5/5. Ordered through Doordash. I highly recommend this place. Huge serving for $17. Very flavorful, well marinated barbecue so delicious!

Plato tipico con carne encebollada! Yum!

My current obsession is Guatelinda! I had this place bookmarked forever and finally decided to pop in for dinner with the hubby, and pretty much think about going every day after. They are located in a neighborhood street in Trenton with plenty of parking and plenty of seating. I love that there are giant pictures of many of the dishes on the menu, as I am not well versed in Guatemalan and Costa Rican dishes....yet! Everything on the menu is EXTREMELY affordable, and is served in very generous portions. My absolute favorite plate is El Plato tipico con carne encebollada (The Traditional Plate with beef and onions); the plate reminds me of the Colombian version of a Bandeja Paisa. It brings a n AMAZING rice with black beans, big piece of thinly sliced steak, 2 fried eggs, avocado, sweet plantains and tortillas, all for $10! The seasoning on everything is excellent, and I always have enough to go home for lunch the next day. I have also ordered the chicken flautas which were crispy and covered in fresh salad and delicious sauces. I made it my meal, but it would be a great plate to share as an appetizer, and the portion of the flautas were much larger than in most places, very filling. Hubby ordered platter with the fish and shrimp, which at first seemed kind of small, but it was very filling. It came with white rice, black beans, tortilla and salad - a healthier version for those watching their waistline. lol So all these amazing things to say and NOT 5 STARS!?!? Well for starters they are CASH ONLY, which my boujie self hates. Also the service is super slow at times, like they take your order quickly and the food arrives quickly....but then they forget about you. So if you need a refill, want dessert, or need the check you will most likely have to get up and find your waitress. Regardless, I highly recommend their food and will absolutely be coming back.

    Guatemalan mixed tacos, yum

A Yelp search while nearby brought me here. There were actually several good search results some of which I've already been. To say this general area is dense with quality Hispanic choices would be an understatement. And I was very happy with this selection. I walked into the first of 2 dining rooms. This is where the open kitchen is too. With the temp outside closing in on 100, there was no relief in this room. If eating there I would definitely opt for the second room, although I can't say how much better it would have been. There were patrons happily dining in both though. Not wanting to endure the heat I quickly decided on tacos. There are 2 styles you can choose from, with several options for protein. There are the usual type that can be found in many similar spots, double tortilla'd and sporting some nice garnishes. The other type is a Guatemalan style, these are served with homemade thick tortillas and instead of garnish, the meat is tossed with some onions and cilantro. I selected these and to try several fillings I ordered the mixed platter. Great choice as I was able to taste the pork, beef and chicken. I think the pork might have been best, super tender and great seasoning. But it needs to be said, this serving was huge. In the future I will have extra tortillas on hand to finish up the remains. There is a slight language barrier that the staff seems eager to overcome. But everyone who waited on me was very friendly. The interior is not fancy, but not as casual as some of these tend to be. Cleanliness was apparent in the room I was in. I'm coming back soon for another tasty high protein meal. Mucho Bueno

Trenton has become a haven for excellent Latin American cuisine. Guatelinda on Clinton Avenue is one such locale where you can find totally authentic dishes that help you forget for a few moments that you are in the heart of Jersey, and feel that you are on the avenidas de Antigua Guatemala while you dine on delicious plates of nearly homemade fare. When I walked in around 2 in the afternoon last week, I was not only the only Gringo in the house; I was the only customer. I asked the guys behind the counter if lunch was still being served. They spoke not a word of Ingles, so I tried again in my mostly forgotten Espanol. I was good enough to be understood, and after a few smiles and nods I picked a table and sat facing the front window with a view of the house around me. The large menu offered Spanish and English descriptions, and even a few photos of the offerings. The server was very friendly (and cute) and worked with me in her broken English to put together my lunch. The platter of Tacos Guatemaltecos arrived loaded with three double tortilla soft folded wheat 'tillas full of well spiced grilled pork, onion, pepper, cilantro, and a few things I could not identify. On top of the tacos were a half avocado, sliced radish, and a hot ghost pepper. I doctored each with the accompaniments and went to work. The combination was wonderful, with each part of the combo playing olfactory harmonics. Hot, soft, crunchy, chewy, textured, smooth and cool - all in each bite. It was great and fun to eat. The JarritosTamarindo soda helped tamp down the overly hot spots. Mexican pop is so much more flavorful than its northern counterparts. It worked so well with its Guatemalan cousins. There is a lot more on the menu I want to taste. I will go back to this, as well as the two or three other very good shops in the area, to satisfy my lust for Central American food. Don't let the streetscape outside deter you. Guatelinda is the real deal.

