Five stars for this business as it is super professional from scheduling to the staffs professionalism. I had a major hair emergency this weekend and needed it fixed right away so I could go back to work feeling confident. I called a bunch of hairstylists on Instagram but no one had any same day availability which I understood completely, but I had to keep searching. I decided to look for a formal salon on google and Chroma was the first suggestion. Living in Des Moines, Tacoma seemed a little far but I was in a crisis so I booked the slot for 1 pm with Terry Ross. I was nervous because the person who ruined my hair shattered my trust. When I walked in, I immediately noticed the establishment was modern with its open floor plan, clean and both customers and hairdressers all seemed happy, engaged in conversation while working - immediately a good vibe. Terry acknowledges me and as soon as she's finished with the previous customer she comes over to me to take a look at what she's dealing with (a color disaster to say the least) Terry really took her time to evaluate what was done to my hair by the previous person. She went over the details of what she planned on doing to correct my hair color making sure to address all my questions in the process. We had a really lovely time chatting while she worked on the foils. She checked the foils often and made sure to make me feel comfortable throughout the entire visit. The outcome was unbelievable to me because when I walked in I looked like a fox (not in a good way) and Terry sent me out the door with a high level of confidence in my appearance. Sarah L. is fantastic. She got me in (on super short notice) after I had a terrible haircut elsewhere. Sarah listened, asked questions, listened some more, and was very clear on my hopes before she ever picked up scissors. I don't speak "hair" and she went over what end results I'd see in different scenarios. The best part is that I have a really good haircut now, and Sarah let me know after I live with it, if there are any changes I should come back in. I got my hair done by Mary. First and foremost she is the sweetest and nicest person I've ever met. She kept the conversation going even when I drifted into an awkward silence . Now to hair! I came in with a box dye brown and extremely dead ends. She talked with me about all my options and made me feel comfortable in what I was going to end up with. I was extremely worried I wouldn't be able to go back to my blond color and that I would stay a horrible looking dirty brown color for my upcoming wedding. She absolutely saved me. My hair is healthy and she recommended amazing products. Her prices are unbeatable (especially for women with thick hair). My hair genuinely looks beautiful and I left with so much more confidence . This is a great place! I wanted to get in and see Gabi but she was booked out... she suggested a few other gals and I ended up getting in the next week with Ashley. This girl texted me, asked for pics of what I am looking for, was super flexible and really accommodating. These women work LONG hours and seem to really want to make their clients experience AWESOME and tailored to each individual. I was super impressed my the amount of traffic going in and out of the salon at 5-7:30 PM on a random Tuesday night. They offer drinks, candy, a really inviting atmosphere, clean, comfy, and not an overwhelming chemical small at all. I have really sensitive skin and it was only at the very end of my treatment that I started to notice my face getting hot (which was after being there for 2 hours, color on my hair, sitting under the dryer and being blow dried...) Usually I turn red immediately as color is applied. Ashley told me what I wanted (partial baliayge, low lights and trim) would take atleast 2.5 hours. I was hesitant because I am really impatient and don't want to commit to this type of hair situation on a bi-monthly basis as I hate sitting still for that long... however she was super friendly and efficient and the time flew by (plus it did not take as long as expected). I would HIGHLY recommend any of the women here... well I don't know how they do hair, but because there were atleast 6 women working and they were all BUSY... I would say they are all great! Personally, I would see Ashley, Gabi, or Kimmy... (I also know these women, and I absolutely LOVE their hair!) For the items mentioned I had done it was around $200 plus tip.... honestly a bit higher than where I usually go... BUTTTTT not by much. Also, the experience and the fact I wasn't breaking out, my hair looks presentable the SAME DAY (usually I have color stuck on my scalp for days afterwards) and I feel super refreshed makes that price TOTALLY WORTH IT! I just got my hair done yesterday by Mary and omg I love my hair! I originally went for a balayage but went with foil and shadow coloring, and it turned out way better than I expected. I liked that Mary adjusted to the color I wanted and how my hair was to figure out the best route for me. I also cut my hair and it turned out great as well. Crystal Coralles has been in charge of my hair since I was 18 (over 14 years!!). I have followed her all over Washington and currently drive from Kirkland to Tacoma to see her. She is a blonde expert! She knows exactly what to do and will be completely honest with you if you come in with a terrible idea. I have never left her chair feeling any less than spectacular! She also does great gloss/deep conditioning treatments that help with my hair's health and texture - which has changed quite a bit since my youth. Crystal also takes care of my mother's thick, coarse, brown mane and my mom now refuses to see anyone else. Side note: We always laugh and have the best conversation! Great service! I had been using box dye for a few years and recently learned how bad it was for my hair. I had a consulation with Mary and she gave me realistic expectations of how my hair would turn out if I did a partial balayage. I ended up still going for what I wanted and but we changed the color slightly. I am so happy with how it turned out. I will be coming back soon! read more

