She never tries to up-sell me on anything I don't want but makes great recommendations and why she makes those recommendations. I am incredibly picky about my haircuts. My curly, course hair is equally picky about my haircuts. I had a wonderful stylist in Arizona, and now that I had moved back to Washington, my search was on to find someone new. After going to about three other salons over the course of about a year, I was still disappointed. I then happened upon Chemel Salon's website through Google. They have a fantastic questionnaire that will pair you with one of their stylists. I took the quiz and was paired with Alisha. I then didn't think anything of it, or take any immediate action, but the next day received a call from salon rep, Sage, regarding my questionnaire. Sage was great! And I was incredibly impressed that they were reaching out to me. She asked me some more questions, and soon I had an appointment set up for a haircut with Alisha. At my haircut appointment, I was not disappointed. Alisha took a good 30 minutes or so asking me all kinds of questions about my past haircuts, what I liked and disliked about them, how I style my hair, how I prefer to have it cut... etc. She also educated me along the way. I was blown away. After my haircut (which I was superbly happy with) I scheduled to come back and get color done, also with Alisha. That appointment went just as fantastic as the first. Alisha is absolutely amazing. Upon my first appointment she started with a consultation. We went over what I do and do not like about hair. I showed her my Pinterest hair board to show her different things I like. She told me what would work well with my features and my hair's existing condition. From there she gave me a cut that looked great and went over what products to use to get the healthier hair that I desired. My next visit I threw her a curve ball. I wanted to take my hair from a coppery brown with highlights to a gray/purple color I found. She informed me of the process and told me that it would take a few visits to achieve. She would need to lighten my hair over a few processes but would make me look fantastic in the meantime. As a make up artist she also gave me makeup tips to go with my new hair color. I got a lot of compliments on the blonde hair and this week we were able to achieve the color I desired! I am so excited to show it off. Alisha has so much passion for hair, she is so relatable and authentic. Our conversations start with hair and we end up talking about kids, travel plans, restaurants, and shopping. On top of being a great Stylist, Alisha is also a great mentor to the up and coming Stylist. She takes the time to show them different techniques and include them in the process and takes note when they do something well. Chemel just has a great atmosphere. LOOOVVVEEE the staff, especially my girl Chelsea! She does amazing work and is so patient and attentive to details. I always have a hard time figuring out what I want to do with my hair so she listens to what I have in mind and makes it happen. She also offers her expertise suggestions which is appreciated since again I never know what's best for me and my hair. She saved my hair from brassy blonde with my dark roots grow out to a beautiful light brown with highlights. It's still a work in progress but so far I love it! Scheduled a root touch up with Natasha for today. She spoke to me about the root touch up. She was unsure what color to use on my brown hair and asked another stylist for assistance. That stylist told her to use a "four." She proceeded to talk with me about the color of my hair, and what color to use. Natasha then stated she would be right back with a price quote for me. She returned with a price of $150. I let her know that I was told it would be $110. She quickly tried to convince me why the price increased and said that basically it is due to the fact that my hair has highlights and is not all one color. Hmmm!? She then stated she was going to talk to the owner and have her explain it to me. The owner came over and was talking very loudly to me and in a condescending manner. She was trying to pitch her sales technique to me as to why I needed to spend the extra money. She stated that, "I should want to walk around in society looking and feeling good, and sometimes you have to spend a little more money to get that." The owner went on and on politely insulting me and talking to me like I was a child. Everyone in the salon could hear her speech. I continued to let her know that I only wanted a root touch up and not all of my hair colored. They both stood over me ranting on and on about how that is not a good idea. The owner made a lot of unprofessional statements to me about my hair. It felt like an ambush to try and get more money out of me! A bait and switch perhaps? After repeatedly asking to only have my roots touched up, the owner then stated that I would have to sign a WAIVER for that! The stylist agreed with her. A waiver for a root touch up? After reading other reviews on this salon, apparently I am not the first person to experience this. I did go to another reputable salon and got exactly what I wanted for half the price!! I will never return to this salon and be subjected to such humiliation again! The receptionist at the front desk was very nice and professional. read more

I used to only go to this salon, because it was the best in Tacoma. For years I had great service, but something has seriously changed. The last time I went there was one of the worst salon experiences I've ever had. She was nice, but did NOT do what I asked and charged me half again more than what I was quoted when I booked. I should have walked out after she spend 25 minutes telling me that my being 15 minutes late meant we wouldn't have time to "do it right" and that the style I wanted- something that I've had done at that exact salon before- wasn't possible. I was desperate and didn't want to be rude so I ignored my instincts and stayed. It was 40 minutes into a 2 hour appointment before she even took me to the wash station... I own that I was late and apologized, fully prepared to not be able to fit in the trim I needed, but I don't think it in any way warranted what happened after. She was sloppy, rushed through things, and kept making weird excuses about it. Like I needed toner, then we didn't have time, so suddenly I didn't need it any more. She then spent less than 5 minutes cutting my hair, didn't even get all of the dead ends off or put in a single layer, and charged me $56 for the privilege. I felt completely taken advantage of. I used to only trust Chemel, but I'm never going back again. I literally paid $200 to have her make my hair worse 6 weeks before my wedding. I cried all the way home and now I can't get what I want done in time for the big day without frying my hair. It was horrible. read more

