I took my mother here for a Mother's Day massage. She got the combo package (30-minute body massage…read more+ 30-minute foot massage) for $90, which we paid for upfront. Before the session, they gave us a form where we could choose the pressure level, mark areas to focus on, and note any areas to avoid, which I appreciated because it made the experience feel more personalized. When we entered the massage room, the therapist did not want me to stay in the room with my mother, even though there were clearly two seats available inside. At first, they said, "Someone is sitting there," which made no sense because it was only me and my mom in the room. I asked who would be sitting there, and they went quiet before repeating that I couldn't stay. I explained that my mother does not speak English and that I needed to remain there to help translate if necessary. Instead of showing understanding, the situation became awkward and uncomfortable right from the beginning. As a customer, especially when bringing a parent who cannot communicate easily, I expected a little more patience and professionalism. Despite that interaction, my mother did enjoy the massage overall. It was her first professional massage, so she did not have many expectations going in. The therapist did pay attention to the areas she marked on the form and seemed attentive to the pressure and focus points she requested. My mother said she felt relaxed afterward, and I was happy that she at least enjoyed that part of the experience. Unfortunately, the ending completely ruined it for me. After the massage ended, as we were walking out the door, the therapist stood in front of the door and blocked me from exiting to ask for a tip. I understand tipping culture and I normally do tip for good service, but making customers feel pressured or physically stopped before they can leave is extremely uncomfortable and unprofessional. It left a very bad final impression on me, especially after the earlier issue about me staying in the room to help my mother communicate. Overall, while the massage itself was decent and my mother enjoyed it, the customer service and handling of the situation made the experience feel uncomfortable and stressful rather than relaxing. For a place that provides services meant to help people unwind, I think they should work on making customers feel respected and at ease from start to finish. We will not be returning. I would only come here if I spoke Chinese, came alone, and don't mind tipping bad service. ‍

Previously I had used what amounted to "New Age" acupuncturist; that is to say Westerners who latched on to the ideals of Eastern philosophy and medicine. Although I'm all for opening our minds and blending cultures, the fact remains that Chinese medicine is intricately tied to Chinese culture. Therefore, if you want to guarantee the doctor understands the process completely, I recommend finding someone who grew up with that culture. Dr. Grant has a small practice, but that adds to the relaxation. He understands what it is you need, doesn't hide behind semantics over what a symptom or disorder might be called, and knows exactly where to treat. Since I've attended him my daily headaches have become less frequent and much less intense, and my stress levels are always at their lowest after a treatment. I walk out of there feeling like I've just released tension through hard exercise even though I've been lying on a bed for 45 minutes listening to music. If you're looking for an acupuncturist within the Columbia/Ellicott City area, then I recommend calling up Dr. Zhang. His prices are about average, but his skill is worth it; even better if your insurance covers it!

I also didnt have time to bring my own blanket one day (she doesn't provide them or sheets either) and she was nasty about it. It's $200 for first appointment. Can she not go to target or somewhere and pick up a few basic blankets like other acupuncturists do? I normally don't even need one, and didn't that day, she did not have to be so rude. Prima donna.

The infection was finally cleared but it left me with a type of pseudo-colitis and I was still having abdominal pain, and other unpleasant symptoms. All the doctors told me was to eat yogurt and take pro biotics which I was doing, but it didn't help much. I did a lot of research about restoring gut health but most of it did not give specifics. I felt like I needed someone who knew what they were doing to help guide me through it, tell me exactly what to eat, take and when in order to help me restore my destroyed gut microbiome. I decided to think outside the box and seek out a Traditional Chinese Medicine specialist. Kathryn put me on a specific diet plan which included supplements plus acupuncture for the abdominal pain. After just two treatments, once a week apart, I could tell a difference. I finally turned the corner and by week 4 the pain was gone, my gut was healing and things were finally getting back to normal again. Kathryn not only helped facilitate the healing process but helped me get my life back. I can now go places and plan trips without the fear of being sick away from home and always having to be near a bathroom. Her knowledge about gut health and the steps to take to restore it were invaluable. I am truly thankful for her help.
