Rest area food is always way more expensive then it should be and it also never tastes as good as it's stand alone counterpart.....why? Well, that's a mystery. I stopped at this Checkers on Friday night for a quick dinner while heading to Queens. I haven't been to a Checkers in well over a year so it was a little treat. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger combo with fries and got some mozzarella sticks as well because it's a 7 hour drive and wanted to feel shame the rest of the way. The food didn't take all that long to come out and before you know it we were back on the road. The burger itself was pretty average and didn't leave much of a lasting impression, it served its purpose though. I'm a fan of the checkers fries and those were up to par. The mozzarella sticks which were called "monsterella sticks" wet slightly larger then a French fry and tasted about as good as eating uncooked cheese wrapped in bread......basically they were pretty bad. I'm not sure where the term "monster" comes from in describing small and undercooked mozzarella sticks but these are not something I would ever want to try eating again. Plus side, they do have ordering screens which gives you the ability to scan the menu and pick and choose what you want. Overall, this is a pretty typical fast food place in a rest area. Expect to pay way more then you should for good and get lackluster service. read more

The employees here also work in a nightclub as "Coat Checkers" so that's why they always look tired. I'm secretly a fan of Checkers milkshakes, which friends tell me suck badly. Maybe I like that you can get a mini one for $2. I have no idea. The shakes at this location didn't do it for me. The prices are higher than at other Checkers. In the old days we thought that stopping at Pembroke Rest Stop was one of the highlights of going to Rochester. A few Checkers burgers and shakes later, we have realized we were wrong. Once the staple fast food of our trips to Florida, Checkers has infiltrated WNY, and so be it, given they are open until 3am or something ridiculous. This location, though, is not. Service, food, prices all not so good. Stick to the non-thruway locations. And if you have an attitude, Checkers it at the door. read more

Decent fast food place inside the Pembroke Travel Plaza off the highway. I'm from Canada and we don't have Checkers so I actually had to find this one here. Still love their CHILLI CHEESE FRIES. I used the self serve checkout and they messed up my order. I ordered a LARGE combo but ended up with either small or medium. I also requested they hold everything including the tomatoes but they messed up that too. Don't stop here, keep driving. I hope the general manager reads this and takes action. read more

My boyfriend and I were in the mood for burgers and this was the closest restaurant we could get to. The burger wasn't too bad. Juicy but thin. The toppings were fresh and yummy. I liked how seasoned the fries were. We also got chili cheese fries but we weren't a fan of the spicy nacho cheese. My boyfriend got a banana shake and it was super thick. It tasted and felt like it was pureed bananas, nothing else. Not bad for fast food but I don't know if I would try it again. read more

We came through and ordered 2 chicken sandwiches but were given 2 hamburgers. Mistakes happen but we both ordered the #6 which is chicken and the cashier said "no you ordered 9 I said no sorry but we did not. She ripped the bag off the counter and stormed to back. Rip off. $10 meal gets you one of those gas station hot dogs that are worth two bucks. Another $10 meal gets you a mcchicken knockoff. I don't eat fries with ketchup. Definitely not the highlight of my vacation. We were on the road and hungry, but on a slight time constraint, so stopping at the travel plaza for some food was inevitable. I picked Checkers, since I'd never been, but was disappointed in my meal from start to finish. It took an unusually long time to receive our food. I know fast food places aren't foodie palaces, but in fast food, how the hell do you compromise SPEED? Checkers isn't any different than McDonald's or Burger King, but the prices were noticeably higher. $8 for a chicken sandwich, fries, and a drink? The food wasn't particularly good or bad. It was almost like eating play food from a Fisher Price kitchen. Pack some snacks and pick another restaurant. Deviating from the interstate will be worth it. read more

Two of things that I hate about driving back east is the tolls and the drivers. Most of the bridges and good roads require a form of shakedown called a toll. Besides having to pay to drive on a crappy road you can't stop most anywhere you want. You have to wait for a Travel Plaza. I have a seventy minute bladder and the plazas are about 45 miles apart so if you do the math, you'll know that I'm doing the Pee-Pee dance behind the wheel about half of the time. I had the privilege of using one of the comfort stations today at the Pembroke Plaza today and figured what the heck, I'll grab a bite while I'm stopped. They had pizza slices rendering grease under heat lamps at one place so I passed and checked out the burger place. A large poster proclaimed that everyone should try a Big Buford and so they should. Now I remember that a Rally's at PCH and Cherry in LB has, or maybe still has, Big Bufords and it was so bad that I've never been back. The one, almost, redeeming quality of the Rally's was at least it was cheap and the food showed it. Well nothing is ever cheap, or even reasonable, at these Plazas. They're like the food courts at an airport, but without the airplanes. They have a captive customer base and they charge whatever they like. On the return trip, when I start doing the Pee-Pee dance and can;t make it to an exit, I'll be using the Plaza. But if my tummy starts growling like a Grisly crawling out of the cave in Spring, Read my lips, no more Plazas. read more

This Checkers is at a rest stop...one would think they would be quicker. I was on a bus and I couldn't believe how slow they were. Let's be clear the staff in the back was not slow it was the cashier. Only one register was working and this lady was slow. I was scared I was going to miss my bus. I grabbed a burger (Big Bufford) while my road trip companions made use of the "facilities". It was a decent fast food double cheese burger that didn't break the bank even considering it's on the thruway. The best part? They whipped it up so quick I got back to the car as everyone was getting buckled in. I was not popular as I enjoyed my burger while everyone else watched. Red haired young teenaged food attendant while serving me kept wiping his nose on his left hand and his right shirt collar. He coughed into his left shirt collar. Then, he placed his fingers INTO the french fry basket to taste one of those fries. I left disgusted and afraid, wondering about the future of my health.