From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by Kate who made me feel very welcome. I was offered a beverage and was offered a seat and told that my stylist would be with me shortly. I was also met by the owner, Melissa who introduced herself and made me feel welcome. I was then met by Alisha who took the time to listen to my needs and ask questions to understand me. This is the first time I had highlights done and I was very happy with how it turned out along with my haircut! This is a hidden gem. All the hairdressers here are excellent. I've had my hair styled by everyone here and you can tell the owner is very selective with who she hires. Smart business woman. Ashley is going to be my go to gal from here on out. She's a master with the foils & will listen to what you want to achieve and make suggestions to what will work with your hair type. I think I found my new hair place! Finally!! I have been here for 3 years now and have not found a salon that I like as much as this one... While I did use a Living Social, there was an upcharge for foils, *but* I was told that prior to my appt (twice) and when I checked in and again validated before it was done to my hair. I actually would rate a ZERO! This salon is such a SCAM!. I scheduled a full head foil ($165.00). I was told there might be a change once I come in and we have a consultation. The designer was nice and kept telling me she would take good care of me. She let me know she was going to do a treatment on my hair. Without giving me the cost, she just went ahead and did it. THEN, kept telling me that they are going to recommend products for me to take home. Once i was finished, the owner, Melissa, rings me up. For just the SERVICE, it was 340.00. (my hair is just above my shoulders and think so it couldn't be that much.) Then they started to ring up the products that I never stated i was going to purchase. They push you to purchase these right then and there. The are FAKE and will do anything they can to take your money. I am all for supporting local/small businesses but this place is out of control. I would NEVER ever come back. To top it off, the owner wanted to schedule a phone call with me to find out the issues I had and just never called me. Pathetic and poor excuse for an owner/company. Five stars and two thumbs up! I called and was able to get an appointment that day. Alisha did a fantastic job turning the overgrown bush I had on my head into a topnotch stylin' hairdo. I also had my eyebrows waxed and dyed. I look and feel fantastic! I have seriously just found my new stylist. Can't rave enough about Alisha and the time she took to really understand what I was looking for and discuss what would ( and wouldn't) look good on me. (Wish more stylists were like that...). After moving across the country and leaving my favorite hair stylist, I was faced with the dilemma of finding a new salon. Thankfully, I got lucky with my first try and I actually prefer Chemel to my old tried-and-true salon back home. I see Ashley and Aleshia and both are EXCELLENT! I have a very specific color I dye my hair (blue-black) and it looks impeccable each time! It is a little spendy, but I believe it is WELL WORTH IT. You seriously get what you pay for! They are so attentive to detail, listen to what you want (and are more than happy to fix it for free if you're not), friendly, and DO NOT rush at all. Plus the salon is just lush and peaceful. I love how neat and modern it is, the soft indie music, hot tea, and super sweet staff. I recommend that if money isn't a problem, buy the products they recommend (they work wonders!), get the olaplex treatments, have them tint and wax your brows, and do the express keratin treatment because it is divine! I was very impressed with Stevie, she really listened to me and did a great job with my color AND she waxed my upper lip while my hair was drip drying! I wear a short pixie. I went in for a trim and my usual stylist was not available. Given the reputation and the all the positive reviews, I went to another available stylist, Alisha. She gave me the WORST haircut of my life. Instead of a short, spunky pixie - I look like a man! She cut and thinned my hair so much you can see my scalp! Normally, I'd go back and ask for a repair job, but there's no hair left on my head to be styled. My only alternative is to wait out the next 3 weeks ..... and wear hats! It looks so bad, I don't want to be seen in public, much less go to work! Normally excellent service and styling at Che Mel .... but this is the WORST hack job ever! Be cautious.... read more

Although Alicia seemed knowledgable, I felt like she was trying to upcharge me as much as she possibly could. I checked pricing online and was expecting something in the $220-$270 range for color correction and a cut at her skill level, but I left with a quote of over $410! I was very put off by how much she talked about the salon products and the fact that she included a $45 olaplaex treatment in my quote without asking me if I would even want it. No matter how skilled, I don't want a stylist who views me as a big bag of cash. Getting your hair done is supposed to be fun and I don't want to be pressured into buying extra products the whole time I'm in a salon. read more
