it up for you to make it again or help you find something similar. "Coffee snobs rejoice!" Is a more than accurate description. I passed by this coffee place multiple times & decided to stop in this morning after a night with friends & not enough sleep. Stumbling in, & murmuring "medium coffee, please," I was met with a lot of different coffee beans from around the planet. The knowledgeable barista pointed me towards her fav coffee & I immediately ordered a 16 oz. the coffee was smooth, yummy & done fresh pour over style. This place won't disappoint the coffee snobs but if you've got the Monday sleepiness, save it for another time. This place is worth more than 3 stars for quality but I wanted something more than your regular gas station brew without the pretentiousness of "we don't add flavors" in the morning. read more

Chazzano is a very unique coffee shop in these parts. They roast their own beans in the shop, which is excellent! However, the cost for beans is expensive due to the high quality. I would totally buy them, but spending $12+ on a pound of coffee is out of our realm of reality. They have cold brew on tap, which has been popping up more and more around here, but they were the first. I think the variety they provide is amazing. Eh, bunch of coffee snobs. I stopped in, all excited to have a new place by my house to get my biweekly fix (indulgence). As soon as I uttered the words "Iced vanilla latte" I was greeted with a mirage of sneers. The staff, almost simultaneously, quipped that they didn't have syrups. As if "oh, she's one of THOSE people." Yes, yes I am. I do not drink drip coffee and I do not drink my lattes without a little bit of flavoring. That's that. I see that this is not my place. I don't appreciate the taste or complexity of roasts and I have no interest in choking them down. I know that's not their problem, but t it IS their problem that their staff has such a sense of superiority and rudeness about them. I got to listen to them drone on and on about their specialties and how I really owe it to myself to try a good cup of coffee (because according to them, I clearly don't enjoy coffee because I have never had a perfectly prepared roast, not because I JUST DON'T LIKE IT). I tried to cut in and tell them that they weren't the only ones who knew a thing or two about roasts (I managed numerous coffee shops for years), yet they didn't give me the opportunity to speak. Alright people of Detroit, finally a "real" coffee shop! But a three star rating? I finally find a place that I consider a real shop and I give it three stars? Let me explain. First of all, I call this a real cafe because they actually ROAST coffee. They don't mail order it from some beast company two thousand miles away. If I'm not mistaken, this is the only coffee shop in the Detroit area that does this (I don't consider Ypsi part of Detroit). You've got 5 stars from me if I can smell the coffee being roasted when I get out of my car. You've really gotta screw some stuff up after that to lose points... On to that. The owner (Frank) is a nice guy. A writer a couple of posts below complained that he was a little too nosy with her about her occupation. I don't doubt that. He's pushy; he's from New York, and not just 'state'. He also believes in the art of coffee. He's a fanatic, almost to a fault. I find this endearing, but he also needs to find people to work for him that are as fanatical about the coffee he makes. Wearing Urban Outfitter threads and having hebrew tattoos everywhere on your body doesn't make you any more knowledgeable about anything in particular; save for maybe Hep B treatments. I asked one of his younger baristas what her favorite coffee was on their infamous blackboard, and she proudly stated: "Guatemala because it has that roasted coffee flavor". Uhh...it better honey. Real tough to grind unroasted coffee. As far as the coffee goes, it's good. Not great by any stretch of the imagination, but at least it's fresh. Frank errs on the dark side, which tends to take away from a coffee's distinct origin flavors. In other words, the more you roast, the less you can taste where a coffee comes from. He only makes coffee in french press and vac pot (or "siphon" as his baristas insist it be called). He also has an espresso machine that his workers have no idea how to use so I'd suggest you skip straight shots altogether. In all, this is an acceptable place to get coffee, as long as you don't spend too much time around the actual shop. I have resorted to buying a pound of coffee and making it at home. It saves me the headache of talking with pseudo coffee snobs that give coffee a bad name. Hate to say it, but the search is still on in Detroit for an all around quality place to get coffee. Ugly Mug in Ypsi and Comet in Ann Arbor are all we have right now. read more

