I was not happy with the texture of the general tso's chicken. The lo mein was a bit greasy and the steamed pork dumplings were terrible. The dough was so thick and gummy. Not going to chance trying it a second time- I am not sure why others wrote this was the best Chinese food in the area. read more

This is a great Chinese restaurant, we ordered for pickup and the guy working behind the counter was super friendly. Especially in the middle of all this chaos, it's nice to have good service! The food was very tradition and was pretty good. I just got a small mixed veggies since I wasn't too hungry but my boyfriend went to town. He loves spare ribs with the bone in and he enjoyed these very much. The sweet and sour chicken was good too, they gave a good amount of sauce on the side. The dumplings were really good. Super chewy but still firm enough to hold themselves together. This is just overall a great small restaurant to order from. They were only doing pick up when we called. The minuses: they don't deliver, and they're cash-only. This combination, which I find rare for Chinese food places in my area, lead me to believe that this establishment surely must survive because it must have among the best Chinese food in the area. The pluses: very friendly and genuinely likeable service, and accurate to your order. Long hours. The in between: the food was good, but honestly not exceptional enough to draw me back when I have to make sure that I have cash with me, and if I happen to not already be out and about, drag myself out to pick it up instead of have it delivered to me. Bottom line: Would you regret getting food from here? Absolutely not. Is it worth the hassle of not having delivery available, nor accepting credit cards? Probably not. I lived in Jersey for over 20 years and have tried every Chinese restaurant in every town around these parts, None maker everything perfect but I found that they all have one, two dishes better any anyone else. And for the Chef it's their Beef and Broccoli. The beef comes in large but thinly slice pieces. The Broccoli is fresh cut and firm and not mushy from being prepped 12 hours earlier. The garlic and ginger sauce is where the magic really happens, a dash of soy sauce, sugar, and a secret homemade spice powder, there will get them laughing at you if you ask what's in it. I get plain white rice with it because it justs swallows up the sauce as I scoop it up. Just thinking or writing about it turns me into Pavlov's dog, salivating as I write this review. read more

Came here to try some NJ hole in the wall Chinese food on our last night before returning to LA. I ordered the chicken chow mein combo and fiancé ordered General Tso chicken combo. The combos come with fried rice and an egg roll and they give you a free soda with purchase. When we got home I opened my order and all I saw was chicken and onions. We called back to ask what this was and where was the noodles??? The owner responded that on the east coast, chicken chow mein is chicken and celery and doesn't come with noodles, it only comes with noodles on the west coast. I am not sure if this is true or not about the east coast, but I am chinese and "mein" literally means noodles in Chinese. He didn't offer to replace this with their lo mein or something else I actually wanted, which they would have done on the west coast, so sadly this was thrown out. Definitely not trying to bring down my asian restaurants in NJ, but just beware when ordering their chow mein. read more

I am so happy that I discovered Chef Chan because it is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in the area. They are a hole in a wall, but serve up delicious take out Chinese. I have only been here twice, but both times, I have been happy with my food. They are cash only, so keep that in mind before arriving and they sometimes don't have parking readily available - they are located on a pretty busy street, there are a few restaurants in the area. But don't let those two things stop you from ordering! The food is worth it. Their portions are also very generous. I recommend getting their sweet and sour chicken (not oily which is such a plus), beef lo mein (the beef is so flavorful) and sesame chicken. The pluses are that they are not expensive and do give you large portions. More or less a pretty good standard Chinese takeout joint. Its located in a relatively busy area of Rutherford. Parking is a bit hard to come by. I generally park on the side streets, when I drop by for takeout. This place has really good chicken with garlic sauce, one of my favorite foods for Chinese takeout. The garlic sauce is balanced well with the chicken and vegetables. It doesn't have much of a greasy aftertaste to it, that you find at other Chinese takeouts. I've also tried the general tso's chicken and kung pao chicken. Both were just OK. The prices here are pretty cheap, especially the lunch specials. The quality is decent and is comparable to most other Chinese takeout places. read more

I must admit that after my previous review I have returned to this establishment for certain things. Their boneless spare ribs are the best available locally as is the wonton soup. And my son loves the place (no accounting for teenage tastes). We wind up ordering form this an another local place to make up a dinner for all of us.