    Unbelievably delicious! Tacos mixto

My boyfriend and I were super hungry and we craved some tacos. We ventured into Trenton for our lunch and we were glad we did! We found street parking easily and when we entered the restaurant, we were greeting warmly with a smile. Instantly, the atmosphere seemed very comforting and welcoming. We perused the menu and decided on two orders of the tacos al pastor and one order of the tacos mixto to go. While we waited, we sat down at a table near the front and watched other satisfied looking customers eat and engage in happy conversation. It was a great sight to see. The delicious smell of our food being made got us excited and even hungrier for our meal. In about 10-15 minutes, our large order was packaged and ready to go. The price was very fair for the amount of food we received. There was an ample amount of salsa included with the meal and napkins were provided in the bag as well. When we got home to taste the food, we were blown away. The meats were flavorful and succulent and the salsa they provided were so delicious. My favorite was the spicy green one. Needless to say, we couldn't even finish half of what we ordered, but we are excited to have the leftovers for dinner! Will definitely go back and we recommend this restaurant to everyone!

I went to this place for dinner based in the 4 star recommendation. I ordered the steak and chicken tacos, horchata, and sweet plantains. The food was tasty. The only thing I did not like is that this is a "cash only" place. I had to get cash at the bar next door and use their ATM. Parking is street parking so a little difficult.

    Guatemalan restaurant in Chambersburg

Once upon a time they tell me that the Chambersburg hood in Trenton was Little Italy. Well these days it's Little Guatemala. Finding myself in Trenton recently, I stopped in the popular Guatelinda for a meal. And I was glad I did. First of all the greeting was very warm. There are two dining rooms to choose from but I like the décor and Guatemalan artifacts on display best in the outer dining area. Churrasco platters are the specialty here and I ordered the Churrasco Guatelinda. This is a very filling meal consisting of a pork chop, steak, shrimp, avocado, salad, potato, sweet plantanos, refried beans, and three Guatemalan tortillas. (Yes all that was on one plate and I prob left a couple things out). Chips and salsa verde und roja began the meal. My only disappointment was that they do not serve any of Guatemala's famous chuchitos to try out. The take-out business in Guatelinda is very thriving as literally dozens of people stopped by while I was there to pick up meals as well as there was a delivery service in operation. It's easy to park on the street so when you want to eat some Guatemalan food, what are you waiting for?

I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

I also LOVE that their menu is a tour of South America because you can get such a variety of different flavors. We started with an order of their beef empanadas which were spectacular ! Then I ordered a Costa Rican Gallo Pinto breakfast (black beans, rice, chorizo, avocado, sweet pla trains and egg). Hubby ordered a exican breakfast of huevos rancheros (cubed potatoes, sausage, onions, peppers, chorizo, eggs and red sauce). Our son ordered the Nutella, strawberry pancakes which he also LOVED. Everything was very reasonably priced between $13-17 and was a good portion. The coffee was also amazing, sadly $5 which was a little pricey with no refills...but I'm happy to support a small business versus a chain. It is amazing how Mexican rugs thrown over tables change the look and mood of one of the classic Italian houses. The bar is no longer servicing alcohol, but in its place are fresh squeezed fruit/vegetable juices. My large snifter of Carrot Juice was sweet and coolly refreshing. The menu is diverse and provides just enough English to hint at what you will get. My Torta Carnitas (slow cooked pork) was huge and enough for 2 meals. The Roll was thin and nicely crunchy. There was plenty of meat at the bottom and it was the base for the Lettuce, Avocado, Onion, Jalapeno, Fresh Cheese, Tomato and Spicy Mayo that all came wrapped neatly in paper. I needed knife and fork to work my way through the half torta, taking the other piece home for another lunch. The combination of fresh veggie juice ($4) and the torta ($8), may seem steep for this type of shop, but when you realize they are preparing two meals for you, the value proposition becomes outstanding. El Portrillo asks if "You have tried the best Mexican food around?" They are certainly entitled to their hyperbole, because it is among the best I have sampled in Trenton.
