Wow I'm so glad I had lunch here today. The restaurant we planned was closed today, so my Mexican friend suggested we go to her favorite weekend place. Parking isn't good and the neighborhood is somewhat sketchy. I wasn't happy to park more than a block away, but all was ok. The place is lively and bright with 8 or 9 tables. Two of us had fabulous carnitas flautas; one had barbacoa quesadillas. Everything was delicious! The star was the guacamole.. Fresh and so well prepared & the chips were perfection. The wait staff were friendly, but I have no idea of their English abilities since I was with Spanish speakers. The menu was bilingual. I'll definitely come back!

The food is always great! Service is also very good on the phone and in person! The sopes are our favorite appetizer but can fill you up as an entree too. Video review: YouTube: On The Rodas

Chencha Y Chole is a very nice Mexican house at the corner of Broad and Cass in Trenton. It has been open for several months and still has the "Grand Opening" signs hanging on the sides of the newly painted triangular building. The odd angle of this intersection created an opportunity for the original architect and city planner to design a structure that fits snuggly in this narrow corner, thus adding interesting perspective to the establishment. Inside is clean and bright and feels like a bit of sunny Mexico right here in River City. The menu is diverse, and the plates leaving the open kitchen are equally colorful, and more importantly, very tasty. I asked for my Hawaiian Torta with Grilled Chicken rather than jamon, and was easily accommodated. The sandwich arrived loaded with bird, avocado, onion, lettuce, queso fresca ,fried pineapple, spicy mayo, and a few other unidentifiables that added to the overall finished product. The toasted Roll made the entire package very enjoyable. It came with good Fries. Most surprisingly delicious was the homemade Tamarindo drink. While I thought I was ordering a carbonated bottled of soda, in fact, I was getting something much better. The Tamarind was cool, mildly sweet and tart, and so very refreshing. It arrived in a large glass and was a mid-brown shade from the tree pods it was reduced from. Also, very high in antioxidants. It is great to be so pleasantly overwhelmed. Serendipity. This is one of the best Mexican joints I have tried in the city. 4 Stars with a Bullet!

The food was very Authentic - delicious homemade Mole de Pollo. We also ordered their weekend special, the lamb stew accompanied by two lamb tacos - absolutely delicate in taste and rich in Mexican flavor! We unexpectedly stumbled upon this place coming from the exit in Trenton - the chef/owner Miguel takes pride in his cooking, and we got to sample his special recipes from his hometown. The staff were very friendly, served quickly and the table was complete with everything a 5 star restaurant in Manhattan would have! I hope this place keeps up with their cleanliness, excellent food and absurdly low prices.. When you need a place to stop by for a meal in between NY and DC, Chencha is the place! It's a hidden gem, and we found it first :)

Loved it! I bookmarked a few places to go on a "Trenton taco tour" and started here. The location is not in the greatest area, but I felt safe and there was plenty of parking. The first thing we noticed when coming here is that it's very clean. Great menu choices. The menu is in English, but much of the staff is Spanish speaking only. We ordered fresh juices, a variety of tacos and some chicken sopes. I really liked the somewhat spicy and limey guac here. Nice presentation and hearty portion sizes. My boyfriend and I were in heaven after eating here, talking about it for a couple days after.

I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

We came here for brunch on a Saturday which happened to be Valentine's Day as well. The entire place was decorated with heart balloons, flowers on the wall, and the sweetest music playing. Even their regular decor is spectacular; the tables are spotless, beautiful velvet green chairs, and the cleanest bathroom. I also LOVE that their menu is a tour of South America because you can get such a variety of different flavors. We started with an order of their beef empanadas which were spectacular ! Then I ordered a Costa Rican Gallo Pinto breakfast (black beans, rice, chorizo, avocado, sweet pla trains and egg). Hubby ordered a exican breakfast of huevos rancheros (cubed potatoes, sausage, onions, peppers, chorizo, eggs and red sauce). Our son ordered the Nutella, strawberry pancakes which he also LOVED. Everything was very reasonably priced between $13-17 and was a good portion. The coffee was also amazing, sadly $5 which was a little pricey with no refills...but I'm happy to support a small business versus a chain. Kevin who was our server was so sweet and kept checking in to make sure we were liking our food. Then at the end of our meal they gave us the most delicious flan because it was Valentine's Day! It is amazing how Mexican rugs thrown over tables change the look and mood of one of the classic Italian houses. One can only hope they can do something that is the Mexican equivalent of the great Chicken Cacciatore that its predecessor was known for. The space is casual, but also clean and well organized. The bar is no longer servicing alcohol, but in its place are fresh squeezed fruit/vegetable juices. My large snifter of Carrot Juice was sweet and coolly refreshing. The menu is diverse and provides just enough English to hint at what you will get. My Torta Carnitas (slow cooked pork) was huge and enough for 2 meals. The Roll was thin and nicely crunchy. There was plenty of meat at the bottom and it was the base for the Lettuce, Avocado, Onion, Jalapeno, Fresh Cheese, Tomato and Spicy Mayo that all came wrapped neatly in paper. I needed knife and fork to work my way through the half torta, taking the other piece home for another lunch. The combination of fresh veggie juice ($4) and the torta ($8), may seem steep for this type of shop, but when you realize they are preparing two meals for you, the value proposition becomes outstanding. El Portrillo asks if "You have tried the best Mexican food around?" They are certainly entitled to their hyperbole, because it is among the best I have sampled in Trenton.
