Coyoacan Taqueria & Brew - Ah, heavenly birria tacos!

We had to have our taco fix, and we love takeout from Coyoacán Taqueria in Shaker Square (Dec…read more2025). We pulled into the alley behind the restaurant, and went in for some favorites. I always get their birria tacos, savory tender meat in grilled corn double-layer-tortillas, juicy, with seared cheese and tangy cilantro, additional consommé on the side for dipping and pouring. It's salty and richly-seasoned, a three handfuls of messy deliciousness for $14! If you want to congratulate me, it's the first time i didnt spill the sauce on myself :-). Pro-tip: Lean forward over your plate, and shield yourself with lots of napkins! And wear a complicated brown pattern. We got pairs of $4.24 gently-spiced flavorful pork spit-roasted pastor tacos, and roasted beef asada, and chipotle chinga chicken, all smothered in shredded cheese and lettuce and veggies. They gave us sides of red and green salsas to splash around. We got tasty tender black beans and orange Méxican rice, and lovely bright semi-sweet semi-spicy fresh guacamole and plenty of thin crispy fresh-made chips. You can order pre-planned tacos or have them built-to-order. The menu has luscious-looking $4.50 tamals, $11 bowls burritos and quesadillas, $12 salads including one with cactus, $7 kids' meals, $5 and $5.50 Méxican and domestic beers, $10 margaritas, and a selection of $2 - $4 Méxican and domestic soft drinks and coffee. The staff is friendly and efficient at Rey's family-run legacy Coyoacán restaurant, named after a historic village and modern borough in México City, "the land of coyotes", humanity's "elder brother". The food tastes fresh and made-with-care. It's a good location just a two-minute walk from a Rapid Blue-Line and Green-Line station. And if you prefer, you can dine-in in their brightly decorated storefront. Oh! Don't forget $3.75-taco Tuesday!

I didn't mind though! And my husband got the el pastor and enjoyed it too. Great spot in a super cute location.

Service was poor. The woman working the counter/tables…read morebasic friendly. Barely spoke to you. She served my food first. No utensils. No beverages. I had asked for hot tea. Hubby asked for Turkish coffee and an iced hibiscus tea. They served the nearby table their coffee within 5 minutes of asking for it! I had to ask/remind her of our coffee order. I'm eating my shawarma dry, with no beverage. Picking at my fries because no utensils. Hubby's food still not out. Finally, he was served, the wrong dish! She walked away. I had to tell her he ordered the salad, not the manti. The manti was for another table. I had to ask for my tea. Finally I was asked which type of herbal tea I wanted. Hubby's salad came out. He's bothered; asked for it to go. I didn't see a dressing on it. Usually a Mediterranean salad has some type of vinaigrette. We'll see when we get home. The flavor of my shawarma was good. The iced tea, was weak. Note: when we got there, there was one couple, and a couple of men at a different table. The men might have been friends/family. They left with 10 minutes of our arrival. A second couple arrived after us. They got served their hot food (the manti) before my husband's cold salad! It was not busy where better service could have been provided. Not a value at all, for what we paid.