Chazzano has found a missing niche market in Detroit. This is the only place that I know of in the Metro area that I can get coffee as it's meant to be tasted- black nothing added. All coffee is roasted in house. Fresh! You pick a bean flavor and it is served either in a French Press or a Siphon. Although, Frank (the owner) will make you a cappuccino or a latte if you ask, the stress at Chazzano is on the beans and the uniqueness of their flavors. This coffee is far from the mass produced likes of Starbucks. It's not masked by heavy cream or caramel or whipped cream. Frank believes great coffee doesn't need those things because the flavor itself is enough on its own. Don't get me wrong, those all great things. But when you taste truly exceptional coffee as Chazzano has, there is no need for sugar let alone cream or any other "coffee toppings." This is purist coffee. Like I said, they do have latte's and cappuccinos, but if there was ever a time to make an exception from your normal coffee choice, it would be when tasting the exceptional likes of Chazzano coffee. The atmosphere is very cozy. Each table has a flavor chart, explaining the different notes that good and badly roasted coffees can bring out in the flavor. Instead of just treating coffee as a caffeine injection, as I normally do, this time I took the time to really taste what was there. And man was it GOOD! When I began to taste the coffee both warm and as it cooled, the flavors changed dramatically. I had never analyzed coffee so closely ever in my life. Frank had mentioned a blueberry aroma, sure enough, I took a sniff and there it was- blueberry scent fresh as if I'd just picked them from a bush. It felt like a wine tasting. I got the Ethiopia Harrar based off of Frank's request. He lets us taste and talk and comes back and tells us that the flavor should now taste more sweet. He then offered a tour and we gladly obliged. For the first time in my life, I got to see coffee beans before they are roasted, all the way through to the roasting process. We stood by as Frank educated us as he roasted the expensive Kona beans. We watched the beans go in the roaster. We watched through the little bean window as they grew hotter and darker in color, we heard as they reached their "cracking" phase which sounded like popcorn popping. He'd periodically take the beans out and we could smell the progression as they were roasted and how that affected the aroma. It was so refreshing and inspiring to learn from a man who has such a true passion for what he does. It was fascinating to say the least and I began to wonder how I'd never taken time to notice coffee ever before in this light. He explains how delicate each type of bean is, they can be roasted only a few different ways, for different amounts of time at different temperatures. He told us of how this cafe was once a pipe dream and how he has been taking notes for 10 or so years...meticulous notes. This man is serious about his coffee. I foresee great things happening for Chazzano. I know I will be going back and I will make it my mission to be sure everyone tries this truly exceptional approach to coffee. read more

This place is amazing. They roast all of the coffee fresh in store and brew it to perfection. You're not going to find any mocha-chai-skinny-frappa-iced-chino's here. :) It's all about pure, fresh coffee and the vast array of flavors within. They have latte's and cappuccino's. There's no drip coffee it's all french press or this Japanese (I think) brew method that allows for a very clean cup of coffee. They also offer a few varieties of fair trade organic coffee's. The owner Jim is a very nice guy who has an obvious passion for coffee and his customers. The offer a frequent buyer card, free wi-fi and a really unique and comfortable atmosphere for hanging out. There's no food and they aren't open during the day on Saturday. Saturday night though is board game night. :) read more

Banker's hours? Really? How inconvenient... Question to the employee: "Can you explain the (a special on checkboard)?" Answer: "It's a secret blend." Wow... how completely unhelpful. Next Question: "Can you describe (the house blend)?" Answer: "It's Frank's secret blend." Wow... a secret again? Useless... Last Question: "Can you describe (a particular espresso)?" Answer: "It's good... It's interesting." That tells me... nothing! Awesome. The soy latte was okay, and priced very reasonably, but I was so incredibly turned off by my experience here. The staff was not unfriendly, but they were passive aggressively "better-than-thou" and unusually self-centered in casual conversation. I don't know you, so I likely don't need to know the nuances of your life while you make my drink. I'd rather drive to Ann Arbor for coffee than put myself through this experience again. read more

