Panda Chinese Restaurant - Sweet-and-sour chicken, fried rice, and an egg roll

Cedar Springs' Reliable Takeout Classic; Panda Chinese Restaurant at 14111 White Creek Ave NE in…read moreCedar Springs delivers the kind of straightforward, satisfying American-Chinese meal that keeps people coming back. The sweet-and-sour chicken combination plate is a strong example of what they do well: a generous portion of battered chicken, fried rice, and a well-made egg roll, all packaged for takeout and ready to eat. The chicken arrives in large, irregular hunks with a crisp golden coating. The pieces were so substantial that I reached for kitchen shears and snipped each one into bite-size portions before I even sat down. No knife required. I call that a mixture of brilliance and laziness--the portions are that generous. The sweet-and-sour sauce comes in a small cup that belongs with the plate, not as an afterthought. You can dip each bite or pour it over the entire serving at once. I am a heavy-sauce person, and the amount they include always meets that need without leaving the chicken dry or the meal unfinished. The fried rice that comes with the combo is properly wok-seasoned, with visible bits of chicken, green onion, onion, and bean sprouts. It has enough flavor and texture to stand on its own rather than tasting like an afterthought. The egg roll is a standout: hot, crunchy wrapper and a filling that actually tastes like vegetables instead of just filler. This is the kind of no-frills local spot many people look for when they want familiar Chinese-American flavors without a long drive into Grand Rapids. Portions are large enough for leftovers, the food travels well, and the combo is an easy one-stop order. If you live in or pass through Cedar Springs and you're in the mood for classic sweet-and-sour chicken, fried rice, and a solid egg roll, Panda is worth the stop.

Good food at a good price. They really give you a lot. It is very fast and i easy here often.read more

The Pad Thai with sweet tamarind sauce was a bit too sweet for my taste but they have two other Pad Thai recipes on the menu I'm eager to try. My husband loves the Yellow Curry dish. The ambiance is pretty typical of any Thai restaurant. Tastefully decorated, not cluttered or tacky at all. The menu was a bit lengthy, but it was nicely laid out and easy to read. The prices are pretty comparable with other Thai restaurants. Our waiter, I believe, was also the owner of the restaurant, a very pleasant gentleman. He was knowledgable about the menu and offered a spice range of 1 (no spice) to 10 (extremely spicy), and anywhere in between. My son ordered the Drunk Mama dish, my husband ordered the Mongolian dish, and after asking if there was soy in it (and mentioning I had a soy allergy), I ordered the Vegetable dish. The waiter assured me they could make it without soy. It was literally only a few minutes when the dishes started coming to the table, piping hot. I had only taken about 2 bites when the waiter came over to the table, took one look at my dish and said, "Oh, let me remake that for you. I can tell this has soy in it." He whisked it away immediately. A few minutes later, I was given a newly prepared dish, without soy, and was told there would be no charge for dinner. I also received many apologies for the mixup. This is one place that genuinely cares about their customers. My vegetable dish was full of tasty, very fresh vegetables, cooked to perfection. All 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The spice levels were perfect, the presentation was nice, and the taste was outstanding. We love Thai food and have tried a lot of them, but this one is now at the top of our list. We live on the south end of Grand Rapids, but we will definitely be back! I'm looking forward to trying many of the other dishes listed on the menu. I highly recommend you try Jasmine Thai too.

A group of work friends and I initially planned to grab takeout but wisely chose to dine in. A break from the office was well worth it. The buffet stations were consistently stocked, ensuring there was never an empty tray. Every dish was hot and fresh, a rarity for some buffets. The only mild mishap was one unfortunate diner underestimating the temperature of a bacon-wrapped bite--though, if anything, this speaks to the kitchen's dedication to serving food at optimal temperatures. I piled my plate high with their green beans, cooked in a style I describe as distinctly Chinese--simple, flavorful, and addictively good. General Tso's chicken was rich and saucy, delivering just the right balance of sweet and spice. While I can't confirm the origins of the General's recipe, I can tell you it's certainly not from the Colonel. The pepper steak was well-prepared, and in a strategic move, I borrowed some broccoli from the chicken and broccoli dish, a maneuver I highly recommend for boosting vegetable intake. One of the more mysterious, yet delightful, items was a spring roll filled with a meat pâté-like filling. I didn't know exactly what I was eating, but I did know I wanted more of it. Using green beans as a base instead of rice proved to be an excellent choice, keeping the meal lighter and preventing an afternoon energy crash. The service was exemplary. The staff moved with sniper-like accuracy, ensuring my ice water was never empty--I have never felt more hydrated at a restaurant. The environment was clean, though the restaurant has seen younger days. It has been around for years, and I don't think I've seen a change. China One Buffet checks all the necessary boxes--solid food quality, exceptional service, and an experience that delivers on expectations. I'll absolutely be back, green beans first, mystery spring roll second. If you're looking for a buffet that gets it right, this is one worth visiting.
