Came for a Sunday game. Great Atmosphere if you're a Bills fan. Super fun environment. My only recommendation ... eat before you come. I'm vegetarian leaning towards vegan and this was the worst bar experience in Portland yet. NO accommodations or modifications. My partner got a cheese quesadilla and even that wasn't good. I ordered a Bloody Mary, I looked over at the bar and the mix was in a Sweet baby rays container. Once I received it, it was just watery ketchup. One star ... won't recommend. I love that they removed the wall from the store although, it was fun back in the day when you had to go through the store to get to the bar. Love they're open everyday and even after games. My boyfriend and I are always going here for the beer and wings! The wings are yummy, and the beer is just a plus! The prices are pretty good too! Though we usually go on Tuesdays after 8pm, if we go! All of the wings are worth trying, I think we have tried most of them! The service is also usually pretty good! Last time we were there, I think there was only one guy basically running he whole place. There wasn't too many people there, but there were enough to where we were impressed that he was being so attentive to everyone that was there that evening! I should've know I wouldn't be satisfied with the wings being based on the weight and not by the piece, but was not expected to be taken for a ride to the tune of 9$ for 4 wings. 2.25 a wing is quite ridiculous in my opinion. Sat at the bar. 1. It was like pulling teeth to get him to ask me what I wanted to drink. 2. It was like pulling teeth to have him give me a menu. I even had to ask if they even served food since nobody else was eating. 3. It was like pulling teeth to get him to take my order. 4. Got my onion rings and asked for ketchup. 22 minutes later I got my ketchup only after he asked if I was still waiting for my rings to cool down since I still had a full basket. 5. Ate my ice cold rings with my ketchup. 6. I think this place is pay as you order since I had to pay 3 separate times for a beer, rings, and another beer. 7. Bring your own pen to sign your credit card bills. 8. Thank goodness I ordered finger food and sat near the stack of cocktail napkins. I will try this place again but not between 4pm and 7pm. I attended a UYE bar crawl a couple years ago & Cheerful Bullpen was our last stop of the night/morning. I remembered the drinks were stiff but if I had eaten that night I would've made sure not to return for the food. CB is a dive bar that serves below average food that should only be eaten when one is drunk or hungover. I was sober so trying to enjoy an $8.79 reuben was unfortunate. The reuben wasn't piled high with corn beef like the menu claimed. It was stacked two high. I could barely taste the meat & what I could taste, it was underwhelming to say the least. It was more a sauerkraut sandwich with 1000 island dressing than a reuben. My salad doesn't deserve to be described because I would never get around to saying anything nice about it. My hungover friends loved their breakfast at lunch. I actually wished at the time that I was hungover so my food could taste as good as they described theirs to be. Our server was not in the mood for customers. She was probably hungover, too. Cheerful Bullpen was not the most cheerful experience this time around but I'm sure if you put a few stiff drinks in me it'll suddenly become the best dive bar in PDX. When it comes to dive bars, you've really got to leave any high expectations at the door. But even with all the patronage The Bullpen has had from me over the past five years, I can't attribute it to much of anything other than location. It's position across the street from PGE Park serves well as safety net to keep me from crashing into sobriety after a Beavers game on Thirsty Thursdays. While it claims to be a sports bar, you'll find that the TV's are outnumbered by the amount of domestics on tap, which I had always believed was a cardinal sin for any true sports bar. The grub is pretty slim pickins as well, so don't walk in here looking for much beyond a standard bar menu. The only ray of hope for some sustenance comes in the form of their "Mac Dog." Granted it's not much more than a polish sausage with your choice of toppings, but it's cheap and way better than anything you could have scored back across the street at the game. Just make sure that if you want a bite you get in there before 11pm, which is typically when the kitchen closes down. I can't complain about the atmosphere... too much that is. Inside is long and cozy (in that smoky dive bar kinda way), complete with pool tables, video poker, and a few career drinkers cemented to the bar. The back patio is large and shady; an ideal complement to a dog and a beer on a warm summer evening. While one could certainly do better in the realm of sports bars, there is still a quaint charm to the place that makes it my only option for rounding out a night of fun at PGE Park. Stop number two of the annual Portland Pigs Rugby Club pub crawl took us to The Cheerful Bullpen and they( both the customers