I applaud Chazzano Coffee for doing things outside of the box. Their location is out of the mainstream of Ferndale, down 9 Mile towards Hazel Park and all of their coffee is French press or made with this science experiment equipment (I think it was a siphon? but it looks like it should be in a laboratory with dry-ice) device though they do have the means of fixin' a cappuccino or latté. Ryan L. and I finally found time to get to Chazzano's after reading and hearing so much about their excellence. I feel I can add my amen to the chorus saying Chazzono is doing something right/different/better? I was a little puzzled by the lack of a menu board--I like to see my options as to then be indecisive about my options. The barista did greet us with a list of questions like, "Do you want bold or mild? Dark or light?" which was almost puzzling because I don't think I put too much thought into the coffee I consume. She eventually asked what I drink at home and I had to guiltily admit that it's whatever strikes my whim when I'm at Trader Joe's. I didn't want to tell her that when I make a decision on coffee sometimes the attractiveness of the packaging is a consideration (I can't help it if I like the little lamas on the canister). We had a seat and within a few minutes a French press of coffee was presented to us. I think we each had a bout two cups from it which was more than enough, and it came to under $5.00, again, not so shabby. While we were seated there, two other groups of people came in for a cup of Chazzano Joe and another lady for a bag of beans. I think she was also a little overwhelmed by the options. The coffee was darn good. Sometimes French press coffee can be seedy or weird and this was delicious. I almost want to say it tasted cleaner than normal coffee. Maybe it's because I usually drink two almost novelty sized large cups of coffee at work and we generally brew Kroger's finest. The inside of the coffee house is more industrial than not. The walls are a warm grey color and it's accented with red and stainless steel. Seating is limited but it I can't think of a coffee house you normally can walk into without there being people everywhere. I don't know if I'd want to hang out inside for hours or if it would be even possible to curl up with a good book, but that's what homes are for, right? While we were there the owner was getting coffee together for a meeting or charity thing he was donating to, which I thought was really nice. We ended up having to ask what the coffee was that we were drinking and I think it was Kenya AA or Kenyaaa as I would like to think of it. I wish they had a coffee flight with lots of little French presses because I would be curious to taste the different blends of beans. Maybe we need to have a UYE here and have everyone order a pot of something that way we can taste the full gamut of flavors? I bet they would be DWI. Can I use DWI? I like what they're doing with the coffee roasting and all but I guess I don't understand the space. I had a French press of "something bold" which wasn't all that bold. The best part about the coffee was the little beaker of steamed milk that I given upon request. The place is really cramped and the in house offerings very limited. I asked if they had plans to expand and I was told no. When I mentioned that a lot of people don't know where they're located since it's off the beaten path, I was told, that's the way we like it. Uh okay. While the coffee is lovely I just wish we had a place like Great Lakes Coffee in Ferndale, sadly we do not. read more

It's amazing stuff, a million miles beyond what you get even at other non-chain coffee shops. A word to the folks who've complained here (and lowered your rating) because there is no food sold at Chazzano. The business is certified Kosher (an external certification that is really serious deal, hard to get and hard to maintain). To maintain the Kosher certification, they cannot allow any meat or meat by-products in the door. None, nada. It would be very complicated to have food or snacks while maintaining the certification. Plus, they don't have a kitchen for food prep and storage. So please accept this place for what it is: a gem that does one thing and one thing only, and does it incredibly well. read more

There is a skit on "Portlandia" where Fred Armisen gets a phone call from a new coffee shop that has opened up and needs a collection of "bad art" to hang on their walls. You've been to those houses, huts and shops with the bad art, bitter coffee, stale scones and "creatives" hanging out. On the other hand, Chazzano is so authentic it could be mistaken for the hipster parodies found on "Portlandia." Stumble into the remote location bordering the Hazel "Industrial" Park and you are confronted with a menu of exotic coffee beans, that if many of us were honest, most never heard of. But, this is a great thing, to expand the horizons. You will find coffee snobs and pretentious trendies pouring some Ethiopian blend from a French press. You will smell fresh roasted beans and hear Bach and Mozart. You have arrived in a coffee heaven that will educate your simpleton existence that believed a Starbucks Frappucino was a legitimate coffee drink and not, as Hal Sparks joked, a milk shake! Does hanging out at Chazzano and sipping artisan beans make you culturally superior to those frequent that the Buck, use a Keurig or, gasp, drink Folgers! On my most recent visit to Chazzano I asked for a Mocha. I was told by Frank, the owner, who seemed a bit startled at my request, that Chazzano doesn't use any "flavors." He offered to make me a latte with beans that would have chocolate notes. The drink was splendid. Telling him what I was in the mood for was much easier than staring at a board of beans and randomly ordering something from Rwanda. Later on, a couple came in and ordered "hot chocolate," to which Frank asked "what flavor?" I was flabbergasted. If you are serving hot chocolate, in what alternate universe could you not make a mocha? I've been to cafes where, instead of using a "flavor" pump or syrup, they shave solid chocolate or cacao in preparing a mocha. Clearly, something was awry. Perhaps I don't know the secret handshake. Or maybe a mocha strays too far form the essence and complexity of the beans. Chazzano's niche is clearly a business model based upon roasting the highest quality of beans and encouraging geek-dom. Whereas Commonwealth in Birmingham is a chic cafe marrying crafty coffee with fine food. It all depends on what you want out of a upscale coffee shop outside of the free WiFi, of course. Chazzano makes great coffee and the cafe itself is a cool hangout spot, but the self-seriousness is hilarious. But the great thing about Chazzano is that they are very courteous to the jackass that tries to order a Frappucino... read more

