My first time trying this place and I visited on my birthday! The people I went with definitely helped the experience feel 5 star but the restaurant itself was just okay. The food wasn't bad, actually quite tasty but I guess my taste buds are used to the more unhealthy, "fake" American Chinese food. Moreover, the server was nice but it was evident her English was a bit lacking so when I asked for a lychee martini, she kept pointing to martini but didn't know what I meant by lychee (so I went for a cosmo instead no biggie). The food came out pretty fast once ordered but any questions we had about the dishes were answered rather ambiguously and when we wanted some chili oil/more napkins we had to kind of hunt the server down. And it was weird because the restaurant really wasn't that busy on a Sunday afternoon. So, overall I still enjoyed my birthday (would've been nice to kinda get called on it especially since the server "checked" my ID but again maybe she didn't really look at it), and I don't think I'd rush to try this restaurant again. Stopped in for another try - handled a big group without issues, good service and didn't mind the kids at a different table ordering their own food. Appetizers - Spicy peppers grilled - some very spicy, others not so bad. Cold sesame noodles were good. Kids were good with the scallion pancakes and spring rolls. Xiaolongbao were good, but not as juicy as a Tasty Moment. Sliced potatoes with green pepper was ok, not sour enough and potatoes a bit overcooked and falling apart. Fish in soupy style was spicy as was the pork blood in chili oil, but perhaps too much MSG as we were all thirsty after that part of the meal. Tofu in sizzling style was more of a sweet & sour tofu - no sizzling but interesting rice cakes. Smoky pork in Szechuan style was good, not too spicy. Beef stew in a clay pot was good, too. The eateries like Szechuan Opera are gorgeous, fancy, and as sleek 'n' chic as as a gazelle in Gucci--but, like, you're still taking your date to....the mall. Huh? Anyway, after a bunch of us decided to unleash our inner mall rats and terrorize the ground floor riding animatronics meant for kids, we worked up enough of an appetite to stop by here for a Sichuan feast. Perhaps more confusing than the fancy-ness of the restaurant was the fact that it was actually....good. Like, approved by your Canto great-aunt good. We got: - West Lake Beef Soup: As hearty and eggy as nostalgia requires - Camphor Tea Duck: Our weakest dish. Skin was good, meat was dry - Stewed Pork Shoulder: Fall-off-the-bone tender with just the right sweet-salty sauce. Your Shanghai nanny would approve. - Garlic Snow Pea Shoots: The obligatory dark greens dish to balance out all the animal protein. This was garlicky and crunchy, just as nature intended. - Stir Fry Lamb in Sichuan Style: My favorite of the night. Perfect amounts of mala and gamey lamb - Dried Sauteed String Beans: No one cooks string beans better than Chinese people, and this dish explains why - Steamed Whole Striped Bass: Because it wouldn't be a proper group dinner without a whole fish to bring luck, prosperity and A+ grades. Never mind that we're all decades out of school... - Special Dry Pot Style: In Mandarin, the Sichuan dry pot actually translates to "fragrant wok", and no Sichuan dinner is complete without one. We got the veggie version and happily munched on thin cauliflower, lotus roots and all the other parts of nature's bounty that hail from East Asia--all tossed with tingling peppercorns. Very cool showcasing Chinese Opera masks on the wall. The space is open and spacious and bright. Pot of Jasmine Tea yum. The pot of tea/cup and the plates/bowls all match! The American Dream Mall is gargantuan. Three million square feet, makes it the 2nd largest in the country. I've been a number of times, and still have not found the water park, or ski slope. With over 60 choices for food, weeding out the good from the bad may take time. One trick is to walk through the regular food court; offering fried food, pizza and grease fueled platters (along with screaming children) and stop in at one of the better restaurants. Where you go to dine. On our last visit we chose -Szechuan Opera- Upon entering, a woman was casually making wontons by hand. A good sign in my book. The staff is friendly, and the menu is large. We started with Spicy Wontons w/chili sauce and Pork Soup Dumplings. We try and order Soup Dumplings, whenever it's on the menu. These were one of the better ones we've had. The Wontons were excellent. Perfect spice/ heat ratio. For the mains, Dry Pot Beef and Salt & Pepper Fried Fish. Dry Pot was soooo good. First time I had it, and would order it again. The fish was perfectly fried, but a bit bland. The sauce from both the Dry Pot and the Wontons came in handy, to enhance the fish. It was a lot of food, and we were planning to take some home. Last day of restaurant week at American Dream so 4 of us dined here. Beautiful spacious interior and all staff were very pleasant. Food came out very quickly prepared family style. I just personally wasn't used to everything coming all at once, as I prefer to eat courses separately. However, for $39 each, this was the absolute best deal out of all the places that participated. Each got to choose an app, soup or soft drink, an