As a man, it's often difficult to find a good stylist who understands, and is comfortable working with, shorter hair. I have only been coming to Chroma salon for a short time, but Elizabeth is my girl! Also, what I like about Chroma is that every stylist is independent (i.e. they are not employees and they all service their own clients). They live and die by the clients they keep. This was my first spray tan in over 10 years and I am a fair skinned red-head so was worried about being too dark. Michelle contacted me to clarify my spray tan needs, the timing of my trip to Hawaii and activities I would be doing there. She changed my appointment to be the morning before we left for vacation and came in on her day off so my tan would be optimal for my vacation. I exfoliated before the tan and Michelle gave me instructions on how to care for it and gloves to use to buff as needed. I only needed the gloves once in my week at the ocean. I used a "hint of tan" daily moisturizer that kept the tan even and vibrant and even survived daily walks on the beach and a two hour surfing lesson in the ocean. 7 days later my tan still looks great even with the gradual fade! I had never been to a salon ever. So I was a bit nervous as to what to expect. I wanted the 'balayage' highlights technic done to my hair and I found out about this salon through Yelp so I decided to give it a try. I first called in to schedule a consultation so the stylist could see my hair and get a feel for it since I am African-American/Samoan mix, so I know my hair type is not typically common. I was set up with a stylist named Kimberly and right off the bat she was super sweet and professional. She had confidence in knowing she could get the job done with what I wanted and I appreciated that very much. The day of the appointment, I walk in and was offered a beverage by I believe the salon owner possibly, and I thought that was very nice of her. Also she would periodically check in on me and Kimberly, making sure everything was going comfortable for me and I appreciated that as well! Kimberly was AMAZING!!! She literally took the picture I had in my head out and turned it into reality for what I envisioned for my hair! I wanted the balayage highlights technic because I just love the way it looks. I am absolutely pleased with the results and also very pleasantly impressed that she was able to handle all my hair lol! And during my salon trip, we made great conversation as well, she's funny and shared some game apps with me that I am currently playing with on my phone today lol! The one star is because it was impossible to get an appointment, terrible customer service. I left 2 emails, with no replies. I called and left a voicemail, they called right back asked a few questions, said they would call back, they didn't. I called again and left a voicemail, no answer. I called in person into the salon, when someone finally noticed I was stood there, they gave me the card of a stylist, said she had space the following week and would call me. guess what, no call. So I texted the stylist, she never texted back . I guess they don't need the business that bad, good for them, took my business elsewhere. read more

I scheduled an appointment at 3:15pm for a lip wax, I arrived at 3:00pm, walked in the door, none of the girls acknowledged me or said "hello" or "welcome in". none of the girls have come up to myself or the other girls waiting to ask for our names or appointment times. I had a few of the women that worked there look at me, yet no one acknowledged me as a customer, which seemed inappropriate. Just a simple "hello, welcome in, we'll be with you soon" is what was needed to make this a better experience. The lady I had finally got to me at 3:30 so 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment. Come to find out, I was added to her schedule without that being communicated to her. Communication is important and obviously lacking in this place. I got a "balayage" done here a month or so ago and I was pretty bummed with the outcome. I told her that I didn't want the top color any darker than my natural hair color (which is an ashy light brown) and it was WAY darker than it should have been. I wanted the bottom color to be blonde but it was just an orangeish light brown and she did an ombre when I wanted a balayage. I had a Groupon for $40 or $50 off and it was still around $140 =( She was friendly and had been a hair stylist for a long time but the colors just weren't right. I love Terry at Chroma! I have been looking for a new hairdresser for 9 years to replace the one I went to for 15 years in NY. I finally found a replacement, and I may even like her better! Terry is amazing at what she does. She has given me some of my most favorite cuts and colors EVER! She talks it through with me until we are positive we are on the same page. And then she delivers! She styles my hair the way I would (so there's none of that rushing home to get my fingers in it and readjust it to my liking that I've done with other places). I had a livingsocial deal for this place - after reading all the great reviews I felt confident that I'd get a good haircut. I saw a gal named 'Sue', and while she spent a good amount of time on my hair, it's the worst haircut I've had in years. First of all, when she was washing my hair somehow she got the entire back of my shirt wet. That alone is forgivable, if that was the only issue. I wanted a basic bob, but she didn't make my hair even in the back. I also asked for my hair to be layered, but she couldn't figure out what to do with the hair closest to my head in the back (normally that should be cut shorter than the hair on the outside).... So when I got home I had to have my husband (who is not a hairdresser) fix my hair in the back. I'm going to have to have him redo my hair, which is what I was trying to avoid in the first place (having him give me a haircut), but my hair still needs a lot of fixing. read more

Leaving a review for a few things. First, Michelle does an awesome job with spray tanning. Moving here from FL I was a little bummed at how quickly my tan faded. She did an awesome job making the spray tan look natural! She makes the experience very comfortable, and is quite hilarious! Another sucky thing about moving to a different state, is leaving your normal hairstylist. I was worried about finding someone that would be able to do what I wanted. But Lindsay has done just that! After a spray tan I asked Michelle to refer me to a few people at the salon. I went with Lindsay; first she just did a trim and shape up in June before my sisters wedding. I have long, dark brown hair and haven't had it shorter than my chest since 5th grade! I made an appointment with her last week and went in yesterday. I have been contemplating about chopping it off shorter, and finally did it! I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. She did a fantastic job. First of all, this salon is so beautiful and professional looking inside. Which is instantly reassuring that you're going to have a good experience here. I'm new to the area being that I'm in the Air Force and just got stationed here in January. I'm also 9 months pregnant and had hair about to the middle of my back and finally decided I wanted it all chopped so it was one less thing I had to deal with everyday on top of having a newborn and a toddler. So I started my search on yelp and found this salon. I was put in contact with Lindsay and she was super nice and able to find an appointment time that worked for me. I get to my appointment and met Lindsay. She is absolutely adorable and so sweet! I showed her my reference pictures and told her what I specifically wanted and off we went! She's super quick but knows what she's doing. Along with my haircut I got a balayage dye and to be expected it turned out amazing! I left loving everything about my hair. I just wasn't sure if I had the right length per Air Force standards (which was on me not Lindsay). So I went to work the next day and noticed I'm just barely over the allowed length requirement. So I text Lindsay and ask if she had any time ASAP for the same day or next. And she fit me right in for the next day!! Came back into the salon and she trimmed my hair super quick and didn't even charge me for the quick fix! I will go to Lindsay as long as I can while I'm still in Washington!