Do you consider yourself a coffee expert? How about going to a coffee place that is owned by one? This is a coffee shop, probably borderline coffee snob. Ask the owner/barista about what's bold, bitter, smooth, strong, dark, light, imported, or what ever you wish your coffee to be and he'll make that cup for you. If your going staight for a cup, it'll be french press. How about where was the last coffee house you where in where they roasted their own beans? Want to ask about the process, he'll even show and explain it to you. I would give it four stars, but the downside for me is, its only coffee. I mean only coffee, no scones or muffins or cookies or pastries or anything to mask or alter the flavor and experience of your cup of coffee. I would like something that compliments the flavor and I look to the barista for that guidance and vision. Chazzano is all about the coffee, so much so that they forego even selling any sweets or any food, so singular is their dedication to the perfect cup of joe. Now for a place that sells only one thing, the options are multitudinous, when you consider the different beans, roasts and even brewing method. And on top of that, the prices are very reasonable. If you're a coffee lover, you'll just have to visit for yourself. Frank and Lisa, the owners, are very welcoming, their coffee kosher, and their place closed on the Sabbath. Incredible cafe. Within moments of walking in the door, we were greeted by Frank, the owner, and asked what we would like. When we told him it was our first visit, he lit up and suggested a coffee tasting. Four of his exquisite coffees (all roasted in-house!) made their way to our table served in French presses and demi-tasse cups. We could have tried more if we'd had more time. I've been been buying Chazzano Coffee for French Press at home. They also turned me on to Aero Press, which I think is great too. Frank roasts up some great coffee. I try to get something different every time; there are so many varieties. What's fun is that you can sit there and try coffees prepared in different ways: Pour-Over, Vacuum Siphon, French Press, Espresso, Aero Press. One day, I'd like to "Drink for the Cycle," as they call it, which is trying one coffee prepared five different ways. They also do great cold-brew coffee, which my wife and I just love. Chazzano's knowledgeable staff do a great job of educating the customer about the various beans and blends and the different coffee preparation modalities. Also, they can recommend to the customer which beans suit the customer's primary or preferred means of coffee preparation at home. Great stuff. I'm glad Chazzano is around. read more

I go out of my way to pick up their fresh roasted coffee. They can serve coffee prepared in a multitude of ways ranging from the traditional french press to the more exotic siphon vacuum preparation. The owner, Frank, is a very personable, and is eager to discuss the various coffees offered in depth. He can tell you everything from the origin of the bean to how the various levels of roasts impact the flavor. The staff is also very knowledgeable and can point you towards the appropriate coffee choice, but sometimes come across as snobby. read more