and the staff) weren't quite prepared for close to 70 people showing up all at once. A Buffalo Bills bar...... who'd have thunk? My brother can't seem to find a NY Giants bar, and I have a Philadelphia Eagles bar in Tigard, but a Bills bar in Portland.... very odd. Anyways, the beer was cheap (specials every day of the week) and the staff was great. The Blond server with the tattoo sleeve was cool. The rest of the customers were a bit taken back by us.... you can feed the rugby players, we don't bite.... much. It is so close to where i live that i often find myself here without having made a conscience decision to frequent! The beers are nice and cold with changing daily specials. The wait staff are fantastic and friendly. The food is better at lunch time verses dinner time for sandwiches, but for wings anytime is the right time! These are my favorite wings; crunchy regardless if you order one of the many ootions of dry rub or marinate sauce with carrots and dipping sauce. This is my heaven. Great staff all around, they went the extra mile for me tonight and I cant be any happier with my service. 1$ domestic and 2$ micros after 8pm on tuesdays for wing night. Oh my god, amazing wings! 2$ for 6 wings with tons of flavors including some dry rubs. Ive tried many flavors, hawaii 50 and habenaro ranch being my two favorites so far. The patio is big and a legit place to chill and smoke your cigs, drink, or even eat. I am a huge huge chicken wing connoisseur. I just moved to portland recently, I used to go to hooters alot, all over the country. I've been to many and these cheerful wings here are better than any hooters or buffalo wild wings. I recently came here for a mingler with a group that I belong to. The establishment was very accomodating for our group. The staff greeted me cheerily as I entered the establishment. It was a nice evening, and we went out to the back patio. It was a perfect space for mingling. I had the drink that was on special. Vodka Redbull for $5. Not really my type of drink, but it was ok. I shared a Signature Cheerful Gourmet Pizza with a friend. On Thursdays, it's a $1 off. We ordered the Taylor Street Pizza which was garlic cream sauce, grilled chicken, tomatoes, mozzarella and basil on a thin crust. It was actually quite tasty! This place is directly across from Jeld Wen Field home of the Portland Timbers. So I can imagine on game nights, the place is probably overflowing! read more

I've never made a Yelp review before but I made an account just to highlight how poor this experience was from a previously-beloved neighborhood bar. I work in the service industry, and when I get off work I like to go to bars because they close at 2/2:30. I was aware of this walking in around 1:30, but as we asked for food menus she reminded us immediately that she closed at 2. Besides that, she gave a very strange look at me when I gave her my ID and she had to reconfirm my first name as if it was not me... my girlfriend gave her passport and she thought it was expired, because it was ISSUED last month (does she not know where the expiration date is on a U.S. passport?) Shrugging those two weird vibes off, we started to look through the food menu and were immediately reminded again that she closed at 2. She even went so far as to suggest that we take the food to-go which was strange to me. Why would she not want us to enjoy the last 30 minutes that they were open in a comfortable setting? We were going to order right away obviously. It's a shame because I used to frequent here before when I lived in Goose Hollow and I loved it! The burger with the barbeque sauce and bacon is very good, but now I probably will not return because there was no hospitality at all. I did not feel like she wanted to take our business, even though we were coming in for their last 30 minutes and were well aware that they closed at 2. My three favorite things - Chicken wings, Franks and good ranch dressing. This place does it freaking right and thank god I stumbled upon this as all I've wanted was some freaking chicken wings here in Portland. Super chill little sports bar atmosphere, we saw a little of everything from your hard working men, people just showing up for beer, people stopping in to watch the game and couples dressed up as if this place was fancy. Update came in and Sara was awesome and treated me like I was family and spencer made a really great Burger that I hope they add to the menu and call it the "James burger" Strawberry rhubarb lemonade was amazing reminds me of a great margarita on a beach. Darth Vader is nice a sweet if your a light wait I wouldn't have more the 2 of these jäger hits hard at first then calms down if you let your drink set for a minute. They fry their own chips and the have just the right amount texture and a nice crunch The jalapeño Jack cheddar burger is awesome and not for the tame they will check your Mexican creads with the amazing jalapeños in it. So we went here prior to thorns game this week. Now we had been there before COVID when it was just the bar. Then we had no issue. Even when it was busy prior to a game they