entree of over 50 choices, and protein fried rice, lo mein or mei fun. They did not skimp on portions as they stuck to family size so our table was jammed with plates. We tried the following: Scallion pancake- very crispy thin and flaky! Great wit dipping sauce. Shrimp dumplings- filling was completely shrimp! Very tasty just needed a sauce so we dipped into other dumpling sauce Pan fried pork dumplings- very good more like gyoza Cucumbers in garlic spicy oil- my fave as I ate the whole plate practically Egg drop and hot n sour soup- both were bland to me and I would have like if they added wood ear mushrooms to the hot n sour Wonton soup- excellent broth had a little kick to it which we pleasantly enjoyed Chicken with mixed veggies - good but similar to what I get at any Chinese local restaurant Spicy crispy style shrimp- excellent, but you have to enjoy authentic Szechuan peppers loaded on the plate. Food is phenomenal! Out of everything I tried, which was roasted duck in a bun, seafood dry hot pot and tripe with black pepper, my favorite was the tripe. It was extremely soft and flavorful. As if it was braised for hours. The service was pretty good as well. Nothing extraordinary. I think my favorite part of the restaurant was the interior design. I did not expect it coming from a Mall restaurant. A lot of people come in here thinking it's your regular Chinese food place and they are extremely disappointed like the family next to us with small children. The bullfrog was indeed a bit small, much smaller than the bullfrog at Chinese restaurants in California, making it a bit of an effort to debone. We grabbed dinner at Szechuan Opera last night when we were at American Dream. This was our first time here. The food was good and exceeded my husband's expectations. After a lot of walking that day, we were hungry. He got the eggplant with garlic sauce and mixed vegetable fried rice. I wanted to try one of their specialty dishes, so I asked our waiter what she would recommend and went with that - double cooked pork (comes with white rice). We shared an order of scallion pancakes. Came during a packed holiday and was so happy to be away from the hoards of people jammed in the regular Coca Cola food court. When we stepped into Szechuan Opera it was so beautifully quiet and beautiful inside. I had been craving beef dry pot so we ordered that along with salt and pepper fish, chili wontons, soup dumplings, and a couple of sodas to ease the peppercorn tingle. Absolutely LOVED the dry pot beef, I thought I'd have leftovers to take home but I kept picking at it long after we finished eating until it was pretty much gone, lol! I've mentioned elsewhere that I always get xiao long bao soup dumplings anywhere I go and these weren't bad, I wish we'd gotten ginger slivers and better vinegar but not the worst dumplings we've enjoyed. The rice felt like it dried out a bit and wasn't easy to scoop with chopsticks but the fried fish was excellent and we loved the crispy garlic and onion on top. We were courteous enough to take them out and put them on plates so that they could eat we had my family in from Arizona. The host came over and aggressively told us that the children were not allowed to eat outside food inside so I said OK. We as a family ordered close to $300 worth of food. He came over again and insisted that they have to stop eating the food. I explained to him that their children They were almost completed with their hamburger. Ultimately, I ended up telling him to settle me up and then I will not eat any of the food and I will never come back here again. He was OK with that a terrible business decision and an awful way to run an establishment. I can understand this point with adult adults, but children should have a pass on this item. I came here for dinner with my family on a Saturday night around 6pm. The wait wasn't long and they asked guests to check in on the wait list on a tablet by the host stand. I wasn't happy that their hostess didn't even pay attention to the special notes section of my table request. We had a wheelchair with us and they tried sitting us on the second level, because they didn't even wait to take us as a group to our table to notice and I had to address it with them when we got to the stairs. Then we had to stand on the side while they found another suitable table for us and we ended up in the way of other guests. They didn't take long to clean off another table for us but they didn't bring us menus when they gave us the new table. We couldn't get anyone's attention for a few minutes so we asked the nearby table for their menu. The customer experience was sub par, between the hostess and the server who took our order. They served our soup dish without a ladle or serving spoon and I had to wait for them to come by to ask for it. Their staff weren't very attentive and didn't come by to check in unless I flagged them down to request something. My best experience was at the end of the meal with the young man who came to bring us the check and process our payment. He also brought us containers to pack up our to go. He was very courteous and hospitable. All of their other staff just seemed to hate their job and clearly didn't want to be there nor could they properly handle a crowd cause they seemed very frazzled. Additionally, it