Finally a place where the espresso is not bitter. Chazzano coffee actually cares about what they serve and the staff really knows their coffee. I always thought I hated coffee till I went to Jamaica 2 years ago and had blue mountain for the first time. After that it opened up a new world for me. But what I would find is that the only place I could get good coffee was in other countries or at home with beans I ordered online. I have looked high and low for a good coffee place in the area that uses good beans and have been disappointed every time. Always bitter beans and a staff that just goes through the motions. Well that all changed today after stopping in at Chazzano. The staff was great and they really cared about what I thought about the espresso. This is such a nice change. They said they had a variety of espresso beans to try. They even roast their beans they get in fresh. The owner said he throws out beans that are over two weeks old. I think Chazzano Coffee really hits a niche in Ferndale. People love coffee and appreciate local business owners with passion. I wasn't sure what to order when I arrived, Groupon ($10 for $20 in merchandise) in hand. I didn't want coffee prepared because I'm personally a bit sensitive to it, but I did want to get several half-pounds to send to friends as gifts. I had ZERO idea what they offered, having never been in before. A young lady suggested I try the Ethiopian blend. Half-pounds are $8 and full pound bags are $15, saving $1 if you buy the full pound. I got it ground for drip coffee makers because I didn't know what my friends had and I personally had a drip maker at home. In the car the blend smelled sort of like cat food, but in the pot it did smell heavenly when I made some for guests. I'm not a coffee aficionado, but I do appreciate good-smelling coffee. Like other patrons, though, I occasionally like a snack or cream and sugar with my coffee drinks. The "we don't do anything but coffee, period" attitude was a little off-putting, but it was outweighed to me by how friendly and passionate the owner and his staff were. I will probably return for more coffee gifts, but I can't see myself hanging out there of my own volition for coffee or tea... unless they decide biscotti isn't an evil thing. Overall 1.5 thumbs up. The selection of high quality, small batch, fair-trade certified beans available not only for sale at this gem of a roaster but also to choose from for your very own delectable cuppa joe is astounding! I make a habit of trying to find the best local coffee shops when I travel and this one was absolutely delightful. From the knowledgeable and talented barista crew to the selection of whole beans (I brought a pound of the Kenya AA back to Seattle with me) - not to mention the friendly community enjoying the free wi-fi - left me wanting for nothing. I ordered a coffee there and they must of used the wrong grind for a french press because the bottom of my cup was all grounds. No thank you. Very expensive roasts($15). If you're roasting it right there, why charge so much for it? I get GREAT coffee for $8. The owner is obnoxious. Workers are morons. read more

LOVED going to this hidden gem, if you know you know you know this spot, if you don't you should. COFFE SNOB life is spoken for here. I was even given a tour to the back room where the beans are roasted and got to watch and learn how it is done. I truly hope they expand. We were drawn to the space for their Matcha Green Tea - we got it 2 different ways, mine was iced and basic, but amazing, the barista was a gem, she talked to us about the benefits of Matcha , its origins and how to properly prepare it. My partner got it hot and in a latte. They have a cute passport book of where all the Chezzano Coffee is sold - makes it a fun game to fill up the book of visitations. I went home with a large jug of their cold brew - now I get to enjoy it all the time ! we were super hyped up while at Chezzano and after. It was a perfect boost to our sunday morning. read more

Fantastic coffee. The owner Frank puts his passion into every cup of coffee he serves and is very interested in your having a personal experience. Each bean is roasted in house and served with an interest in customer satisfaction that you just don't find anywhere else. Coffee here is served in a french press, a syphon (resulting in a clean cup of coffee, meaning no grounds in your cup), or in various espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos. On each table there is a flavor card to help you better taste the subtle notes hidden in Chazzano's robust and diverse blends. The decor is generically modern but comfortable, and honestly, is a nice change from the earth-tones and safe neutrals of the starbucks coffee culture. Chazzano is taking on the giants of corporate coffee and proving that small business's bring a level of personal experience to the customer that just cannot be had anywhere else. When we finished our 4 cup french press, Frank invited us on a brief tour of his beans and roasting facility, after which he allowed us to watch him roast a customer's special order Kona beans. My daughter and I met my son-in-law slash coffee aficionado here so I could finally see what he's been raving about for some time now. Well, while we were waiting the friendly barrista gave us a brief education and taste of their coffees and how they were prepared and served. Then my son-in-law came in and was known by all there, so we felt like we'd been there before. Let me tell you this isn't St%&*ucks, this is a place where people who love and want to explore coffee can come and pursue their appreciation of it or just "cup" good coffee and leave, it's up to you! Before you go though, get a look at the roaster and the tools used to make great coffee and get some to go. A cool experience. I have now cupped.