seemed to manage and had great service. Well that was then, this is now... We chose to sat outside. For being before a game it really wasn't that busy I think there were 5 or more tables empty. There were two servers covering the outside dining. The server that seemed to be covering our area completely ignored us. As we sat waiting other tables began to fill up and she went to them took their orders and they got food BEFORE WE EVEN PLACED OUR ORDER! I had to get up and go inside to ask if someone could come take our order. Finally the lady covering our section strolled over with little sense of urgency or even an acknowledgement that some how we had been missed. Mind you she made eye contact with me multiple times prior to coming to take our order. She took our food order, then when I asked for a Hefeweizen she looked at me puzzled and then said the other staff would come take our drink order. (Weird) The other staff member came over to see if we needed to order when I told her we ordered our food but the other server told us she would take our drink order, she looked at me confused and I just said IDK? Finally we got our food...not worth the money. 4 wings for $9!!!! The server did not bring us napkins. NEVER returned to ask if we needed anything basically ZERO customer service. Now I know food service right now is struggling. HOWEVER...I watched as every other table besides ours was attended to and staff came around and asked if everything was okay...but for us nothing!!! The one thing that our table had at it that was different than every other table...was one of us was Black. I'm not saying the wait staff is racist...but it felt racist. It did not feel good to have to pay for subpar food after feeling completely ignored and disregarded while all the other tables received attention and service while we sat and waited. read more

Cheerful is an unassuming-ly awesome sports bar. You'd miss it if you weren't looking for it, but it's a great Timbers bar. I generally go on Thursday nights for the comedy open mic - one of my favorites in town. The bartender is awesome and Thursday is $3 wine night. They also have decent food. My fav is the chicken Cesar salad and it's hard to find good salads around town. I've also heard they're open for breakfast before Timbers games, which sounds very fun too. read more

Ive only been here for wing nights and ive always had a good time. Who can say no to cheap wings and $1 micros. This place gets packed by 8 so if you have a large group try to convince a few to get there early and grab some tables. They used to have a $3 cover at the door after 8, so id usually come around 7:30 and have a beer while i waited. But the last time i went we noted there was no bouncer at all. To our surprise when we got our checks there was an automatic $3 cover on there for anyone that had wings. BOO. That put a sour taste in my mouth, and yea its only $3 dollars but there wasnt any sign or note on the menu that told me i would be charged that fee. Alas, the wings are still dirt cheap, and the beer as well. But i recommend that they start notifying people about the charge somehow, seems like it could be something people start to really dislike about the place. read more

I met a group of friends the other night at this place, it was my first (and possibly last) visit. The staff were super nice and friendly. Service was fast. I am sure they are slam packed on a game night, but it was really quiet with only 6 or so people inside and all the rest outside on their private patio. We were on the patio, I would have had to leave if not because the inside has a very distinctive odor. Several of us spent time discussing exactly how to describe the overwhelming fragrance, I said it was definitely Eau de Cat-piss, another friend suggested it might be human or bunny, and yet another decided it was mold and mildew. Regardless, if you plan to go here and your nose is in any sort of working condition, plan to spend a lovely time enjoying the Cheerful Bullpen OUTSIDE on their very nice patio. Order a lot at once because it's pretty slow getting to you (i'd say at least a 20 min wait) but there are also plenty of draught beers on tap for a DOLLAR. I ordered a coke and it was 1.99. This review is mainly for the weekly Tuesday night wing deal. Over the last year I have been to literally dozens of wings nights at this place and have been procrastinating a review. The only reason I knock a star off of this rating is because of the inconsistency in the quality of wings and service. Sometimes the wings are great: big, juicy, hot, with lots of sauce. Other times they are small, cold and lack sauciness. I give the benefit of the doubt as every place has their off nights and I've been so many times. The service knows what wing night is all about and are usually very prepared for the high volume. I've learned there are strategic table locations that will gain you better service on these nights, which I'll keep to myself ;-) In general, the service is relatively great for a full bar during a special night, especially if there's a Blazers/Timbers game.