was very loud in the restaurant. For the prices you're paying, it would have been nice to not have felt like you're dining in Chinatown with their attitudes and rowdiness. Now... the food. It was actually decent, but definitely was not as authentic as I expected it to be. Their chicken in chili sauce wasn't spicy nor numbing, and had a sweetness to it. The chicken was also cut too large. They should be smaller pieces. The Xiao long baos tasted okay but there wasn't much soup in it. Just tasted more like a dumpling. Also, I'm used to soy sauce with ginger as the dipping sauce, so not sure what this was. Overall, if you're in the mall and want Asian food, this isn't a bad option. If you want good Szechuan food, stop by (preferably on a weekday when it's not packed). First, the food was AMAZING. Their mastery in chili oil really shines through. Every dish was bursting with flavor and wonderful textures. Their mung bean noodles was the most memorable dish. The perfectly sour and spicy sauce paired with the cold noodles was oh so good. DISCLAIMER: All we came for we're for the apps! Okay so we get here and it wasn't packed at all and there was no wait. The restaurant appears a little smaller on the inside than it was outside, but was very clean with a window into the clean kitchen. Our server approached us with his tablet to take the order. I think that's the 1st time ever that I've seen a server use a tablet, but I could be totally wrong and oblivious up until this point! Now understandably, they have been open only for 3 days and it was understandable if they didn't have some items. In this case, it was anything on the menu with shrimp. They also said that the soup dumplings were basically already made, which means you could not ask for lower sodium or MSG for them. We did not mind. So we ended up ordering vegetable dumplings, the soup dumplings and the pork buns. My wife really loved the soup dumplings - she would have had ten of them without batting an eye. I really liked them too. We also thought the pork buns were delicious - the bun itself tasted a little sweet, almost like pancakes. The vegetable dumplings worked for me but they were the least favorite for my wife. If I had to guess, they had broccoli and spinach in them. I also had the taro tea, which was amazing! It was as if they heated the jellies and poured the cold taro tea over it! Great stuff, haven't had taro tea like that ever. Also as a side note, they were out of the boba but I'm kind of glad they were because jelly may have been the better choice. My son enjoyed everything given to him - he is only less than two years old but he loved the rice, loved the pork bun and liked the soup dumpling. Only did take out so can't speak for sit down. I will say that the take out kiosk system in the mall should be updated to include a phone number so you can be texted when the food is ready. Just seems like a easier experience to wander around rather than wait expecting any minute for your bag to come out. I'm a bit torn for this review. Three stars feels low for a review, but I also think four stars and above should really be reserved for restaurants I would easily go back to. It does, however, give the impression of a higher end restaurant, and I don't think the rest of the experience had that. Service was okay, but we were also there at a quiet part of the day with only a few other tables. The food wasn't bad, but wasn't great. For being located at the mall, I can't be unhappy with it. It was certainly better than food court Chinese. The wonton soup had a great flavor, but the soup was lukewarm and the wontons were cold. We were the first table in the restaurant for the day, so it kind of felt like I got leftover soup from the night before. Hot and sour soup was tasty and a good temperature. The dan dan noodles were a disappointment. They just tasted flat, there was not much flavor to them at all. The char siu bao and pan-fried chives and shrimp dumplings were both pretty good. The dry pot-style tofu was flavorful and a good portion. We got it at their regular spice level and it had a decent amount of heat. I was kind of surprised they didn't make it less spicy considering we were at a touristy mall. I bet some guests are caught off guard, but we were happy that it actually had some heat to it. I did think the prices were quite fair for the dish sizes, especially considering it's at the mall and the other full service restaurants have pretty inflated prices. I came here for dinner on a Saturday night with my family. It's located in A Court on the 3rd floor. Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao and Little Sheep Hot Pot will be opening soon next to it. The mall might as well be called Chinese Dream Mall at this rate. This place just opened so they're still working out the kinks. We ordered the whole fish with pickled vegetable and the eggplant with chili garlic. We got the eggplant dish first and it was delicious. It was a little spicy and very garlicky. The whole fish took a long time. We finally just canceled the dish since it was 30 minutes later and we finished the eggplant. The staff were very friendly and they did give us a discount for the inconvenience. I'll still give them another shot and come back when they've figured things out. read more
